Tim Johnson of Barrel Theory (https://barreltheory.com) in St. Paul, Minnesota, started brewing progressive styles of beer—hazy IPA, fruit beers, barrel-aged stouts, and more—out of necessity. As a beer lover and beer trader, it made sense to try his hand at these things he would trade for, both for the creative thrill of pursuing excellence in these styles, but also for more pragmatic reasons—to have things to trade. Today, Johnson still loves tasting the wide breadth of beer out there, and he remains active in trading beer with brewer friends. Now, however, he's more focused on his own brewing—mastering hazy IPA, tart fruit beers, and barrel-aged stouts—and he's not afraid to let you know that he loves those styles. In this episode, he discusses: blending and co-pitching yeast in hazy IPAs designing double and triple hazy IPAs to taste great at a variety of temperatures balancing base malts for flavor and color adjusting water for the perfect hazy IPA profile using advanced hop products alongside T-90 pellets choosing the right time and place for certain hop additions building hazy IPAs that make you want to take another sip taking advantage of the “Infinity Gauntlet” of hops pushing hop saturation while still controlling hop burn using coconut cream to build richness in fruited sours And more. It's a long one for a change, folks, but there's much to talk about heading into Halloween Havoc 1993! There's another beer from Seven Bro7hers to talk about too, the "Juicy IPA" Follw the show: @onemansmeatpod on Twitter.
I met Anika Sawni at the Unstoppable Women's Conference in October of 2023, where she was an inspiring keynote speaker - in what I learned in this podcast was her very first keynote! She'd recently been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and I was captivated by her talk and her brand and market and culture-changing opportunity. At the conference, I was able to sample Gruvi's Juicy IPA, Rose, and Dry Secco - and I loved them all! And - none of them have any alcohol! Whaat?! Anika joined me for her first in-person podcast recording session during the Christmas season, and I'm happy to share it as our first episode of Season 4 of The LoCo Experience!Anika was in her fourth year of university in Montreal when the seeds for Grüvi were sowed. After a healthy lifestyle in her earlier years, she'd drifted into binge drinking (like most of her friends) during her undergraduate, but gave up alcohol when she saw it impacting her mood and performance, and threatened her acceptance at medical school. She was on a neurosurgery path, but when that path was disrupted - she opted out of medical school and pitched the idea of a cool, countercultural - and non-alcoholic special times beverage to her brother Niki. Niki had gained strong experience in business and finance at Salesforce, but had an entrepreneurial itch to scratch too, and soon after, Gruvi was born. Finding their path to revenue largely blocked in their native Canada, the pair soon moved themselves, their parents (out of retirement), and shortly thereafter, Anika's boyfriend! - to Denver, Colorado - epicenter of tasty beers and healthy lifestyles in the American West - to work on Gruvi. This is the story of a young company making its' mark with fresh and tasty and low-calorie and alcohol-free beverages, and the young lady's vision that started it all. It's a Gruvi episode, and I hope you'll enjoy, as I did, my conversation with Anika Sawni. Episode Sponsor: InMotion, providing next-day delivery for local businesses. In episode 35 we take a hard look at the explosion of Clubhouse, how it might be a sign of the times and a sign of the top. Also what impact the tech market has on bitcoin and what impact bitcoin has on the tech market. Is one a leading indicator of the other. Is bitcoin a leading and a lagging indicator of tech stocks? If so can you play that advantage to your own advantage as an investor? We also drink and rate beers (as we do) from Overtone with their "Weapons of Mass Consumption", 3Ravens and their "Juicy IPA" and Boaz continues his lent beer challenge. All this and more in today's Booze, Booms & Busts, episode 35

“They don’t make them like they used to!” Even though that’s something you might hear a parent or grandparent say, there is some truth to the phrase. Unfortunately, there are a lot of products out there that fail prematurely, and it causes us to spend more of our hard earned money. Planned obsolescence is a concept that we’ve heard as consumers, but what does it actually mean? And is all planned obsolescence a terrible thing? In this episode we cover many examples of it, including the notorious sector of consumer electronics. But then we also dive into how we can do our best to avoid spending more money, due to planned obsolescence. During this episode we enjoyed a Juicy IPA by Squatters Craft Beer- thanks Sam! And as we’ve ramped up the podcast with an additional Friday episode every week, we could really use your help to spread the word- let friends and family know about How to Money! Brady and Holli sit down with Adam & Katie Rozanas, local beer bloggers with big aspirations. They discuss how their journey began, from their early days as a couple in Minneapolis to their present-day home in Rogers.Between Katie's colorful can reads in a variety of accents, the group discusses the origin of their Instagram account which was born out of a difficult season in their life. Their desire to tell unique stories through written word led them to gigs with PorchDrinking (porchdrinking.com) and The Growler (growlermag.com).Time