SMILING THROUGH THE APOCALYPSE—In the past few weeks, Will Welch has taken a bit of flack for letting Beyoncé promote her new whiskey label on the cover of GQ's October issue, with an interview that one X user described as “an intimate email exchange between GQ and several layers of Beyonce's comms team.”Whether that kind of thing rankles you or not—and yes, we asked him about it—in the five years since Welch took over, GQ seems to be doing as well or better than everybody else in the industry. Why? Ask around. He's got a direct line to celebrities, who consider him a personal friend. He's got real credibility with The Fashion People. And because of both of these things, advertisers love him.Perhaps most importantly, his boss Anna Wintour loves him. The Atlanta-born Welch started his career at the alternative music and culture mag the Fader in the early aughts, and jumped to GQ in 2007. For a decade under EIC Jim Nelson, he operated as the magazine's fashion-and-culture svengali, eventually becoming the creative director of the magazine and the editor of the brand's fashion spinoff, GQ Style. In 2019, Wintour tapped him for the big job: Editor-in-Chief of GQ—a title that in 2020 was recast in the current Condé Nast survival-mode as Global Editorial Director of GQ, overseeing 19 editions around the world. After speaking with Welch only a few hours after the Beyonce cover dropped, we get what all the fuss is about. He is a great sport with good hair and just enough of a Southern accent who is confident-yet-never-cocky about his mission at GQ.Let other people bemoan the “death of print.” Will Welch is having a blast at the Last Supper. —This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press. On the first Monday in May each year, celebrities and fashion aficionados the world over descend on New York City for the Met Gala. Who better to consult with about the extravaganza than the master of ceremonies herself, Vogue editor Anna Wintour? In her sit-down last year with Table for Two host and AIR MAIL contributor Bruce Bozzi, Wintour reflected on her involvement in the Met Gala, and how it grew into the star-studded spectacle it is today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hey pals. In January, Condé Nast shocked the entire independent music world when it announced it was laying off most of Pitchfork's staff and folding what remained into GQ. Emilie especially felt this one — Pitchfork was her first media job, working as an editor for their underground music sister-site Altered Zones, which made it particularly strange to hear that the publication was merging with a website for men who can pronounce “visvim.” Whatever you thought about Pitchfork during its three-decade run as a standalone music publication, the image of Anna Wintour wearing sunglasses as she informed the staff about the site's fate pointed to a previously unthinkable reality: If the biggest music publication in the English-speaking world couldn't survive the media bloodbath that is rapidly unfolding all around us, would we soon be living in a world with no music journalism at all? There is no way of knowing exactly how Condé arrived at this decision. Wintour wrote a note to staff saying that “this decision was made after a careful evaluation of Pitchfork's performance and what we believe is the best path forward for the brand so that our coverage of music can continue to thrive within the company” — which doesn't tell us much. Others have accused Condé of doing layoffs as a form of union busting. And it is also safe to say that Pitchfork, like so many digital media publications, was wrestling with many of the larger structural forces we often talk about on this show (see: Google and other distribution platforms deprioritizing news, streaming services' monopoly on music discovery, and declining programmatic advertising revenues).Needless to say, there are a lot of takes floating around. But one in particular — by writer, editor, music scholar, and philosopher Robin James, on her always-intriguing It's Her Factory blog — really caught our eye, especially for the head-on way in which it dealt with the dissonance of Pitchfork being folded into a men's publication. In a post titled “Pitchfork, ‘Bro-ified' Alt Rock Radio, and the Structural Issues in the Financialized Media Industry” Robin frames the move as just one in a long line of examples of corporations turning to male audiences in order to “save” distressed music media properties. Which isn't because men are actually more likely to care about music or music writing, but because it's a logic that plays into the gendered biases of the executive and ownership class. And because in today's heavily financialized economy, business leaders are more concerned with creating the perception of future growth than coming up with solutions that actually work. Robin joins us to talk about what the Pitchfork news can tell us about the persistence of gendered stereotypes around music fandom and consumption, and how media's current woes are a reflection of a larger business landscape where exponential scalability takes precedence over sustainability and even profitability. We also discuss how the financialization of everything has changed the nature of musical fame, and how the age-old poptimism/rockism binary may be increasingly obsolete as a framework for discussing power differentials in music.Support our independent journalism by becoming a paid subscriber at theculturejournalist.substack.com. Like the rest of the increasingly small world of music criticism, we were shaken by the news that Pitchfork had not only been more-or-less gutted by publisher Conde Nast, but pulled into GQ. Gentleman's Quarterly. Of all possible things. G-freaking-Q...? We're not gonna lie—this one feels grim. But, what kind of grim? Events split the team, with Saxon spinning out a narrative of corporate confusion and brand-based failure, while Sam tried to pull some (desperate) fragments of sense from the seemingly nonsensical plan. Is music criticism lifestyle reporting? Is there an economic base for the record review? Will a thousand newsletter flowers bloom? This week we have questions, not answers. And definitely no good vibes. Insert your own "Wintour is the cruelest season" joke here. Subscribe to our newsletter! Follow us on Twitter!

