Dr. Chuck Herring | John 13:1-20In chapters 13 through 17, Jesus turned from apublic ministry to those who rejected Him to aprivate ministry to those who received Him.These chapters cover approximately 24-36hours of Jesus' ministry.John 13:1… Now before the Feast of thePassover, Jesus knowing that His hour hadcome that He would depart out of this worldto the Father, having loved His own who werein the world, He loved them to the end.Jesus knew that “His hour was come.” It wastime for the Lord Jesus to be glorified throughHis death, resurrection, and ascension. John, more than any other gospel writer, emphasizedthe fact that Jesus lived on a “heavenlytimetable” as He did the Father's will. BecauseJesus knew who He was, where He came from,1November 3, 2024CFBC…“Discovering Jesus” (John's Gospel)what He had, and where He was going, He wascomplete master of the situation.1“He loved them to the end”— This means thatHis love for them was perfect and complete.Paul described the Lord's love for those whoreceive Him by faith…Ephesians 3:17–19… so that Christ may dwellin your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may beable to comprehend with all the saints what isthe breadth and length and height and depth,19 and to know the love of Christ whichsurpasses knowledge, that you may be filledup to all the fullness of God.Interview Mike and Allison Amick—Allison, what would you consider to be your mostselfless act of serving the Lord and others?Mike, what are two or three blessings you havereceived as a result of serving the Lord byserving others?1 Warren W. Jim served as the 13th administrator of NASA and spearheaded the launch of the Artemis program. During Jim's watch, the US also returned to launching its own astronauts to orbit from US soil (with SpaceX). Jim's bio will be familiar to most space buffs in Payload and Pathfinder's audience, so in our convo, we dig a bit deeper on his backstory, get a status report on Artemis, and take a closer look at his current roles in the commercial space ecosystem.Today's episode is brought to you by Altek Space, a custom manufacturer of essential parts and components for rockets and satellites.*SNEAK PEEK*Serving as a US Navy aviator; landing on aircraft carriers; and TOP GUN…real life vs. the movieJim's involvement in the Rocket Racing League and his time at the helm of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and PlanetariumServing in the US House as a representative of the 1st District of Oklahoma (and his HASC and SST committee membership)Working with an office of “space knuckleheads”—Jim uses that term endearingly—and honing his aerospace policy chops while on Capitol HillWhy going to the Moon vs. going to Mars was once an either-or, partisan debate on the HillJim's time leading NASA, architecting the Artemis program, andHis post-NASA space involvement (which includes advisory or trustee roles with Voyager, Viasat, Phase Four, The Aerospace Corporation, Firefly, and Acorn Growth Companies)This is our longest show to date and for good reason. The Scripture: Luke 2:39–52 [39] And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. [40] And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God wasupon him. [41] Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year atthe Feast of the Passover. [42] And when he was twelve yearsold, they went up according to custom. [43] And when the feastwas ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behindin Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, [44] but supposinghim to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then theybegan to search for him among their relatives andacquaintances, [45] and when they did not find him, theyreturned to Jerusalem, searching for him. [46] After three daysthey found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. [47] And all whoheard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.[48] And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. Andhis mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so?Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in greatdistress." [49] And he said to them, "Why were you lookingfor me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father'shouse?" [50] And they did not understand the saying that hespoke to them. [51] And he went down with them and came toNazareth and was submissive to them. And his mothertreasured up all these things in her heart.[52] And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature andin favor with God and man. (ESV) published Aug 28, 2022, 4:30 PM

Even in the gender in the NIV “Blessed is the man” is the translation. So I am applying this to Fathers in particular today believing that wherever this is taken to heart stronger marriages and families will follow. That leads to stronger neighborhoods, cities, and nations. That leads to a better world. But more likely it leads to a stronger church in a dark world.Psalm 127 is written by either David to Solomon or by Solomon himself. Beloved is possibly a covert reference (concealed signature) to Solomon's God-given name of Jedidiah since they use the same root word. (2 Sam 12:25) The point is that this is a special work by a father and what he does in life.Ironically, much of Solomon's wisdom was lost on him.His building (literally and figuratively) became reckless,His kingdom a ruin, andHis marriages a disastrous denial of God.Warning: If we're not careful, we'll also have wisdom we ignore in life.Bottom