Intro Reminder to read The Longbox View Background James Gordon Jr. created by Frank Miller and Dave Mazzuchelli in Batman #407 (May 1987) Son of Jim Gordon and his first wife Barbara Jim Jr. was kidnapped by the Falcone crime family shortly after Jim Sr. moved to Gotham and became known as an incorruptible cop - Jim Jr. was tossed off a bridge, but saved by the new vigilante known as Batman Not much known until Black Mirror - revealed that Jim Jr. suffers from an imbalance in his amygdala, leaving him unable to process emotions in a typical manner As a young man, he liked to kill and torture animals, worrying his parents Implicated in the disappearance of one of his sister Barbara's friends, although nothing was ever proven As an adult, he attempts to reconnect with his father and sister, telling them he's on medication that helps stabilize him, and he's helping Dr. Leslie Thompkins Jim Sr. doesn't trust this, and has Barbara analyze the medication - turns out he reversed its effects, and he plans on dosing a children's nutritional facility to increase homicidal tendencies He stabs Barbara in both legs, and tells her he helped break Joker out of Arkham before the Killing Joke - makes comment that he inspired Joker to shoot Barbara in the spine Also tells Batman (Dick Grayson) that empathy makes men weak - Barbara stabs him in the eye and his father shoots him in both legs New 52 - inmate at Arkham who drugged his sister and traded her to Joker in exchange for their mother Recruited into the Suicide Squad and joined because he was in love with Amanda Waller Reformed thanks to an experimental drug, and helped defeat the Batman Who Laughs Developed a split personality obsessed with killing redheads, but when confronted by Barbara, he realized what he had done and killed himself in remorse Issues (8:17) Trauma of being kidnapped (even if he was a baby) and being a target because of his father Amygdala issues means problems processing emotions (20:08) Views empathy as making people “weak” (30:35) Break (47:17) Plugs for BetterHelp, Ocho Duro Parlay Hour, and Howard Mackie Treatment (49:00) In-universe - Use Harley Quinn to help  Out of universe - Lengthy treatment utilizing SSRIs/medication and a team of professionals (54:18) Skit (60:02) Hello James, I'm Dr. Issues. - And how long have you been a doctor? Including residency, 12 years. - In all that time, how many patients have you successfully reformed? I don't think of it in those terms. “Reformed” carries an all-or-nothing mindset. My focus is on meeting patients where they are, and helping them achieve whatever measure of success they're looking for. -So none. That's unfortunately the benchmark for your ilk. You just ignored everything I said. -No, I'm refuting your hypothesis. You were trying to set up a strawman. I just subverted you before you could get it going.  Opposite again. I would allow you to steelman...bring your greatest argument, and I can still get a positive point across. All it takes is a questioning thought, and a person's automatic system can change. -You allow others to be at their strongest and barely make a dent in their psyche. *sarcastic clap* Bravo doctor. I see you've given a lot of thought to this. Specifically, you've spent your free time on ways to make professionals expend extra effort so you can drag them to your level and beat them with experience. I hope that doesn't happen to me, but I KNOW it won't happen from one session. This is refreshing in a way, because you're so brazen about it. -*pause* I recognize the “don't argue with an idiot” cliche when I hear it. How juvenile can you be?  I'm a big kid at heart, sometimes. I know you're intelligent, so I didn't think you'd be offended by an obvious joke. If you were, then I apologize. -Shame. “Big kid” apologizing, I'm sure that draws people to your humanism, but it doesn't make them listen to your advice. It makes them question why they don't just listen to their OWN child. At least that's someone they can care about. You're insignificant to them, and they don't matter one bit to you. *Anger* Whoa, whoa...I care about my patients! I wouldn't do this job if I didn't care about each person I see. I just have my own boundaries so I don't drain myself every day. -Draining yourself...another frailty. You can't handle the basic burdens of a layperson's life. I see it. You're sweating...your skin is almost slimy, it's pathetic. I didn't come to your cell to be insulted. -*simultaneously* So where do you usually go? Aw man, that was so easy. For