Yet his list of accomplishments was almost as long as his list of controversies. He said he was “fed up” with the #MeToo movement and questioned the claims of victims who came forward during that time. “What shocks me most in all of this are the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened,” Lagerfeld told Numero Magazine. “Not to mention the fact there are no prosecution witnesses.”“One cannot – even if there are decades between them – kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,” Lagerfeld, who was German, said in 2017. He had apparently taken issue with then German chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow Syrian refugees into Germany at the time. “I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust,'” he added. As Rachel Tashjian notes in the Washington Post, Wintour has gone out of her way to champion designers who have been embroiled in the worst of scandals. That list includes John Galliano, Balenciaga designer Demna and Alexander Wang, who was accused in late 2020 of drugging and sexually assaulting several victims. Wang has denied the allegations made against him. The editorial team of Current Affairs is fascinated by the online learning platform MasterClass, on which A-list celebrities offer “classes” that are sometimes very cool but frequently of dubious educational value. We have previously taken and discussed the MasterClasses of Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. (We have not yet mustered the fortitude to sit through the Leadership Lessons From George W. Bush MasterClass.) Today we take and discuss the class offered by longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who offers an introduction to the fashion world and lessons on "How To Be A Boss." We talk about the economic structure of the fashion industry, how fashion is made into something exclusive rather than universal, and the mountain of cruelty (to both people and animals) that sustain this bizarre self-contained world. We are particularly interested in the inner workings of Vogue because it's a such an entirely different part of the magazine industry to the world of Current Affairs. So enjoy as Yasmin, Lily, and Nathan discuss how you, too, can become a famous fashion mogul.Read “The Socialist Case for Fashion” in Current Affairs here. The documentary about Wintour and Vogue, The September Issue, can be watched here. The “cerulean” scene of The Devil Wears Prada is here.
Vogue has been setting trends for decades, led by its legendary editor Anna Wintour, and since 2017, Edward Enninful has overseen its British counterpart. He is the first Black person and first man to hold the role. His agenda-setting, star-powered reign has attracted readers and buzz, all fueling speculation that he was gunning for Wintour's job. But in a revealing conversation with Christiane, Enninful puts the rumors to rest. He tells her how, in his words, he went from dorky immigrant to exotic model, and how he learned to stand up and stand out, making himself A Visible Man. BoF's Imran Amed quizzes Amy Odell on how she went about biographing the fashion media icon, and the surprising things she learned on the way. Background: Anna Wintour is arguably the most recognisable name in fashion media. In her new biography of Wintour author Amy Odell sets out to paint a nuanced and meticulously researched picture of Wintour's life based on hundreds of interviews and sweeping archival research. This week on The BoF Podcast, Odell joins BoF's Imran Amed to talk about the process of biographing the complicated fashion titan, and provides some insight as to what she learned about Wintour's life and career, as well as what the future holds for Vogue in a post-Anna Wintour era. Key Insights: Even amid a number of industry shifts, including the decline of print media, Wintour has maintained her power in part because of the strong network of people — in fashion and beyond — who value her advice and her ability to bridge the business and creative sides of fashion. Former colleagues and friends have described Wintour as future-focused and hungry; she hasn't stopped working because she enjoys the work. Whoever succeeds Wintour as editor-in-chief will inherit lots of sway that comes with the role. Odell theorises that a Vogue veteran will be tapped next as has always been the case in the past. Additional Resources: What Anna Wintour's Big Promotion Means for Condé Nast: As the publisher focuses on returning to profitability, a new unified content strategy under Anna Wintour, more powerful at the publisher than ever, aims to make its strategy more efficient and intertwined. Org Chart: Vogue's New Global Editorial Structure: The heavyweight international Vogue editors who once filled the front rows at Paris Fashion Week were gone this season, a stark sign of the restructuring that has consolidated power in the hands of global editor Anna Wintour and her regional deputies. That's insane ! Bye bye Host and Producer: @jhansiserani Sound designer: @lalit1121992
