Corey Artanis' journey to South Florida happened somewhat serendipitously. Paved with plenty of ups and downs, the path he took picked up cult-level interest and support, way before his dream of a brewery came true. His relentless focus and passion for bringing “unconventional ales for unconventional palates” led the way. I sat down with Artanis to discuss the challenges and triumphs of opening 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, and his future plans.READ the original (September 2020) full article HEREDale! Even amidst the utopian fields of golden barley the #GrainGang calls home, life still happens and the recording schedge sadly didn’t work out this week. SO, we combed through the annals and dusted off one of our all-favorites - a conversation with comedian, wordsmith, barrister, TikTok megastar,  and small dog enthusiast, Alex Kidd of DontDrinkBeers and Malt Couture! Recorded almost exactly a year ago, when the country was merely in the courting stage of both Zoom and COVID, the laughs are still just as loud today. Do yourself the favor of (re)listening to the smartest man in beer seriously lower himself to the Grain Gang level. Best case, you’ve got a good laugh; worst case, you’ll end up as “that guy” in a local improv class. ...... ........... ........... ............. Music: “Mountain Climb” by Jake Hill

Their desire to tell unique stories through written word led them to gigs with PorchDrinking (porchdrinking.com) and The Growler (growlermag.com).Time is spent discussing mental health and how those who suffer from depression and anxiety deal with the toxicity of social media. They mention how it's easy to forget that there are real people behind the accounts, but that the duo does a good job of sharing their failures as well as their successes. And it wouldn't be a 2020 podcast without discussing shelter-at-home, COVID-19, and George Floyd. The latter half of the journey to triple digits is off with a bang! We're talking remotely with Scott Janish, co-founder of Sapwood Cellars in Columbia, MD, with partner Michael Tonsmeire of The Mad Fermentationist. Noah had been an avid reader of Scott's own fantastic (if not originally named) brewing blog, ScottJanish.com, which has always differentiated itself by using beer research papers to inform brewing trials and experiments. He and Noah eventually met in person while Scott was doing research of his own, effectively developing the approach of his blog into a full book - The New IPA: Scientific Guide to Hop Aroma and Flavor. Naturally, we dive head first into Technical Town, and Noah and Matty get the lowdown on biotransformation, timing the addition of specific varietals, hot- vs. cold-side bitterness, and plenty more (which should be a perfect primer to place an Amazon order as soon as the episode is done). We also get into the origins of Scott's blog, what writing a goddamn book is like, and opening a brewery alongside another homebrewing figure, blogger, and author (American Sour Beer) in Mike. The conversation could have easily gone on for another couple hours, so this certainly won't be the last time you hear this man, despite the fact that he is far too smart to be speaking to Matt and Noah. As remote recordings can go, we had some audio issues from the distance, but be assured they'll be forgotten before you hear the word "linalool". Enjoy!Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

In a socially distanced world, devoid of live interviews, we finally dipped our toes into the remote recording waters. Those waters were mighty fine, as this week's guest is none other than the Pastry Stout Playboy himself, Alex Kidd.Unless you've been in quarantine for the last decade, you know that Alex is the man behind Don't Drink Beer, a blog that remains unparalleled in its wonderfully unique combination of humor, insight, and perspective. We get into DDB's origin story and wild trajectory, which ultimately gave birth to Alex's podcast, Malt Couture. Like the DDB blog, Malt Couture very much occupies its own category in the beer world, consisting of equal parts beer commentary and improvisational comedy. Alex shares a handful of stories from the improv world, touches on his day job as a lawyer, and had us laughing in a way that nearly required medical attention. It's true -- Unicorns DO exist.

