Gender shapes how we move through the world, but the expectations attached to it can be limiting and exclusionary, most especially for trans and gender non-conforming people.Comedian, writer, and singer Tranna Wintour meditates on her experience as a trans woman and argues that it is not trans people who complicate our understanding of gender but the narrow binary that limits who we are allowed to be.Wintour spoke at The Walrus Talks Disruption in Toronto on November 6, 2018.To register for upcoming events happening online or in a city near you, and to catch up on our archive of The Walrus Talks, visit thewalrus.ca/events.And subscribe to The Walrus Events newsletter for updates and announcements, at thewalrus.ca/newsletters.

The Devil Wears Prada has become iconic. Anne Hathaway's cerulean sweater. Meryl Streep's silver hair and clipped “that's all” dismissal. The pop songs, the score, the fashion world excess. Just hearing the title instantly conjures images from the film for millions of people. And while it's common knowledge that Streep's Miranda Priestly was inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, fewer people realize the story began as a novel: a lightly fictionalized account written by Wintour's former assistant, Lauren Weisberger. Now, with a movie sequel hitting theaters, Arnie looks back at Weisberger's original 2003 novel and its follow-ups, Revenge Wears Prada and When Life Gives You Lululemons. Join him as he dives into the world of chick lit and reveals just how dramatic a makeover the original book received on its way to becoming a Hollywood phenomenon.

Gird your loins, folks! We've accepted the low-paying position of assistant to Miranda Priestly, the legendary editor-in-chief at Runway Magazine, the fashion crown jewel of the Elias Clarke publishing empire. A million other people would kill to have this job, but it's sure to open up big doors for us in the future. Ms. Priestly's a little demanding, and doesn't like us to ask questions, and doesn't like when we don't understand things, and calls us fat, but all things require a learning curve. On an unrelated note: The podcast is covering The Devil Wears Prada (2006), the millennial classic about a hard-working striver who doesn't think she can please her boss, before wouldn't you know it, she pleases her damn boss? It might end up being the role Meryl Streep will be best remembered for, and she's truly electric in this movie. But Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are also incredible! And Anne Hathaway's doing her thing. Now, about that: During the history segment, we really try to unpack why people don't like Anne Hathaway. Including one of the people who hosts this podcast. Also in the history segment: The life and times of Vogue editor Anna Wintour; Lauren Weisberger working for Wintour and then writing a thinly veiled novel about it; how that novel was adapted into a movie; and how playing Priestly catapulted Meryl Streep into being a box office sensation for the first time in her career. Anna Wintour graces the cover of Vogue's May issue alongside her theatrical double: Meryl Streep in the role of Miranda Priestly, from “The Devil Wears Prada,” whose much-anticipated sequel comes out on May 1st. Wintour and David Remnick spoke last fall on the day that a sea change took place at Vogue: it was announced that Chloe Malle would take over the editorial direction of the American edition of the publication. They discussed her storied career; her decision to wear Prada to the premiére of “The Devil Wears Prada”; and how Remnick might up his fashion game: “Forgive me, David, but how boring would it be if everybody was just wearing a dark suit and a white shirt all the time?” This segment originally aired on September 5, 2025.   New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. It's always such a joy when I can bring on a friend I know IRL who lives in my home state, so it is with great pleasure that I scheduled a Zoom hang with the critically acclaimed, wondrously creative, and darkly comedic journalist-turned-author Amina Akhtar. More of a breezy, nostalgic chat about life, Gen X, print journalism, and the '90s, than a traditional episode devoted to the movies, with the release of Devil Wears Prada 2 right around the corner, it was the perfect time to talk to Amina about the twenty years she spent working in the fashion magazine industry. Accidentally stumbling into a full time position at Vogue after a month working as a fact checker, Amina was the assistant to Anna Wintour's second in command, and worked along with Lauren Weisberger, who no one in her office realized was secretly writing and getting ready to publish the thinly veiled satire of her work life with Wintour at Vogue in The Devil Wears Prada. Light-hearted, funny, and eye-opening, Amina shares her insights and memories, and we discuss how the film, starring Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Meryl Streep, reflected and differed from the real thing.Bio: Amina Akhtar is a novelist and former fashion editor. Her satirical first novel, #FashionVictim, drew critical acclaim. Kismet, her second book, was set in the stunning and creepy world of wellness. Almost Surely Dead, Akhtar's third novel, was published by Mindy Kaling's imprint. Akhtar is currently working on her fourth novel.Akhtar has worked at Vogue, Elle, the New York Times, and New York Magazine, where she was the founding editor of the women's blog The Cut. She lives not too far from Sedona, Arizona.Originally Posted (3/29/26) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154266082Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi & PayPalTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Guy Fawkes (/fɔːks/; 13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606),[a] also known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. He was born and educated in York; his father died when Fawkes was eight years old, after which his mother married a recusant Catholic. Fawkes converted to Catholicism and left for mainland Europe, where he fought for Catholic Spain in the Eighty Years' War against Protestant Dutch reformers in the Low Countries. