About The GuestDavid V. Hicks retired in 2015 as Chief Academic Officer for Meritas LLC, a company based in Chicago that owned and operated K-12 college preparatory schools worldwide.  The day after his retirement, Meritas was sold to Nord Anglia Education.   Before joining Meritas, Hicks spent thirty years in independent education, heading St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Jackson, Mississippi; St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas; St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire; and the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia.  After graduating from The Stony Brook School (New York) in 1966, Hicks studied at Princeton where he majored in English and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1970. He then read for a master's degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Jesus College, Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. He later studied at the University of Moscow. Hicks served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and is the youngest man ever to teach on the faculty of the Naval War College. In 1976, he ran for Congress in New York's Westchester County in a race he narrowly lost to long-time incumbent Richard Ottinger. In 1981 his book, NORMS & NOBILITY: A TREATISE ON EDUCATION, won the Outstanding Book Award for Education from the American Library Association. In 1996, Hicks created a stir in boarding school communities around the United States when he published his essay, “The Strange Fate of the American Boarding School,” in The American Scholar. David Paul fell in love with Muslims as a college student visiting Turkey (now Türkiye) to share the gospel. After getting married, he and his wife thought they'd go where Muslims are — the Middle East. God changed their plans, reminding them that millions of Muslims live in South Asia, yet very few mission workers go there. They knew God was calling them, and without ever visiting, they moved to South Asia more than a decade ago. Their focus is on reaching Urdu speaking Muslims with the gospel message. Listen as David shares difficulties from those early years of ministry and how we can encourage and pray for missionaries to push forward through their early challenges to reach maximum fruitfulness. Today David's challenges are different; one is the great need to develop more Muslim background believers (MBBs) to be leaders in the Urdu church. Listen to David tell stories of Urdu speaking Muslims who have come to faith in Christ and how different understandings of Islam can affect how much Christian persecution believers face for leaving Islam. David Binder joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Second Trombone in September 2015. He previously served as Co-Principal Trombone of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Finland for three seasons and currently performs with the Grand Teton Music Festival during summers. He has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, Music of the Baroque (Chicago), the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Tapiola (Finland) Sinfonietta. As a soloist, David has performed recitals in Finland, Switzerland, and across the US; and has won solo competitions at the American Trombone Workshop, International Trombone Festival, and International Women’s Brass Conference.David received a 2018 Kresge Artist Fellowship, awarded by Kresge Arts in Detroit, a program of The Kresge Foundation. The Fellowship is awarded in recognition of a demonstrated track record of artistic achievement and high quality work, and the potential to reflect, enhance, or impact communities within metropolitan Detroit. During the Fellowship year, David performed recitals of contemporary works for solo trombone and chamber ensemble.A Chicago native, he completed his Bachelor’s degree with Brass Department Honors at Northwestern University, studying with Michael Mulcahy, Peter Ellefson, Timothy Higgins, and Randall Hawes. While at Northwestern, he was also a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and studied additionally with Jay Friedman. During his time in Europe, David travelled extensively to study with prominent trombonists on the continent, including Ian Bousfield and Jamie Williams.David has quickly become sought after as a teacher, presenting masterclasses at Northwestern University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Indiana University. David Nihill like many people, was terrified of public speaking. But unlike most people, to conquer his fear of speaking in front of groups, David spent a year studying and performing stand-up. After performing at The Improv, The Comedy Store, & Cobb's he realized that anyone can be funny when giving a talk. Yes, that means even you, or someone that thinks they aren't funny. He also learned that even people who hated public speaking like himself, could also become a great public speaker while being funny. David has created a 7 step framework to help normal people become better and funnier public speakers. David and Goliath feels to us like the rise of the underdog stories we all know and love. David, fits the mold for a Coloring book all-star. David was a 10-12 year old boy who, in a tournament of champions, faced Goliath the giant who held the philistine heavy weight belt, and killed him. When we read this story we often tend to think of David as the most epic tween ever. The interpretation of the story focusing on David is lacking, it was not David who killed Goliath, but God used David to destroy an insurmountable opponent.