Line: Hard work + Discipline + Divine Support = Fruitfulness that will last; “For apart from me you can do nothing.” -JesusI. THE FOUNDATION FOR A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY (127:1-2) (WILLMINGTON)A. What is necessary (1-2)The home must be built by the Lord. The home must be protected by the Lord.B. What is needless (3-5): The breadwinners need not burn the candle at both ends and be overly anxious, for God will supply rest and what we need.II. THE FRUITS FROM A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY (127:3-5) (WILLMINGTON): ChildrenA. The parents will be honored (3-4): Children are a reward and like sharp arrows.B. The parents will be helped (5): They will not be ashamed in front of their accusers. (At the city gates i.e. in court (public?))I. Labor is in vain without God's providence. (1-2) (BKC)II. Children are evidence of God's providence. (3-5) (BKC)“Children are some of the Lord's providential blessings. They are a reward from the LORD. Sons help defend the family for they are like weapons (arrows) in the hand of a mighty man. Sons are capable of defending the family in civil cases (at the gate civil cases were discussed and decided). The images of arrows and of defense “in the gate” was natural for a nation endangered from without and within.” BKCCSB Study BibleHouse = physical building and/or home, family connectingFood = hard work + favorable conditions + favor of GodChildren = uncertainty of childbirth + favor of GodBottom Line: Hard work + Discipline + Divine Support = Fruitfulness that will last; “For apart from me you can do nothing.” -JesusTHE FOUNDATION FOR A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY (127:1-2) (WILLMINGTON)I. Prosperity and security are not ultimately your accomplishments but God's gifts. (127:1) (Keller)“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.”Psalms 127:1 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-127-13 Universal Preoccupations of humanity:Building (Creator, producer)SecurityRaising a familyWhat are we spending our time building? Will it last? Will we wish we had worked more on our death bed?Watchmen (security)Uvalde shooting???? Are our children safe? Can we sleep at night?“In vain” ≠ vanities in Ecclesiastes, though still sweeping“Anxious toil” or “toiling” of late comes from same root word used in Gen 3:16 where Eve hears from God some of the consequences of her actions.Hard work + Discipline + Divine Support = Fruitfulness that will lastII. So overwork, worry and strain are a) foolish, and b) wrong. (127:2) If you know that the one who loves youunfailingly is in complete charge of history, you will be able to sleep well (verse 2).(Keller)“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”Psalms 127:2 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-127-2Work still harder is no answer to worldly success: it can be a fresh enslavement, in fact. Not simply that projects fail (some bread) but that they lead nowhere.“In vain you rise early and stay up late, …discipline and diligence isn't enough (Sorry Jocko)Why? Because the LORD gives sleep zzzzzzzzz to his beloved—true rest and peace that allows you to sleep when the enemy is out there (today's war on children in general)Being anxious over food…Working long hours…Vain unless the LORD is in it.Trusting in the Lord leads to rest and peace because we're not carrying the full burden but recognizing that we cannot—but He can.Hard work + Discipline + Divine Suppor = Fruitful life in all that you doTransition: From here on, Solomon gives the alternative to our elaborate failures.THE FRUITS FROM A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY (127:3-5) (WILLMINGTON)III.-V. So too thriving, happy children are God's doing. (127:3-5) (Keller)“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”Psalms 127:3 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-127-3“Helicopter” parenting and over involvement in our children's lives, cannot ensure their health and happiness. (Keller)Unless the Lord enters their lives, all our watching is in vain. (Keller)Giving our children to God is the ONLY WAY we get to keep them. (Keller)If you know that the one who loves you unfailingly is in complete charge of IEStory, you will be able to sleep well. (Keller)And if you are overworked and over stressed, you are forgetting who God is. Jesus wait it most bluntly: “Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)What do parents worry about most? Their children's future. They are: a heritage from the Lord (he is the gracious ultimate source).Heritage = a person's unique source of family identity: the values, traditions, culture and artifacts handed down by previous generations.Repeated: a reward ( a good blessing) from him (ultimate source).Genesis 11 illustrates this Psalm:Man builds for glory and security to achieve is only a fiasco “in vain” whereasGod quietly gives to the obscure Torah a son whose blessings havre proliferated ever since.Wealth isn't the issue. An upstanding family is wealth and honor enough.IV.“Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth.”Psalms 127:4 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-127-4SimileHow are they a heritage and reward? Like arrows to an archer—warrior/protector/rescuer readying for battle.Full quiver of arrows represented prestige and protection in that day. (CSB)“Like arrows for a warrior, children were useful in the agricultural society. The man who had many children also enjoyed respect in the near eastern society.” (CSB)We're in a war. Every day.V.“Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.”Psalms 127:5 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-127-5Something he launches in the battle to defend and win the battle. Our battle isn't against flesh and blood (Ephesians 2) but against rulers and principalities beyond this world. Are we preparing our children for that??!Simile continues…Someone he launches into life to enter the fray (equipped??) on their own two feet.Assuming the Lord builds his house resting on the Lord,He will be blessedHis children will not be put to shame when they battle In courtIn warIn lifeBecause if they all with the Lord too (most raised this way will) then they'll have nothing to be ashamed of. Series: Colossians: Supreme!Title: “How to keep good things from becoming God things”Scripture: Colossians 3:1-4(Commentary helps listed at the end)Bottom line: We keep good things from becoming God things when we set our hearts and minds on things above—where Christ sits. That is when we live in light of eternity.Opening story:This week we move from warnings (we had 4 last week) to coaching. Paul is coaching them in the direction that they should go.Many of us had a coach growing up who was influential in our life. Through sport (or dance or some other extracurricular activity) we learned not only that sport but discipline, people skills, emotional skills and in some cases spiritual wisdom. As a coach for our high school ultimate team, I'm now learning things from the other side of this relationship. One thing I know: coaching is essential for growing up into maturity. This is true in every area of life—not just the spiritual.I've actually hired my first coach. I've had coaching in ministry before, but I've never actually hired someone to help me assess, diagnose, evaluate, strategize, and be held accountable to work through the things God is calling me to do. It's humbling because you have to face your current reality with someone with nothing to lose in being totally honest with you. But it's encouraging because that's exactly what we need in life.Parents, you're not just a disciplinarian. You're a coach too (among other things). You are there to teach, rebuke, correct and train in righteousness along with many other practical things in life. Do not take this lightly. And never stop learning. Leaders are learners. When we quit learning, we quit leading. So Paul coaches the Colossians, the Laodiceans, and, well, us if we're FAT Christians (F.A.T. = Faithful, Available, Teachable). And what do coaches do? They call their team to greater heights. They train and inspire. They call us from the warnings in practice to the calling for the game. They call us to victory! Paul calls us to victory in Christ, the hope of glory! But it's natural for a player to wrestle with the flesh and fight against the training and discipline and yearn for the easy road to glory and gain. This tension is what Paul aims to empower us to overcome.Paul is giving us the antidote(s) to a preoccupation withMaterialism: Wealth, possessionsNarcissism: Status, Achievements (professionally, academically, religiously)Hedonism: Sensuality, Pleasures, gratificationsA preoccupation with these good things making them God things leads to stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, depression, hopelessness, and the desire to just give up. Ever feel any of those? Well, if you have, you've made something temporary into something eternal that was never meant to be. This is a poisonous mindset. We need an antidote. The antidote to making these good things God things is orienting your whole life around Christ Jesus as your Lord and King.Outline:In light of who Christ is, what he's done and the warnings Paul has given, Paul calls/coaches the Christians in Colossae, Laodicea and beyond to:I. What should they do? Focus on Christ's priorities:Set your heart(s) (1)Feelings PassionsWillOn things aboveHeavenly agendaGod's agenda“Where Christ is” “Seated at the right hand of God” because he's your King'sSet your mind(s)—What you think about and aim for (2)On things above (see above)Not on earthly things, like:Possessions, wealthAchievementsStatusPleasures, gratificationsReligiosityII. Why do it? Because of who they are in light of Christ since they believed:Because you died with Christ (3)Crucified with Christ (CROSS)JustifiedFreed from the penalty of sinBecause you are hidden with (in) ChristConcealed (BURIED)Identifying with (BAPTIZED)Safe (Show YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/LNZ-ZBsPpgk)Because you will be glorified with ChristChrist is your lifeHe'll appear here one dayYou'll then appear there on that dayConclusionBottom line: We keep good things from becoming God things when we set our hearts and minds on things above—where Christ sits. That is when we live in light of eternity.Place our piece of paper with our name on it into our bible. The antidotes to materialism, narcissism, and hedonism is simply centering and focusing your life in Christ and his priorities. When you rest in Christ and what he's doing, you'llServe others instead of seek to be served.Deny yourself and give instead of pursuing wealth at all costs.Live simply and give the rest away. And you'll do all of this in Christ's name and by his power for his glory. And when he appears here you'll appear there with him hearing, “Well done my good and faithful servant. Enter into your glory.”PrayLord's Supper, 1 Corinthians 11:17-32OtherPace Outline: Title: Our faith in Christ raises us to new life (3:1-4)Through our identity in and union with Christ, Jesus transforms our pursuits, perspective, and purpose in life by resetting our trajectory heavenward toward Christ Jesus. (Name on paper in the Bible illustration)I. Jesus redirects life's pursuits. (1) …from our worldly efforts for happiness to his heavenly presence in our hearts bearing the fruit of the Spirit. To redirect our pursuits requires us to recalibrate our hearts desires. How do my pursuits align with Christ's kingdom, Christ's mission, and building Christ's church? Our hearts, captivated by Christ, will more naturally help us filter and evaluate our pursuits.