When you think of the entertainment industry, you might picture the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, red carpets, and award shows. But behind every breakout star and successful production, there are industry professionals like Zachary Spiegel working tirelessly to bring talent to the forefront. Zach is a casting director whose journey from actor to casting professional has been filled with passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. Recently, Zach joined Beverly Williams for an in-depth conversation about his career, the art of casting, and what it truly takes to succeed in the entertainment business. Zach's love for entertainment started in an unexpected place: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His journey took him from New York to Los Angeles, with a stop in Italy, where he studied Commedia dell'arte as a college junior. Zach pursued his acting career, spending seven years in New York honing his craft. While most actors dread auditions, Zach found himself enjoying the process. He realized that his true passion lay not in performing but in being on the other side of the table, helping to discover and cultivate talent. That's when he made the shift from acting to casting. Zach feels it's the best of both worlds; he is deeply involved in the creative process but in a way that feels more fulfilling. Zach considers casting an art form that requires empathy, business acumen, and a keen eye for talent. He views his work as a bridge between producers and actors, ensuring that the right talent gets the right opportunities. His work goes beyond just filling roles. It's about creating opportunities for members of historically excluded and marginalized communities. Zach is passionate about making sure every actor has equal access to auditions, advocating for inclusive and accessible casting calls. He explained one of the ways he does that is by using intentional language in casting notices. The way a role is described can either invite or discourage certain actors from applying. By being intentional with wording, Zach ensures that actors of all backgrounds feel welcome to audition. Many people dream of breaking into entertainment, lured by fame and fortune. But as Zach and Beverly discussed, success in the industry isn't about talent alone—it's about perseverance and hard work. “The most talented people don't always reap the benefits,” Zach shared. “Because the most talented people don't always have the ambition or desire to do it.” Ambition, networking, and resilience are just as important as raw skill. And networking isn't just about meeting people, it's about staying in touch and building relationships and ways to create mutual value. Beverly added her own perspective on this, emphasizing the power of genuine connections. Whether through a simple email, a thoughtful card, or a quick message, nurturing relationships can open doors in ways you never expect. Zach's career, much like the entertainment industry itself, is ever-evolving. Casting professionals often find themselves between projects, but rather than waiting for opportunities to come to him, Zach takes an active approach. He reads scripts and tracks up-and-coming actors as well as staying engaged with industry trends. As the conversation wrapped up, Beverly asked Zach what advice he would give to those looking to break into entertainment. His response? “Don't leave, don't die.” It's a humorous yet profound take on the industry—one that speaks to the resilience required to stay in the game. For anyone considering a career in entertainment, Zach's story is a testament to the power of adaptability, persistence, and passion. The path may not always be straightforward, but for those willing to put in the work, the rewards can be life changing. Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated. This episode of Your Employment Matters tackles two important topics in employment: finding the right job and building the right team, and how one's role and co-workers have a significant impact on work experience. Today's guest, Betty Thorne Tierney, is Vice President and the Associate General Counsel for a large retail chain in the Southern US. She spent the last 31 years in retail, actively litigating all types of cases nationwide as first chair. Since 2012, she's led an in-house trial team of attorneys, paralegals, and admins. “It's not always easy to recognize an opportunity if it's something that you didn't envision for yourself.” - Beverly Williams Betty never envisioned herself in management, leading an in-house litigation team. But when the opportunity came, she took the time to decide, had conversations with her spouse, her boss, and took a chance. This turned out to be the best decision for her career. In this role, she learned how to manage different roles, different personalities, and work in different settings to do the best work—as a team—for the company. Key topics discussed in this episode include: Recognizing and assessing opportunities Characteristics considered in the hiring process Representing yourself and your company well “When looking for a new job, make sure you research, know what's expected, and see it meets your goals and abilities. That is the best thing you can do for yourself.” - Betty Thorne Tierney Beverly and Betty also talked about the right fit between the employee, the job, the company, and the team. Before anyone takes on a role, they need to make sure that the values, nature of work, and all other job details align with their goals. This isn't just for the benefit of the company, but also for the employee. It helps make sure that when they start working, they won't feel burdened, misunderstood, or even underperform. It's the job of the leader to develop the team. However, it's the employee's responsibility to develop skills and character and provide value to the company. In this episode of Your Employment Matters, we continue the series on labor management. This topic is much needed after the years of decline in union membership, the changes in the workplace after the pandemic, and the great resignation. There is now a cautious optimism about a resurgence of unionism. Our guest today is Stuart Davidson, Esq. He's currently a partner at Willig, Williams & Davidson where he represents public and private benefit funds, fighting to preserve the ability of workers to retire with dignity and have access to affordable health care. His work for unions includes leading contract negotiations, presenting interest and grievance arbitrations and advising on external and internal union matters. “It takes a monumental effort to successfully organize workers.” - Stuart Davidson While Stuart was in college, he was challenged by his great uncle to get to know and work with the working-class people of America, so he worked as a Union Organizer in North Carolina in the 1970s. Besides the social and economic aspects inhibiting union organization, he saw that lawyers dominated the field and denied workers the opportunity to build a better future. From there, he decided to attend law school and become a union lawyer. He's been representing unions and workers for 42 years. Key topics discussed: The duality of sides of workers and management The effects of the change from a defined benefit plan (earned pension) to a defined contribution plan (401k's) The rise in Union memberships, especially among the young workers The changes in the workplace over the decades, especially in the relationship between workers and management “I believe that labor is a failed process.” - Stuart Davidson The workplace and labor laws need to change so that employees will get paid fairly, get the benefits they deserve, and have a healthy working environment. This conversation between Beverly and Stuart has conflicting perspectives, new insights, and much-needed knowledge for anyone who wants to know the benefits of being a part of a union. Right now, the workplace has five different generations of employees, and such a diverse environment comes its set of benefits and challenges. This can be a tricky situation to navigate. If managed right, it can foster a group that's working cohesively together and a business that's constantly innovating and growing. When not handled well, it can lead to underappreciated employees, unqualified managers, and tense disagreements. To talk about how he handles these situations in his business, we're joined by Terry M. Isner. Terry is an experienced marketer and creative communicator with nearly three decades of expertise. He shares insights from his journey as the owner and CEO of Jaffee, a virtual agency specializing in legal PR and marketing. His focus on human dynamics and empathy in business has led to transformative leadership styles and improved productivity within his agency. Some topics Terry discusses include: Balancing compromise and collaboration - Different generations of employees have different perspectives and goals. Recognizing Individual strengths and passions - When employees and managers treat each other as an individual, they can better recognize the strengths and dreams of each other. Embracing change and innovation - The workplace is constantly changing and employers need to adapt as well. This includes adapting the business in different areas like work structure, compensations, leadership styles, and even technology. “All we can do is try and be open. And that's exactly how this is going to work.” - Terry M. Isner This insightful conversation between Terry and Beverly gives practical advice and new perspectives on how businesses can navigate the complexities of the constantly evolving workplace and foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and