is spent discussing mental health and how those who suffer from depression and anxiety deal with the toxicity of social media. They mention how it's easy to forget that there are real people behind the accounts, but that the duo does a good job of sharing their failures as well as their successes. And it wouldn't be a 2020 podcast without discussing shelter-at-home, COVID-19, and George Floyd. There was a lot to cover. Adam and Katie dig deep into their thoughts on the current events, the backlash they received during the protests, and mused on their responsibility as social media influencers. The podcast finishes by asking what's next for their account. Fortside Brewing - Vancouver, WA Orange Whip, Hazy IPA, 5.9% ABV "No fruit was harmed in the making of this “Juicy” IPA. In fact, there is no “juice” in this IPA. Rather, it is a real IPA that benefits from heaps of El Dorado and Mosaic Hops which give it succulent aromas and flavors of orange, tangerine and grapefruit. We think this IPA predicates Juiciness! Uh, and if you don’t know, now you know." This week's episode of Business Over Beer comes to you live from Fortside Brewing. In this dual interview special, we first talk to Fortside beer ambassador Elliott Sutherland, who not only sells beer, but works to strengthen beer culture throughout the Pacific Northwest. Second we meet Nichole Davidson the Captain of the Taco Spaceship, and we learn about her taco genius and the amazing partnership between the beer business and the taco business. Guest Beer #1: Fortside Brewing - Vancouver, WA Palisade #2, Specialty Saison, 6.2% ABV, 22 IBU "Fortside's second Palisade series of beer is a mix of the earthly and the heavenly, of wild and rural places with holy and peaceful places. A showcase of two traditional and quite elegant Trappist yeast strains, heavy in both fruity esters and spicy phenolics, interplaying with the earthy, funky, and grounded notes of farmhouse yeasts and brettanomyces. A full and satiating mouthfeel is offered from the oak barrels used throughout fermentation and conditioning, along with some balancing tannic notes. Spicy, zesty, and unendingly complex." Guest Beer #2: Fortside Brewing - Vancouver, WA Orange Whip, New England IPA, 5.9% ABV, 60 IBU "No fruit was harmed in the making of this “Juicy” IPA. In fact, there is no “juice” in this IPA. Rather, it is a real IPA that benefits from heaps of El Dorado and Mosaic Hops which give it succulent aromas and flavors of orange, tangerine and grapefruit." Who wants an orange whip? Episode Notes Episode 68: Dust Bowl Brewing Co’s Lateral 6 Juicy IPAIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at Lateral 6 Juicy IPA from Dust Bowl Brewing Company in Turlock, CA. Have our friends at Dust Bowl enumerated another winner? Let’s find out!Lateral number six is exceptionally cloudy when poured into a glass. It’s got that great orange core ringed with a golden highlight. The scent isn’t overpowering, but fruit is very prominent here. Despite the fact that you often think of citrus when it comes to juicy IPAs, what I’m getting most here is stone fruit. There’s no spice and not much in the way of piney hops, either. But what about the taste? The juicy side of the beer pays of exactly as advertised. As I have found with many other Dust Bowl brews, they are fully capable of bringing fruit flavors without adding too much sweetness to the beer and that’s exactly what they have done here. The bitterness of this one sits in my mouth way differently than I expected. It’s an all-over sensation, not just hanging out in one part of my mouth the way a lot of IPAs do. Lateral 6 is a really light IPA, and that’s not to say that it’s lacking in flavor. But there is such an excellent balance of the fruity juiciness and the strong bitterness of the hops that it’s extremely easy to drink in quantity. Lateral 6 is currently sitting at a 3.89 out of 5 on Untappd, so you don’t have to take my word alone when I say get out and give it a try. It’s a 6.7% alcohol by volume, so it will treat you right if you decide to have more than one, which I think you will find a very easy prospect. That’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as we take a look at Firefall Red California Red Ale by Tioga Sequoia Craft Brewery in Fresno, CA. Will we be calling the fire department to help us put this one out? We’ll find out next week. Episode Notes Episode 68: Santa Maria Brewing Company’s Mo-Tra Blood Orange IPAIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at Mo-Tra Blood Orange IPA from Santa Maria Brewing Company in Atascadero, CA. Will this one turn us into orange-sucking vampires? Let’s find out!Mo-Tra is a dark cloudy golden, trending toward brown in the glass. You can smell the orange on this one from a mile away. It’s full of the promise of lush juice and bright fruit. From the scent, I couldn’t wait to try it out. But what about the taste? Mo-Tra hits right up front with a big wall of orange juice, just like the scent promises. There’s not a whole lot of bitterness here, but if you swing more toward the juicy end of modern IPAs in your taste, you’re going to find a whole lot to like here. Sadly, there’s not a ton of bitterness to offset all that juice, so for my taste it does get a bit sweeter than I would like. It’s not candy-sweet, but just enough over the edge on that side that I’d like to have a more powerful bitter side to balance things out just a bit. Santa Maria adds oranges to their mix during secondary fermentation and then highlights this juice with a couple of varieties of hops that are also known to