In this week's Mostly Film, we're pitting two Hollywood heavyweights against each other in a cinematic showdown: Tom Cruise in Legend (1985) vs. Leonardo DiCaprio in Body of Lies (2008).First up, we go deep into The Casting of Legend—a pre-Top Gun Cruise donning long locks and fairy-tale armor in Ridley Scott's surreal fantasy epic. We'll talk about how he nearly passed on the role, the version of the film he actually preferred, and how Legend gave us a rare look at Cruise in the fantasy genre—though Tim Curry's devilish performance may have stolen the spotlight. Then we shift gears into the gritty world of Body of Lies, where DiCaprio goes full-on CIA in Ridley Scott's modern spy thriller. From gaining 25 pounds to demanding on-location shooting in Morocco, Leo's dedication was real—and so was the intensity. We'll cover how this film fits into his “gritty realism” era and why his performance is considered one of his most underrated.Plus, we're breaking down The Performances, The Direction, and The Critical Reception—how both actors were shaped (or overshadowed) by their directors, the worlds they stepped into, and the legacies these films left behind. Is Cruise's ethereal Jack a forgotten fantasy prince? Does DiCaprio's Roger Ferris deserve more love in the spy thriller pantheon? You decide. It's fairytale forests vs. Middle Eastern war zones. Light vs. Lies. Cruise vs. DiCaprio.

Summary It's been on our to-do-list for over 2 years, but, finally, the first episode of our Prince side-series is here
Dylan Shaul presents the one of the most important events in modern philosophy, the Pantheism Controversy sparked by the reception of Spinoza in 18th century Germany. The Controversy involved the greatest German philosophers of the period, and laid the foundations for the next 200 years of European thought. In the balance of the Pantheism Controversy hung the fate of the Enlightenment and Modernity; the fate of faith and reason, religion and philosophy; the fate of freedom, of the immortal soul, and even of God Godself. Our story will take us from the renegade Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza, to the heyday of the German Aufklärung or Enlightenment, through the philosophical revolution of Immanuel Kant, and eventually the birth of German Idealism itself. In the first episode of the series, we explored the philosophy of Spinoza and its reception in Germany, which first spurred the controversy. In the second episode we explored Immanuel Kant's response to Spinozism and the Pantheism Controversy, where he attempted to stake out a middle ground between reason and faith. In this third episode we'll tackle Hegel's efforts to solve the Pantheism Controversy by reconciling Spinoza and Kant—thereby attempting to complete the grand journey from nihilism to Absolute Spirit. Dylan Shaul is a PhD candidate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His dissertation is titled Hegel's Concept of Reconciliation: On Absolute Spirit. He has also published on Spinoza, Kant, Kierkegaard, Husserl, Adorno, Levinas, Kristeva, and Derrida. WIND BENEATH MY WINGS Tissues at the ready. We tag along with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershy as they grow old together in the 1980s melodrama Beaches. Find out if we were able to hold back the tears. The song? Oh just some little-known anthem called "Wind Beneath My Wings", as heard at pretty much all funerals. Ben is at a Working Man's Club karaoke night, Dietrich calls out Smooth Radio's poor formatting and Alex has his All Saints outro stolen. Welcome to a new side of the galaxy—a very dark one. The Season 1 premiere of Andor (“Kassa”) is the grittiest Star Wars we've seen so far. Planets are ruled by corporations, sentient beings are for sale on the street, and people are just eking out a living however they can. Also, everyone in the show is already 100% fed up with Cassian Andor, which is…pretty great. In our recap, we talk about Cassian's role as a Star Wars rogue and draw parallels between other beloved intergalactic grifters—Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Hondo Ohnaka. We also dive deep into class systems in Star Wars and make our guesses about how the Kenari plotline will play out. Want even more Growing Up Skywalker? GREAT SCOTT! They finally let Dietrich off the lead! And a wild Dietrich left to his own devices will talk about the TV show Lost or the movie Back To The Future ...and seeing as this is a movie podcast, you can guess which one he picked. We cover the 3 main songs: "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, "Back