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England without success. He later met Thomas Wintour, with whom he returned to England. Wintour introduced him to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters leased an undercroft beneath the House of Lords; Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder that they stockpiled there. The authorities were prompted by an anonymous letter to search Westminster Palace during the early hours of 5 November, and they found Fawkes guarding the explosives. He was questioned and tortured over the next few days and confessed to wanting to blow up the House of Lords.

Trump's and Bernie's Jet Quagmire, Met Gala Gaucheness, & Baseball DreamsWelcome to episode forty-four of David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. In this episode, David and Stu cover the following:1) A discussion of some notable achievements of two loathsome individuals, Robert F. Kennedy's attempt to eliminate dyes from our food and tackle the obesity epidemic and Trump's deal-making that may benefit the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, Trump undermines the little positive achievements of his Presidency by accepting a lavish plane from Qatar to replace Air Force One as a gift, further highlighting his lack of ethics.2) Bernie Sanders has been crisscrossing the country campaigning against Oligarchs with AOC flying in a private jet, which exposes what a fraudulent hypocrite he is as he spews carbon emissions into the atmosphere while pontificating his antiquated socialist views.3) The 2025 Met Gala was a gauche and garish spectacle of bad taste organized by the loathsome Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, who has promoted elitism, racism, and eating disorders. The entire event is a disgrace, and Ms. Wintour deserves a long overdue cancellation.4) A story of a baseball underdog, JC Escarra, who made it onto the Yankees at age 30 through persistence and grit. This uplifting story is at least one example of some positivity in a very dark period of American history. We welcome comments on our podcasts, which can be left on our website or any other platform you may be tuning in on.Connect with David & Stu:Email David & Stu: davidandstuunhinged@gmail.com and share your comments, concerns, and questions. We encourage all to visit our website (https://www.rageworksnetwork.com/show/david-stu-unhinged/) and please leave comments for our consideration.

Speculation, analysis, and commentary circulated all summer, after the announcement, in June, that Anna Wintour would step back from her role as the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. This changing of the guard is uniquely fraught, because Wintour's name has become nearly inextricable from the magazine, to a degree almost unknown today. And, as New York Fashion Week was set to begin, Wintour spoke with David Remnick about choosing her successor, the Vogue.com editor Chloe Malle. “It felt like this was the right time,” she says. With an unusual number of new creative directors in positions at major fashion houses, “It seemed like a good moment to bring in someone with a different perspective and a different generation who could look at things in a new way.” Wintour was appointed editor-in-chief in 1988, and generations of designers have come up under her famously acute and decisive judgments. She comes from a publishing family; her brother is a well-known journalist, and her father was the editor of the London Evening Standard. She credits him with steering her into a career in fashion, even suggesting that the teen-age Anna write down “editor of Vogue” as her career aspiration on a school form. “Working my first jobs in London, there [was] no money, there's no staff, there's no teams, so that you have to learn how to do everything,” Wintour says. “So, when I came to the States and there was a shoe editor and an underwear editor and a fabric editor, it was all so siloed. I felt very confident because I sort of knew how to do everything.” Wintour is also known for bringing politics to Vogue; she's a noted Democratic supporter and donor. “I've been impressed by Governor Newsom, I think he's certainly making a stand, and obviously I'm sure there'll be many other candidates that will emerge, hopefully soon.” But, in this political environment, Remnick asks, “How do you make a case that fashion is important?” Fashion, she replies, “is always important. It's a question of self-expression and a statement about yourself. . . . And, forgive me, David, but how boring would it be if everybody was just wearing a dark suit and a white shirt all the time?”New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. It's a question of self-expression and a statement about yourself. . . . And, forgive me, David, but how boring would it be if everybody was just wearing a dark suit and a white shirt all the time?”

