Listen to ladies chatting in the tearoom.  Outside the house, Ivonne is stunned by the view across the bay. Boardwalks lead her to a steep slope. She notices the densely overgrown forest floor. This is a good place to experience the original Vancouver Island woodland.  Oh! What's moving over there, near the shrubs? Listen: ravens!  As always, you'll find more information in the shownote.  This podcast is part of a series of shows and blogs about Milner Gardens and Woodland in Canada. 100% English episode

During the summer of 1976, Cory Daye‘s voice wafted through the bamboo forests of New York's Fire Island like an intoxicating fragrance. As the lead vocalist and co-founder of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, she beckoned the island's dwellers to untold pleasures while the group's self-titled debut stirred dancers into sweaty, salty abandon. Boardwalks seldom pulsed with such a bewitching beat.Fire Island was worlds away from the South Bronx where Daye first met composer/arranger Stony Browder, Jr. (guitar/piano) and his brother, lyricist August Darnell (bass). Drummer Mickey Sevilla and vibe master “Sugar Coated” Andy Hernandez (aka Coati Mundi) helped crystallize the group's musical aesthetic, which had morphed from R&B into a blend of big band, soul, Latin, jazz, dance, and pop. Produced by Four Seasons tunesmith Sandy Linzer, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (1976) brought the grandeur of swing-era bandstands to the discotheque, melding wry social commentary with classic Hollywood romanticism. “Everybody's favorite album is Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band on RCA,” critic Vince Aletti wrote in his “Disco File” column for Record World. “It's this summer's major surprise hit not only because three cuts are eminently danceable (‘Sour and Sweet', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and ‘I'll Play the Fool'), but because the group's fabulously eclectic sound — drawing on several decades of American pop music from big band jazz to doo-wop soul to sophisticated disco, full of sly musical quotes — is so fresh and appealing” (7 August 1976).Aletti would later declare Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band the “Most Essential Disco Album of 1976”, while the Los Angeles Times named Savannah Band “the hottest disco act in the country” (26 November 1976). Even Aletti's peers in the rock press cheered the group's arrival. “It's a pleasure to admit that their music is a fresh pop hybrid with its own rhythmic integrity, and that its sophistication is a lot brighter and more lively than most of the organic bullshit making it to the rock stage in the mid-'70s,” Robert Christgau noted in the Village Voice.Rolling Stone published its own rave review of Savannah Band's debut. “The highest moments introduce a genuinely surrealistic disco whose adventurous use of bitonality and electronic sound effects stands in absolute contrast to the recent disco market's cynical prefabrication of oldies,” wrote Stephen Holden. “‘I'll Play the Fool', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and especially ‘Sour and Sweet', are group originals that literally explode the genre with their brittle scintillating audacity” (23 September 1976).With a sound that signaled disco's penchant for innovation, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band supplanted the Bee Gees' “You Should Be Dancing” from number one on Billboard‘s “National Disco Action Top 30” in October 1976. A month later, “Cherchez La Femme” debuted on the Hot 100 where it would peak at #27 and introduce one of the era's most indelible opening lines — “Tommy Mottola lives on the road” — to the airwaves. The album itself was certified gold and earned the group a GRAMMY nomination for “Best New Artist”.In '79 Cory Daye released her solo album, “Cory and Me”. Rolling Stone, November '79 - Cory delivers a vocal performance that's direct and elusive, girlishly simple and musically sophisticated, sexy without being huff-and-puffy.   When Daye makes her entrance in any song, it's like the sun breaking through a bank of dark clouds. Paired again with producer-extraordinaire Sandy Linzer, singles “Single Again”, “A Wiggle and A Giggle” and the thumping “Pow Wow” will Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. At the end of this episode, Bat Masterson has a reflection on death while attending his brother’s funeral. He reflects on his inability to control a destiny of life and loss so easily taken in the wake of the frontier. Gallantry is never a replacement from a quickly distorted ending in life - as death will always take its toll on the living. “Boardwalks from Hell” is based on true accounts in Dodge City History and at the conclusion of this show, Brad Smalley will provide the second versions of The Killing of Ed Masterson.

The motive for Masterson's return is being prompted by both his concerns for his older brother and an economic opportunity being made possible through various insiders who want to promote the cattle trade of 1877. The story is built around the foundational meanings of courage on the frontier - for civilization comes with a cost. It is the harshest cost of all, revealing every flaw to what a man knows about courage in plain sight. Purchase the book A Man in a Black Derby Hat at Amazon.

[spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #88 May 18, 2016 of Roadtreking - The RV Lifestyle Podcast: This week's show was recorded at the beautiful Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, FL. That's our Roadtrek where we parked in a lot overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. We opened the rear and side doors and recorded the show right from here, enjoying the nice sea breeze and salty air. Henderson beach boast more than 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline border the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural features of the park include sand pines, scrub oaks, and dune rosemary. Boardwalks provide access to the beach for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. Four large and two small pavilions allow for picnicking and grilling. The view out our back door as we recorded this episode There's great camping here. The park has 60 campsites that can accommodate either tents or RVs, with a mixture of back in and pull-through sites. The sites have water, electricity (all sites are 50 amp except campsite #28); picnic tables, ground grills and clothesline posts. Campsites do not have sewer connections; a centrally located dump station is for provided for the proper disposal of waste. Amenities include heated and air conditioned restrooms with showers, coin operated washers, dryers and vending machines. Pets are welcome at campsites. Unlike remote wilderness camping, provisions and restaurants are a short drive away. The only downside is the spots here are usually booked a year in advance. We often to day camping, as shown above. JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK This week's tip is about cooking and serving sizes. I've shared before that I like to prepare as many meals ahead of time as possible. That means less time spent in the RV on meal prep while Mike and Bo are having fun outside. [spp-timestamp time="5:15"] So we try to spend an afternoon at home before each trip planning meals and cooking them. One easy meal is meatloaf. And when I make meatloaf, I like to bake it in a muffin and cupcake pan. The pan I use is non-stick and it has spaces to make 12 cupcakes. But we make 12 little meat loafs. Just spn the meatloaf mixture into each hole and bake in a preheated oven at 350 for about 25 minutes. I've found that each one is a perfect serving. Sometimes Mike takes two. But after baking the little meat loaf muffins, they store easily in a zip lock bag which then goes into the freezer of our Roadtrek CS Adventurous. It takes only a couple of minutes to heat them up in our RV's microwave/convection oven. So simple. We serve with steamed green beans and a nice salad. Meatball muffins. Try ‘em. Mikie likes em. I bet you will too! The tip of the week is brought to you by Good Sam, the world's most popular RV organization, now celebrating its 50th year. LISTENER QUESTIONS and COMMENTS OF THE WEEK: Listener Michael asks for help on adding solar for his RV: How much does he need? We refer him Try to the Go Power! Calculator  which will recommend battery bank size for the loads you use. [spp-timestamp time="10:05"] This is a great web tool that will help you size your system and provide you with equipment recommendations based on your specific power usage, location and season.

It seems a bit like comic books are everywhere these days: dominating our screens from Iron Man to Jessica Jones. But this isn't the first time that there's been a comic book boom. And it's not always as easy to ride that wave, as an artist, as it might seem. Comic artist Matt Huynh has had a lot of success at this comic-making thing. First in Australia, now in New York. We're also joined by Marcelo Baez, who witnessed the 90s comics craziness first hand. Links from this episode: So much of Matt's art is on his site; but you'll need to check out SBS to read the Boat. Have a look at Marcelo's work on his site. There's some Diabla artwork to see as well. Frank Miller wrote and drew things like the Dark Knight Returns, 300, Sin City and Daredevil. The Daredevil story Born Again was one of the comics Matt recommends getting started reading with. The other comic he recommended was Marjane Satrapi's Chicken with Plums, which is first date approved by his girlfriend. Some of the Australian comics mentioned in the episode were Cyberswine, Da 'n Dill, Hairbutt the Hippo, Squadron Supremeand Tim McEwan's Greener Pastures. Matt drew us a red homage to McEwan's comic for FBi's upcoming Brush with Fame art auction for 2016: Songs from this episode: Girl — Beck Strange Nostalgia For The Future — Cut Copy Golden Valves — Orkestra Del Sol Phat Planet — Leftfield Boardwalks — Little may Black Wax — Dananananaykroyd

Lisa Kereszi's latest monograph "Fun and Games" explores places where some people might go to escape from the boredom and challenges of everyday life. Boardwalks, dance halls, the great outdoors, and even strip clubs are all places of interest for Kereszi but rather than give us a glamorized travelogue, Kereszi scratches below the surface, sometimes deeply, to show us what these places of interest are really like and, in a way, that makes them even more interesting (and maybe even fun).
