Well, we may have problems getting Chinese tourists back to New Zealand, but the Chinese military seem interested in the region, conducting naval training practices about 130 to 150 nautical miles off the coast of Sydney. So far, China has complied with international law and the UN Convention on the law on the sea. There is no indication they won't continue to do so. This is not an overly aggressive move, but it should give the Government pause for thought - and focus thinking on the state of our navy. There are some oddities about this mission in the Tasman Sea - oddities that shouldn't be ignored. The first is the combination of ships sent our way. Speaking to media yesterday, Prime Minister Luxon said the Chinese warships in the Tasman have different capabilities from what we've seen before. The other oddity is that neither Australia or New Zealand received notice from China that it would be heading our way. No one knows their intentions - where they're going or why. Nor was there formal warning of what is thought to have been a live fire exercise, causing several commercial airlines to re-rout or change their flight paths. It was commercial airline staff who picked up unexpected radio messages from the Chinese navy, warning them to divert from an area between New Zealand and Australia where military drills were being carried out. Given the Tasman is basically a busy harbour bridge for planes flying between Australia and New Zealand, I'd quite like that information to be provided ahead of time - please. The Australian Minister for Defence, Richard Marles, said Australia would normally give 12- 24 hours' notice of a live firing event. So what's going on? It's quite possible China is responding to the Australian navy conducting ‘freedom of navigation' exercises off the Chinese coast. A little tit-for-tat - and a reminder of China's capabilities. With no one picking up the phone to offer an explanation, perhaps China sees this as an opportunity to see what kind of political and military response this unprecedented move generates from Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand has sent the HSS Te Kaha and a P-8 Poseidon aircraft to monitor the Chinese movements - take that China! Politically, explanations are being demanded - politely at this stage. Defence Minister Judith Collins has called the Chinese actions unusual, but didn't go so far to call it a show of force by China. But with China's continuing encroachment into the Pacific, and a formalised security deal with the Solomon Islands now in play, surely their intentions is to spend more time in the Tasman Sea. Without a robust response - what's stopping them? Defence Minister Judith Collins says the presence of three Chinese naval ships off Australia is a wake-up call for New Zealanders. It sure is. We have depleted our defence services, we're an isolated country that can't protect ourselves on our own, and we're very vulnerable to supply chains being disrupted. Wake-up call received loud and clear. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Prime Minister has brushed off his faux pas yesterday, when he seemed to be taking a crack at Australians. Minister Paul Goldsmith was being questioned over removing Māori greetings from his Matariki invitation to an Australian Minister. In his defence, Chris Luxon said in his dealings with Australians, it pays to be incredibly simple. ZB political correspondent Barry Soper said the Government had bigger things to worry about on our shores. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Planet A Dan Jørgensen talks to Chris Bowen, Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy. This July was the hottest month ever recorded. Just another fact that underlines that humanity has to live with the devastating consequenses of climate change such as natural disasters. “No country is being spared, and they're increasingly frequent, increasingly severe, and increasingly unnatural. They're not natural disasters anymore, because they're caused by human activity” says Chris Bowen. But what can governments such as the Australian and the Danish do to tackle the climate crisis? How do you ensure green transition of an economy that used to build on fossil fuels? And what do we need to get out of COP28 in Dubai? That's being discussed in this episode where Chris Bowen shares his experience with setting a new and ambitious course for Australian climate policy, passing Australia's Climate Act and increasing the national climate targets.
At some date between August and December of this year, we Australians are going to be asked to vote in a referendum on whether we do or do not approve of altering the nation's Constitution “to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice”. The issue is particularly complicated by the long history in this country of fractured relationships between the indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. It is a sobering realisation that it is only 50 years or so since a referendum was passed to recognise Aboriginal people as citizens of the Commonwealth of Australia. An extraordinary state of affairs given that the Aboriginal peoples had been living on this land for around 65 millennia whilst those issuing the edict had not even been here for one quarter of one millennium. The situation leading to the current referendum proposal, demands reasoned discussions and debates, and clarification of points of difference. Tragically, the arguments between the supporters and the non-supporters of the current proposition, are becoming increasingly fierce. Circumstances demand the need for the clarification of misunderstandings of intentions along with the exposure of deliberate attempts to spread misinformation, disinformation, alternative facts, and fake news! Richard's guest in this episode is Tony Gleeson who is attempting to respond to these challenges. Tony certainly fits the category of a “thoughtful and committed citizen” as the farmer that he has long been. He has also had an illustrious career as a scientist with the NSW Department of Agriculture, CSIRO, and the NSW Oversees Trade Authority. He was a senior policy advisor and Chief of Staff for the Australian Minister for Primary Industries and Energy in the Hawke government.