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:30 Thanks for understand as we took time off! I watched Andor and The Resident. Chandra watched The Better Sister, Ludwig, Patience and Echo Valley. She recommends them all except for Echo Valley. We both love Murderbot. We talk about Anna Wintour's announcement that she's stepping down as editor for American Vogue. Chandra thinks Edward Enninful might have something to do with it. Wintour was in Venice for the Bezos Sanchez wedding. We know Sanchez's dress is going to be trashy. Royals: Minutes (8:30) to 29:45 We found Meghan's Confessions of a Female Founder podcast informative and inspirational. We wish we could get more AsEver raspberry spread. Chandra ordered two jars of apricot spread and I only ordered one. Some people have already received their AsEver orders. AsEver is releasing a rose wine on July first. That's Diana's birthday and a special anniversary for Harry and Meghan. Meghan has been steadily posting to social media. She's making the most headlines for a video from when she was pregnant and dancing in the hospital. It was funny and cute and the tabloids had a fit. Two reality stars at a King's Trust event recreated that dance on a staircase at the palace. You're not supposed to take personal photos or videos at royal receptions, but both the King's Trust and official Royal Family accounts commented positively on that post. We think it was a setup meant to mock Harry and Meghan but it just makes the Windsors look obsessed as usual. I play a clip from the Aspire podcast where Meghan explained why she posted that video. Camilla Tominey called it a “sexy slut drop,” which is ridiculous. This week we heard that Prince George will be going to his father and uncle's boarding school, Eton, in the fall of 2026. I looked through our archives and there are stories as far back as January, 2019 about Kate pushing for her three children to attend her alma mater, Marlborough. We assume she was forced to give in about George's school, but Louis and Charlotte are likely to go to Marlborough. Last weekend were the Royal Ascot horse races, probably the biggest social event of the year. Kate pulled out at the last minute. It was a big deal judging by the coverage. Palace staff were said to be “bewildered and worried” and a source told the Daily Beast that Kate was tired after Trooping the Colour and Garter Day and that she has good and bad days. We got several negative stories about Kate after that, mostly about how she disrespected the King, but also just rehashing older negative stories about her. There were stories hinting that she didn't feel well, which they should have focused on. Kate is reportedly planning to go to Wimbledon, which is from June 30th to July 13th. She usually goes at the end, but in 2023 she went early to sit with Roger Federer. Hello Magazine has a cover story about Kate with the title “On her own terms.” I put it on Instagram and the aspect ratio makes it say “On her own.” Chandra had two tweets about Kate which went viral this week. It feels like the palace and press are turning on Kate. She might be quite sick, but they play fast and loose with the truth and the royals minimize illness, so it's hard to tell. Chandra remembers how Princess Anne's traumatic brain injury was swept under the rug and how she returned to work with bruises. Harry and William are covering US Magazine, and the article is about how William is mad Harry isn't his scapegoat anymore. It's part of William's embiggening campaign as he tells us about his plans to be king, and it sounds like he can't wait for his father to die. The press freaked out about Harry saying he didn't know how much longer Charles has, but had only a mild response to William. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:45 to end Kaiser's comment of the week is from Lover on the post about Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson kissing on red carpets. My comment of the week is from Henny Penny on the post about Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos's tacky wedding. Thanks for listening bitches!