“Ultimately, our union with Christ should stir our affections for him and redirect our pursuits.” P. 79II. Jesus reshapes life's perspective. (2)…through the nenewing of our minds. Reshaping/renewing the mind is foundational to transformation. This is necessary for several reasons:Primarily, it “enables us to fulfill the great commission by loving God with our entire selves, including our minds.”“Also essentially because it protects us from the world's influence as the world attempts to conform our thinking to its pattern. Through the constant renewing of our minds, we can experience God's transformation in our lives (Rom 12:2).”FruitThis renewed perspective also guards our hearts and minds with God's peace as we dwell on things above.Phil 4:6-8Prov 4:23Also, by focusing on what's eternal (above), we can renew our hope in the midst of temporary afflictions/trials.2 Cor 4:16-18Rom 8:6-81 Cor 2:16Therefore, Jesus redirects our life pursuits and reshapes our life perspective as we set our hearts and minds on things above—namely Christ and his priorities.III. Jesus redefines life's purpose. (3-4) Our identity in and union with Christ also redefines our purpose. So why are we to set our hearts and minds on things above? For you (we) died andYour (our) life is hidden in Christ. The FlowEstablished past… “You (we) died” (crucified; justified; freed from penalty of sin) toThe present… “Your (our) life is hidden” (buried; sanctified; freed from the power of sin) show videohere (https://youtu.be/LNZ-ZBsPpgk) toThe future… “You (we) also will appear” (resurrected; glorified; freed from the presence of sin)“We died with Christ, we were buried with Christ, and we have been raised with Christ and therefore will appear with Christ in glory.” -D MooHow does this present reality (Identity and union with Christ) reset our trajectory towards things above (eternity):Our hidden life in Christ:Signifies our personal relationship with Christ,Affirms our security of our salvation in Christ, andCertifies our glorious inheritance with Christ. Therefore, bothOur “hidden” life in Christ, andHis indwelling “life” in us will be fully revealed when he returns “in glory” (1 John 3:2)This future fulfillment of our current identity in Christ should redefine our purpose in multiple ways:The glory of Christ's return reminds us of there temporal nature of this world and the fleeting value of it's possessions and pleasures. Therefore, we shouldn't be deceived by vain pursuit of earthly wealth, achievement, status, or gratification. The certainty of Christ's return gives us assurance that allows us to live with confidence in a world filled with uncertainty. Therefore we can endure hardships and persevere by fixing our hope on the grace and glory tha twill be revealed at the coming of Christ. The imminence of Christ's return should motivate us to live with urgency.Christ brings hope and Christ brings judgmentThereforeWe anticipate eternal union with Christ butWe work urgently to lead others to come with usThereforeWe live as ambassadors of Christ asWe rest in the comfort of our eternal future with ChristThereforeWe celebrate his presenceHere and nowHereafter, but alsoWe live as citizens of heaven full ofHopeUrgency“…we should collectively seek and set our minds on things above that we share in common with other believers. We should live with holy anticipation of Christ's return as we celebrate our new life in him and devote ourselves to the mission of seeing others liberated from the bondage of sin to inherit the eternal promises of King Jesus!” P. 82Hughes' outline: Title: “The Seeking of Things Above”I. Instructions (Coaching) regarding our fullness (1-2)Seek is present (continuous) imperative (commanded). Therefore, a continuous command. How do we seek Christ?Kind of like you should seek your future husband or wife (not just a date):Pray for opportunities to be togetherGet to know them through conversationTreat them as you wish to be treated; love as you want to be loved (lust ≠ love)Serve themBe honest with themListening >> talking, but to talk is to be vulnerable, approachable; conversation should be like tennis. Return a returnable ball. Too many people just answer the other person's question. They rarely realize it's their turn to return with a question. We have an amazing lack of interest in other people. Love inquires. Love listens. Love cares enough to inquire and listen.Write and read love lettersPray togetherMake disciples togetherAffirm God's gifts in each otherWorship togetherIntroduce them to your parents and ask for their blessing before pursuing the relationship further (both guys and gals here)II. The reasoning behind Paul's instructions (Coaching). (3-4) There are at least 2:Past…“You