T.S. Eliot ends his poem “The Hollow Men” with the line “This is the way the world ends…not with a bang, but a whimper.” Spree criminals are always after the bang. Many see themselves going out in a blaze of glory, taking as many people with them as they can. Going down in history as some kind of dark antihero, shaking up the way we think, making us question our most basic values—leaving a big, smoking crater in the earth on their way out of it. These guys are legends in their own minds. Funnily enough, though, as hard as they try for the big bang, they often end up with the whimper. And there's no better example of that than Peter Braunstein, a former playwright and fashion writer who--after being fired from his job at Women's Wear Daily--embarked on an outrageous crime spree. His ultimate goal? Kill Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. UK PM Boris Johnson has rolled all his ‘quirks' into one speech this week, and copped criticism from colleagues and the business sector. There is questioning of the UK's place in the AUKUS alliance. Richard Ratcliffe's hunger strike has ended, but the case raises big questions about hostage diplomacy. And the UK has joined worldwide criticism of the possible disappearance of Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis star.
The Guardian's diplomatic editor on Boris's bizarre speech and the British role in AUKUS, a close look at Covid restriction protestors, and Australia might not be famous for our mountains but there's lots to appreciate about them.

Happy Wine Wednesday! Award winning journalist Abbey White is back this week to bid a fond farewell to the FX series Pose. We kick things off with our thoughts on the unexpected announcement that the series was coming to an end. We then share our overall impressions of the final season. We loved ALL things Elektra, but did not love some of the pacing issues created by the reduction of episodes.Series co-creator Steven Canals said that in mapping the final season out, the writers looked back to the dreams of the main characters identified in season 1 and essentially set out to make those dreams come true in the final season. With that in mind, we walk through the final chapter in each character's arc and share our thoughts on where they ultimately landed.Next, we discuss our favorite episodes and musical cues. We also share our MVPs of the series. No discussion of Pose would be complete without discussing our thoughts on Pose's chances for long overdue awards season recognition and why the few nominations the show gets seem to all go to Billy Porter. The episode closes with our thoughts on Pose's legacy and the actors who made us thirsty. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @MoreWinePod! Send longer feedback to morewinepod@gmail.com. The February cover of Vogue featuring Vice President-elect Kamala Harris kicked off a controversy involving the most powerful woman in fashion and the soon-to-be most powerful woman in the White House. In a multiday social media maelstrom, a leaked cover photo that Anna Wintour originally described as “joyful,” “casual” and “accessible” was deemed “disrespectful” by Twitter. According to people familiar with the matter on both sides, although there had been no contractual cover approval agreement in place, the cover image was not what the vice president-elect's team had expected. The day after the first photo leaked, a second — more formal — digital exclusive cover was also released.Ms. Wintour said in a follow-up statement to "Sway," “Obviously we have heard and understood the reaction to the print cover and I just want to reiterate that it was absolutely not our intention to, in any way, diminish the importance of the vice president-elect's incredible victory.”In an exclusive interview on this episode of "Sway," Ms. Wintour discusses the magazine cover, diversity concerns at Condé Nast, the future of the fashion industry — and whether Jeff Bezos could be the next Anna Wintour. You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.

