The documentary short will feature stunning never-before-seen archival footage and photographs from McGee's life. “Racing was never just about competition for me—it was about freedom, courage, and pushing myself beyond limits,” says Mary McGee. “I'm proud to share my journey in ‘Motorcycle Mary.' She was the first woman to race motorcycles in the United States. The film won an Oscar this past Sunday. This episode originally aired on February 27, 2024. Today we're talking to pianist, film composer and LAUSD alumnus Kris Bowers. Bowers has composed the scores for films like "Green Book," "King Richard" and "The Color Purple," and streaming series like "Dear White People" and "Bridgerton."But that LAUSD part of his resume is very relevant to one of his latest projects. It's a short documentary that Bowers co-directed (along with Ben Proudfoot) called “The Last Repair Shop." It's all about the technicians who work in a repair shop downtown, fixing and tuning the more than 100,000 instruments the district provides to students, free of charge. In addition to an Oscar nod, the film has also inspired a $15 million capital campaign — to raise funds for the repair shop and for a student apprenticeship program.

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast presents an interview with Ben Proudfoot, a Los Angeles-based filmmaker most noted as the director of The Queen of Basketball, winner of the 2021 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. With co-director Kris Bowers he also brought to life the short documentary film A Concerto Is a Conversation, which was an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021. His latest documentary, The Last Repair Shop — the focus of this episode — is nominated at this year's Academy Awards for Best Documentary Short Subject. Once commonplace in the United States, today Los Angeles is by far the largest and one of the last American cities to provide free and freely repaired musical instruments to its public schoolchildren, a continuous service since 1959. The Last Repair Shop grants an all access pass to the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80,000 student instruments in good repair and in it the film blends the unexpectedly intimate personal histories of the repair people with emotional, firsthand accounts from the actual student musicians for whom their instruments made all the difference. In this episode host Michael Shields and Ben Proudfoot expound upon what music and access to instruments means to the lives of the children in Los Angeles while considering how the power of music has changed the lives of those who passionately labor in the repair shop. They talk about how the promise of the American Dream manifests itself within the documentary, the message of hope that is abounding in the film, and so much more. Ultimately this episode celebrates an inspiring documentary that serves as a passionate love letter to Los Angeles and to those unsung heroes who gave countless others the gift of music. This is an episode that pays tribute to a truly unique program that has produced countless legends from John Williams to Kendrick Lamar.Watch The Last Repair Shop here! Hosted on Acast. In their second collaboration, co-directors Ben Proudfoot & Kris Bowers' THE LAST REPAIR SHOP introduces us to the Los Angeles Unified School District's instrument repair facility for all of the LAUSD student musician. Led by the charming general manager, Steve Bagmanyan, the film introduces a technician from each department: Dana Atkinson, in the strings division, who takes us to his personal breaking point as a young man confronting his sexuality; Paty Moreno, in charge of brass and the sole woman in the shop, who chronicles her pursuit of the American dream as a Mexican immigrant and single mother; Duane Michaels, a quirky, self-described hillbilly who fixes the woodwind instruments and shares the rip-roaring tale of how his $20 fiddle took him on tour with Elvis; and finally Steve himself, who learned to tune pianos in America after surviving a harrowing escape from ethnic persecution in Azerbaijan in the late 1980s, a conflict again in the headlines today. THE LAST REPAIR SHOP blends the unexpectedly intimate personal histories of the repair people with emotional, firsthand accounts from the actual student musicians for whom their instruments made all the difference. Porche, 9, shares how her beloved violin helps her cope with her family's health problems; college-bound Manuel, 18, states that his enormous sousaphone diverted him from the pitfalls of growing up as a low-income kid from Boyle Heights; Ismerai, 15, whose alto sax brought her much-needed discipline and calm; and the bookish Amanda, 17, brought to tears by her profound connection with the piano. Co-director Kris Bowers joins us to talk about the impact the LAUSD has had on his own musical journey, the joy of discovering the amazing stories told by the technicians and the students in the film and the enduring power of music to heal, empower and inspire. It starts like a modern day fairy tale:  from the cotton fields of Mississippi, to three national collegiate championships, to scoring the first basket in Olympic history.  But despite all her plaudits, when all that had passed, Lusia Mae (Lucy) Harrison felt she could pursue the game no further.  In his Oscar-nominated short, “The Queen of Basketball,” director Ben Proudfoot (nominated just last year for “A Concerto is a Conversation”) puts Lucy front and center to tell her own story, while he skillfully illustrates it with both a compelling contemporary portrait as well as well-chosen archival footage.  It's a story of pride–both for her career and her for her family of 4 outstanding children–but also one of athletic potential halted in its path.   