innovation. In this episode of Your Employment Matters, Beverly Williams welcomes a very special guest, Mr. Richard Hooker Jr., a union leader, and officer. Together, they discuss the importance of collaborative negotiation in employment disputes, particularly in today's post-COVID world. As the Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 623, Richard is responsible for its 4,500 members. He makes sure that they receive protection, fair pay and good work conditions. His goals are to change the mindset of management and employees and to bring dignity and respect back in the workplace. “We just went through one of the most difficult times of our history, and America had to depend on its workers to make it through.” - Richard Hooker Jr. Some of the issues in today's workplace discussed are: Union leaderships The Great Resignation led to people losing jobs without a backup Contentious strikes and dragged-out negotiations During the pandemic, the world realized how vital laborers are to keeping society running, and how they deserve fair contracts and compensation. When employees don't have a highly specialized or in-demand skill, they aren't in a position to make demands or have job security, because they can be easily replaced. This is why Richard is advocating for Unions, so workers can have the protection they need. The employer-employee relationship is still a relationship. Both sides have their expectations, needs, and non-negotiables. There has to be a balance, a way to reach win-win situations without great losses. This episode explores why this balance is necessary, yet tricky to reach. The court has been the place to settle all manners of disputes in family matters, estate dealings, and even employment issues. But taking things to court is expensive, time-consuming, and emotionally exhausting. In this episode, Beverly Williams is joined by esteemed attorney Marcia Werner to introduce us to the world of collaborative law and how it can be a better way to handle legal disagreements, even in labor management relations. Marcia is an accomplished attorney with over 45 years of experience in family law, employment law, and other legal specializations. Her passion for helping others and her dedication to promoting constructive dialogue gives a different take in the legal world. With her wealth of knowledge and commitment to promoting a better way to resolve legal disputes, she brings a new perspective to the table. “If your mind is telling you that you've been wronged, then you may fight to the end to try to vindicate your position.”-Marcia Werner Marcia introduces us to collaborative law, an alternative dispute resolution for legal matters where each party hires a lawyer along with other professionals, such as financial experts or mental health professionals to negotiate an agreement without ever going to court. This is more commonly practiced in estate disputes, divorce, and family law, but today we'll explore how this can be used in employment issues. With the rising number of calls for unionization, strikes, and changes in the employment world, perhaps now is the time to bring in collaborative law. Marcia also talks about: The origins of collaborative law The importance of transparency Interdisciplinary collaboration This episode provides fresh optimism and the knowledge that there are avenues for conflict resolution other than court. There are those professionals who, when you look at their portfolio, make you want to stop and ask, “How did they do it?” These are the ones who have worked for multiple high-performing companies, across multiple industries, and yet in each position they held, they delivered excellent results and contributed to the organization. One of these individuals is our guest for today, Paul Teasdale. For over 20 years, Paul has helped businesses to drive performance, most recently with the McLaren racing team. Through coaching and facilitation support, he helps clients take the approaches and ways of working that deliver elite-level Motorsport performance, and apply them to their own world through facilitation, speaking, and consulting. Paul has studied engineering, yet he describes himself as the world's worst technical engineer. Instead, his interest lies in the practical application of the methodologies of engineering, looking at a certain system or process, and figuring out how else it can be improved. “We all have transferrable skills. A lot of people just don't realize it enough.” - Paul Teasdale Throughout Paul's professional years, he has learned lots of lessons. Here are three that he shared in this episode: We all have transferrable skills, and these are what will bring us through all the professional changes we will go through. Put in the effort to improve yourself and your professional performance. Learn to identify the data and elements you need that will allow you to make the best decisions. “How can you adapt what has been learned and then adapt it for your own performance?” - Paul Teasdale Paul says that any job position should be beneficial for both employee and employer. The values and goals should be aligned. You should bring value to the organization you're a part of, and you should get the support that you need for you to perform your best. In this episode, we're still discussing employment, but more than that, we're talking about gratitude, life's purpose, and love. There are some people who just seem to radiate love and light, and that's the perfect way to describe our guest for today. Kim Sorrelle is a writer, speaker, entrepreneur, activist, and author. Her entrepreneurial journey included commercial real estate, a golf course, event facilities, catering, a grocery store, and more. Besides building businesses into multi-million-dollar companies, Kim is proud to have weathered the pandemic storm in the food industry, pivoting, keeping staff employed, and seeing the company's sales grow beyond pre-pandemic numbers. Kim is also the director of Rays of Hope International, a partnering organization working with people who have a passion, a vision, and a mission to help people in their own country and just need someone to walk alongside. “Whatever you're passionate about and gifted in, put it to use to help people.” - Kim Sorrelle Here are three life lessons we can take away from Kim's experiences: Develop discipline and good habits now. They're necessary for your success. Always practice gratitude and choose love. Let what you're passionate about be your gift to the world. Kim has had a lot of success in her life, but she's also experienced great loss and went on her own journey to discover love. It's amazing how someone who's had as much success as she's had, and experienced as much as she has, can still be so humble and inviting. Kim truly loves people, and she now shares what she's learned about the true meaning of love as much as she can. “Part of it is having the right mindset, that you are capable and you are worthy.” - Kim Sorrelle So let Kim inspire and encourage you today. Listen to her story, I guarantee that you'll leave with lessons that you can apply to your life right away. Yesterday the TikTok CEO was grilled by U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill. TikTok is a Chinese company, and China has laws that state that every tech company must give unfettered back-door access to their entire systems to the Chinese security state. As in, everything TikTok knows, the Chinese secret police and military know. They don't need to ask; they don't need to go to court to get a search warrant. It's China. It's a dictatorship. They just take it. It's not a secret. You might say — so what does TikTok know about its users that is so damaging to U.S. and Canadian national security? I mean, half of TikTok is silly video trends. But that's the bait — the fun video sing-alongs. The fun video filters, like the one that — I don't know how they do it — make you look like you're 20 years young. ONLINE PRIVACY But the worrying part is that the app is on your phone, and it has access to everything. You give it access to everything on your phone. Your friends list. Your photos and videos. Your GPS location. It asks you for permission, you click yes, and it has the information. Over 100 million Americans have opted-in. Here's a link to their privacy policy. Who do we share your information with? We share your data with third-party service providers who help us to deliver the Platform, such as cloud storage providers. We also share your information with business partners, other companies in the same group as TikTok, content moderation services, measurement providers, advertisers, and analytics providers. Where and when required by law, we will share your information with law enforcement agencies or regulators, and with third parties pursuant to a legally binding court order. That's a gentle way of saying they share it with anyone they want — including the Chinese government. Look at this paragraph: _User Content and Behavioural Information. We process the content you generate and view on the Platform, including preferences you set (such as choice of language) photographs, audios and videos you upload or create, comments and livestreams you make (“User Content”). We collect User Content through pre-loading at the time of creation, import, or upload, regardless of whether you choose to save or upload that User Content, in order to recommend audio options and provide other personalized recommendations. We may collect information about the images and audio that are a part of your User Content, such as identifying the objects and scenery that appear, the existence and location within an image of face and body features