SummaryThe Bible says that no matter what life storms we are going through at the moment, Jesus intercedes for us. He loves us and he is for us. IntroductionWhere is Jesus in all this? He seems to have abandoned me when I needed him the most. Have you ever thought that? The account of the disciples caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee promises that's not the case. Their experience shows us that Jesus intercedes for us when we're in the eye of a storm. Didn't Jesus Know About the Storm? There must have been moments when the disciples were battling the wind and the waves, far from the shores of Lake Galilee when they thought, Why isn't Jesus here? Why did he insist we get in the boat and make our way to the other side? Didn't he know there was going to be a storm? Why has he abandoned us when we need him the most? Jesus Was Praying for His DisciplesBut Matthew tells us Jesus hadn't abandoned them at all. Jesus knew there would be a storm and he was praying for his disciples. Jesus is God in human form, and so he knows the past, the present and the future. He was praying about the storm even before the winds started picking up. Jesus Intercedes for Us Before the FatherJesus has prayed for us and all that we've faced in the past. Jesus intercedes for us through this cost of living crisis and anything else we're facing right now. He's prayed for what we'll go through this year too. He's praying we'll make it through whatever storms we face. The Bible says that no matter what life storms we are going through at the moment, Jesus intercedes for us. He loves you. He is for you. If you trust him as your Saviour, he is interceding for you right now. Think It OverThink about the following: Knowing Jesus intercedes for us, what would you ask Jesus to pray for you today? SummaryWhen we focus on our circumstances – whatever they are – we start to sink. So don't panic! Instead fix your eyes on Jesus for your survival. IntroductionWhen you look around you, what do you see? A creaking health service? Workers striking? A cost of living crisis? War in Ukraine? Failing health? A shrinking job market? A generation falling behind in education? Jesus says, look at me instead. Peter Walked on Water!Only Peter had the faith the step out of the boat. Physics tells us that a grown man could not walk on water. But Peter did. Often, we move so quickly to focusing on his sinking that we forget to pause and note: PETER WALKED ON WATER! So, what went wrong? Peter took his eyes off Jesus. The moment he looked away from Jesus and looked at the circumstances around him – the wind and the waves – he began sinking. Fix Your Eyes on JesusWhen we focus on our circumstances – whatever they are – we start to sink. If you want to walk about the storms of life, you have to fix your eyes on Jesus: If you look at the world, you'll be distressed; if you look within, you'll be depressed; if you look at Christ, you'll be at rest. Pastor Rick WarrenDon't panic! Instead fix your eyes on Jesus for your survival. Think It OverThink about the following: What helps you focus on Jesus in the storms of life? SummaryHow to walk on water if you're in the middle of a storm? You have to be willing to do what Jesus wants you to and get out of the boat! IntroductionHave you ever been water skiing? Or surfing? Or ice skating? It takes courage to step on the water, or to catch a wave and let it take you, or to step onto the ice rink. I've only ever attempted the latter and fallen flat on my face! How to Walk on Water? Get Out of the Boat! But if you're going to achieve any of those things, you have to take the step of faith at some point. There's no point in standing on the shore with water skis on. You have to get out on the water. A surfboard might make a fashion statement, but it's of little use unless you're going to plunge into the ocean and surf the waves. Ice skates make terrible shoes! You have to get out on the ice. Take a Step of FaithSometimes, God uses the storms of life to encourage us to take a step of faith. If my line of legal work hadn't changed beyond all recognition, I might still not be a Salvation Army officer. And being made redundant probably pushed me to make the right decision to obey God's calling rather than prevaricating over whether I should or not. If you want to know how to walk on water, then the first step is to get out of the boat. Is It Possible to Walk on Water?Peter would never have attempted to walk on water had it not been for the storm. The storm caused him to react in faith and to experience a special outpouring of God's power. If you feel you're in a storm at the moment, and you want to know how to walk on water, pause and ask God what he wants you to do. And be willing to do it. It's time to get out of the boat! Think It OverThink about the following: Where is Jesus inviting you to step out of your comfort zone and learn how to walk on water? SummaryWhen Jesus stills the storm he brings unexpected help and encouragement just at the time you are most desperate. Have You Seen a Ghost?Have you ever thought you'd seen a ghost? People at Maidenhead