Join Mike as he and Ben explore the history behind both Lucy's life and women's basketball, as well as the choices Ben made in creating this engaging film. The new short subject documentary A CONCERTO IS A CONVERSATION tells the story of virtuoso jazz pianist and film composer Kris Bowers as he tracks his family’s lineage through his 91-year-old grandfather from Jim Crow Florida to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In the 13-minute film A CONCERTO IS A CONVERSATION, Bowers traces the process of breaking into new spaces through generations of sacrifice that came before him, focusing on the story of his grandfather Horace Bowers. As a young man, he left his home in the Jim Crow South, eventually ending up in Los Angeles. Encountering discrimination at every turn, he and his wife, Alice, nevertheless made a life as business owners. Today, their legacy lives on through their family and community in South Los Angeles, where a stretch of Central Avenue was recently designated Bowers Retail Square — in case any question remained about whether it’s a place they belong. Horace Bowers tells his grandson Kris Bowers,  “Never think that you’re not supposed to be there.” A CONCERTO IS A CONVERSATION, co-directors Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers join us for a conversation on their deeply personal film, primer on race in Southern California and the power of music and family to help us all see the world beyond ourselves. On this 226th episode of “Marketing Today,” host Alan Hart interviews Ben Proudfoot, founder of Breakwater Studios. In today’s episode, Proudfoot talks all about how brand films can thrive and closing the gap between the brands and the filmmakers. We also discuss how he has been able to produce a multitude of films during the COVID-19 pandemic. Proudfoot’s career as an entrepreneur and filmmaking began after his success as a junior magician in Canada, becoming an international champion at a very young age. We discuss how that success led him to the University of Southern California. Proudfoot shares how his films bring “sometimes ordinary, sometimes extraordinary people’s stories to life.” Proudfoot then discusses how today’s younger generations won’t trust brands who are not clear about who they are or solely focused on making money. We discuss how the recent deaths of his father and other people in his life have taught him that “our life is so fragile and so short and could be over at any moment...and it’s intensely motivating to me.” This discussion teaches many lessons on brand-filmmaking today.   Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today”: Becoming a championship magician as a teen. 1:37 Magic became a career in filmmaking. 3:58 Changing his mind from a career in magic to one in film. 5:25 A short viral documentary launched Ben’s career. 7:08 Establishing a relationship with The New York Times. 8:38 There are a plethora of layers to all of Ben’s stories. 11:30 Sometimes there is no more elegant way to tell a story. 12:50 Ben can be compared to the anti-Ken Burns. 13:48 Why Ben chose to do branded films. 15:30 It is incredibly difficult to make content that serves the brand. 17:57 How marketers can work directly with filmmakers. 19:10 The problem is that marketing and advertising get all the money. 22:00 Bridging the long-term and short-term schools of marketing. 23:20 Staying neutral will cause your audience to distrust you. 24:45 Young people don’t trust companies that exist to make money. 26:10 Clarity in brand identity leads to success and options. 28:00 The pandemic has led to innovation in the film industry. 29:20 A series of death-related experiences have shaped Ben’s driven mindset. 32:15 Advice that Ben would give to his younger self. 34:30 An impactful purchase that has cost under $100. 35:53 Brands and causes that people should be taking note of. 37:05 The biggest opportunity in today’s industry. 38:59 The biggest threat to filmmakers/brands right now. 39:52   Resources Mentioned: Breakwater Studios Ben Proudfoot Magic Castle (LA) Canadian Association of Magicians OpDocs on NYT Lindsay Crouse (Senior Editor at NYT) King of Fish & Chips The Aspiring Black Astronaut Who Never Made It to Space Almost Famous Series with NYT & Breakwater Studios Ken Burns Unum Ken Burns Walt Disney - Biography Vimeo AirPods SIPP – Self isolated production protocol approach to production during COVID times “Clarity breeds success, success breeds options” Bialetti Expresso Maker Netflix Brown Girls Doc Mafia - Iyabo Boyd   Subscribe the podcast: Listen in iTunes (link: http://apple.co/2dbdAhV) Listen in Google Podcasts (link: http://bit.ly/2Rc2kVa) Listen in Spotify (Link: http://spoti.fi/2mCUGnC ) Connect with the Guest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-proudfoot-09347a118/ https://twitter.com/bgproudfoot https://twitter.com/breakwaterstud Connect with Marketing Today and Alan Hart: http://twitter.com/abhart https://www.linkedin.com/in/alanhart http://twitter.com/themktgtoday https://www.facebook.com/themktgtoday/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/marketing-today-with-alan-hart/   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingtoday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today’s Word By Word broadcast begins with an Irish toast befitting this weekend’s weather: May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rains fall soft upon your fields. Today’s guests represent the Ninth Annual Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival (SDFF) which opens on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday Evening, March 17th and runs through Sunday afternoon, March 20th at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Sharing the microphones with Gil are the Program Director and documentary filmmaker, Randy Hall. We also have a phone conversations with magician and Filmmaker Ben Proudfoot whose feature film Rwanda & Juliet tells the unlikely story of a well-intentioned man’s attempts to stage a production of Romeo & Juliet in Rwanda as a means of reconciliation. Several of Ben’s short films (Rust, Stone, Ladybug, The Ox) are presented from his “Life’s Work” made-for-streaming docs. Gil is hosting the Thursday night festival opener, Kent Jones’ exceptional documentary Hitchcock/Trudeau, and he invites listeners to join him.
