A Note for Jacob: Since my second podcast recording with Matt, I am pleased to report that General Admission Seating for the May 5 event is SOLD OUT!! It is a pleasure to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances. Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience. Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer. On May 5, 2025, a group of Broadway all-stars will join Matt and Christine for this event. Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose, Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Tony-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Jenn Colella, Caroline Bowman, Kara Lindsay, Krysta Rodriguez, Omar Jose Cardona, Rachel Potter, and Stark Sands are expected to perform. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis previewed the 2025 Janice Jam, revealed this year's music director, and explained how you can support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. "Seeking Warmth," an art exhibit curated by artist Sharon Svec, held at Art At The Cave in Vancouver, WA running March 4-29, 2025, aims to explore humanity's need for emotional and physical warmth, especially during times of extreme circumstances such as those caused by genocide, war, oppression and neglect. Ceija Stojka (1933-2013) was a child survivor of the Romani Holocaust (Samudaripen) who began sharing her experiences in written and painted format in 1988 at age 55. She is recognized as a bold activist of Roma, who continue to face persecution today. Sam Marroquin works in collage and paint to expose current and historical trauma within society, emphasizing systems that mask the atrocities against humanity. From 1955 until 1962, the world's largest statue of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin loomed over Prague. The 17,000-ton monster dominated the skyline. When sculptor, Svec Polesny, applied to build the monument, he never expected to win the opportunity and spend the next five years of his life building it. During construction, the size of the project overwhelmed him. He fell into depression, became an alcoholic, and had an affair on his wife, which resulted in her committing suicide. As the monument neared completion in the spring of 1955, the project took so much out of him that Svec took his life. In the same way, Absalom was consumed with building a monument for himself. He wanted to leave a lasting legacy no one would forget. Like Svec, his attempt to build an unforgettable monument led to the end of his life. Join us as we study the story of Absalom, a man obsessed with being remembered.

We know so little about honeybees, but the way they move and form colonies are very telling indeed. When Henry Svec and his wife Mary converted their 50-acre farm into a honeybee sanctuary, he learned a lot not only about taking care of them but also about preserving nature. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, the Founder of Wildflower Bee Farm and Author of “What Grandpa Learned from His Honeybees” shares how the hive-building behavior of honeybees opened his eyes to nature's interconnectedness and why it should be allowed to heal by itself. Henry also discusses some myths regarding bees and honey, maximizing the effect of beneficial bacteria, the advantages of land banking, and the benefits of infrared light to honeybee farms.About Guest:Henry Svec is the Founder of Wildflower Bee Farm and Author of “What Grandpa Learned from His Honeybees.” In late 2019, he and his wife Mary converted their 50-acre cash crop farm in Southwestern Ontario into a bee sanctuary, where they have been chronicling their daily work through weekly videos since January 2020. Chris Svec joined us to talk about kids programming and how well the Joel Test has held up. Svec's son (“The Kid”) developed an interest in programming by playing games. Most of his programming desires are around building games of his own. Any time we talk about kids and programming, Scratch comes up. It really is that neat and is The Kid approved. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.20.513056v1?rss=1 Authors: Brennan, M., Svec, A., Farhadi, A., Maxwell, B., Carney, L. H. Abstract: Forward masking is generally greater for Gaussian noise (GN) than for low-fluctuation noise (LFN) maskers for listeners with and without sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Because older age and SNHL may affect recovery from masker envelope fluctuations differently, the current study explored which of these two factors contributed more substantially to the persistence of GN disruption. GN disruption was measured using three masker-signal delays (25, 75, and 150 ms) for three adult participant groups: younger listeners with normal hearing (YNH), older participants with normal, or near-normal, hearing (ONH), and older participants with sensorineural hearing loss (OSNHL). The role of underlying mechanisms was tested using a computational model for midbrain neurons. The primary result suggests that older listeners with normal or near normal hearing may be more susceptible to the deleterious effects of masker-envelope fluctuations than younger listeners with normal hearing. Results from the computational model propose that there may be a larger influence of efferent feedback and saturation of inner hair cells on GN disruption than previously expected. Henry Adam Svec is an author, musician and an assistant professor of communication arts at the University of Waterloo. He's produced two extraordinary albums (http://www.folksingularity.com/download.html). His album The CFL Sessions (http://www.thecflsessions.ca/songs.html) is perhaps most relevant to this conversation. This album, along with a series of live shows that Svec did to support it, forms the basis of his new novel, Life is Like Canadian Football and Other Authentic Folk Songs (https://invisiblepublishing.com/product/life-is-like-canadian-football/). The book, in fact, builds out from the stage banter that brought The CFL Sessions to life as a performance. I related most to the ways that Svec's book can both blithely shrug off and bitterly contest the normative constraints of academia. As it stands, Svec doesn't feel as though his most recent writing should be required to present a unified theory of authenticity, it's main object of analysis. It's enough for the book to simply “offer ideas” about it. In this sense, I think Svec's work in many ways models how we can inject more joy, satire and self-reflexivity into scholarly writing. (Just a quick note: you might notice that there are some keyboard and mouse noises [clicking and scrolling, not squeaking] throughout the episode. My apologies if this is distracting!)
Jason sells the farm but steals the draft. RJ finally gets Rapunzel and Svec strikes a deal with reigning champ. But not to bury the lede: PIPELINE FANTASY POD IS BACK AND FOOTBALL SEASON IS LIKE A MORPHED MUSHROOM: IT'S AMUNGUS (a fungus? I tried)
For this episode I interview Henry Adam Svec, author of "Life is Like Canadian Football and Other Authentic Folk Songs". Today we talk about this newly released novel, and the chronicle of this fantastical folk-song-collecting story that Henry has been regaling us with all these years, as it moved through the "CFL Sessions", "Folk Songs of Canada Now" and "LIVINGSTON™". We also talk about the blurry lines that can exist between truths and fiction with writing, that these truths are bent and skewed through our filters as the audience, and how perhaps we are partially culpable when we believe we've been led astray by a story. You can find Henry's book at invisiblepublishing.com and you can follow Henry's projects at henryadamsvec.caThis interview was originally recorded on June 22nd, 2021 Get on the email list at bridgingthesocialdistance.substack.com