Here's what you need to know about Australia's Retirement System: It's really big. It's government mandated. It's privately run. It's really sophisticated. Still curious? Host Josh Cohen's two guests have played meaningful roles in the system's development from the highest levels of government and industry. The Honorable Nick Sherry started one of the first modern Superannuation Funds in Australia and then went to be the leading minister in the government overseeing the industry. Ian Silk ran the largest Super Fund called Australian Super. There's a lot we can learn from their experiences. Key Takeaways: [:19] Josh Cohen, your host, introduces today's topic: Australia and their compulsory retirement system with very sophisticated investments that cause admiration worldwide. [2:30] Josh is accompanied by two experts to dive deep into the origin and evolution of the Australian retirement system. [2:55] Nick Sherry joins the conversation. He is a former Australian politician who served as a member of the Australian Senate for the state of Tasmania from 1990 until 2012, Sherry was sworn in as the Assistant Treasurer in 2009, after serving as the first Australian Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law. [4:39] Nick shares how he accidentally got involved in the retirement space. [5:45] Nick explains how Australia began to shape a new retirement policy. [6:40] Josh describes how the industrial awards system work along with the social wage. [7:56] Nick shares the development of the House Plus Fund. [15: 23] Ian Silk, Chief Executive at AustralianSuper, joins the conversation by providing answers about how Fund mergers work in Australia. [16:47] Ian talks about his vast experience in the field of funds. [17:18] Ian dives deep into the five sectors the retirement providers fall into. [18:30] Ian describes two reasons why the owners have decided not to run their own plans. [20:05] Compulsion arrived to change how things were doing in regards to retirement. [20:34] An important feature of the Australian retirement system: An employer can run his/her own plan or pick a super plan as the default for his/her workers. There is always a default investment option if the employer doesn't make an election. [21:28] Josh talks about Industry funds that arise in the late 1980s and Ian expands on the topic. [23:39] Josh introduces the fourth sector: The retail sector. [25:32] Ian explains how people took their funds from retail to industry. [25:43] The fifth sector is called the Self Managed Super, where people decide to run their own Super. Ian describes the one big driver of its popularity. [26:58] Ian explains how Australian Super originated and how it scaled. [28:49] The area of investing innovation is the one that is admired by many in Australian Super. Ian describes this particular feature of the Australian Super. [30:02] Ian shares what improvements could be done to an already sophisticated Australian retirement system. Just over one year ago, at least 13 Australian women and hundreds of others were subjected to invasive gynaecological examinations without warning or explanation while they were transiting on flights through Doha Airport. It caused international outrage at the time, but what has happened since to ensure that those responsible for this gross violation of their rights are held to account, and that this never happens to anyone else ever again? The Quicky speaks to one of the women involved, a lawyer for a group suing the Qatari authorities, and an International Law expert to find out who is to blame for what happened, and how to make sure it never happens to you. A note on this podcast: While preparing this episode, we reached out to the Australian Federal Government for comment. We received a response from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade noting that they were unable to facilitate our interview request. We also contacted the Government of Qatar via their Embassy in Canberra for comment, but no response was received. The following is a statement from the office of the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne that was sent to one of our colleagues: Minister Payne and DFAT registered the Australian Government's serious concerns about this incident to Qatari Government authorities in both Canberra and in Qatar. The Australian Government sought an immediate investigation into the incident by Qatar authorities, and that action be taken against those responsible. The Australian Government also sought assurances that concrete steps be taken to ensure this cannot happen again. The Australian Government acknowledges the steps the Government of Qatar took in this matter, including a comprehensive investigation, the prosecution and conviction of those responsible, and the implementation of revised airport security processes to ensure this cannot happen again.