The job was editor-in-chief. The goal was to become the platform. And she did.  Once she made it to the top, she didn't just edit Vogue. She reinvented the power structures beneath it. This episode unpacks how a British girl who couldn't type built the most bulletproof career in media, survived five decades of disruption, and made herself indispensable to fashion, politics, and culture.   You'll hear how she weaponized speed over perfection, fired half the Vogue staff in three days, and turned a porn-funded job into a fashion laboratory. Why she said “Your job” when asked what she wanted. Why she put Madonna on the cover at the peak of a scandal. Why standards—not popularity—are her real moat. It's not about fashion. It's about building systems no one can take from you.   Most people aim for realistic. Anna Wintour named her destination—Editor of Vogue—at sixteen, then built a ladder no one else could climb.  This episode is for informational purposes only and is based on Amy Odell's Anna: The Biography. SMILING THROUGH THE APOCALYPSE—In the past few weeks, Will Welch has taken a bit of flack for letting Beyoncé promote her new whiskey label on the cover of GQ's October issue, with an interview that one X user described as “an intimate email exchange between GQ and several layers of Beyonce's comms team.”Whether that kind of thing rankles you or not—and yes, we asked him about it—in the five years since Welch took over, GQ seems to be doing as well or better than everybody else in the industry. Why? Ask around. He's got a direct line to celebrities, who consider him a personal friend. He's got real credibility with The Fashion People. And because of both of these things, advertisers love him.Perhaps most importantly, his boss Anna Wintour loves him. The Atlanta-born Welch started his career at the alternative music and culture mag the Fader in the early aughts, and jumped to GQ in 2007. For a decade under EIC Jim Nelson, he operated as the magazine's fashion-and-culture svengali, eventually becoming the creative director of the magazine and the editor of the brand's fashion spinoff, GQ Style. In 2019, Wintour tapped him for the big job: Editor-in-Chief of GQ—a title that in 2020 was recast in the current Condé Nast survival-mode as Global Editorial Director of GQ, overseeing 19 editions around the world. After speaking with Welch only a few hours after the Beyonce cover dropped, we get what all the fuss is about. He is a great sport with good hair and just enough of a Southern accent who is confident-yet-never-cocky about his mission at GQ.Let other people bemoan the “death of print.” Will Welch is having a blast at the Last Supper. —This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press. Hey pals. In January, Condé Nast shocked the entire independent music world when it announced it was laying off most of Pitchfork's staff and folding what remained into GQ. Emilie especially felt this one — Pitchfork was her first media job, working as an editor for their underground music sister-site Altered Zones, which made it particularly strange to hear that the publication was merging with a website for men who can pronounce “visvim.” Whatever you thought about Pitchfork during its three-decade run as a standalone music publication, the image of Anna Wintour wearing sunglasses as she informed the staff about the site's fate pointed to a previously unthinkable reality: If the biggest music publication in the English-speaking world couldn't survive the media bloodbath that is rapidly unfolding all around us, would we soon be living in a world with no music journalism at all? There is no way of knowing exactly how Condé arrived at this decision. Wintour wrote a note to staff saying that “this decision was made after a careful evaluation of Pitchfork's performance and what we believe is the best path forward for the brand so that our coverage of music can continue to thrive within the company” — which doesn't tell us much. Others have accused Condé of doing layoffs as a form of union busting. And it is also safe to say that Pitchfork, like so many digital media publications, was wrestling with many of the larger structural forces we often talk about on this show (see: Google and other distribution platforms deprioritizing news, streaming services' monopoly on music discovery, and declining programmatic advertising revenues).Needless to say, there are a lot of takes floating around. But one in particular — by writer, editor, music scholar, and philosopher Robin James, on her always-intriguing It's Her Factory blog — really caught our eye, especially for the head-on way in which it dealt with the dissonance of Pitchfork being folded into a men's publication. In a post titled “Pitchfork, ‘Bro-ified' Alt Rock Radio, and