and attributes, the nature of the audio, and the text of the words spoken in your User Content._ We may access content, including text, images, and video, found in your device's clipboard, with your permission. It goes on. You give them everything, forever, for free, for them to do whatever they like. HAN DONG I mean, it's bad, sure. But is it as bad as having an accused Chinese agent sitting in your Parliament, as part of the government? Dong's been accused of working with the Chinese dictatorship, advising them to keep the two Michaels in prison longer. The Trudeau government determined that there was no “actionable evidence” after it received a CSIS transcript of an early 2021 conversation between Liberal MP Han Dong and China's top diplomat in Toronto, according to a senior government source – saying conclusions could not be drawn that Mr. Dong asked Beijing to keep two Canadians in prison for political reasons. What was he doing reporting to Beijing? He's not a foreign minister. TIKTOK AND HUAWEI TikTok is awful. And don't think Facebook and YouTube are any better — we know from what Twitter has disclosed under Elon Musk that they were the same. Twitter was basically in the service of the CIA and FBI. So of course TikTok is in the service of China's PLA. I don't mind the idea of banning TikTok — it's malware, it's spyware, it feels like a toy, a game, a hobby, whatever, an entertainment, but it's an espionage tool — just like DJI drones. Almost all the drones sold in America are Chinese made — and all of their data goes through their servers back in China. I would say that every square inch of America is mapped in high def by Americans using drones. And that's all in China's hands now. And 100 million humans, and all of their social connections. They have all the info, all of it. In 2021, Trudeau partnered with Huawei to sponsor leading-edge computer and electrical engineering research at Canadian universities, "a move critics say threatens this country's national security and economic interests." So yeah. On your app. Or on your Huawei phone. Or in your telecom hardware. Or your MPs. Or your prime minister. Or your former governor-general. Or your former PM, who went to work for China less than two months after retiring as PM. JOE BIDEN Now Joe Biden may even be worse. He may even be on the payroll, indirectly. His son Hunter takes millions — some reporting suggests much, much more — from China. For no apparent work or skills. Who just happened to fly to China with Biden on Air Force One ten years ago when Biden was VP. So you have two of the most compromised leaders in the world, when it comes to China. And two of the most corrupt leaders in the world. And two of the frankly stupidest leaders in the world. At least Biden has an excuse — he's lived a long life and he's in his twilight years, he's 80, and he's losing some of his sharpness. It's a huge problem. But our government was corrupted the old-fashioned way — money and power. Before I stop talking about TikTok, let me tell you that I downloaded the app, then deleted it because I was worried about security. But then I downloaded it again because how can you say no? Whenever conservatives are in power — Donald Trump, or Stephen Harper — the media party and the left tells us they're warmongers, they're cowboys, they don't know how diplomacy is done. It's a lie — Harper had stronger relations with every country after his term than the beginning — except Russia. Trump Brough peace to the Middle East, and the Korean Peninsula, and Russia, which invaded Ukraine both before and after Trump didn't dare do such a thing while he was in office. Harper didn't have such military power. But he had some respect from world leaders. Even Obama, who disagreed with Harper on most things, agreed to exempt Canadians from his Buy American rules; softwood lumber problems; Obama didn't approve KXL, but at least he didn't ban it — until Trudeau took office. It's true that Trudeau opened our borders to every fake refugee in America; but it's also true that the Democrats are bussing migrants up here — easier than deporting them. Speaking of which, did you see our new trailer for our undercover Roxham Road video? Oh well. Back to Ottawa. Dumb and dumber. It's insane that Biden says he's going to run again, and it looks like he means it. It's even crazier that Trudeau will, too. Guest: Barbara Kay, Columnist, National Post speaks on Trudeau Liberals MAID regime.

Let me ask you. Are you at the place where you're unsure about your career? Maybe you're undecided? You probably have an idea of what you want. Or you might have no idea at all. How do you decide your path? How do you set goals? Today's guest, Claudia Miller, is going to help us answer those questions. Claudia is a career coach for women in tech. She helps her clients land jobs in 90 days (or less!) that have around a 50% salary increase. She has a vast background from architecture, management, health, technology, finance, to education and marketing, which she now uses to help her clients. Claudia learned what she knows now out of necessity. Being the first one in her family to even finish eighth grade, she knew she couldn't rely on her family to teach her what she needed to know to advance in her career. She got great grades, was on honor roll, and earned scholarships. Even in high school, she joined internships, networked, looked for mentors, and did everything she thought she had to do. She believed that if she did all these right things, the interviews, and job offers would come after college. But what exactly happened? She had one interview and one job offer. That experience led Claudia to re-evaluate everything she thought she knew about the professional marketplace and she started asking questions. How can I hack this career advancement? How can I increase my salary? How can I get multiple job interviews and offers? What followed was years of learning, multiple career shifts, salary increase at every job offer, and her helping professionals land their next job and put them higher on their career ladder. “When we bring two intersections of industries that are not correlated, that's when you become the expert.” - Claudia Miller Today, Claudia shares many practical tips for leveraging and presenting yourself, networking, learning about the industry, conducting interviews, and even how to secure yourself in this time of evolving AI. “Make sure you take care of your mind and your mindset because if you're not feeling confident, it will leak out to the entire job search process.” - Claudia Miller And in the middle of this recession, layoffs, and job uncertainty, Claudia's advice is to keep a clear mind and not let any of the worries affect this job search. If you're at this place where you need to decide about your career, remember that you can do whatever you put your mind to do as long as you're willing to put in the work and be persistent. How good are you at handling change? Do you handle it well? How sure are you? Joining us today is Elizabeth Powers, a sought-after speaker, facilitator, teacher, and consultant. She is also the CEO of EPower & Associates, Inc., which provides people development in the form of training, coaching, consulting, and events, and is the parent organization for The EPower Change Institute and The Trauma Informed Academy. “The only time we welcome change and are excited by it is if we design the change, we execute the change, and it goes exactly as we want it to. Otherwise, we don't like it very much, because it's imposed on us, and we feel like we lose our ability to make choices.” - Elizabeth Powers Elizabeth's mother has said that Elizabeth has “gone through more change than a chameleon going through a costume ball.” And Elizabeth agrees! She started out as a shoe repairer at a shop that served celebrities where she started out not believing that she could do anything more. One day, a client came in, saw her, and said, “You are way too smart to be doing this. Don't let yourself get stuck here.” That was the first time she felt seen, and she kept that moment tucked in her heart for a long time. Since then, she has worked in public welfare, had (and lost) other jobs, and had to learn how to deal with the different changes in her life. Here are the key topics Elizabeth discusses today: Our mindsets around change Choosing how we respond to change Developing our emotional intelligence and that inner connection to our own feelings “If you can't tolerate the discomfort of learning something new, or of taking in information from other people, you're going to be stuck.” - Elizabeth Powers Today, Elizabeth spends her time helping people deal with change. She speaks to motivate others and to share her own story of hope and healing. And that's exactly what she does in this episode. Do you want to learn how to better deal with change? It's easy to assume that getting the job you want is tied directly to the degree you earned and the specific skills you have. Yet, there is ample opportunity existing outside of your comfort zone that allows you to explore a different career path than the one you expected. Carlene Shapiro, the Vice President of Human Resources for the WNET group, shares her 25 year experience building a career with Pfizer that gave her the opportunity to explore many departments and interests. Charlene started her education focused on being a teacher, but gave herself the space to figure out and experience what she enjoyed more along the way. “One of the things I realized very quickly working in corporate America is that relationships were a key to success.” -Charlene Shapiro In your career, opportunities are dependent on the connections and relationships