Wintour sought refuge between the pages of a book as a child. Though now she is in a healthy and loving household she still suffers from PTSD and finds writing to be therapeutic. She is an advocate for mental health especially for children. She went to Grand Canyon University for psychology but that career path just didn’t feel right for her. It wasn’t until she buckled down and dedicated herself to her novel The Cursed Rose that things really started to fall into place. She found the path she was meant to walk. She has a bubbly and friendly personality but don’t let that fool you. Halloween is her favorite holiday and thrillers, horror, and anything with a surprising dark twist really peak her interest. Two of her favorite authors are Stephen King and Anne Rice. Plus she has an obsession with anything vampires. She was part of the San Antonio Romance Author Association (SARA) where she had amazing mentors that helped shape her into the author she is today. She now lives in Honolulu Hawaii where she dedicates her time between her family, her writing, and helping other authors peruse their dreams. To connect and follow her journey you can find her on Twitter and Instagram. Her book The Cursed Rose hits the shelves and ebooks on December 21st.
Quite a long episode we have for you this week! We deep dive into celebrities and their relationships and breakups - How much privacy can celebrities demand during their breakups if they’ve invited the world into their relationship? How much weight do we put on the actions of young Tiktok stars like Charli D’Amelio who live in the spotlight and have a huge following but are still growing up? Gisele asks the question we’re all wondering about - who will be on the September cover of Vogue? How will Ms. Wintour rise to the occasion of this tumultuous time we’re living in? We discuss Paris Hilton’s revealing new documentary, Drew Barrymore (remember her?)’s dead grandfather, Lori Loughlin’s easy way out, and whether Lady Gaga’s Chromatica album rollout was everything it could’ve been. Finally - a conversation about the lack of accountability in our society through the lens of the latest celebrity stories. From an Ana de Armas Stan account on Twitter calling the actress out for her lack of attention to social issues to the horrible disrespect of Megan Thee Stallion and disgusting displays of toxic masculinity on social media since she confirmed it was Tory Lanez who shot her, these conversations are important and challenging but we'll never stop having them!

An inductee into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, he won 212 of the 529 races he entered across several categories of competition and has been described as "the greatest driver never to win the World Championship". Mr. Moss was known in his sport as “Mr. Motor Racing.” Long after his retirement, he was also considered a British national treasure — a dashing gentleman racer who was chivalrous and always sportsmanlike to his competitors despite the cut and thrust of motor racing. He was knighted by Prince Charles, standing in for the queen, in 2000. Mr. Moss’s sportsmanship was perhaps most evident in 1958, when he could have won the world championship after taking the Portuguese Grand Prix in Porto in his British-made Vanwall racecar. His archrival, Mike Hawthorn, finished second, giving him a key six points, which would have clinched the world title. But Hawthorn, a fellow Englishman, was threatened with disqualification for pushing his stalled Ferrari back onto the track after a spin. His disqualification would have put Mr. Moss in the driver’s seat for the world title. But Mr. Moss told race officials that Hawthorn had pushed his Ferrari only on an off-the-track area and should not be disqualified. His intervention swayed the officials, who awarded Hawthorn second place, eventually enabling him to win the F1 world championship by a single point over Mr. Moss. He passed away from a long illness at the age of 90 in Mayfair, London.12 April 2020 – Tim Brooke Taylor, best known for his work on The Goodies and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue passes away - https://www.etonline.com/tim-brooke-taylor-the-goodies-star-dies-at-79-of-coronavirus-complications-144654Timothy Julian Brooke-Taylor, English comedian and actor. Together they created the Rani, a female Time Lord scientist who was brought to life so vividly by the late Kate O'Mara, as well a creating the companion Mel. The Bakers scripted or contributed to four serials for the programme in the 1980s: The Mark of the Rani, The Trial of a Time Lord, Parts 9–12 and 14 (also known as Terror of the Vervoids and The Ultimate Foe); and Time and the Rani. They have also written novelisations of these stories, as well as a Make Your Own Adventure With Doctor Who (Find Your Fate With Doctor Who in the United States) gamebook titled Race Against Time. She is also known for her role as Laura West in the ITV sitcom The Upper Hand. At 38, she was one of the oldest actresses to play a Bond girl, and was five years older than the star Sean Connery. Albert R. Broccoli said Blackman was cast opposite Sean Connery in the James Bond films based on her success in the British television series The Avengers. He knew that most American audiences would not have seen the programme. Broccoli said, "The Brits would love her because they knew her as Mrs. Gale, the Yanks would like her because she was so good, it was a perfect combination." She died from natural causes at the age of 94 in Lewes, Sussex.13 April 1938 – Grey Owl - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_OwlArchibald