Batch Brewing Company is in the heart of the Craft Beer mecca known as the inner west of Sydney. Taking a look at the local area these days, you will see over ten breweries littered around the suburbs in that area, but back in 2013 when Batch opened its doors, the numbers were more like 2 or 3.Fast forward 6 years and Batch is embarking on a new era for the company, with a second site almost ready to open, one of the founders returning to his homeland, and lots of new challenges in what has become a pretty crowded beer market.Andrew Fineran, also known as Chuck ,and Chris Sidwa, two ex-pat Americans began with a dream back in 2011 or so…they wanted to brew great beer for the people and start a true community brewery. Being that Andrew was a marketer for Lion Beer at the time and Chris was wrapped up in the world of high finance, they had all the skills they needed to make great beer…or so they thought. In this episode we take a bit of a look back at the past, the lessons learned and the mistakes made, and how they learned from those to create a thriving community brewery. There are some amazing beers being brewed in Queensland these days. Only a few years ago, the craft beer scene in the Sunshine State was pretty quiet, but all of a sudden there are new breweries and pubs popping up all over the place. Slowly but surely these new kids on the block are converting local drinkers to new flavoursome beers, and tap banks in local pubs now have other options outside of the big brewers mainstream mid-strength options. My guest was once the head of one of the largest craft beer brands in the country. Backed by an army of sales people, marketing assistants and plenty of cash, he turned his back on that life and moved North to the Sunshine State. It must have been the promise of sun and surf, and a massive market full of opportunities to convert drinkers over to the wonderful world of craft beer that saw him leave behind the spoils of working for a beer brand with serious muscle behind it.Ash Cranston was the Marketing Manager of Little Creatures for 4 years, and previously managed their dining hall for another 4 years…so he knows a few things about selling beers to punters. So why did he leave? What has he learned in building a big brewery from scratch? And why did he choose to put in a bottling, not a canning line, like the cool kids are doing? All of this, and more advice for new brewery builders...https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

And they had an early wake-up the next morning to go home on the boat. Something tells me this guy is a dedicated craft beer nut!Rick is actually a brewer from Blackmans Brewery and I asked him to come on the podcast to talk about the path he took to become a brewer, his career to date, and the options for brewers in terms of careers in the local and even international market.I enjoyed our conversation in the sun, sipping on some Farmhouse Ales, and I thought that others would like to hear his story, or maybe some of you out there are thinking of a career in brewing and need some help getting started.Whatever the case, I really hope you enjoy the conversation with Rick as much as I did!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

A few years ago, the wife and I took the kids on a family holiday to Vietnam. It was such a great experience for us all, the sights, the sounds the unique food and of course the amazing people. Before taking my trip I did a bit of research and found out that the was a pretty cool little craft beer scene beginning to bubble up to the surface over there, so I decided to do what I could to hijack my family holiday for the sake of craft beer. One of the items on my list was to visit a brewery I had read about called Pasteur St Brewing. Their mantra seemed cool, combine American Brewing techniques with the local produce to make great craft beer. One sip of the Pasteur St Jasmine IPA was all it took for me to fall in love with the Vietnamese craft beer scene…The man behind that beer, Alex Violette, was head brewer at Upslope Brewing in Colorado at the time that John Reid, Pasteur's founder pitched the idea to him. Alex loved it and moved to Saigon to begin a new brewing adventure. Very early on in the piece, Mischa Smith, knew he had to get in on the action of spreading craft beer love in Vietnam. He started as a volunteer behind the bar, being paid in beer and now he is Pasteurs St's Brand Ambassador.5 years and 200+ beers later, Pasteur St Brewing now has 4 tap Rooms and has nationwide distribution. It's been 3 years since I was in Vietnam and I was keen to find out how the scene is going in Vietnam, so I invited the guys on to talk all things Vietnamese Craft Beer.In this interview, Alex, Mischa and I try our best to keep things on track as we discuss such things as:How Pasteur St came to be;Making beers with local ingredients and winning awards for it;The perception that Vietnamese palates would be different to the western world; How the craft beer culture is Vietnam borrows from their well established coffee culture; When we will see their beers in Australia again; andMaking beer that smells like farts!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

Why? Well, he works for a big brewer, Lion Beer in Australia, and we all know the stigma that carries in some circles within the industry. However, the interesting thing about him is he currently works in their smallest brewery, The Eumundi Brewery, which is pretty much a brew pub run out of the Imperial Hotel. So yeah, cool story, smallest brewery inside a big beer operation...sounds like a bit of a contradiction, doesn't it?