you build over time. Charlene shares how building a rapport with people in other departments benefited her career. Key insights Charlene shares: Exploring a career path instead of following it Relationship building up and down the chain to build rapport throughout The state of HR and employers retaining employees post-Covid The exciting news is that even with tons of opportunities, there are more opportunities to work remotely if you desire to. Employers are having a hard time making a daily commute and reason to be in office appealing for employees. When weighing options on what your next career move is, make sure that you consider lateral moves and moves that may not include more money. “It's really important to connect to people on a personal level. The ability to work remote has opened the opportunity for you to apply to work in any state and in any country regardless of your location. Seems like the playing field should be level, but the cultural differences and expectations can make it difficult and near impossible to secure employment if you're not conscious of these differences. Julia Kirst is a cross-cultural strategist that helps international professionals secure employment opportunities in the U.S. Julia understands that being highly qualified isn't enough without context and knowledge of cultural values. “Having an awareness of what's normal for the other person is so important. We can only respond properly if we understand how that person is reading us” -Julia Kirst Ideas to consider when applying outside of your country: How to present your skills and credentials Understanding your audience or the gatekeeper is a benefit Interviewers are human and want to be seen and heard also Jula released her book, What the United States Wants, to help broaden the reach of the international clients she consults with one-on-one. She considers her books to be a roadmap and guide that can be used as a resource when applying for study, work, and visa opportunities in the U.S., but this book can also be a great resource and food for thought if you are U.S. based and applying for international employment opportunities. “I can give them the tools to understand what is expected of them and to present their skills and their credentials in a way that is respected by the gatekeeper” - Julia Kirst Connect with Julia Kirst and sign up for her newsletter for tips and resources she shares in her bi-monthly newsletter website. If your job expected you to keep everything organized, fully stocked, clean, and running smoothly from the start of your shift to the end of your shift, you'd probably expect a pretty busy day. When you meet with your boss and they also add that they need other team members managed, conflicts resolved, clean clothes, meals prepared, and everyone's schedule accommodated, you may feel overwhelmed and exhausted quick. Later, when you realize all the work expected is paying $0.00/hour, you may actually walk and say forget it all. The life of a homemaker involves all of this and more. It's no easy job, and yet many homemakers are taken for granted. Many homemakers are dealing with low self-worth and low self-value when looking to rejoin the workforce. “I'm JUST a homemaker” or “I only stay home with my kids.” Today's guest, Laura Troy, is the President of the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey. Her commitment to helping women navigate the process of going from unpaid work as homemakers to paid work is a passion that began with a personal experience very close to her. “The sad thing is we don't put much value on the homemaker, and the child raising part of the family.” -Laura Troy Helping individuals return to the workforce is a process that requires mental work and preparation, as well as support and encouragement. Laura shares how she's been able help these women boost their confidence and self-worth and see the value they really bring to the table: Recovering from mental and emotional abuse of feeling undervalued Career assessments and skill translation from being a homemaker to skilled and valued employee Providing emotional support to individuals who've lost themselves in years of servitude It's so easy for women in particular to feel marginalized when going through life changing events like divorce, separation, a disabled spouse or other situations. A big part of what Laura is doing is helping people see their worth after what feels like a scary traumatic experience. “All moms are working moms, no matter what, you worked.” - Laura Troy You can connect with The New Jersey Displaced Homemakers and Laura on their website. Having more than one interest or more than one passion isn't so unusual. In fact, most of us have multiple interests and as you go through high school and college you are coerced into choosing one path, one direction, and one career. But why not pursue more than one career? Aside from time, money, and effort, pursuing multiple careers, especially complementary or adjacent careers, makes sense and can lead to a more fulfilling life, in spite of the challenges. Did you set goals for your business at the start of the year, back in January? If you're like most entrepreneurs, I'm sure you did. But, unlike most other entrepreneurs, you are NOT going to wait until December to assess your progress on those goals because we're diving into that right now. In today's post, I'm guiding you through a midyear check-in for your business. Midyear is the perfect time to realistically determine if the path you're on is still serving your larger goals, or if it's time to reroute your GPS to make the most of the second half of 2022. Read on to find out how to organize your own midyear review. And don't worry - this is a judgment and stress-free exercise. Wherever you are right now is exactly where you're supposed to be. We're 6 months into 2022 - exactly halfway through the year. It's the middle of the year, and we're coming up on the summer solstice, which is a beautiful representation of all the light, beauty, and abundance that's ahead of us. I find that now is a really good time to do a midyear business health check. What do I mean by this? Well, let's say you're headed out in your car on a long road trip. At the start, you pop your destination into your GPS and hit the road. Though at some point, when you're making a pit stop, you (along with your GPS) will check the conditions and look out for any upcoming traffic or other issues. Your GPS may end up rerouting you to ensure you're still on the best route to your destination. The same system of assessing your route along the way is also an excellent idea for your business. Most entrepreneurs set goals at the same time in January. Then, they head out into their year focused on trying to achieve X. Some get there, some don't. Come December, they check-in with the original goal and see where they ended up. But here's the thing - January to December is too long of a time to go without a check-in. If you wait the entire year, you miss opportunities to reroute yourself. Your goals may have been better served and more likely to be attained if they'd been assessed along the way and potentially rerouted. And you can only make the decision to reroute if you always know exactly where you are, where you're trying to go, and the obstacles in between. Where are you right now in your business? In beginning your assessment, start by determining where you're at and where you want to go from here. What does my current situation look like? Am I actually producing what I want to produce? Are things happening in the way I want them to happen? Is my business giving me the freedom and joy that I want? Where do I want to go with the rest of my year? The key here, especially as you get rolling, is to not be hard on yourself. Even if you're not where you wanted to be, that's ok. You are exactly where you are. There's no going backwards, so don't beat yourself up over it. Wherever you are right now is exactly where you're supposed to be. Know this, accept this. Acceptance allows you to take a step back and assess the big picture without judgment. Are you where you want to be? If not, what are you going to do about it? Are you fulfilling your purpose on a daily basis and doing what lights you up? Do you feel like your gifts are being put out into the world in a way that serves your clients in the best way possible? You can use this midyear check-in as both a reality check and a wake-up call. How to conduct your midyear business health check Begin by finding a place where you can feel comfortable and get quiet. You want your environment to be a container that supports you. Maybe get a cozy blanket and a journal. During this time, I want you to be a kind guide and mentor to yourself. Because if you're going to be honest with yourself, this is not about shame. This is about grounding yourself into a place where you feel super comfortable to journal on your deepest, most inner thoughts about your current reality, free of judgment. Next, determine how you're spending your days. What is your intention? If you have an intention, you have a focus. And that's how you get better, little by little, day by day. What is it in your business that you want to continue to improve upon? Maybe it's creating more freedom, maybe it's creating more boundaries, maybe it's creating more sales, maybe it's creating more leads, maybe it's finally creating that funnel. Sometimes these goals/intentions can span over multiple weeks. The important thing is that you're not just waking up each day and attacking your to-do list without intention. That's a quick way to lose track of your intended route. In this step, you're ultimately determining where you're at, what's working, what isn't, and what you want to improve upon moving forward. This midyear check-in is also a fantastic time to check on your business' financial health. Take a look at your profit number. Profit is different from revenue, and it's important to note the distinction. Your profit is going to give you your actual income, after expenses. Is this number something that you can live off of, and something that creates the freedom you're seeking? Next, take a look at your business expenses, particularly recurring expenses. Make cuts accordingly for anything that's no longer necessary. Be mindful of where your money is going and how you're spending it. Lastly, determine what you can do to bring in more leads, and thus, more sales and revenue. How can you better serve your clients in a scalable way? Once you complete your midyear check-in, I'd love to hear how it went. DM me on Instagram and let me know what you tapped into. Please also share this with a business friend who needs to do a midyear check in of their own to recalibrate and reset where they're going on their map.