Stansfeld Belaney, commonly known as Grey Owl, was a British-born conservationist, fur trapper, and writer who pretended to be a First Nations person. While he achieved fame as a conservationist during his life, after his death the revelation that he was not Indigenous, along with other autobiographical fabrications, negatively affected his reputation. Belaney rose to prominence as a notable author and lecturer, primarily on environmental issues. In working with the National Parks Branch, Grey Owl became the subject of many films, and was established as the "'caretaker of park animals' at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba" in 1931. Together with his numerous articles, books, films and lectures, his views on conservation reached audiences beyond the borders of Canada. His conservation views largely focused on humans' negative impact on nature through their commodification of nature's resources for profits, and a need for humans to develop a respect for the natural world. Recognition of Belaney has included biographies, a historic plaque at his birthplace, and a 1999 biopic about his life by the director Richard Attenborough. He died from pneumonia at the age of 49 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.13 April 1941 – Annie Jump Cannon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Jump_CannonAmerican astronomer whose cataloging work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification. With Edward C. Pickering, she is credited with the creation of the Harvard Classification Scheme, which was the first serious attempt to organize and classify stars based on their temperatures and spectral types. She was nearly deaf throughout her career. She was a suffragist and a member of the National Women's Party. Cannon manually classified more stars in a lifetime than anyone else, with a total of around 350,000 stars. She discovered 300 variable stars, five novas, and one spectroscopic binary, creating a bibliography that included about 200,000 references. She discovered her first star in 1898, though she was not able to confirm it until 1905. When she first started cataloging the stars, she was able to classify 1,000 stars in three years, but by 1913, she was able to work on 200 stars an hour. Cannon could classify three stars a minute just by looking at their spectral patterns and, if using a magnifying glass, could classify stars down to the ninth magnitude, around 16 times fainter than the human eye can see. Her work was also highly accurate. In 1925 she became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate of science from Oxford University. In 1935, she created the Annie J. Cannon Prize for "the woman of any country, whose contributions to the science of astronomy are the most distinguished." She died from congestive heart failure at the age of 77 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.13 April 1944 - Cécile Chaminade - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9cile_ChaminadeFrench composer and pianist. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d'Honneur, a first for a female composer. Ambroise Thomas said, "This is not a woman who composes, but a composer who is a woman." In 1908 she visited the United States, where she was accorded a hearty welcome. Her compositions were tremendous favorites with the American public, and such pieces as the Scarf Dance or the Ballet No. 1 were to be found in the music libraries of many lovers of piano music of the time. She composed a Konzertstück for piano and orchestra, the ballet music to Callirhoé and other orchestral works. Her songs, such as The Silver Ring and Ritournelle, were also great favorites. In London in November 1901, she made gramophone recordings of seven of her compositions for the Gramophone and Typewriter Company; these are among the most sought-after piano recordings by collectors, though they have been reissued on compact disk. Chaminade was relegated to obscurity for the second half of the 20th century, her piano pieces and songs mostly forgotten, with the Flute Concertino in D major, Op. 107, composed for the 1902 Paris Conservatoire Concours, her most popular piece today. Chaminade's music has been described as tuneful, highly accessible and mildly chromatic, and it may be regarded as bearing the typical characteristics of late-Romantic French music. She died at the age of 86 in Monte Carlo.Famous Birthdays13 April 1570 – Guy Fawkes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_FawkesAlso known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Fawkes converted to Catholicism and left for mainland Europe, where he fought for Catholic Spain in the Eighty Years' War against Protestant Dutch reformers in the Low Countries. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England without success. He later met Thomas Wintour, with whom he returned to England. Wintour introduced him to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters leased an undercroft beneath the House of Lords; Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder which they stockpiled there. The authorities were prompted by an anonymous letter to search Westminster Palace during the early hours of 5 November, and they found Fawkes guarding the explosives. He was questioned and tortured over the next few days and confessed to wanting to blow up the House of Lords. He became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in the UK as Guy Fawkes Night since 5 November 1605, when his effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by fireworks. He was born in Stonegate, York.13 April 1892 - Robert Watson-Watt - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Watson-WattSir Robert Alexander Watson-Watt, Scottish pioneer of radio direction finding and radar technology. Watt began his career in radio physics with a job at the Met Office, where he began looking for accurate ways to track thunderstorms using the radio signals given off by lightning. This led to the 1920s development of a system later known as huff-duff. Huff-duff allowed operators to determine the location of an enemy radio in seconds and it became a major part of the network of systems that helped defeat the U-boat threat. It is estimated that huff-duff was used in about a quarter of all attacks on U-boats. In 1935 Watt was asked to comment on reports of a German death ray based on radio. Watt and his assistant Arnold Frederic Wilkins quickly determined it was not possible, but Wilkins suggested using radio signals to locate aircraft at long distances. This led to a February 1935 demonstration where signals from a BBC short-wave transmitter were bounced off a Handley Page Heyford aircraft. Watt led the development of a practical version of this device, which entered service in 1938 under the code name Chain Home. Watson-Watt justified his choice of a non-optimal frequency for his radar, with his often-quoted “cult of the imperfect,” which he stated as “Give them the third-best to go on with; the second-best comes too late, [and] the best never comes.” He was born in Brechin,Angus.13 April 1899 - Alfred Mosher Butts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Mosher_ButtsAmerican architect, famous for inventing the board gameScrabble in 1938. In the early 1930s after working as an architect but now unemployed, Butts set out to design a board game. He studied existing games and found that games fell into three categories: number games such as dice and bingo; move games such as chess and checkers; and word games such as anagrams. Butts decided to create a game that utilized both chance and skill by combining elements of anagrams and crossword puzzles, a popular pastime of the 1920s. Players would draw seven lettered tiles from a pool and then attempt to form words from their seven letters. A key to the game was Butts' analysis of the English language. Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to calculate how frequently each letter of the alphabet was used. He then used each letter's frequency to determine how many of each letter he would include in the game. He included only four "S" tiles so that the ability to make words plural would not make the game too easy. Butts initially called the game "Lexiko", but later changed the name to "Criss Cross Words", after considering "It", and began to look for a buyer. The game makers he originally contacted rejected the idea, but Butts was tenacious. Eventually, he sold the rights to entrepreneur and game-lover James Brunot, who made a few minor adjustments to the design and renamed the game "Scrabble." To memorialize Butts's importance to the invention of the game, there is a street sign at 35th Avenue and 81st Street in Jackson Heights that is stylized using letters, with their values in Scrabble as a subscript. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York.Events of Interest13 April 1953 – Project MKUltra begins - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKUltraProject MKUltra (or MK-Ultra), also called the CIA mind control program, is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects that were designed and undertaken by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, some of which were illegal. Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations in order to weaken the individual and force confessions through mind control. The project's intentionally obscure CIA cryptonym is made up of the digraph MK, meaning that the project was sponsored by the agency's Technical Services Staff, followed by the word Ultra which had previously been used to designate the most secret classification of World War II intelligence. Other related cryptonyms include Project MKNAOMI and Project MKDELTA. The project was organized through the Office of Scientific Intelligence of the CIA and coordinated with the United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. Code names for drug-related experiments were Project Bluebird and Project Artichoke. The program engaged in many illegal activities, including the use of U.S. and Canadian citizens as its unwitting test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy. MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate its subjects' mental states and brain functions. Techniques included the covert administration of high doses ofpsychoactive drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, electroshocks, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as other forms of torture. In December 2018, declassified documents included a letter to an unidentified doctor discussing work on six dogs made to run, turn and stop via remote control and brain implants.13 April 1970 - Apollo 13 oxygen tank explodes - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/apollo-13-oxygen-tank-explodesOn April 13, 1970, disaster strikes 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blows up on Apollo 13, the third manned lunar landing mission. Astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise had left Earth two days before for the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon but were forced to turn their attention to simply making it home