In this episode of WISE On Air, we dive into an unprecedented global research initiative exploring artificial intelligence's impact on higher education. Through conversations with research leads from six institutions across five continents, we uncover how different regions are approaching AI integration in universities and preparing students for an AI-powered future. Our guests share insights on various critical aspects of AI in higher education, from curriculum integration and faculty development to ethical considerations and workforce preparation. From the halls of an Ivy League institution in the United States to a pioneering university in Kazakhstan, from Spain to India, and beyond - each perspective adds a unique dimension to our understanding of this transformative moment in education. As part of WISE's latest research initiative, these institutions are collaborating to produce one of the most comprehensive global studies on AI in higher education. The findings, set to be presented at the WISE 12 Summit in Fall 2025, promise to provide actionable insights for education leaders worldwide. Welcome to Grit & Growth's masterclass on downsizing with Esi Ansah, executive director of the Center for Leadership at Ashesi University and founder of Axis Human Capital, an organizational development consulting firm. From managing team morale to ensuring your downsizing plan is data driven, Ansah provides a clear blueprint for leaders facing tough HR decisions.Without a doubt, downsizing is one of the most dreaded tasks – for CEOs and employees alike. Which is why Esi Ansah tries to prepare leaders to handle it with clarity, effective communication, and compassion. And she also reminds small to medium-size businesses that, regardless of size, every company needs to have policies and plans to deal with downsizing.Key Takeaways Gather data – before you even think about downsizing“The most common mistake is the lack of data documentation. It always comes back to bite you. When you need to downsize, you need to justify every decision that you make.”Honesty can be the hardest part of downsizing“Sometimes it shocks people because they didn't see it coming, and they didn't see it coming because perhaps the leader in that organization did not articulate it clearly enough or, in the bid to avoid causing fear and panic, they actually avoid telling people the full truth.” Communicating bad news requires data, transparency, empathy, and support“One of the best things you can do, especially for SMEs, is: don't wait till all the decisions have been made and then, bam, you just release the information. Once you get a sense of whatever change in your circumstances is driving the need for downsizing, start with just sending out a couple of feelers and, you know, soft communication.”Always follow your local labor laws“If you skip any of those loops and an unhappy employee wakes up to the reality that, hey, I don't think I'm being treated fairly, and then off they go – sometimes without coming back to you to say, look, I realize that you've skipped some steps here. They go straight to the labor commission. And then once they call you in, that's not pleasant.”CEOs shouldn't offload everything to HR“Visibility of leaders is extremely important in a time like this. The last thing you want is HR feeling already overburdened and probably handling all the pressure that comes from the team. But when you have a CEO who would go around, you know, walk the floor, talk to people, and where there's anything that he can do, you know, he does it and he makes it very visible.”Communicate your vision for AFTER the downsizing“If you focus on the reason why you're downsizing and you don't focus on what you are evolving to do differently, you will have people who see the doom and gloom and there's really nothing that inspires them about the future. That's dangerous. You lose more people that way.”Listen to Esi Ansah's advice on how to identify –— and, more critically, avoid – the most common pitfalls of downsizing. Learn how clear policies and transparent communication can help minimize messy post-layoff negotiations and allow leaders to focus on supporting laid-off employees through the transition, as well as those who stay.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Solving global or even national-level problems is never easy, but what if these challenges ultimately boiled down to a lack of leadership? And if developing the next generation of leaders is then the answer, how can countries go about doing this? Patrick Awuah's solution was to found a university in his home country of Ghana. He is the Founder and President of Ashesi University, a private, not-for-profit institution that has quickly gained a reputation for innovation and quality education in Ghana. Patrick holds bachelor degrees in Engineering and Economics from Swarthmore College; an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business; and honorary doctorates from Swarthmore College, Babson College, and the University of Waterloo. He has been on various "best of" lists, named by Fortune magazine as among the world's top 50 leaders, and won many prestigious awards for his contributions and work, including the John McNulty Prize, the WISE Prize, and the MacArthur fellowship or the MacArthur "genius" award. His 2007 TED talk on leadership and his vision for Ashesi University has been viewed almost 2 million times. In this conversation with Patrick, we travel from his childhood in Ghana to his time at Swarthmore College in the U.S. as an international student and his eventual journey back home to put his experience and learning to work to train the next generation of African youth and leaders. Patrick's work is also one example of how former international students to the U.S. have gone back to their home countries and have been inspired to set up universities that draw upon the American liberal arts model. Episode Themes: How Patrick's time at Swarthmore College in the U.S. was transformative and how it impacted his views on education and leadership Important lessons that Patrick took away from his corporate sector stint at Microsoft, and how he applied them to education Why the question of transformation in Africa is a question about leadership, and how the rise of Asian economies like Singapore inspired Patrick's vision for Ghana Can we re-frame brain-drain as a win-win situation and can student migration play a role in preserving global talent? The impact that numerous awards and recognition have had on Ashesi University and on Patrick's work Lessons Patrick learned when founding Ashesi University and his advice and tips for future university founders Resources from this episode: Follow Patrick on Twitter and LinkedIn Other Resources: My book: America Calling: A Foreign Student in a Country of Possibility Newsletter sign-up: www.rajikabhandari.com LinkedIn: @rajikabhandari Twitter: @rajikabhandari Instagram: @rajika_bhandari

Digital Imaginaries - Africas in Production | Opening Weekend [18.11.2018] On the weekend following the opening of the research and exhibition project »Digital Imaginaries – Africas in Production«, a comprehensive supporting program was offered at the ZKM. In addition to discussions with artists from various African countries, there had been guided tours through the exhibition with the international curators and artists, as well as a coding workshop and a maker's brunch with representatives of maker spaces from Togo, Ghana, Senegal and local initiatives from Karlsruhe. Presentation with the Woe Lab (Togo), Agbogbloshie Makerspace Platform (Ghana), Fablab »DEFKO AK NIĒP« (Senegal), Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct (South Africa), and local initiatives from Karlsruhe Africa is changing – radically – and digitization is playing a pivotal role. On this continent that has the world’s youngest population, digital practices are emerging that transform Africa’s societies and their global perception. Apps and digital content developed in Africa are increasingly entering the global technosphere. African digital infrastructures meanwhile remain marked by local and global asymmetries despite the widespread use of mobile phones. New forms of digital inequality are accompanying the rise of a number of well-connected digital hubs and scenes. African digital innovations and practices still rely on infrastructures dominated by the Global North, and increasingly also by China. The exhibition and research project »Digital Imaginaries«, which was developed in collaboration with partners in Dakar and Johannesburg, takes this contradictory diversity of digital phenomena in Africa as its point of departure. Like the exhibitions, workshops, and events that took place in Senegal and South Africa as part of the project, the contributions now to be seen at the ZKM are by no means confined to describing digital transformations. Many of the works featured in this show engage with African histories, practices, and conditions to glean inspiration for emancipated digital futures that will withstand market-oriented interests and post-colonial hegemonies. Starting from artists’ positions which have developed in various countries on the African continent and in the African diaspora, the works featured in the exhibition articulate the necessity for more diverse, richer global digital imaginaries.