died…”“Life hidden…” imperfect = ongoing effects of dying/continuous dying to self because we are in Christ and Christ is in God, we are inseparable and securePaper with my name on it in the Bible = “in Christ”Christ's fullness fills our emptiness apart from ChristFuture…When he appears hereWe will appear there (in glory); We'll join him there in our new bodies Phil 3:20-21Romans 8:29-31 (not written for unbelievers)Therefore, “Let's covenant to not fix our thoughts on the material and immaterial things of this world, but to 1) pray for minds set on things above, to 2) hold the scriptures close to our hearts, to 3) reflect on our past history, and to 4) rejoice in anticipation of our future in him.” P. 299Application:Pray for minds set on things above,Hold the scriptures close to our hearts,Reflect on our past history, andRejoice in anticipation of our future in Christ.OTHER ILLUSTRATIONS:Print this and cut this out to share with your people to insert into their own bibles.———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-Name:Understanding that, as a Christian, you are “in” Christ Jesus revolutionizes how you see yourself, your self-image, your identity and how you understand your value to God.Write your name on a piece of paper. Take hold of your Bible to represent Christ. (John 1:1-18) Place the paper in the book and close it. You are in Christ. Where the book goes you go. Where the paper goes he goes. You are not part of the book, but you are now identified totally with the book.Paul uses the expression, “In Christ Jesus”, over and over again. I have realised that your Purpose doesn't grow on trees, nor is it buried somewhere for you to go on a treasure hunt and find it and dig it out for yourself. Your Purpose, you find by discovery. And to discover it, you have to try out different things. The more different things you try out, the more you realise what you don't like or what is not your Purpose. And somewhere, you hit upon things that seem like your Purpose. So you engage in that, and you stay with it for a long time, or you say, no, there's a slight variation on this that I want to do, and then that becomes your Purpose. How do you start as high as possible? Because the lower you start, the longer it takes to get to that high benchmark. And sometimes, you can never get there because the lower you start, the more you get stuck at that level. Quality doesn't scale. You have to set the quality bar from day one and then scale on quantity without diluting quality, but trying to scale quality is almost an impossible task.In taking the idea to execution- You can't execute it all yourself. So your real skill lies in identifying great people, setting the vision and a high bar. You have to hire a crack team of people and be uncompromising about it.

Presence, Word, and Roadwork(Isa. 40:3–8)How do God’s people receive comfort? (Isa. 40:1–8.)_____________________________________________________An unnamed herald announces that God is coming to reveal His glory(Isa. 40:3–5). Another voice proclaims that although humans are transientlike foliage, “the word of our God will stand forever” (Isa. 40:8, NRSV).After the exile, God’s people gain back what they had received at MountSinai and then rejected all throughout their apostasy, for which they werepunished: God’s presence and His Word. These are the basic ingredients ofGod’s covenant with Israel, which were enshrined at His sanctuary in theirmidst (Exod. 25:8, 16). Because they had violated His Word, God had aban-doned His temple (Ezekiel 9–11), but He is coming back. His presence andHis eternally dependable Word bring comfort, deliverance, and hope. What preparation is necessary for the Lord’s coming? (Isa. 40:3–5.)_____________________________________________________It is not fitting for a king to be jolted by a rough road. So, his com-ing is preceded by roadwork. The more so for the King of kings! Hiscoming, apparently from the east, where He has been in exile with Hispeople as a sanctuary to them (Ezek. 11:16), would require majorrearrangement of the terrain. Construction of a literal, level super-highway through the rugged hills east of Jerusalem would be daunting, even with dynamite and bulldozers. God is the only One who can dothe work; it is He who turns “the rough places into level ground” (Isa.42:16, NRSV). But He doesn’t need a literal road for transportationbecause He has an airborne chariot of cherubim (Ezekiel 1, 9–11).The New Testament explicitly applies Isaiah’s prophecy to the spiritual roadwork accomplished through the preaching of John the Baptist(Matt. 3:3). His message was: “ ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven hascome near’ ” (Matt. 3:2, NRSV) and the baptism that he performed was“of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mark 1:4, NRSV). So, theroadwork was repentance, willingness to turn away from sin, in orderto receive the comfort of God’s forgiveness and presence.Jeremiah 31:31–34 proclaimed the same spiritual message in plenty oftime for the exiles of Judah to understand the spiritual nature of roadwork forGod. In this passage, the Lord promises those who are willing a fresh start:a “new covenant” in which He puts His law in their hearts and pledges to betheir God. They know Him and His character, because He has forgiven them.Read carefully Isaiah 40:6–8. What hope can you, who fade awayas does the grass, derive from what these verses say? In whatshould they warn us against putting our trust?