alive. Mission commander Lovell reported to mission control on Earth: “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” and it was discovered that the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water had been disrupted. The landing mission was aborted, and the astronauts and controllers on Earth scrambled to come up with emergency procedures. The crippled spacecraft continued to the moon, circled it, and began a long, cold journey back to Earth. The astronauts and mission control were faced with enormous logistical problems in stabilizing the spacecraft and its air supply and providing enough energy to the damaged fuel cells to allow successful reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Navigation was another problem, and Apollo 13‘s course was repeatedly corrected with dramatic and untested maneuvers. On April 17, with the world anxiously watching, tragedy turned to triumph as the Apollo 13 astronauts touched down safely in the Pacific Ocean.13 April 2017 - The US drops the largest ever non-nuclear weapon on Nangarhar Province,Afghanistan.- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-43/B_MOAB- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Nangarhar_airstrikeThe GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (commonly known as "Mother of All Bombs") is a large-yield bomb, developed for the United States military by Albert L. Weimorts, Jr. of the Air Force Research Laboratory. At the time of development, it was said to be the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the American arsenal. The basic principle resembles that of the BLU-82 Daisy Cutter, which was used to clear heavily wooded areas in the Vietnam War. Pentagon officials suggested MOAB might be used as an anti-personnel weapon, as part of the "shock and awe" strategy integral to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The MOAB is not a penetrator weapon and is primarily intended for soft to medium surface targets covering extended areas and targets in a contained environment such as a deep canyon or within a cave system. The MOAB was first dropped in combat in the 13 April 2017 airstrike against an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIS) tunnel complex in Achin District, Afghanistan. Casualty figures were initially reported as 36 but increased over the following days as reconnaissance units investigated the site. On 18 April 2017, one senior Afghan security official said the bomb killed 96 Islamic State militants, among them 13 major commanders. Stars and Stripes reported that General Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry said that since the strike, the offensive operation in the area was resumed. An Afghan officer also said that trees 100 metres from the impact point had remained standing.Follow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Anna Wintour says Vogue magazine is the world's greatest influencer, though the numbers don't agree. A job at Condé Nast used to mean a magazine journalist had arrived. but in the wake of S.I. Newhouse's death, it's hard to imagine who might have the passion to save his magazines. For New York Magazine, journalist Reeves Wiedeman profiled Condé Nast, Wintour, and new CEO, Roger Lynch. This week, CJR's Editor and Publisher Kyle Pope sits down with Wiedeman to discuss Condé Nast's new strategy, and whether its newsstand presence could become disposable.

Samantha Barry is Editor in Chief of Glamour where she is responsible for setting the voice and mission of the publication. As a young woman in Ireland, Sam once dreamed of being a war correspondent. Her early work in journalism took her all over the world, including stints in Nigeria, Burma, Pakistan, Iraq, Papua New Guinea, Burma, and many other turbulent locations where she worked for the BBC, Intermedia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Lucky for us here in the States, she came to America in 2014 to head up social media for CNN. Last year she began her stint at Glamour after being recruited by the legendary Anna Wintour, longtime Editor in Chief of Vogue. Ms. Wintour calls Sam, “fearless … the perfect editor for a new, more ambitious era of Glamour’s future. The name Anna Wintour immediately calls to mind an image of a woman at once both cool and cold, her face framed by an perfect bob haircut, her eyes inscrutable, hidden behind oversized sunglasses. You imagine the mind behind those glasses — the mind behind VOGUE, the woman whose hard-charging leadership style was the basis for Meryl Streep’s titular character in “The Devil Wears Prada.” But if you’re able to escape the gravitational pull of that image, you’ll find something else: A model of how women can lead, and a cautionary tale of the double-standards they face once they do. “They’re caricatures, they’re stereotypes,” said Amy Astley in an interview for POLITICO’s Women Rule podcast. “This is a businessperson successfully running a business. It’s not easy. And some of those things that were heaped upon her, you don’t see it heaped upon men as much.” Astley is the editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest and a longtime Wintour protege who has led AD through something of a renaissance — dramatically expanding its digital business, launching new products and rejuvenating the century-old magazine’s brand. Working in the world of style and fashion journalism, Astley sees her role as reflecting on the culture and illuminating why certain things are important to society. And that makes politics an unavoidable topic — even if you’re not intentionally being political. “I