the Structural Issues in the Financialized Media Industry” Robin frames the move as just one in a long line of examples of corporations turning to male audiences in order to “save” distressed music media properties. Which isn't because men are actually more likely to care about music or music writing, but because it's a logic that plays into the gendered biases of the executive and ownership class. And because in today's heavily financialized economy, business leaders are more concerned with creating the perception of future growth than coming up with solutions that actually work. Robin joins us to talk about what the Pitchfork news can tell us about the persistence of gendered stereotypes around music fandom and consumption, and how media's current woes are a reflection of a larger business landscape where exponential scalability takes precedence over sustainability and even profitability. We also discuss how the financialization of everything has changed the nature of musical fame, and how the age-old poptimism/rockism binary may be increasingly obsolete as a framework for discussing power differentials in music.Support our independent journalism by becoming a paid subscriber at theculturejournalist.substack.com. Yet his list of accomplishments was almost as long as his list of controversies. He said he was “fed up” with the #MeToo movement and questioned the claims of victims who came forward during that time. “What shocks me most in all of this are the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened,” Lagerfeld told Numero Magazine. “Not to mention the fact there are no prosecution witnesses.”“One cannot – even if there are decades between them – kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,” Lagerfeld, who was German, said in 2017. He had apparently taken issue with then German chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow Syrian refugees into Germany at the time. “I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust,'” he added. As Rachel Tashjian notes in the Washington Post, Wintour has gone out of her way to champion designers who have been embroiled in the worst of scandals. That list includes John Galliano, Balenciaga designer Demna and Alexander Wang, who was accused in late 2020 of drugging and sexually assaulting several victims. Wang has denied the allegations made against him. Wintour dutifully sat in the front row of his comeback show. Some thoughts: https://fashionmagazine.com/style/celebrity-style/karl-lagerfeld-controversy-met-gala-2023/MET GALAhttps://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-scoops/met-gala-history-how-it-turned-from-fundraiser-to-fashions-biggest-night-1235167840/Bodies, Bodies, Bodieshttps://www.cnn.com/2023/05/02/us/henryetta-oklahoma-seven-bodies-found-tuesday/index.htmlNazis in Columbus, Ohiohttps://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/neo-nazi-group-protests-columbus-223840382.htmlCongress Pay Scamhttps://nypost.com/2023/04/30/congress-unconstitutional-pay-scam-gets-members-34k-raises/Lois Frankelhttps://www.newsweek.com/democrat-sold-first-republic-stock-bought-jp-morgan-before-collapse-1797676Trans RunnerRIGHThttps://www.foxnews.com/sports/transgender-female-runner-beat-14000-women-london-marathon-offers-give-medal-backLEFThttps://www.advocate.com/media/transgender-woman-runner-london-marathonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Editors Take a MasterClass: Anna Wintour Edition

The editorial team of Current Affairs is fascinated by the online learning platform MasterClass, on which A-list celebrities offer “classes” that are sometimes very cool but frequently of dubious educational value. We have previously taken and discussed the MasterClasses of Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. (We have not yet mustered the fortitude to sit through the Leadership Lessons From George W. Bush MasterClass.) Today we take and discuss the class offered by longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who offers an introduction to the fashion world and lessons on "How To Be A Boss." We talk about the economic structure of the fashion industry, how fashion is made into something exclusive rather than universal, and the mountain of cruelty (to both people and animals) that sustain this bizarre self-contained world. We are particularly interested in the inner workings of Vogue because it's a such an entirely different part of the magazine industry to the world of Current Affairs. So enjoy as Yasmin, Lily, and Nathan discuss how you, too, can become a famous fashion mogul.Read “The Socialist Case for Fashion” in Current Affairs here. The documentary about Wintour and Vogue, The September Issue, can be watched here. The “cerulean” scene of The Devil Wears Prada is here.