Mental health impacts millions of people and is one of those things people can avoid dealing with their entire lives depending on the culture and part of society they were exposed to. Some cultures view seeking therapy and professional help as a sign of weakness and embarrassment. Among black communities, mental health is only recently being openly discussed. According to NAMI.org, 63% of black people believe that mental health is a sign of weakness, which leads to shame and not having the conversations or seeking the help they need. Over 11 million adults are estimated to have had serious suicidal thoughts (source) More recently, there has been the normalization of mental and emotional health in the workplace. Though Covid took us through one of the worst periods in modern global history, it was also part of the change in mental health conversations between employers and employees. Today's episode is dedicated to a dear friend, Dansby White. Like many people lost to suicide, his sudden and unexpected departure serves as a wake-up call for all of us to check in with our friends, family, and loved ones, especially the ones that appear to be fine. Beverly is giving you 8 tips to maintain mental and emotional health during your job search. The tips being shared are from Chapter 1 of Your GPS to Employment Success, Prepare, Plan, Persist, Persevere. “When the world says give up, hope whispers try it one more time.” -Unknown Resources Mentioned in this Episode: From Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story The National Alliance on Mental Illness Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Thrive Global The Holistic Root to Managing Anxiety The Resiliency Advantage: Master Change: Thrive Under Pressure, and Bounce Back from Setbacks Remember to check-in on the people you care about, and make sure you have someone to talk to when you're not feeling your best. How many times in your career have you heard; your network is your net worth? If you're like the average person, we don't always prioritize or value networking in our respective industries. In fact, you may cringe and shudder at the thought of going to a networking event. For Robert T. Syzba, networking comes easier when the focus is on meeting people and making connections. This perspective has helped Robert pivot from his earlier career in the entertainment industry to become a partner at Seyfarth Shaw overseeing Labor & Employment. “The biggest problem with networking is the fact that it sounds so scary, and the fact that people make it out to be a lot more than that is interesting” -Robert T. Syzba Robert's Reasons and Tips for Networking Discussed: When you don't network, there is a void in your professional development Focus on meeting people, making connections, and making new friends It's not always a direct benefit, but it is an opportunity to build your reputation Tips for introverted people to find other ways to network without social pressure Networking requires you to extend yourself, no way around it. Your GPS works when your car is moving. Even if you're moving in the wrong direction, you will be guided. What does that mean?Take a step even if it's imperfect and you will be guided.A closed door does not mean you're failing. A closed door means that path through that door is not your path at this time or maybe never.Let's use an example of a person who "ghosts" you in a relationship. For those who do not know, "ghosting" is when a person you have some sort of relationship with does not return your calls or texts or just disappears out of your life. Well, ghosting in this example means you are being guided away from that person for now or maybe forever. Example: I was in the car on my way to a work assignment, I was in the Starbucks drivethru. My GPS was on but it was silent with no instructions. After the car started moving again, the GPS started guiding me. I started moving and I was guided again. You have to take action and it doesn't need to be big, it can be small and imperfect. You can still see progress and healing and be productive by taking small actions. Your assignment: Take acton and know that you are guided. It's simple but it requires effort., Remember you are not failing if you reach a closed door. Let's start the meeting.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey did you know we have any Esty Store loaded with products that will help you exercise your courage muscles?Join me on Instagram @Tauralynn
How you show up and present yourself in a meeting, at a workplace or corporate event matters. As the workplace evolves and takes on different shapes as people relocate to working from home environments, and as politics continue to find its way into nearly every corporation, ethics is more important than ever before. Employers have their code of ethics, and many professions have a standard code of ethics that people should be familiar with to keep out of trouble. Beverly thinks of ethics as referring to standards of what's right and wrong. It's important to know your company's' ethics so that you stay in compliance. Debbie Peterson has experienced multiple careers intensely focused and anchored to ethics. As the first and only female elected mayor of Grover Beach, California and a real estate broker with Peterson Team Realty, Debbie shares the basic rules that have helped her navigate a corrupted political system. “I want to show people how to be vigilant.” - Debbie Peterson Some key topics Debbie exposes about ethics: What to do if you're ever in doubt if something is ethical Why word choice is key to calling out unethical behavior What guard rails for proper business conduct includes How to address ethical concerns without jumping to whistleblower Debbie literally wrote a book exposing the corruption that she uncovered in her political office. She and Beverly share two noteworthy rules of thumb: If in doubt, just don't If it doesn't pass the smell test, there's a problem As you observe your current work environment or explore new opportunities, putting company ethics onto your radar may save you from unnecessary trouble and involvement. Not knowing your company's ethical standards isn't an excuse for not speaking up and allowing things to continue. In your personal life, being ethical may not be a conscious thought or an idea you have to think about too hard. You know right from wrong and as a good citizen, you abide by the rules of the society we live in. In the workplace, however, ethics may sound like a different conversation and isn't always black or white. In a 2015 survey, it was stated that 84% of upper and mid-level management polled considered their staff to be inconsiderate and rude, while 65% believed their staff lacked a moral compass. The question becomes, is this an ethical issue or a problem with etiquette. Furthermore, is this the kind of work environment you currently work in, or would you choose to move into a work environment like this? In this episode, Beverly is pointing out the hotspots you need to be aware of around ethics and etiquette. More importantly, this episode can serve as a guide and compass for you in your employment journey as you navigate murky waters with your current employer, or do your research for an employment opportunity you are considering in the future. “It's up to you to do the work necessary to determine whether or not the employers that you're considering seeking employment from are reputable people of integrity, so you don't have any ethical, unethical experiences.” Beverly Williams Key points covered: Actions don't have to be illegal to be unethical Red flags may include communication, wages, and hours What to do if you suspect unethical activity in the workplace Old fashion manners and decent behavior is still “in” Etiquette applies to text, emails, and verbal communication When it comes to being ethical and demonstrating proper etiquette, the important thing to remember is to always put your best foot forward, and conduct yourself honestly and with integrity. Your reputation matters and so does your personal brand. If you received value from this episode, please share and consider leaving a review of this podcast. It is greatly appreciated! When you consider living through a global pandemic that rendered businesses and entire economies helpless, and you consider the number of people that are one paycheck away from being homeless, you have to ask yourself how do people sleep at night knowing they are relying on one income to survive? Technology is changing the landscape of the workforce. Jobs are becoming obsolete, and as technology advances