Yuhu. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,I want to share with you about the blessedness of forgiveness and of trust in Godduring this difficult season. We are navigating unprecedented times, not only withthe COVID-19 virus but with all the unrest that we are seeing in our nation. Theprotests over the appalling death of George Floyd and racial injustice haveunfortunately spilled over to rioting and looting. They no longer have anysemblance of the rightful exercise of the privilege that we have in our country toassemble and protest peacefully. In times like these, where can we find peace?Certainly not from the world! Our peace is not based on external things, but comes from having a rightrelationship with God. Psalm 32 is a great source of comfort for us.In the first part of this psalm, we read about the blessedness of being forgiven: 1 How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! 3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah. 6 Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him. 7 You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. We can confess our sins to God instead of hiding and bearing guilt. Through thefree gift of salvation in Christ, we can receive God’s forgiveness of our sins. Wefind freedom, victory, and deliverance from God. That is true blessedness.Out of that blessedness of being forgiven by God and being made right with Him,we can now discern and receive His instruction, guidance, and counsel. In thesecond part of Psalm 32, starting with verse 8, God says: 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. 9 Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding, Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, Otherwise they will not come near to you. 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, But he who trusts in the Lord, lovingkindness shall surround him. 11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones; And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.I don’t know what your current situation is or how you are feeling. Maybe you areexperiencing fear because of our current circumstances and the uncertainty of thefuture. No matter what your situation is, you can have the peace of God thatsurpasses all human understanding. That’s because you have His forgiveness andHis assurance that He will show you the way through each and every difficulty. Youcan rest securely and safely in Him and rejoice!“Dear Lord, thank you that we can confess our sins to you and be forgiven. Thankyou that when we do not hide our sins from you, we will be able to hear and receiveyour instruction, teaching, and guidance for every issue in our lives. In Jesus’name, amen.”

Blessed for God’s Glory Psalm 67 January 19, 2020 – 75th Anniversary I. Introduction:A. What we have heard today is God’s grace, God’s blessing, God’s face shining, and God’s divine favor on this church. We also heard about God’s blessing goingthrough this church to people both locally and all over the world. We also haveblessed Him today for these blessings by praising Him as the hero of the story ofMVC over 75 years!B. This really is a micro picture of what God is doing in the world.1. It all starts with God, a God who has a heart to bless!2. Then God pours out His divine favor upon His people3. Then God’s blessed people take that blessing and bless others with it.4. Finally, those who have experienced God’s blessing return blessing/praiseback to God for His goodness to them.C. This has been God’s plan from the beginning1. Turn to Genesis 12:2 - God lays out his plan for Abraham. Many considerthis the foundational passage in Scripture regarding God’s plan in this world.I happen to be one of those.2. Read v2...3c3. God promises to bless Abraham by making him a great nation and his namegreat!4. Then tells him to be a blessing to others (2d) followed by the fact that God isgoing to bless the whole world through him (3c)D. As the story goes on1. The great nation God made of Abraham was Israel and they became His ownpossession among all the peoples of the earth, who were to be His priests andHis representatives, to the rest of the world. 2. Then Jesus came, who is the seed of Abraham through whom God wouldbless all the world, and God so loved the world that He gave his only Son,Jesus, so that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but haveeverlasting life.3. Then in Matthew 28 Jesus commissions the church, the seed of Abrahamthrough their relationship with Jesus the seed, those who have been blessedwith every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies, to go and make disciples of allthe nations!E. In Revelation 7 we see the fulfillment of this plan of God’s blessing going fullcircle, as peoples from every nation bless God in worship for His blessings uponthem. Listen as I read Revelation 7:9-12.• Now turn to Psalm 67 we see this same pattern of blessing laid outII. Psalm 67A. We will see here the God of blessings, blesses His own people Israel so that Hisblessing, His salvation, might go through them to all the world and in turn peoplefrom all the world would fear and bless/praise GodB. As I read note that “us” refers to God’s people Israel and that the “peoples” and“nations” refer to the rest of the world.1. Also, note at the start of this Psalm is a prayer for blessing and in that prayerhe states the reason why he is asking for this blessing upon them. At the endof this psalm, he states the reason why God blesses His people.2. ReadC. Point out1. Purpose for praying for blessing in v1-2a) We see a prayer for blessing does not have to be a selfish self-servingprayer if it is prayed with the right motive!2. God’s purpose for blessing in v6-7D. In between these two, we see the prayer for all the peoples of the world to praiseand bless God!