How Immersion Benefits You As A Storyteller

It's 2015, and I'm ready to take the next leap. I've been working with speakers one-on-one for a while and want to try my hand at hosting my own event. Except, I've never done this before, and if I do it… will anyone even come to it? How long should it be? What content should I cover? And what about the whole performance aspect of speaking? These are the questions going through my mind when I realize that I need to ask my Improv mentor, Alan Irwin, to join me in co-hosting this event. So I reach out to him: “Hey, Alan. Want to play? This is what I'm thinking. What do you think?" He loves the idea and soon we're planning all the details for our dream speaker power event on napkins and stickie notes.  On June 12th 2015, we host our very first live event and haven't stopped since. And today, I've invited my event co-hosting partner in crime back on the Storytelling School Podcast. He and I have gained many insights and fielded many questions after years of running these events.  So in this episode, we talk about how these workshops help you, as a speaker or storyteller, effectively express your message to an audience. We touch on developing and refining your ideas on your terms, including humor in your speech, and overcoming fear related to public speaking by answering questions like: How can you effectively dig deep into exploring the ideas and stories you want to share with an audience? What's the formula for adding humor to your Talk, and how does humor benefit you as the speaker or storyteller? How can you work on the fear you feel when telling a story or sharing your ideas in a presentation? And how does Improv influence you as a communicator or storyteller? What you will learn in this episode: How immersion helps you embody your stories and ideas What approach to take if you want to incorporate humor into your speech How to take on a character when you're afraid of giving a Talk or sharing your story Who is Alan? Storytelling has played a role in both of Alan Irwin's careers in different ways. He recently retired from a career spent in the infrared industry as a senior software engineer by day. However, he stumbled into Improvisational Comedy in his 30s and by night has performed it for over 30 years, while also spending most of that time teaching Improv. Improvisation has transformed Alan's teaching. His secret weapon lies in his penchant for making complex subjects accessible and fun. It has served him well worldwide in speaking engagements on a wide range of other topics, from robotics to crisis intervention (including suicide prevention). He's taken on the task of communicating very complex ideas to others in tech (and his interests, like geek culture and cheesemaking). About This Episode: What is “Chemo Brain?” The term started several decades ago when cancer patients tried to describe a number of symptoms they experienced during and after cancer treatments. These symptoms seemed to affect their mind's clarity of thought and effective information recall. Also referred to as "Chemo–Fog” back in the day, the phrase was initially popularized by patients getting chemotherapy. It's spread quickly in groups like the breast cancer community, who often would gather together in infusion centers to receive their periodic chemotherapy treatments. Some people thought they were crazy, because no one had communicated to them that the symptoms could occur. But his patients learned that others were experiencing similar things, they began asking more questions. In some cases, their doctors were dismissive. Other times their practitioners did try to get to the root of the symptoms. But, because little was known about the condition at the time, these efforts were not successful. As patience became aware that the symptoms were far more common than first suspected, they became more vocal about requesting help, and advocating for its recognition.Dr. Arash Asher of the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, joins they Our Cancer Journey Podcast to walk us through some of the more common symptoms of this condition. He then candidly discusses why medical professionals were so perplexed when initially hearing about this condition. Dr. Asher shares new science about the deeper understanding of the inflammatory cytokines* protein our bodies produce, and the theories of how these play a significant role in affecting our cognitive function.* - You may have heard the term "cytokines" before as they are directly linked to some of the worst symptoms patient's could experience with COVID-19Dr. Asher also shares some statistics about people being affected with these symptoms, and the good news is a large majority of people recover from the initial severity of this “foggy” experience. Finally, patients that have never had chemotherapy also experienced similar symptoms to those described as Chemo Brain. Because those patients were largely excluded from the conversation, a new and more accurate term has been developed to describe this condition: CRCI - Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment ANNOUNCING SEASON 2 of the OCJ Podcast! The improbably positive and up-beat podcast that explores ways to help YOU feel better, live happier, expand your self-empowerment, and enhance your life experience, IS BACK for its 2nd Season! We are so excited about the engaging guests, insightful topics and fun banter in our upcoming line-up that we had to share just a few of the memorable moments with you in advance!! Check out this Season 2 Trailer episode, enjoy the sonic ride, and don't miss a new show by following the Our Cancer Journey Podcast on your apps, by following the OCJ show's Facebook page, or by visiting the Official Our Cancer Journey Podcast Website! Episode Guest:Dr. Arash Asher, MD - Director of Cancer Survivorship & Rehabilitation at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Asher has a special interest in the physical and rehabilitative needs of cancer survivors who continue to experience the effects of their cancer and its treatment. He has led in the development of several unique cancer survivorship programs, each with the goal of optimizing physical, psychological, and spiritual resilience for patients with cancer.  