someone trying to knock me as weak, you still took the bait for a bad joke like that. -I learned a long time ago that finding a basic connection with someone can make future endeavors much easier with them. *pause* You don't think my field is worth it, but you're talking about future sessions? I'm missing something. -You're missing everything. This is not a session about therapy. This is a session about strategy. I tried being subtle with your kind before. It almost got me killed. I play with medicines like candy. If you let me, I could make any inmate be your most compliant patient. Suffering is the strongest motivator. Take your benzodiazepine, or drink bleach. Here's an antipsychotic...or barbed wire wrapped around your genitalia. Their choice, but either way, they're following a “treatment plan.”  *long pause* I know I'm supposed to have some big emotional reaction to what you just said, but my own warped brain doesn't allow for it. Therefore, I'll just say it plainly...torture is not a treatment modality. -But it Aaaaaaaand, for people unlike you, it's not fun. -That's the first time so far that you've correctly pre-empted me. It's likely your last, in part due to your own flaws again. I already told you, one session won't make me drained, I'm not as weak as you think. -Care to wager? *fizzing sound* GAAAAAAAAH What on Earth was that?! My arm! -That, oh doctor of medicine, is a rare toxin that absorbs rapidly through the skin. Picked up a thing or two while I shared a cell with the Joker. I believe you've met? You have a few minutes to experience all of your sensations leaving your consciousness, and put you into a state of...what was that term…”locked in syndrome?” I thought what I did to Barbara made her world slow down, but to suspend yours forever? I could've never dreamed of a better opportunity. Well, if it affects you too strongly, you'll die. Details, details. And don't worry, I know it works because I already disseminated it on the staff and guards in a less noticeable and low potency form. They're as weak as kittens right now and don't even know it.  *unintelligible whispers* -*mockingly* I'm sorry, what was that? It's hard to hear you from this end of relevance. Have you changed my thought pattern yet?  *whispers audibly* My...pen...get my pen... -Oh, that IS a fancy pen you've dropped, isn't it? Monogrammed and everything. You come across more humble than that. Looking to write a last note to loved ones, hmmm? Oh...OOOOOOH, I see, probably a backup plan for you to activate in case of emergency. I'll just keep it for myself then *zapping sound, with a thud* Or, you could activate it yourself because it is biocoded to me. -huuuuuh Oh no, no monologues, you did yours already. And I'm declining you as a patient! ***Explanation actually comes AFTER the skit for once*** Ending Recommended reading: Batman: The Black Mirror Next episodes: Shang-Chi, Crystal, Emma Frost Plugs for social References: Prosopagnosia - Anthony (28:16) BatMarch - Anthony (31:24) Joker episode - Anthony (70:55) Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Spotify: here Twitter Facebook Patreon TeePublic Discord

Aaaaaaaand... we're back! Our dedicated Poppy is job searching, and is inexplicably rejected by a place with impossible standards. While budgeting, she receives a text from Benjamin, and is so distracted that she misses the bus. We soon see her sitting with Benjamin at the best sliced beef noodle soup joint in Narin City, per Ben. Ben apologizes for stealing her pin and then proceeds to attack Poppy with a barrage of rude and clueless statements. His judgment helps Poppy realize that perhaps she's been doing a bit of judging of her own. Their conversation is interrupted by a very nosy cockroach, causing Ben to fling his soup all over a mysterious velvet suited person. We switch scenes to a game hall, where we (breath sigh of relief) see our beloved Tiger boy. He wins against Neko-Chan but returns the money - what was he saving up for before? Back at the restaurant, the mysterious velvet suited man turns out to be none other than Mr. Rude Waffle House son, only with a clothing upgrade. Real name: Dollar Store Jared Leto/Lizard Person. He comes with backup, and is threatening Poppy and Ben. The nearby vendors think about intervening, and recall how both of Alice's boys were the only ones who cared about them. We pull back to Tora smoking outside the game hall, contemplating the hazy sky. His peace is interrupted by the sight of Poppy running full speed at him, yelling, "Run!"