• So how does that apply to us at MVC?III. Challenge A. God has blessed MVC so we can be a blessing to those around us and even to theend of the earth. We have been blessed to bless!1. In the last five years alone, MVC has contributed $928,450 in support ofmissionaries and mission work as we have supported 41 missionaries in avariety of ministries to various different kinds of people in different parts ofthe world.B. So my prayer now is that God would even bless us more so we can be a greaterblessing to each other, to the communities we live in and around the world. Ipersonally desire this in three ways:1. I would love to see God’s blessings on our offerings so we do not have tostruggle as a church just to make ends meet and rob from Peter to pay Paul. But that we not only meet budget but exceed it so we can pay off ourmortgage and fix what remains in this building to be fixed so we can poureven greater blessings beyond these walls on those who need and to furtherGod’s kingdom agenda!2. On the personal level take the blessing God has built into each one of ourspiritual lives and pour that blessing upon someone else! That is calleddiscipleship – take what God has given you and give it to someone else.a) We all need people who can help us grow closer to Jesus and we allknow people whom we can help grow closer to Jesus3. I long to see MVC make a greater impact upon the world right around us herein the Chicago area by each one of us seeing ourselves as missionaries, witnesses, ambassadors, ministers who impact the part of the world we live inand the relationships we have with people both inside and outside the church. We want to be world changers!a) You and I may not change “the world” but each one of us can change“someone’s world,” - one person at a time, one step at a time, oneconversation at a time, one act of kindness at a time. C. My God bless MVC to be a blessing!IV. Prayer – Ron Benton
One of the nicest blokes you will meet in the industry...that's how Dave Padden was described to me.And, yep, they were right. I had an absolute ripping time interviewing Dave and finding out about such things as:How Akasha, sorta, kinda, not really, started out as a Gypsy brewing operation; How Craft Brewing is the passion he never thought he would find (wifey excepted); Why he chose the random suburb of 5 Dock to set up shop; What he found out the back of a Kansas City petrol station; andHis love for big hair rock!A great fun interview that I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did recording it.https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealerhttps://www.akashabrewing.com.au/
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.I'm finishing up my PhD here at the University of Regina.Whoo Boy, that's a big question.Um, let's just say it's asystems theory, I guess would be theone word or two words. Yeah, so systems theory. On systems theory is applied to interactive hardware, specifically stuff to do with, like Arduino and DIY hobbyist electronics. How's that being evaluated? Well, it's a sort of theoretical field. So essentially, I'm taking some really really old math from the 1940s.And trying to bring it up to speed with other contemporary ideas, especially pertaining to the maker movement was actuallyYeah, no worries. Um, well, back in the 1940s, there was this movement to take all of the different disciplines and unite them under one banner, and they were calling that general systems theory. And so the idea is that you can takethe grand unified, yeah, the grand unified theory.A kind of in a way yeah, that well, the grand unified theory in physics, I actually have a bachelor's degree in physics. The grand unified theory of physics was trying to unite quantum mechanics in general relativity. Now, General systems theory was actually founded by a biologist by the name of Ludwig von Berg handling fee andHis idea was thatyou could potentially describe biological, physical, chemical electronic systems all using the same type of language. And so back in the 90s Yeah, well, so back in the 1940s and 1950s they started fiddling around that this ideait's exactly that.Yeah, it's uh, it's uhhuh, yeah, well in its kind of, so you have in computer science, which my PhD work is, that's the what will be my PhD here in a few months. But in computer science, you have kind of like two disparate sorts of fields, looking at how people and non computer systems interact with computers and those two are cybernetics and human computer interaction. And human computer interaction that looks at interactions with machines as almost human conversations. But cybernetics takes the other approach and it says, Okay, well let's look at humans as if they work computers and systems theory kind of bridges. Systems Theory kind of bridges the gap between the two by saying no, let's look at everything like it's a system.I am trying toyou yeah, essentially take that third stance that if we look at everything as if it's a system, meet in the middle, somewhere between machine and man, then we can potentiallybreak through with all sorts of, well, essentially new philosophies and new ways of looking and designing things.Mmhmm.Yeah, that's no that's, that's exactly it.Exactly. And I've never been one to, like just take a very specific problem and say, I'm going to learn more about this very specific problem and then come up with a superficial answer. I've always been someone who has to drill down to the very core of what makes a discipline tick and then work from there, which is a huge pain in the ass for me, butI'm not quite sure exactly what do you mean by that? No, that's okay. That's okay.No worries. I know I think I think I understand what you're saying. The way that we look at things. Yeah, I think well, that's the most important thing or not the most important thing but that isn't an important thing isThat first you get your definition straight. And one of the problems with systems theory is you have sort of two different areas of systems. There you have the early systems theorists which their work was in trying to define systems using mathematical models like using set theory, and then the later system, and then the later systems theorists are more like