Salvation Army have told me our building is haunted by a ghost called Mabel. I admit I have thought I've heard her on more than one occasion, but then my brain kicks in and I can usually establish the noise is coming from something quite ordinary! At the moment, there's probably enough going on in your life that you don't need to be frightened by ghosts! But what stops us from running away from the storms of life we find ourselves in? Only Jesus. The disciples were fighting exhaustion. They're trying to keep a low profile following Herod's murder of John the Baptist. They're recovering from the responsibility of trying to feed five thousand men and their women and children in the remote area on the shore of Galilee to where Jesus had led them. And they'd been fighting the wind and waves for several hours. Jesus Stills the StormJesus comes to them. But he comes walking on the water. It is unexpected. Impossible. No wonder they thought they'd seen a ghost! They were terrified. But Jesus says, Don't be afraid. I am here. And then Jesus stills the storm. Do you need to hear those words today? Don't be afraid. Jesus is here. Jesus stills the storm. He brings unexpected help and encouragement just at the time you are most desperate. In his presence, fear is gone. Take courage in him today. Weekly SummaryThis week in Battle Drill devotionals, we are focusing on encountering Jesus in the storms of life. SummaryYou need to focus on Jesus not the storm, and trust the one who controls the storms of life and ensure they do not overwhelm you. Have You Been Blown Off Course? Some of us have been blown off course over recent years, particularly by the Coronavirus storm of 2020-2021 and its aftermath. We feel out of control. Our health, our finances, our jobs, even our spiritual lives are nowhere near where we intended. We just want to feel safe again! That's why so many of us were so keen for things to “go back to normal.” Then the cost-of-living crisis hit! Focus on Jesus Not the StormWhere is Jesus in all of this? He shows up! He doesn't ask us to come to him. In fact, John records the boat had gone three or four miles from the shore. So, Jesus walks a long way on the water to come to us in our storms. He doesn't stand on the side lines shouting instructions at us. What we need most in the storms of life is his presence. So that's what Jesus does. He shows up. We can focus on Jesus not the storm. Trust the One Who Controls the StormsYou may feel abandoned and lonely just now. As if no one cares what you're really going through. All is well, despite your storms. Jesus comes to you with his peace-making presence. Focus on Jesus not the storm. You can trust the one who controls the storms of life and ensure they do not overwhelm you. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 2nd August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Some news in brief first... Tesla has increased it's referral round to September 16. Free unlimited supercharging for S, X and Model 3 Performance. Retroactively applied to all existing owners and from today, forward with new orders. I think i have this straight, ALL owners can give their referrals free unlimited Supercharging but only for the purchase of a Model S, Model X, or Model 3 Performance. Earnings Call! So where will they get capital for Giga 3, Giga 4, Semi and Y. Are they on target on profitability and cashflow positive in 2018? What's the cash balance, last time it was $2.7bn at start of Q2? Any update on Model 3 production. 6,000/week by End of August? How profitable is each car? If you remember Sandy Monroe took one apart and said there's a much bigger margin in it that some think. I wonder how many financial analysts understand the upside to building EVs? How will service scale with all those Model 3s? Will service Centres continue to be run to break even? Thoughts on the tapering down of the federal tax credit? Polestar 1 will debut in North American at Monterey Car Week from 23-26 August. NISSAN LEAF SALES DOWN IN THE U.S...AGAIN Eric Loveday for InsideEV's says: "You win some…you lose some. Or, in the case of the Nissan LEAF, you lose again." Eric digs into the monthly data writing: "With just 1,149 LEAFs sold in July, the electric hatch again sees sales down both month-over-month and year-over-year. In the month-over-month area, sales dropped off by 10.4% from the 1,376 LEAFs sold in June. Year-over-year, sales dipped by 8.5%, down from the 1,283 sold last July" When you see the InsideEVs estimate of 14,250 Model 3's sold in July alone, knowing it's only going upwards from there, it's painful for LEAF fans such as myself to see it has sold 7,808 all year. ALL YEAR! If you're a podcast listener and either have a LEAF on order in Europe, or bought one recently, what was the wait time? Are the orders holding up better over here? I'm not going to compare the Model 3 to a LEAF tough, maybe the exact ASP for a Model 3 Performance will be revealed on the earning call in a couple of hours but if I guess ~$70k, those cars aren't in competition with each other. https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-sales-july-2018/ 