had Ricky Martin on the cover [of AD] with his husband and his two kids … in their house in LA. They were barefoot, casual. I didn’t really give it two thoughts because to me, they’re just a fabulous couple — beautiful family, great house,” said Astley. “I had a lot of letters thanking me for just presenting them as a gay couple without putting any politics around it or pointing it out in any way, and it didn’t really occur to me that we would single them out in any way; to me, they were a family. That’s political.” She came to the job after 13 years as Teen Vogue’s founding editor-in-chief — a position she was hand-picked for after a decade spent at its parent publication, Vogue. Astley credits her success at the top of the publishing world to the lessons she learned from Wintour’s example. “Anna is not only the hardcore businesswoman, but she is a person who works all the time … and I have tried to bring that to all my jobs,” said Astley. “You see that she’s in it with you working really, really hard. We all know of bosses who, like, don’t really come to work. And it’s not a positive.” “I really learned watching her be relentless: Keep trying things; do new things. Don’t worry if people say negative things about you. If something fails, carry on,” said Astley. For Astley, one of those “new things” was launching Teen Vogue in 2003 with a decidedly different perspective than other publications aimed at girls and young women. “My thinking was feminist, to be honest. I wanted the magazine to be about the life and the well-being of the young woman,” said Astley. “It wasn’t about how to kiss or … silly quizzes or how to dress to attract boys. I didn’t want any of that. I didn’t want it to be about how you are in relation to men; how you attract them, how you make them happy, how you please them. [That’s] so dated, but that is still what teen magazines were largely doing at that point. Young women responded, and the magazine quickly became one of the most-circulated in the publishing world and blazed a path for the rush of woman-positive media that followed — which Astley credits to the generation of people who followed her and “were able to deepen and continue that work.” In that way, Astley herself became a model for young women pursuing leadership, much as Wintour was for her. “I know what my staff thinks about me and they know what I think about them. I think they’re the best, and I support them and I feel that comes back to me, and that’s why I’ve had a good career and have been able to make good products,” said Astley. “My team that I built, they know that I’m working hand-in-hand with them, and they know that I respect them and care about them. … It’s that simple. Respect, it all comes to respect.”

Sometimes the best stories come up in the middle of a documentary. This movie managed to find that story - and then completely ignore it.Our documentary this week is supposedly about Anna Wintour's day-to-day life as editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. Instead, it's a basic-cable reality episode whose most important and compelling character isn't Wintour at all. Which begs the question: why was this documentary even made? Macintosh and Maud try to answer that question and so many more in a heated discussion about 2009's The September Issue. Then, we talk about what might be the best documentary made this year, and that's only two weeks after a beautiful examination of Fred Rogers' life. Three Identical Strangers is an amazing, jaw-dropping movie with constant layers to unpack. The Vogue September issue runs roughly 800 pages, but there’s always a behind-the-scenes story or two that are left untold. Enter Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour and Vogue Fashion Director Tonne Goodman. This week, Wintour and Goodman discuss the making of the magazine and this month’s cover girl, Kendall Jenner. “In a way, her chameleon-like abilities remind me of the great Linda Evangelista in that she can take on all of these different characters,” Wintour says of Jenner. “And that’s really what Tonne Goodman so successfully achieved in this shoot with Mert [Alas] and Marcus [Piggott] in September.” Jenner’s breakout beauty look didn’t hurt either. “She said, ‘You know, I would love to change something—I’d love to cut my hair,’” Goodman recalls of the spontaneous on-set chop, which came courtesy of editorial whiz Garren. Of course, Jenner is already the face that launched a billion likes, but as Goodman reveals, her mother, Kris, was somewhat wary of her similarly fresh makeup look. “She raised an... Just days after Anna Wintour swapped lives with Amy Schumer for the Vogue original short in honor of the July issue, our Editor in Chief seemed to be taking cues from the cover girl who, in Wintour’s words, tells it like it is. “It was Amy who came up with the idea,” says Wintour during the latest installment of the Vogue podcast. “She talked to me about how she gets up kind of late, then walks around the New York streets thinking about her skits, and then maybe she has a scone, then she goes to the Comedy Cellar and performs—I’m sure brilliantly—and then, to be honest, she then said she goes home and has sex with her boyfriend. So I agreed to do all of that except the last part.” Echoing a similar chord is Vogue Fashion Director Tonne Goodman who reveals that the theme of the photoshoot, too, was a day in the life of Amy Schumer, according to Vogue. “She normally would not be in an extravagant, down-feather, quilted Alexander McQueen something,” says Goodman of the look Schumer is seen donning...