and infiltrates our day to day lives, changing our habits and needs, entire industries are being jeopardized. More reasons exist today than ever before for why having multiple incomes streams isn't a luxury, but a necessity. Michele Banister, a.k.a. Michele Sfakianos, is the ideal example of what having multiple income streams can be. She is a registered nurse, a certified coach, a speaker, an educator, a trainer, and a radio host with professional writing services. “There's plenty of resources out there that can point you in the right direction. So the only person that can take responsibility for moving is yourself.” -Michele Banister Key ideas from Michele: Unlikely educational path Juggling multiple jobs with kids at home How to reinvent yourself How to quit the right way After hearing this episode, you should be ready to plan out potential income streams beyond where you are at the moment. Think vertically and horizontally and consider what adjacent industries and skills you can put to work, or skills you can develop. Starting with one additional income stream will help build your confidence. The Great Resignation has been receiving a lot of attention from the media over the past few months. Employers are scrambling and creating new incentives and packages to retain quality employees. Yet there are still employees who are on the fence and considering what their next move should be. Should they join the rest and leave their employer, or stay and make the best of the situation? Mitch Case's journey from employee to entrepreneur may hold the key to what some of you may need to hear. Mitch transitioned from full-time mechanical engineer to entrepreneur, but it was not a brash decision. Initially, his company, More Than a Meal, was in the passion hobby. “I decided to walk away from my engineering career, and go full time into our business “More Than a Meal” to say that I can look back in 20 years and say, ‘even if I fall flat on my face, [...] I went into something that I believed in', and I had the right things in place” -Mitch Case Mitch started a personal growth journey and began to sort through and recognize what he valued, what brought him joy, filled him with purpose, and gave him meaning. Mitch's 3 tips for anyone transitioning to entrepreneurship: Don't allow money to be your motivator Have a plan in place for how you will transition and grow Talk to as many people as you can who have already transitioned More Than a Meal started from a pain point Mitch and his wife experienced after the birth of their first child. That was the starting point of finding something that held much more value for Mitch than the monotony of his full-time engineering career. “There's no better way to show appreciation than meeting somebody where they are at.” -Mitch Case One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is seeing first-hand what can be created when your passions begin to align with your values in a way that serves others. Mitch's story is filled with opportunities to develop meaningful relationships with value through and through. Hopefully, you have begun to pursue a career that you are passionate about. If you are one of the lucky ones, it's necessary to balance pursuing your passion while holding down a 9-5 job. Regardless of what anyone says, job security matters. Kristen J. Eddy is a full-time employee by day and a thriving TV production and talent management freelancer by night, so to speak. She joins Beverly to share her employment journey and reveals how she is navigating the best of both worlds. “My growth, my evolution of accepting things as they are and relaxing involves watching things fall into place accordingly, and just knowing that things are going to work out as they should….” -Kristen J. Eddy Kristen's employment journey involves working on TV production and with talented comedians in the entertainment industry. She candidly shares what it's like to be torn between wanting the security of a regular job and coming alive in pursuit of her creativity as a TV production freelancer. Key Areas Discussed: Defining unconventional networking Recognizing opportunities and missed opportunities Being respected and commanding respect from your employer and clients “The most expensive mistake is a missed opportunity.” -Beverly Williams quoting H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Having the confidence to act on opportunities and the skill to handle opportunities you may not be prepared to act on immediately can make or break a career. These ladies share how opportunities have led to painful disappointments in some cases. As you proceed on your employment journey, remember that working a 9-5 does not mean that you need to live a life devoid of passion and fulfillment. Often people make excuses and create obstacles and roadblocks for why they are not pursuing their dreams. Kristen's journey is evidence of what it means to pursue your passion while appreciating the job security you've come to rely on. The right small steps will get you moving in the right direction. Whether you have a bachelor's degree, master's, or no degree at all, it is important to remember that formal education does not define success or your ability to obtain success. In fact, it is well documented that a college degree is not required to be successful. Salimah Williams is joining Beverly to share her interesting educational journey and career planning in real time. Like so many others, what Salimah started off dreaming about has not become the passion she pursues today. “Success means different things to different people. I encourage you to define success.” -Beverly Williams As Beverly is a strong advocate for charting your career path, she encourages you to take the time to define what success means to you given your personal preferences and experiences. In this episode, Salimah shares her journey from fashion designer, to pursuing a career in nursing, and to applying for a master's program in public health. Key Areas of Focus: ● Network within your professional field early. ● Select your role models carefully. ● Create a professional portfolio (even while in school) ● Develop a career plan with room for unplanned opportunities. “You don't want to be completely dialed in to the exclusion of an opportunity that may present itself, one that can catapult you to where you want to go more quickly” -Beverly Williams This episode is packed with prime examples of two widely different educational journeys. Both Beverly and Salimah share their ups and downs, likes, and dislikes, and experiences applying for educational programs and opportunities. Charting your employment journey may not be easy. It helps however to have a career plan that includes steps to take along the way. Hopefully, taking these steps will serve you well. A key lesson to remember is that “opportunity does not always present itself in a recognizable way.” You have to be vigilant in your pursuit and open to exploring new possibilities as they arise. Then we become panicked by it, fear and anxiety set in and our mind goes to a place it doesn't want to be.There are times when we need to plug into another source as well. Our friends are the extension cord to help plug us in when we can't seem to do it on our own. We all carry a little more weight from time to time and need others to help lift us up. In this episode of the Double Up Podcast we focused on the concept of Passion and Discipline. A passion gives you a reason to keep learning and to work toward mastery. Passion, an overwhelming drive to reach one's goals, is the one factor that unites all successful people in equal measure. Discipline brings stability and structure into a person's life. If there were no discipline, people would do whatever they wanted and make mistakes without putting the consideration of themselves and others first. When I started this journey almost three years ago, I'd been studying parenting and self-help books, as well as business books. I had been wondering what it takes to have a successful family. See, for several years, it had felt like Michael and I were floundering! We had a solid relationship, but we were miserable around everything else in life. We were stressed out, mostly. Michael was underemployed, we were living in one of the most expensive areas of the nation. We were digging ourselves into a grave of debt. We were missing some of the crucial components of a successful family culture. First, the vehicle. Family culture is about your family's identity. We're a minivan family, right! Like, figuring out who your family is, is just the first step in shaping your family culture. We're Michael and Jodi, and we have four kids. We live simple, private lives. The vehicle gets your started on your journey, but where do you want to go in that vehicle? Second, you need a destination! When we first got started, of course we had a destination -- eternity! But really, what does that mean? What do we really want to accomplish and become as we travel toward that destination? That's where a mission statement comes in. Your family mission statement is your destination! Third, a GPS. What does that mean? When you get started out toward your destination, you probably have a general idea how to get there. But soon, you find yourself on unfamiliar roads. What do you do? You bust out your GPS and see where you are in the world. That global positioning allows you to get a big picture so you can envision the next steps in your journey. Your GPS is your family vision. Where do you picture your family in ten years, twenty, thirty, forty years? That's your vision. It's where your legacy develops. Fourth, every navigator needs a compass. A compass keeps you