Dr. Asher has also focused on improving outcomes for cancer patients and his expertise in the non-pharmacologic management of pain, cancer-related fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, neuropathy, exercise prescription for cancer patients, and the management other musculoskeletal problems. Dr. Asher is active in leading or participating in several studies, including evaluating the role of Qi Gong* for chemo-induced neuropathy, the impact of humor & laughter from Improvisational Comedy on the well-being of breast cancer survivors, and several other innovative explorations.  * - Dr. Asher partnered on the Qi Gong study with future Our Cancer Journey Podcast Guest Dr. Mao Shing Ni, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and best selling author.Dr. Asher completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the UCLA/Greater Los Angeles VA, and a cancer rehabilitation fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. This week on Yes But Why, we talk to Austin based actress and voiceover artist, Danu Uribe. Danu Uribe is an Emmy-nominated, full-time voice-over and on-camera talent for commercials, video games, film, animation, motion capture, corporate training, and eLearning projects. Danu has twenty years of audio and video studio experience. Danu earned her B.A. in Drama from Texas Woman's University, received her introduction to comedy performing with the critically acclaimed, multimedia sketch comedy troupe, The Latino Comedy Project, and then, completed studies in Writing and Improvisational Comedy at the historic Second City Training Center in Chicago. In our conversation, Danu talks about 4 years of touring the world with the live-action graphic novel show, The Intergalactic Nemesis. She talks about what a toll touring can take and yet how happy she is to have been able to do that before covid. I really loved the part where she told me about when The Intergalactic Nemesis was featured on CONAN. It was so wild that she got to perform with Conan O'Brien! In our chat, we talk about Danu's natural inclination toward entertaining. Danu tells me all about the path she has found in voice-over work and how much she enjoys the creative collaborations she has found in that industry. Danu also loves acting in film and TV and she is just SO DARN GOOD at it. Unlike many of my other guests on this podcast, I have gotten to see Danu perform onstage many times and she is always wonderful to watch! This is likely due to her dedication to her craft. Listen in as she talks about the work she has put in (and continues to do) to make sure she brings her best to the table. Danu is a hard worker and a kind soul and we had so much fun catching up. And you know what? Danu can be heard all over the country voicing brands such as Staples, Lowe's, Burlington Coat Factory, World Market and many more. Listen for her while you are Christmas shopping! Support Danu by watching her act on TV and in movies! Danu can be heard as the character “Toth” in the animated series, “Nomad of Nowhere" streaming on Amazon (added it to my list CHECK). Wendi and Dfernando's sixteenth episode and their guest interview is Tony Award nominated/CableACE Award-winning actress, comedian and writer Denny Dillon.  Denny Dillon began her professional career six weeks after moving to NYC in 1973 when she made her Broadway debut as Agnes in the highly anticipated 1974 Broadway revival of GYPSY, starring Angela Lansbury.  She quickly followed it with the 1975 Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder's THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH.  Roles she created on Broadway were in the 1980 Broadway stage adaptation of HAROLD AND MAUDE and Mickey in the 1983 hit Gershwin musical MY ONE AND ONLY, starring Tommy Tune and Twiggy, for which she received a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.  She later appeared as a replacement cast member in the 2003 Broadway play ENCHANTED APRIL.Dillon famously made her big screen debut in the 1977 classic SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, playing Doreen, who asks John Travolta's character Tony if she can wipe his forehead for him.  Other films followed, such as GARBO TALKS, SEVEN MINUTES IN HEAVEN, UNITED 93, RACING DAYLIGHT and as the voice of Glyptodon in the classic animated feature ICE AGE.  In 2021 she can be seen in Academy Award-winner Halle Berry's directorial debut BRUISED as Crazy Esther.  Other notable career highlight was being a member of the first replacement cast on NBC's SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (Season 6 - 1980-1981) during the troubled tenure of producer Jean Doumanian.  Sidebar: Denny Dillon was the shortest cast member in SNL history at 4'11".On television, Dillon went on to win a CableACE Award for her role as series regular Toby Pedalbee, the abusive yet loyal assistant on the long-running HBO sitcom DREAM ON and has appeared on several classic series like DESIGNING WOMEN, NIGHT COURT, MIAMI VICE, FAME and NASH BRIDGES and as a series regular, she appeared on WOMEN IN PRISON and DR. SCIENCE.  Most recently she was seen on LAW & ORDER: SVU, FX's LOUIE and HBO's THE OUTSIDER.  She continues acting in regional theatre and was seen in the musical TRIUMPH OF LOVE at Center Stage in Baltimore, Tennessee Williams' plays 8 BY TENN at the Hartford Stage, as Beatrice in the World Premiere of Tom Dudzick's DON'T TALK TO THE ACTORS at Studio Arena Theatre in Buffalo, and as Berthe in the comedy farce BOEING-BOEING at Hartford Stage. In 2010, she was part of a new musical in "development" of Roald Dahl's JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH at Goodspeed Musicals in Connecticut, directed by acclaimed director/choreographer Graciela Daniele.  Dillon has headed the IMPROV NATION, based in the Hudson Valley (New York state), since 2006, and is an Artist in-Residence at SUNY Ulster where she teaches improvisation and is on the faculty of Primary Stages. She's currently writing a book of memoirs and shares her life with partner Barbara Smiley.  And on the weekly RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT, the fabulous Debi Mazar, some words for Meghan McCain, the Criterion Collection release of Robert Zemeckis' 1978 film I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND, and the curse of that TikTok peach cobbler.  Wendi and Dfernando also bring up TV sitcom theme songs and do a little singing themselves.  Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Denny DillonRemember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com