2018 SALES IN EUROPE SHOW ELECTRIC UP, DIESEL DOWN In the first half of 2018, EVs were doing very well in Europe: "Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFVs) performed well, as electrics, hybrids and plug-ins posted an increase of 31% and recorded 450,200 registrations, making up 5.4% of total registrations. They accounted for 56% of the total market in Norway, 13% in Finland and 11% in Sweden. However, AFVs only made up 3.4% of the German market." reports Green Car Congress. "The diesel decline continued during the first six months of 2018, as registrations were down by 17%. The fuel type accounted for just 37% of the total market—its lowest share since 2001. Diesel’s biggest declines took place in Norway (-32%), the UK (-30%), Slovenia (-28%), Finland (-20%) and Belgium (-20%)" Felipe Munoz, JATO’s global analyst: "It was certainly a good first half for the European market and this is due to the choice that consumers now have. Car makers continue to update and modernise their traditional models, while the range of SUVs on offer continues to grow and appeal to all kinds of budgets and needs. The diesel crisis certainly affected the speed of growth in the market, but consumers are overcoming this by turning to more attractive gasoline and AFV solutions." http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/08/20180801-jato.html TOYOTA SALES UP IN EUROPE And staying here in Europe can I talk Toyota? They currently have an ad campaign selling soft hybris as being "self charging" because, they claim, it can do a bit of regen. Now the reaction from the EV community has been overwhelmingly negative. For weeks they've been taking heat on social media. My personal opinion? I think it's frustrating because it obfuscates the technology. They claim it's aimed at people who don't understand hybrids, and who don't want a full electric, but i think they should the benefits of hybrid such as lower emissions. Anyway my opinion aside, because it really doesn't matter, how are sales? 46% of all Toyota are soft hybrids but against the 521,000 total cars sold, the amount of hybrids sold in a rounding error. They sold 1,693 plug in cars. So of course, against half a million cars, just over 1,500 plug ins is insignificant. Expecting them to do anything OTHER than promote soft hybrids at the expense of a a real EV is crazy. In response to criticism I've seen Toyota social media protesting they have a strong plan for plug ins, BEVs and fuel cell vehicles. Well this year they sold 101 Mirai's. 100 of which were for a taxi project in Paris. In other words, they sold one. https://insideevs.com/only-0-3-of-toyota-sales-in-europe-were-plug-in-hybrids/ VW PLANS WOLFSBURG CLOSURE 1-2 DAYS A WEEK TO DEAL WITH WLTP "Volkswagen plans to shut its main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, for 1-2 days a week between August and end September to deal with issues arising from a new engine emissions test cycle." according to Autonews.com: "Volkswagen's plant in Emden will also be closed on some days in the third and fourth quarter due to lacklustre demand for midsized cars." MERCEDES-BENZ EQS CAUGHT IN SPY SHOTS "Spy photographers have recently captured a large electric sedan from Mercedes-Benz testing at Mercedes's headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany." says Eric Evarts for Green Car Reports: "In line with Mercedes-Benz's naming convention and statements from company executives, observers expect the new sedan to be called the EQS, sitting parallel in Mercedes-Benz's lineup with its flagship S-Class. Previous statements from Mercedes executives have hinted that the EQS will go on sale in 2020, likely as a 2021 model." MotorTrend has the pics, they say: "We now have the first spy shots of a large electric sedan to sit alongside the S-Class. Mercedes execs have previously hinted at the car starting production in 2020, which means we'll likely see it arrive in showrooms as a 2021 model." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117999_mercedes-benz-eqs-caught-in-spy-shots TESLA IS WORKING ON A ‘PARTY & CAMPER MODE’ Fred at Electrek picked up on a tweet by Elon Musk: "Tesla has already made available a ‘camper mode’ to let owners sleep in their cars while running things like climate control, but it now sounds like Tesla is going a step further to enable you to power all your outdoor fun." Elon tweeted: "We’re adding a “party & camper mode” soon to S/3/X, so your car can maintain air flow, temp, selective lights, music & power devices for 48 hours or more while parked. Big batteries rock" https://electrek.co/2018/07/31/tesla-party-camper-mode/ COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 198 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #137 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio A work of art gazed upon and appreciated by millions, created by the hands of a talented often ahead-of-their-time individual dedicated hours, perhaps months to their creation. A full and luscious garden, cultivated over years of planning, tending and careful editing and replenishing. A