That’s why he has been seen in big fat shows like Wicked as Boq, and Frozen as Olaf, but did you know that he know he has an INSANE knowledge for the lore of the Super Mario Universe?!? I think it’s common knowledge by now that F originated the role of Augustus Gloop in Broadway’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, but did you know that he originally had dreams of being a band instructor?? I mean, I’d bet you knew all about his work in the “Carrie” revival or the original cast of “Dogfight” but did you know that he and Tony nominee used to sing in an a cappella group in college together? From Call of Duty to Farming Simulator, the perspective we see these games through dictates how we experience games. In this episode we ask ourselves what about these two viewpoints impacts us and how do they impact the stories and experiences they present. Does third person make for a more immersive experience or first person? When you are playing an RPG with a created character, is third or first person better? Do you play Battle Royale games in third or first person? The questions are nearly endless, but the crew comes to a few pretty solid conclusions. Aaaaaaaand, we're back!! We took a very short break after finishing up 60 Days of Halloween, but we just couldn't stay away for long! And what better way to get back into the swing of things than the perfect movie to bridge the ending of Halloween season and the start of the Christmas season - The Nightmare Before Christmas!! Now that 60 Days of Halloween is over, we will not be putting out a daily podcast. However, we are going to do our best to put out a weekly episode. Sometimes these episodes will be reviews, sometimes they will be deeper analysis episodes, and sometimes they will be more of just general discussions about a certain topic - but they will almost always be centered around movies (there will, occasionally, be episodes that are not directly related to movies). So, if you enjoy this episode, be sure to check back soon for more cinematic reviews, analyses, and discussions on The Gargyle Podcast - where geekery abounds!! We step away from the normal format of the show in order to hold space for the passing of Larry Harvey. Burner Podcast team members Navjeet Sarna and Tori Massie join Arash to read messages and stories written to and about The Man in the Hat.    Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, iHeart Radio, Mixcloud or SoundCloud.        *******************   Lynn Marie Morski... I attended my first burn amid much strife in my capoeira life. I had wanted to play in the orchestra that leads the capoeira games, but my low status in the group prevented me from doing so. In capoeira,` your cord (belt) color is a rank like other martial arts, and only the higher cords were allowed to play instruments. But not on the playa. I went to a capoeira class my first day and there were no cords, no hierarchy. When it came time to play, I asked who was going to lead the orchestra. They said whomever could lead...So *I* led. For the first time ever. And I've never looked back. Thanks, Larry, for creating a hierarchy-less paradise for me to find my strength and my home in the orchestra. ******************* Arthur Mamou-Mani... Larry Harvey - you are in our thoughts. The Temple 2018 will be here for you and for the community that you have so deeply inspired and changed for the better. ******************* Amy Vogler…. The result of your little beach bonfire party has changed the course of my life in so many aspects, and exposed me to more love, compassion, & creativity than I thought possible; within the community, and within myself. Thanks for your participation! ******************* Kat Ripley…. R.I.P. Larry Harvey Thank you so much for all you have done for humanity. I think it would be impossible to overstate the positive impact you made across the globe. I don’t know if I can make one one hundredth of an impact on this world as you have, but I promise I will try. ******************* Absinthia Vermut…. I first remember Larry when I was still at Burning Man, two days after the Man burned in 1995. I celebrated my 25th birthday on playa, fell madly in love with Burning Man, and I stayed to clean up. I just couldn't leave! A year earlier, I had moved to San Francisco, a dream I had since I first visited as a young girl. I never dreamed I would find something like Burning Man in an incredible location like Black Rock Desert, but there I was. Home. Two years later, I remember Larry pulling my then boyfriend, Paul Addis, and me into a meeting late one night on Hualapai Playa. We were there with maybe two dozen others as he explained that the sheriff had relieved the gate of its cash, and he needed us to walk around and collect cash donations from participants. Of course, we did. He offered me a lifetime ticket to Burning Man for $500. I was a starving artist and couldn’t afford it, but more importantly, I thought it was a terrible idea and a huge waste of money. There was no way this thing would continue! Turns out Larry was as much of a pitbull with Burning Man as I have been with my absinthe. That was right around the time I started bootlegging absinthe, and Larry was a huge fan, perhaps my biggest. Since his passing, a friend told me that there was a night when Larry, Flash, and Peter were craving absinthe and set out into Black Rock City to find some. To find me. As they wandered through camps asking if Absinthia was camped there, they left a trail of participants asking, “Was that….Larry Harvey?” I have memories of him at the Anon Salons, holding court with a neon green glass in his hand. One memory in particular stands out, where he had five glasses and was quite belligerent. Marian was there and while she was annoyed by his behavior, we also found it hilarious and endearing. A performer named Magenta was there that night and met him on that fifth glass of absinthe, and then wowed us all by spinning in circles with a knife on her scarved head.I once witnessed Larry managing his