in Time" also by Huey Lewis and the News, and Marty McFly's cover of Chuck Berry hit "Johnny B. Goode". SO LONG, PARTNER... Happy birthday to us! We are 2 years old and we are celebrating the only way we know how, by covering a Toy Story movie. So this week the critically acclaimed Toy Story 3 is our movie of choice and Randy Newman's stalker anthem "We Belong Together" is the song. Dietrich becomes an official wedding certificating guy, Alex's microphone is really not feeling well and Ben just can't wait for the sequel. THE FRIENDLIEST GHOST YOU KNOW Last year, our Halloween special spooked you with the sound of the Ghostbusters. This year it's the chilling turn of the songs of Casper. Three songs haunt the podcast this week: Digital Underground & Tupac's "Same Song", Jordan Hill's "Remember Me This Way" and Little Richard's cover of the "Casper The Friendly Ghost" theme song. Dietrich has been sliding into stranger's DMs, Alex gives us the rundown of all his Sega consoles and has a love hate relationship with fun facts. “Unexpected” 20th-anniversary reflections Starfleet is known for its willingness to lend a helping hand to ships in need, and the same can be said for the Enterprise in those early days of humanity's space exploration. The discovery that a cloaked alien ship is leaching energy from the NX-01 is met with compassion rather than anger, but Trip Tucker gets more than he bargained for when he ventures over to help the Xyrillians. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we explore “Unexpected” and how humans learn the hard way that, when dealing with first contacts in deep space, even good intentions and innocent interactions can have serious consequences. We also discuss how this lighthearted story—heavily panned by media and fans of the time—further establishes Trip's personality and helps the writers develop his character as the series progresses. Check the windows in your teleportation pod because we're heading up to Toronto to discuss all the gooey goodness in David Cronenberg's seminal horror remake The Fly! Joining us is Bloody Disgusting's lead critic (and co-host of The Bloody Disgusting Podcast): Meagan Navarro!Join us as we trace the film's journey from page to screen (rewrites, Mel Brooks, tragedy and Total Recall) before discussing the film's possible AIDS allegory and, of course, all the praise for the film's outstanding and Oscar-winning special effects.Plus, respect for the film's handling of abortion (in 1986, no less) normalizing the cock and references to Zenon: The Zequel and Cube 2: Hypercube. Hey, it wouldn't be a Cronenberg discussion if it wasn't weird!References:William Beard. The Artist as Monster: The Cinema of David CronenbergWillow Maclay and Caden Gardner. In the guys' journey through Parallel Quest, they have not ventured into the realm of romance at this point in the podcast's life. While Cody and Zach are more interested in adventure and high concept storytelling, there is something to be said about the tried and true success of the romantic comedy. Romcoms are oftentimes predictable with overly recycled plotlines and tropes, but continue on in spite of their flaws, mainly because of the date night potential. However, every once in a while, we encounter a romantic comedy that transcends expectation, entering into a different tier of quality. 10 Things I Hate about You is one such film. A mix of Shakespearean influence with a touch of hyperbolic high school tropes, and topped off with a lot of good laughs throughout, this movie is one that can be enjoyed by people of many different tastes and generations. Sit back, relax and feel free to engage as the Parallel Quest team examines the impact of 10 Things I Hate about You.Watch the show on YouTubeBuy Zach's newest book, Something Strange at Grandma's House: https://www.steellakestudio.com/booksSign up for our E-MAIL LIST: https://www.steellakestudio.com/emailTIMESTAMPS0:00 Welcome3:21 Zach's Lake Day Realization15:00 The Cool Stuff Shirt Story29:25 Updates from Steel Lake Studio32:50 Books We're Reading: Name of the Wind38:50 Books We're Reading: Guns, Germs and Steel40:45 Books We're Reading: Mistborn Series50:54 1999 State of the World1:12:00 Main Topic: Ten Things I Hate About You1:18:00 The Shakespearean Influence1:24:00 Critical Reception and Review1:30:00 The Impact on the Careers of the Stars1:37:00 The Initial Impact of 10 Things1:57:00 Why The Guys Decided to Talk Romcoms2:03:00 What Makes This Movie Work Better than other RomcomsThank you so much for checking out Parallel Quest.