Finally! An episode with version control! And D&D! Chris Svec (@christophersvec) joins us to discuss why version control is critical to professional software development and what the most important concepts are. T-Shirts are on sale for a limited time: US distributor and EU distributor. You can read more from Chris on the Embedded Blog. He writes the ESE101 column (new posts soon!). If you are new to version control or learning git, Atlassian has a great set of posts and tutorials from high level “what is version control?” to helping you figure out good usage models (Svec mentioned gitflow). Atlassian has an interactive tutorial that lets you try out the repository commands (or try the Github interactive tutorials). Of course, there is a good O’Reilly book about git. If you are using SVN (aka Subversion), the Red Bean book from O’Reilly is a good resource. (Elecia's shirt said You Obviously Like Owls from topatoco.com.)

Wow. Just when you think you understand the league, the Reverend turns the world upside down defeating the absolute goliath in Grant's Guys Got Game. No one would have guessed that Grant's sexy team led by the sexy GM Grant would have taken the L to RJ's monstrosity of a team but hey, any given Thursday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The commish takes sole possession of first place after a dominant performance despite missing a few pieces. Svec's team halts the downward spiral with a favorable matchup, but questions still loom as Falcons offensive struggles continue. Chris Johns is on fire, Shray is ice cold and Shawn continues to march on despite his disgustingly gross team.
Luke sits down with John Svec, assistant coach at Brown University. They go deep into the recruiting process as John is a wealth of knowledge in the topic. Enjoy the podcast!

Matt takes us on a deep dive into the showbiz industry. What it's like to go on an audition, to win the room, be kind, and being prepare for, not only the moment, but for the role you are auditioning. If you are thinking about going into theater, then Matt is here to shed light on what you will have to endure and overcome to make it in the business. Also, Matt hones in how preparation has led into bigger roles throughout his career. Another key component is treating everyone with kindness. You never know who and when you will run into the person that can take your career to the next level. Originally from Boston Massachusetts, Matt grew up on show-tunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theater at both University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Rte 95 to NYC in 2004. In June of 2009 Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the TONY winning production of HAIR with TONY winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production “Across the Atlantic Sea” to The West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the 1st National US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR. Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the 1st National tour of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt’s cross country adventures continued in 2014 with the 1st National Tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and 5 instruments. Collectively over the last 5 years Matt is a veteran of almost 2000 performances. Thankfully Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he has starred opposite TONY winner Jessie Mueller, 2 time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and 7 time Grammy nominee, and the shows composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theater Company, directed by TONY winner Sam Gold. Most recent regional credits include: playing Guy in ONCE at Bucks County Playhouse and the upcoming World Premiere of Pure Country at TUTS, starring opposite TONY winner Levi Kreis. On television Matt has made many performance appearances with these multiple shows, including the Macys Thanksgiving Parade. Matt can also be seen on Person of Interest, Madam Secretary, Marvel’s Daredevil, EVIL, For Life, and Chicago PD. Matt lives with his beautiful wife and fellow performer (and Bostonian) Christine Dwyer, and their Boston Terrier “Chowdah". Matt and Christine also co-own THE WORKING STUDIO, a music theatre and acting studio dedicated to unlocking peoples potential and embracing individuality in the audition process.Contact info: https://www.theworkingstudio.net/theworkingstudio@gmail.comhttps://www.upgradeyouraudition.com/--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wherethefortuneis/message
An interesting tweet about the difference between working from home and what people are doing now. The Canadian Federal government gave the following advice: Finally, Svec’s family wants a cat. They probably won’t get a Sphinx despite it matching all the criteria. Maybe an Abyssinian. Or maybe a dog.