oriented to north and south. In a family, we need to know how to stay oriented to our True North -- the core values that inform your decisions along the journey! Your core values are those things like integrity, unity, faith, or work ethic. These core values inform your other values and decisions! Fifth, maintenance for your vehicle. How do you keep up with your identity and values? A car needs refueling, oil changes, tire rotations, and all kinds of other stuff that keeps your vehicle running smoothly. A family culture needs maintenance, too! The fuel for a family is fun and uplifting activities. Your maintenance happens during family meetings, vacations, family history research, and checking in on our vision and mission. Every family needs regular check ups to make sure everything is going well! Finally, you need a roadmap! Doesn't that seem a little old-fashioned? Nope. When everything else seems to break down, it's time to bust out the analog tools. A roadmap is what you need when things don't seem to be going according to plan. You need to have a strategy for detours and roadblocks. It's also your strategy for slowdowns and traffic. How are you going to navigate these things that seem to sidetrack your journey? The roadmap is a powerful tool but it takes practice to learn how to use it. I have created a course with powerful strategies for helping your family navigate the roadblocks every family faces on this journey of developing our family culture. I almost have it finished and will be launching this course very soon! In the meantime, I want to hear from you! You can email me, or go to the shortest survey ever (2 questions) and opt in for updates. You will also be given access to something new I am planning. I will be hosting a live 30-minutes strategy call via Zoom for anyone who opts in and wants to join! This is the platform I use for my interviews so it'll be like you're my guest! You can join in via audio, video, both, or neither and just listen! This will be happening every Friday at 12:00PM Eastern Time. I hope you can make it! Join the Family Success Toolkit Free...

We're all pounded with the whole concept of success. We think that it means more money, more fame, more power. And yet when confronted with defining our own success, we realise there's something we haven't quite defined. In this episode we explore why feeling like a fraud is normal; why seemingly successful people define themselves differently when the spotlight is removed; why space is so critical to creating that identity. / / Identity is what holds us back. Useful Resources How To Increase Your Pricing— Dartboard Pricing Why Headlines Fail—The Report Psychotactics Newsletter—Weekly slightly crazy, mostly zany marketing newsletter Audio and Transcript—Three Obstacles To Happiness (And How To Overcome Them) The Transcript This is the Three Month Vacation. I’m Sean D’Souza. The Cherokee elder stood before his students and he told them of two wolves that live and battle within each one of us. One of these wolves, he explained, is ill-natured. It sees the worst in people and things. It thinks only of itself. It is vengeful, jealous, arrogant. It’s full of ego and false pride. The other wolf sees the best in people and things. It is kind, it is generous, it is peaceful. It is full of integrity and respect for love itself and others. One of the students asks the chief which one of these wolves wins the battle. The elder replied, “Whichever one you feed. Whichever one you feed, that is your identity.” When I started out in marketing, it was very easy for me to get fed by a lot of stuff around me. When you’re on Facebook, when you’re on the internet, there is a whole lot of junk out there. That junk makes you feel small. It makes you feel insignificant, and you’ve got to build an identity with the situation around you. How do you do it? In today’s episode we will cover the three elements of what was my journey. Also, it’s going to be your journey. The first element is one of feeling like a fraud. The second one is just one of success. What does it mean? Finally, the third one, which is one of space and why it’s so important. Part 1: Feeling Like A Fraud When you look at January of 2001, I didn’t really feel like a fraud, but by December of 2001 I was feeling more and more insecure. What happened between January and December to create all this insecurity? For many years, even as I was a kid, I used to draw. I was extremely shy, and I’ve been drawing my whole life. I became a cartoonist. I became a writer. That’s what shy people do. As I moved into the world of marketing, that completely threw me. I didn’t know that much about marketing. I didn’t know how people think, what they do, how they buy, the prices that they decide on. But I read this book by Jim Collins, which was called Good to Great. It asked what can you be the best in the world at. I thought I love the cartooning, I love the writing, but I want to do something different. The answer lay, strangely, in marketing. I was not into marketing. I just didn’t understand it. In all the years that I had run the cartooning business, I had done very little organized marketing. It was a good thing, because we moved to New Zealand and the public library was accessible, which was different from India. I stepped into the library and I picked up ten books. Then I picked up another ten books. Then eventually the librarian realized that I was picking up a lot of books so they gave me an allocation where I could take 30 books at a time. I read those books. The more I read it, the less confident I got, the more I felt like a fraud. But because I had no choice, I went out there and I spoke with clients. I spoke at small little events. The feeling of being a fraud didn’t go away. It always seemed like someone would tap me on the shoulder and say, “Okay, your time is up. You’ve been talking nonsense for quite a while now and it’s time for me to get in here.” Six months passed, and a year passed. That tap never came. Then I did a trip to the US and I met with other marketers and I spoke with them. An interesting thing happened. I realized that these guys don’t know that much more than I do. In fact, I know quite a few things that they don’t know. That’s when that fraud label just slipped off and fell into the drain. It never came back again. It never came back again for me as a marketer but it came back again in different ways. When I write a book, for instance, I just wrote the book on Dartboard Pricing, again, that whole fraud feeling came out. I have made this presentation in Chicago. I made another presentation in Denver. I’ve written so much about pricing. It’s all on the website. It’s on the blog. It’s in our membership site at 5000bc. I’ve explained it at length. The feeling of being a fraud comes out because you feel what else is there to say. If I write this book, people will have read all of this information. They will think wait a second, he’s just rehashing everything. Then when I send out early copies of the book to clients just so that they can read and send out some testimonials, and they come back and go, “I’m so excited,” and I think what, I already said all this stuff. It’s different. They haven’t experienced it from the concept of a book, a system, step by step going through the whole logic. Even though I may feel like a fraud when I’m writing the book or putting it out there, that’s just a bit of my own insecurity coming in. They don’t feel that at all. They feel this stuff is really cool. This feeling keeps coming back. I remember when we were in Washington D.C. and we did a workshop on The Brain Audit. I was very nervous. I didn’t sleep that night simply because when I stood in front of that audience I thought they’ve already read The Brain Audit. These were people who bought the first version of The Brain Audit, version two, version three. Now they’re sitting in the audience and I’m going to say the very same thing. I’m going to tell them exactly what they read about. I should have paid attention. They bought version one, version two, version three. Obviously every version was bringing them a different angle, a different perspective, and my presentation was going to bring a different perspective. That’s not how I felt. I felt like a fraud. I felt like something is going to go wrong. Someone is going to tap me on the shoulder. No one did. In fact, when we came out after the first break, everyone was going, “Wow, I didn’t know The Brain Audit was like this. I perceived it to be different.” That’s it. You start out in life feeling a little insecure. You change professions, you feel insecure. You change your system. You write a book. You give a presentation. It doesn’t matter what happens. The moment you change midstream, it’s like being in a strange city and you’re not very confident. You’re completely lost. Your GPS is not working, and your soul needs to be a pilot, as Sting would say. But Sting isn’t sitting in my chair, is he? I didn’t feel that way, and it comes back. What you’ve got to understand is that part of your identity is always going to be that you’re unsure, and that’s great. This takes us to the second part of today, which is the whole feeling of success. What is success, and how do you cope with it? Part 2: The Whole Feeling of Success When you ask people what is their definition of success, they come up with various definitions. The thing that shows up is a lot of philosophy. People get very philosophical about the fact that success is this and success is that. When you look at the books and you look at the awards, the success parameters become very claustrophobic. In New Zealand we have an award for the Fast 50. On Forbes you have maybe