experimentalists, and the experimentalists, they take a look at inputs and outputs, and then reverse engineer the system, kind of the black box method of engineering. And so my work fits in sort of in between them, trying to bridge the gap. And that involves being very careful about definitions, because there's a misunderstanding between what we meant by systems and what we know mean by systems, at least in my estimation.Nope, this is a this isThis is all just set theory. So it's not even. There's like no programming involved in that. And, yep.How does this relate to that? Well, my actual PhD, has very little programming in it. So the PhD thesisother than the demonstrator here in there, doesn't use a whole lot of Python. However, I use Python a lot in what I do mostly, which is teaching. I spend most of my time as a session, a lecturer and teaching three, three different classes this semester. And then I have to over this. Yeah, and I use Python a lot for that.Currently.Yeah, why? Yeah, why don'tteaching a it's all CS classes currently and teaching an 800 level class let's graduate students, some teaching a grad level course currently on,on what is it interactive hardware, which doesn't really involve much Python, I'm teaching to undergraduate courses as well. One of those is interactive simulation methods, which is all done in Python. And then I'm teaching another course on Unity game development, which of course is done in C sharp butBut currently, I'm working on developing a couple of new courses, one on information theory and another one on data acquisition and analysis from the internet. And both of those areboth of those are using Python. Those are both grad classes that I'm teaching over the summer.Information about information. I like it. That's meta.Yeah, information theory. Well, information theory is kind of this old branch of science that originated with Claude Shannon, back in the 1940s 1950s,when they were starting to think about, rather than the universe as an analog place. They're certainly think about the universe as a digital place as opposed to the way that we've traditionally thought of it. And so the idea behind information theory is that pretty much everything can be described in terms of yes or no questions. So, for example, you can ask the question.Yeah, well, every question. So the definition of information is the resolution of uncertainty. And the way that we resolve uncertainty is by asking yes or no question andYou can ask question like, Is it warm out today? And the answer would be yes or no. But of course, implicit within that you have to define Well, what do you mean by warm? And so you'd have to get specific. Is it greater than 30 degrees Celsius today? And then yeah, and then the question the answer that question would be today, no, here in Canada, or here in Regina know, so it wouldn't be warm today. So that's the answer of yes or no question. And of course, when you have a yesMmhmm.I'm drawing a blank thereIknow I'm I'm mostlymost of my programming is done in Python so i i think i think you're right though I think you're I think you're on the right track though.I physics background Yeah. Oh well in Math Math was my minorYeah, you can see thathuh? Yeah, math isyeahmental math is math is the language by which themath is the language by which the universe is governed. And physics is the result of that governments I suppose you could say.Mmhmm yeah, that would beyou probably thinking ofGosh, what's his name?throughout Ragnar rum which means calculating space, trying to think of his nameThat sounds kind of likehmmwellwell the concept of information sorry the concept of information actually in, ininLike Shannon's Shannon, Shannon systems that aren't sorry Stratton's information theoryis almost a physical rather than in a subjective thing, you can measure it.Well, no, I don't necessarily say that. I mean, there are certain things thatyou want to get metaphysical about things. There are certain conclusions that you can draw, I suppose, from thinking about the universe in terms of both information and systems. And if you want to take that extrapolate that and apply that towards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Back when I was still working in the industry, and the numbers of beer bloggers, reviewers and podcasters were much lower than what we have today, there was this blonde haired surfie looking dude that used top pop up on the interwebs here and there, going buy the name The Beer Pilgrim. Today's interview is with Stephen Garten. He is doing something really unique with his company Charity Charge. With his company, they produce a card that steers 1 percent of all purchases to nonprofits of the customer's choice. The Charity Charge MasterCard issued by Commerce Bank is not limited to a single organization or cause — as with “affinity” cards — and there is no donation-processing fee, so recipient groups get the entire cash-back bonus. Consumers choose target charities when they sign up for the card and can change them at any time.According to Garten, he just wants to make doing good part of the routine of everyday living and i'll say he's doing a great job at it. Currently, in the United States of America, 200 million credit cardholders are better at accruing rewards than spending them. It has been reported that people are sitting on a whopping $16 billion worth of unused rewards points. Apparently, what motivates us to get cards in the first place isn’t the extras on offer. It’s the simple convenience of having plastic when we need it. If you’re someone who doesn’t care much about rewards, you might consider Charity Charge. In our Interview, we discuss:How Stephen got his start in EntrepreneurshipThe origins of Charity ChargeWhy he is so purpose filled ANDHis plans to make the world a better placeResources Mentioned In The EpisodeCharity Charge: https://www.charitycharge.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephengarten/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