fame. I was in first camp and saw him on the poop deck. I walked up to say hello, and he said a very formal “Yes, hello” without looking up. A moment later, he did and caught my eye, “OH! Hello dear, how are you?” It was clear that he heard “Hello Larry” often from people he didn’t know. It was interesting to be treated like a stranger and then recognized by a man whom everyone knew. Ah, playa celebrity. But of course, he was more than that. So much more. The moment made me stop and think what it must be like to walk through Black Rock City as Larry Harvey. Have you ever thought about that? The last time I saw Larry was burn night 2017. I was walking back from the burn to Marian’s absinthe bar to serve my absinthe, my burn night tradition. I had just witnessed a man dive into the fire, and I was completely shell shocked. I remember telling Larry this, and he, too, seemed shell shocked. We didn’t have that nice warm welcome that we usually have. It was too intense of an evening for us all.My favorite story of Larry occured burn night in 2015. I arrived at Marian’s pop up absinthe bar, and no one was around. I found a black baseball cap that said, MEOW, in the bar, and put that on without a second thought. I wandered over to first camp to drum up some interest. I walked in, and Larry caught my eye and gave me a huge smile. Now, Larry had never ever flirted with me before, he was always like an uncle to me, my crazy Uncle Larry, but on this night, I was dressed as Marian, with an all black outfit, a long blonde wig, and the last minute addition of the MEOW hat. Perhaps the only night I have ever not worn green on playa, I was Absinthia dressed as Marian serving Absinthia’s absinthe in Marian’s pop up bar. Larry didn’t leave my side all night. He escorted me back to the bar and I served him and many others absinthe that evening. A lot of absinthe. I said, “MEOW” a lot; what else does one say when they are mimicking Maid Marian? Larry told the story of how he had almost been arrested earlier that night during the burn. The Man was taking forever to burn, and Larry was getting worried. He also wasn’t wearing his Hat - I had witnessed him toss it into the crowd at the GLC a few years prior. He just wasn’t as recognizable without it, and beneath the slowly burning Man, a young LEO, as Larry described him, stopped him and asked him what he was doing so close to the Man, with people lying on the ground nearby watching it burn. “I am worried about it falling,” Larry said.“Well, that is not your concern. Get out of this area.”“Listen, son…” Larry started to say.“Son? Don’t you condescend to me! Now leave this area before I have you arrested and taken away!”Larry loved this story and told it several times that evening. We continued drinking absinthe, talking about such things as what to do about the Plug and Play camps, Larry sharing his ideas about building small Temples in the keyholes, and more. When the evening wore down and we all had more than enough absinthe, Larry offered to drive me, still dressed as Marian, home. I was all the way out in Illumination Village at 3 o’clock and A that year, and welcomed the ride. Larry spent about ten minutes debating with himself whether or not to drive his golf cart or his Jeep, and in the end, the Jeep won. He tried to unlock the door with his key, and I had to hold his arm to help him get the key in the lock. I went around and got in the passenger side to see him put a half full glass of absinthe in the cup holder! “Larry! You are driving me home with a glass of absinthe in the cup holder?” “Of course I am, dear, now let’s get going.” He drove out onto the playa and headed to my camp. “OMG LARRY that is a piece of art!” I hollered when a big something jumped out in front of the car. He slowed down and narrowly missed it. When found my camp, he seemed determined to drive me all the way to my door. Now, IllVille is home to a lot of fire art, which means there are propane tanks, gas lines, and art everywhere. A bad place for anyone to drive, but like I said, he really wanted to drive me to my door. We got to a spot where he had to stop, and I jumped out before he could drive any further into dangerous fire art, grabbed my case of absinthe, and gave him a big hug. I told him I loved him. He seemed embarrassed, and turned his Jeep around and drove home. Thank you, Larry. You created a world I never dreamt I would find. Thanks to you, I found my Island of Misfit Toys and a place where I belong. I came to the playa a shy photographer, hiding behind my camera, and there I found my dreams, my crazy absinthe induced green fairy dreams, and I made them a reality. I am a different person now. We all are. Like all of us, you are flawed, you are human, you are loved. You and your friends gave us the landscape to make magic happen. You left one hell of a trace, my friend.Cheers, Absinthia Vermut ******************* Rebekah Waites... I only met him a few times so don’t really have any stories. I just know that he loved Church Trap and talked about it in interviews. Found out after that he carried a picture of it in his journal. Finding that out meant a lot to me. Only story I have was one on his bday at a party at Headquarters. I didn’t know anyone and am a bit shy. Jennifer Raiser invited me and when i got there told me to go say hi to Larry. When I tried to introduce myself he snapped “I just woke up.” So i ran away. Haha! When Jennifer asked me later if I said hi to him, I said I tried to but it didn’t go over very well. So she told me to go say hi again. This time I caught him in the line for tacos and started to say who I was. His response: “who???!” “Larry... it’s me. Rebekah. Rebekah Waites who did Church Trap.” Aaaaaaaand then I got the biggest hug from Larry and we talked for a moment. It was awesome. I’ll never forget that. ******************* Danielle White... Larry Harvey passed into his next journey. Thank you for the amazing growth, change and experience that this incarnation brought to my life. I am eternally grateful.