the top 100 companies or the top 100 CEOs. Their success is all benchmarked by how many dollars they have in the bank or how quickly they got to the top. When you look at so many blogs, what you find is the definition of success becomes one of taking shortcuts, of things like the four-hour work week. Four hours? What kind of genius can you create in four hours in a work week? Sometimes you’ll get the contrast. They will talk about quick meals and then slow cooking. Mostly success is benchmarked by money, by speed, and by shortcuts. That becomes our identity, because it’s all around us. This is how it’s always been. It’s not just something that showed up yesterday. When we go back 100 years, 200 years, 500 years, 1,000 years, success has always been about money, speed, and shortcuts. And power, let’s not forget about power. The point is, as human beings this makes us very happy: the money, the speed, the power. All this stuff makes us really happy. Fair enough, because we can’t really do without it. But we can also change things a bit and we can set a different benchmark. When I started out Psychotactics I didn’t know how to set this benchmark, but I knew that I wanted to be different in some way. Over the years, this difference has morphed. Suddenly our books, the ebooks, are different from everybody else’s ebooks. They’re different because they have less information but more depth of that information. Instead of pummeling you with endless amounts of data and more data, they cluster around a few important elements. For instance, if you read Dartboard Pricing you would find that when we deal with sequential pricing, only three points are being covered, but those three points are being covered in-depth. When you cover this in-depth, what you have is the power to empower. No, yeah, power to empower. Empowerment is really what happens there. Over time, this has become one of the more important elements of what we would define as success. It’s not the ability to sell more books or courses or workshops, but to be more like a pilot that takes all the passengers across. It’s very easy to start a course or a workshop or have a book and not have everyone consume it. Our goal has been different. Our goal is how do we get them to the endpoint. That becomes a benchmark for success. On a personal scale, the Three Month Vacation becomes a benchmark for success. How can we run our business so that we can get away, that we can eat the food that we want, travel the way we want, relax, and then come back refreshed so that we can do better work. That has become a benchmark for success. Now invariably, the money and the shortcuts and the power and all that stuff has got to sneak in, but it doesn’t become the whole reason why we do stuff. When I go to events, I meet with a lot of speakers. They’re all hanging around the corridor. They’re not essentially speaking to anybody else but the other speakers. All of them are saying exactly the same thing. They want to be home with their munchkins and they want to spend time with them at the swimming pool. They want to go to school with them. They want to do all this stuff. Yet when they present themselves to the world they’re talking about I did three million miles. I made so much money. I spoke at so many events. They present a completely different view to the world, yet when you’re backstage, when they’re in the corridor, they’re talking about being home, about not wanting to friendly, about being sick about getting on another plane. What they seem to present as success is not really what they feel is success. Going to that school event, going to that pool and jumping in the pool with the kid, that’s success to them. I thought that the Three Month Vacation was kind of normal. I thought that people needed breaks. Maybe not three months, but I thought that they needed breaks. When I meet with a lot of my friends in marketing and they talk about wow, it’s amazing that you’re able to do this … These are people who are extremely, what we call, successful. That’s when I realized that setting these benchmarks for myself, setting this identity of who I really am, is critical. This is what you’ve got to do as well. What is really your identity of success, other than the money and the power and the shortcuts, which are fine. It’s just that you’ve got to have that other identity that you know wow, I’ve reached this goal. Maybe that benchmark, that identity is just to get to the beach 300 days in a year and that’s it, and then you know. This is measurable. I can do it and it doesn’t involve that other stuff that other people are portraying. Our identity is almost restricted to being a fraud at some point right through our career. The second thing is one of success and how we define success, and how the world defines success. The third one, and this is something that a lot of people don’t talk about, is just the factor of space, how space defines who we are as human beings. Part 3: The Factor of Space What is this factor of space? I was on my way back home after a walk. I always listen to the podcast on the way back home. I was listening to this writer, Pico Iyer, speaking on the TED stage. He came up with a statement that I had to stop and I had to write it down, because it was so interesting. He was talking about home and movement. He said it’s only by stopping movement that you can see where to go. It’s only by steeping out of your life and your world that you can see what you most deeply care about, and then you can find a home. To me that has been home, that peace, that pause, that stop for refuelling. That has been the most critical element of my life. It’s what gave me identity. It’s what allows me to come back refreshed and do stuff that I want to do. This resonates with me at a different level as well. Because, several years ago I listen to philosopher Wayne Dyer. He used to say it’s the silence between the notes that make the music. I heard it a dozen times and I couldn’t really figure out what he was saying. Then one day I rushed out to the car and I was telling my wife, “Do you know what that means? It’s the quiet. It’s the quiet that makes the music, because when there’s just note after note after note, we get cacophony.” She gave me that look that wives often give you, like what took you so long. Even if you go back in time to one of the greatest masters of our time, Leonardo Da Vinci, he said you have to step away from your work to get perspective. Without space, it’s hard to have an identity that you’re really looking for, that you want to create. It becomes what people call the dream. They’re always searching for it, but to create a real identity instead of a dream, you have to step away and you have to look at yourself from a different space. Then you come back a changed person. You’re not completely changed but somewhere some of those notes have changed. That makes for beautiful music. The Cherokee elder stood before his students and told them of the two wolves that live and battle within each of us. One of those wolves, he explained, is ill-nature. It sees the worst in people and things. It thinks only of itself. It is vengeful, and jealous, and arrogant, and full of ego and false pride. The other wolf sees the best in people and things. It is kind, it is generous, it is peaceful. It is full of integrity and respect for love itself and others. One of the students asks the chief which one of these wolves wins the battle. The elder replied, “Whichever one you feed.” You’re going to be fed with this concept of being a fraud. You’re going to be fed with this concept of imaginary success, what the world defines as success, not what you define as success. The wolf that you really need to feed is the one that brings you peace, that brings that space so that you can create your own music. Summary That brings us to the end of this podcast, but before we go, let’s see the one thing that you can do today. Personally, I think it’s hard to get over that feeling of being a fraud. It comes back no matter how confident you are. Believe me, I’m a very confident person. Yes, we’ve got to create that space. We have to say let’s not take a three month vacation right now but let’s take a weekend maybe two weeks from now, just a break. No email, no phone, just a break. Definitely no Facebook. What’s the one thing you can do today? What you can do today is to define your benchmark, your identity of success. What is it that brings you or will bring you the most happiness? That will make a huge difference. It will make a difference to who you are and where you’re going to go tomorrow. That will determine which wolf you’re going to feed. If you can leave a review, that would be really, really cool. That’s me, Sean D’Souza, from the Three Month Vacation, saying thanks again and bye for now. Go feed that wolf. You’re still listening? People often ask me: Have you ever skipped a vacation? The answer is yes. We did that once. We thought it was more important for us to work and complete some projects and stuff. We did in four months what we normally do in three. That time that we should have been spending away, we were working and getting more and more tired and frustrated. Then eventually we just got on a plane and went off to Sydney for a week. It was terrible. Not Sydney, just the week. It was like you just did something for the sake of doing it. It wasn’t planned or interesting. Then we came back and we were different but not as different as if it were planned. Yes, we have skipped it. There you have it, a little snippet from the Psychotactics archive. Bye for now. You can also listen to or read this episode: #45: The Secret To Getting Your Report Read (From Start To Finish)