relationship built on admiration, truth and kindness, strengthening with time, patience and careful attention. The foundation for living simply luxuriously begins with the concept of a life of quality over quantity in all arenas of our lives. It is an understanding that to build our lives on superficial expectations that appease the outside world whether for appearances or applause is to leave us living in a shell which provides a lack of intimate comfort and joy. And so, as I have been observing ever more reassuringly and mentioned in the last episode of 2016, it is a conscious decision to live a life of quality that will in time, gradually, deepen the life you have the opportunity to experience. Whether it's choosing to live in a town or community that may be more expensive and therefore take more time to save up to live in, as well as forcing you to downsize, but ultimately brings you more peace of mind, an ease to be yourself and those you love to blossom, or choosing to enjoy food that your body needs and rise to the abilities it is capable of rather than reach for what is expedient and temporarily satiating, a life of quality is enriching. But as you may have noticed in both of these examples, it takes a conscious awareness of what you need and why you're doing what you're doing. Clarity, focus and preparation are key, but these investments pay off. How do we then, as we step into 2017, welcome in more quality reduce the quantity that tempers what is possible? As I mentioned here, it requires of each of us to take a simple, but significant approach, to not take on too much at once, but rather one item at a time. So why not take it month by month? Inspired by a few of my resolutions for the year, I contemplated how I could be most successful, and this is what I've come up with. Each month one idea, task or concept will be the focus and I will check in regularly to share how I am doing, and you too can share your journey. The first month of January, since so many of our resolutions tend to reflect on how well or poorly we ate during the holiday season and we want to feel better, not merely look better, we'll be tasked with the following: ~Reduce or eliminate entirely one food or food type that does not serve you well UPDATE: Click here to see how the month progressed at the mid-way point I've chosen to leave this month quite broad because we all have our triggers. We all know what is helping and what is hurting, what is a weakness and what is easy to walk away from. I have chosen sugar. For one month I am going to eat in such a way that eliminates refined sugars (not natural sugars such as fruit). Recognizing that not all situations that involve food will be under my control (dining at others' homes, work events, etc.), the goal is to eliminate, but there may be lapses. However, I want to observe how I feel as I refrain from eating refined sugars. After reading about a recently released book, The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes, my challenge was solidified. For one month, let's see what happens. Having done this in the past, but not as publicly, I remember the experience being very positive in a variety of ways (better mood, a fierce ability to discern sugar in unexpected items - ketchup, cheap chocolate, etc.), and I look forward to seeing if I can observe the same and perhaps more observations that cultivate more quality regarding my health and overall everyday routine. Over the holiday I gradually began the reduction, as if to wean myself off of the refined carbohydrates, and in just one week, I felt better in my body. So we'll see how it goes. I will check in on Wednesday January 18th to share my progress, successes and oopses. I look forward to hearing what you have chosen to reduce or eliminate as well and learning how the journey is going on the 18th. Each month we'll tackle one item to reduce or eliminate in our lives, as a way to reduce the quantity and enhance the quality. Below is a look at year. February: ~Letting go of a social media app that isn't serving you as you strive to build relationships March ~Letting go of busy mentality April ~Reducing mindless eating May ~Mastering the use of credit June ~Understanding and reducing self-doubt July ~Curtailing the negative commentary (internal and external) August ~How to approach staying informed but not overwhelmed by the news of the world September ~Designated no work zones October ~Smart shopping for clothing November ~Recognizing, understanding and eradicating self-imposed limitations December ~13 Life Truths to Remember About Making Progress With so much that is worth attaining and welcoming into our lives, time and attention is needed to be successful. Patience is required. And while sometimes we just want to pounce, so long as we are assured that the path we are on is the right one, we can allow events, our health, our relationships to progress at their natural pace. After all, we first need to know what we want to plant in our garden, then we must plant it followed by much patience, but confidence knowing that we have invested wisely, and in its own time, it will bloom and then we will be able to savor all the goodness. I look forward to stepping into this journey and sharing my experience with you and hearing about yours. Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful week. ~The Simply Luxurious Life Mission Statement Petit Plaisir ~Claridge & King Boyfriend Shirt ~Images: (1) Portland's Japanese Garden (2) my mother's garden full of dahlias (3) Norman & Oscar along the Oregon coast during a special trip this past fall 2017. The driving conditions in Amafi The Emerald Grotto The amazing ceramics shop we visited right across from the caves The big beautiful tables and other vases Our lunch in Priaino, a big beautiful cove where you can eat right on the water The restaurants we ate at in Amafi were good even though it was touristy places How the kid next to us at lunch was eating spaghetti and meatballs which we talk about this in another podcast and how it is a bit "don't" in Italy How the restaurants there will cater to the tastes of their clientele without really teaching them about the Italian culture The large buses on the winding roads How there are a lot fewer cars on the road at night That night we went to see the procession of Saint Andrew This link will give your more info on him, but here's the gist: He was probably the brother of Simon Peter. They were both fishermen (so I did see him holding a fishing net), thus the tradition that when Jesus called them to be his disciples, he said he would make them "fisher of men" How Amafi is a member of the four Maritime Republics — Pisa, Genoa, Venice, Amafi The size of the procession compared to ours in August How the priests had to carry down the statute down the steep stairs Why the saints are only the busts How they set off cannon shots during the procession which can be pretty dang surprising Our dinner of fried fish, Neapolitan pizza, and vodka — the vodka being half the cost of the meal The fireworks of the festival Furore where our hotel La Locanda del Furore was How we feel we compare to the tourism in Amafi How the Amafi coast is probably not for the physically challenged Renting a boat and seeing the coast from a boat and just how beautiful it is We highly recommending renting a boat when you are there to see the coast from the water How you steer away from Amafi during July and August Ravello, one of the most beautiful and amazing spots How Paul realizes he actually was in Amafi years ago The Villa Cimbrone gardens with a terrace 390m or 1,300 ft. high with amazing views How the gardens are so beautiful in Amafi How beautiful the town of Ravello was The amazing horizon pools in Amafi How a trip like this can inspire you to improve your own space The restaurant where we ate lunch on our final day which you can only get to by boat How the Amafi coast reminded of us mix of the south of France and the Greek islands The Monastero Santa Rosa. I mentioned in the podcast I would scan some photos, but actually their website does an amazing job with a photo tour here. Where the nuns would get mummified back in the day How Steven forgets that outside of Puglia, especially in touristy places like Amafi, others speak English How the radio actually had a segment called "English is the future" and taught listeners English through the song Killing Me Softly Steven enjoying the boat ride Paul relaxing in the boat Paul taking a dip in the blue water The church in Amalfi The procession of Saint Andrew The view from Ravello Villa Cimbrone gardens Getting cheeky in the gardens Our final lunch right on the water [td_smart_list_end] Here's Paul going Facebook Live during the podcast: So what'd you think of our trip to the Amalfi Coastline? What did we miss? Anything you really want to see? Let us know in the comments.

Month Upon a Time, Episode #3 (August): How does one find words to describe the force of nature that is Brooks Ashmanskas? "Funny," "outrageous," "fearless" - they just don't seem to do him justice. Brooks and I crossed like ships in the night 15 years ago, when he made his Broadway debut taking over the role of Bud Frump from me in the last (first) Broadway revival of How to Succeed.... That marked the start of a truly impressive Broadway career that has included such plays and musicals as Dream, Little Me, the Bernadette Peters Gypsy, The Producers, The Ritz, Present Laughter, Promises Promises, and of course his Tony-nominated turn in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. Add to that a bunch of Off Broadway and regional productions and wonderful recordings (Songs for a New World, It's Only Life) and you start to get a sense of how versatile and accomplished and BUSY a guy he is! Big thanks to Dan Adler, who put forward this month's song idea and is about to participate in his fourth consecutive Burning Man! If you don't know what Burning Man is, you should definitely check it out. It seems like an amazing event.... And special thanks to the wonderful composer Debra Barsha for her great song idea, which isn't the central idea for this song but is woven in nonetheless. This episode was recorded August 19, 2011.