Kate and I have run in the same music circles for a number of years (big surprise). Now, Kate and I have both chosen career paths in and around the world of healthcare. Kate's story involves small joys embedded in a web of complicated connections.
Jon and I met more than 10 years ago through Willie's American Guitars, but we just recently connected the dots between our respective adoption stories.
Leah is a fantastic musician, hilarious, and a great person to have over to your house for a podcast. She also happens to be adopted. http://www.thehomesteadrecords.com/lott

Sarah and I met during the Minneapolis Fringe Festival in 2006, but we haven't seen much of each other since then. Sarah has a great story... take a listen.

Kayleen and Scott became friends by way of first becoming unlikely roommates. They built a support system for each other that has lasted a long time, powerful enough that you can actually hear the connection in this conversation.
The government might still be shut down, but Adult Friends is back for Season 2! Episodes will be released every two weeks this season, as the previous arrangement (every week) almost killed me. I met Regan, Taylor, and Tim a number of years ago through Common Roots connections. In 2013, they started an organization called, "Grown Up Club," which facilitated activities for adults to get to know each other, such as the comedy exchange and the singles exchange. GUC is unfortunately no longer with us (RIP), but fortunately Regan, Taylor, and Tim survived. Glad to be back. I hope you've been well.

Barbara moved to Minnesota three years ago, and we talked about her experiences in Massachusetts, New York, Indiana, and Minnesota. This will be the final episode of Season 1. Watch out for a special Halloween episode in October. Season 2 will likely commence in January, 2019.
Yezih and I have been colleagues in multiples settings for a number of years, and in that time, it's become clear that Yezih is a fan of friendship. So, I asked him to have a chat with me about it.
If you are new to version control or learning git, Atlassian has a great set of posts and tutorialsfrom high level “what is version control?” to helping you figure out good usage models (Svec mentioned gitflow).

When I had the idea to start this podcast, I tricked Michael and Peter into recording a conversation in my living room after a night of playing music and drinking beer. This late February evening was the night I captured Michael playing a descending line on the trumpet and synthesizer, simultaneously. It was so amazing, I knew I wanted to use it for the theme. I've used that line in C Major / A Minor as a guide for the rest of the music in each episode. This was my first attempt, so forgive me for the audio quality. Peter and Michael are the best.
Jill and I met as she walked through my front door, but that didn't stop us from having a fairly thorough discussion about LSAT prep, marriage, and friends.
Haakon Nelson and I took a road trip down to Decorah, IA in the middle of a snowstorm to visit Andy Meyer. After a night on the town, we got to talking, so I recorded it. I've known Andy since college, but we've become quite close over the last decade. Haakon and I became friends while we were both playing in a band that was preparing for a brief West Coast tour (https://www.cataldomusic.com/). I introduced Andy and Haakon while they were both living in Seattle, and they became fast friends. The episode ends with a yet-unreleased song titled Statues that I wrote after reflecting on the White Supremacist / Neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, VA in 2017.
Chris Cunningham has built his life around making music in NY, LA, and now Minneapolis (e.g., http://fothou.com/). John Keston has, among many other things, been making music in Minneapolis for more than 20 years (https://audiocookbook.org/).
In today's episode, we cover cats, dogs, rabbits, rogue taxidermy, surfer voice, relationships with musicians, creeps, and much much more.
I met Elli Rader at the 318 in Excelsior, MN around 2008-2009. Our paths have crossed many times in the intervening years, but it was nice to chat about her experience making friends as a person who has moved frequently.
John and Jacob are two of the funniest gentlemen I know. They are also friends. This episode eventually involves the story of how they met (with a bunch of other stuff, too).
In today's #maleallymoment, Leedjia Svec shares several stories of subtle but effective ways men have been her allies.

This week's episode is with Meg and Molly Svec. These sisters are the owners of Spilt Milk in Oak Park, Illinois (right outside of Chicago). I was excited to connect with them because I admittedly don't know anything about running a bakery. Meg and Molly graciously agreed to speak with me about their brand new business and to offer some pretty great words of wisdom for those among us looking to start something like Spilt Milk. We chat about how their bakery came into existence (finding space, piecing together funds, etc), what it's like to work with a family member and how good it feels to see your space full of happy patrons. The sisters talk candidly about the division of labor as business partners and why they decided to just turn off the business talk when they're not "at work". There are so many nuggets of truth in this episode. Meg and Molly both weigh in with their thoughts on making a career doing what you love and the big risks necessary to achieve this. I loved their transparent take on worrying about being "frauds" as well as why these feelings don't ultimately hold a lot of water for them. Thanks Meg and Molly! Spilt Milk is located at 103 S. Oak Park Avenue in Oak Park, IL http://www.spiltmilkpastry.com/ Instagram: @spiltmilkpastry Facebook: @spiltmilkpastry In Keeping Shop news...I'm thinking I might start blogging more about some of the business component that come up in each episode. What do you all think? Is this something you'd like to read more of and if so, what are the topics you'd like to see explored more? Shoot me an email with your thoughts. Thanks as always for listening and don't forget to share the show with friends.