produce bright, citrusy notes. As such, if you’re looking for plenty of orange flavor, this beer will be a perfect selection for you. Mo-Tra tracks at 7.2% Alcohol by Volume, so it’s got the good strength of a standard IPA to back up that flavorful orange punch. That’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as we take a look at Lateral 6 Juicy IPA by Dust Bowl Brewing in Turlock, CA. With hops imported from New Zealand and Australia, will this be an adventure down under? We’ll find out next week. Craft Beer Bucket List with Mike and Big Ray. We bring "Beers you Need to Try, Before You Die!" Mike and Big Ray have been best friends for over 20 years. Mike, who is a professor at Eastern Kentucky University and part owner of Dreaming Creek Brewery with locations in Richmond and London, Kentucky, brings a professional and well rounded knowledge of beers and how it's brewed. Big Ray who is a PMP certified Project Manager and part time You Tuber residing in Broken Arrow, OK travels frequently for work and enjoys craft beers all across the United States. Big Ray loves to enjoy beer but doesn't have the same knowledge base Mike has. The two vastly different takes on beer bring a well rounded review of the beers that are reviewed on this podcast. Each episode will feature three beers. Mike will have 1 beer to try, Big Ray will have 1 beer to try, and there will be a beer that both Mike and Big Ray try and review together. Mike and Big Ray both travel frequently and have the opportunity to pick up beers along the way and send them to each other to enjoy and review! If so, has craft beer had anything to do with the change?” And we have a full mail bag. The letter of the week is from Luke Pomery: Hi Guys, Have been listening to and enjoying your show for quite a while now so thought it was time to send you a quick email. Recently I was on my honeymoon and whilst at a stopover in Antwerp I found something I thought was amusing. There in a train station convenience store in Antwerp, Belgium was none other than Australia's own Pure Blonde. Except this wasn't the regular Australian Pure Blonde as released by CUB, this was branded as Pure Blonde by Jupiler. Not sure if this is the same stuff made in Melbourne, re-sleeved for a Belgian audience or if Jupiler are making it themselves using the combined CUB/AB InBev properties. The most amusing part of this story though is that this stock was actually located in the bargain bin. A very small sample size I know but perhaps Belgians don't buy into the low-carb hype! On another topic I've just come back from work in south-east Queensland and while there I tried some of the excellent Green Beacon, 3 Bolt Pale Ale. However I was a little disappointed to see that the ones I bought had been canned around 9 months earlier so probably weren't as fresh as they could've been. This was made more disappointing by the fact it was only brewed an hour or so away from the Dan Murphy's store in which I bought them. Nevertheless it was a great beer and I hope the age of the cans didn't negatively affect the product. Thanks for making the show and never forget the importance of the Cook limit! PS - apropos Pete's comments regarding male/female signs on toilet doors, I was recently confronted by a tricky one while visiting Het Anker in Mechelen (after several very high alcohol tasters) as on their doors they had only the astrological signs for male and female. What hops are used and how they’re used is also important. As much as 3 to 4 pounds of hops per barrel of beer are added to the fermenter incrementally over 3 to 4 days, usually, 24 to 48 hours after the yeast is pitched. Hops are added to the fermenter to take advantage of the biotransformation that can take place when yeast converts oxygenated hop compounds into fruity tasting esters, acetates, and other flavor compounds. Our research in association with several craft brewing partners believe that hop varieties rich in geraniol might be driving these fruity/juicy flavors. In fact, our research suggests the hop essential oil geraniol could be responsible for much of this biotransformation. Hop varieties rich in geraniol include Centennial, Cascade, Chinook, Crystal, Bravo, Brewers Gold, and 06277 (formerly Denali) to name a few. Our research has also indicated linalool rich varieties in combination with geraniol rich varieties work synergistically for enhancing hop aroma. Further explanations for this can be discovered in Dr. John Paul Mayes latest research titled "Hidden Secrets of the NEIPA." Brews News Week is Proudly presented by Cryer Malt. Meanwhile, Jeremy touts supreme on his beer from Oregon, including a new beer style, the Brut IPA. Will it sweep the nation like the Juicy IPA. Next, we check into the American Pale Male Mail Pail, where Mike sparks a conversation about lawnmower beers. Finally, it is time for the FDR. With an arsenal of analogies, we manage to break this one down.Beer in this episode: Magic Hat Zirkus BoyCheers!
We botched the intro. It happens. We recover by going into beer brags, where Jeremy has an imperial stout while waiting for a movie to start. Meanwhile, Michael sampled a variety of brews from Fair State Brewing. Next, we hit the Brews News hard. Cedar Rapids apparently has great water for beer, the Juicy IPA is now an official style of the Brewers Association, a New Belgium releases a new brew with that tastes like that good kind kind, without any of the kind kind in it. Finally, we get into the FDR, which takes a turn for the worse after some deliberation.Beer in this episode: Sam Adams Sam '76Cheers!
