Artmosphere Opens Up Under New Leadership – Meet Justin Bennett and his Booking Agent and Sound Engineer, Moose Harris

Discover Lafayette welcomes Justin Bennett, the new owner of Artmosphere, and Anthony Daniels—known to many as Moose Harris—who serves as booking agent and sound engineer for the venue. Moose Harris, Justin Bennett, and Jan Swift at recording Discover Lafayette at RADER. Located at 902 Johnston Street in downtown Lafayette, Artmosphere has long been known as a cultural hub where music, art, and community converge. Now, with Justin at the helm and Moose helping steer the ship, this iconic space is entering a bold new chapter. Justin, originally from Brooklyn by way of Seattle, and his wife Marcela, a talented chef, made their way to Lafayette after the early waves of the pandemic. A former journalist and public information officer for New York City Emergency Management, Justin brings a rare blend of communication savvy and passion for grassroots music culture. His wife, Marcela, runs Lana's Empanadas food truck—named after their dog!—and previously helped launch the kitchen at Mercy Kitchen. Together, they've embraced Lafayette as home and are now pouring their heart and soul into revitalizing Artmosphere. Moose Harris, born and raised in New Iberia and a seasoned music producer, performer, and radio personality, has deep roots in the Louisiana music scene. From his classical and jazz studies under legends like Ellis Marsalis to his frontman days in the Reggae Ska Conspiracy, Moose brings both creative insight and a wealth of experience to the table. Having worked with Artmosphere under its previous ownership, he already knew the venue inside and out—literally holding the keys before Justin ever stepped through the door. What they're creating together is something special. Gone are the days of Artmosphere being an undefined multipurpose space. "As Justin clearly puts it, this is first and foremost a music venue." A place for curated, intentional nights of music that make sense together—no more scattershot open mic lineups. Under their guidance, Artmosphere is becoming a home for touring artists and a launching pad for local talent. And while the name is slated to change soon, the vision is clear: create a sustainable, artist-respecting space with good music, good food, and good drinks. And about that food—Justin's East Coast roots are making their mark. From his Italian grandmother's Sunday sauce to a hearty Irish shepherd's pie and the promise of Lafayette's best-poured Guinness, the kitchen is set to impress. Marcela is helping build out the kitchen and train staff, sourcing from local farms to ensure seasonal, delicious offerings. It's all about quality—from the music to the meatballs. During Festival International, the team soft-launched Artmosphere with eight wildly different events in five days, showcasing everything from hip hop and zydeco to burlesque and R&B. Every act was carefully chosen, every night was intentional. And it's just the beginning. Moose is already booking shows into the fall, and together they're building a community around the venue, one great night of music at a time. Soon, a new name will be unveiled along with a new website, including a music blog produced in collaboration with UL Lafayette journalism students. It's all part of a bigger mission: to make Lafayette a must-stop destination for national touring acts and to elevate the local scene with the respect and support it deserves. We're grateful for what Justin and Moose are doing—for their commitment to musicians, to our cultural economy, and to downtown Lafayette. It's time for this. And we're lucky to have them here. For more, visit Artmosphere's Facebook page or email benett.management@yahoo.com if you're interested in performing or getting involved. Stay tuned for the name reveal—we'll be the first to share it!

Q: Are there levels to podcast booking? Navigating podcast booking can be complex. Whether you're new or experienced, securing the right podcast appearances is crucial. Here's a breakdown to help you choose the best approach: 1️⃣ Virtual Assistants (VAs) and In-House Assistants Pros: Cost-effective; often already on your team. Good for initial, easy-to-get opportunities. Cons: May lack industry connections and specialized knowledge. Likely to secure spots on smaller podcasts with limited reach. Ideal For: Those starting out or testing the waters without significant investment. 2️⃣ Specialized Podcast Booking Agencies Pros: Expertise in specific niches like coaching, consulting, or book promotions. Better connections leading to higher-quality podcast placements. Cons: Costs vary; may require a retainer. Not all agencies cover every industry or specialization. Ideal For: Professionals ready to invest in targeted exposure within their field. 3️⃣ Full-Service PR Firms Pros: Access to top-tier podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience, The Rich Roll Podcast, and Call Her Daddy. Offer comprehensive services beyond podcast booking. Cons: Significantly higher costs. Not necessary for everyone, especially if your topic is niche. Ideal For: High-profile individuals seeking mass exposure. Key Considerations When Choosing a Podcast Booking Service Subject Matter: Is your topic widely appealing or niche? Target Audience: Do the podcasts reach your ideal listeners? Career Stage: Your position can determine whether a VA, specialized agency, or PR firm suits you best. Budget: Higher-tier services come with higher costs; assess your investment capacity. Expectations: Even top agents can't book you on major podcasts if your topic doesn't resonate broadly. Final Thoughts There's no one-size-fits-all solution. The best approach depends on your goals, industry, and resources. When you're ready: Research Thoroughly: Find agencies specializing in your area. Schedule Consultations: Talk directly with potential booking agents. Assess Fit: Choose a partner who understands your industry and can realistically help you achieve your podcasting goals.

"It's not about you all the time; it's about reading an audience." Your art isn't just something you do for fun; it's your legacy. The things we create are the things we give back to society. If we're musicians, our music has the power to inspire others. If we're entertainers, our work has the power to uplift, unite, and energize an audience. If the thing we create is community, we have the power to bring people together in new and exciting ways for important causes. In this episode, Emmeline sits down with Michael Clay, founder of Michael Clay Productions and co-founder of the Texas Music Project, to talk about the primary paradigm shift required to truly change an artist's life. They also talk about how to book gigs as a musician, what goes into a major event production, and how one's career in the music industry can change over time. Michael shares the importance of looking for needs in the industry--and explains why "playing live" is really about serving the venue, client, and audience. He also discusses his #MusicHeals project and the amazing work he's done with the Texas Music Project. 3 Challenges of Podcast Booking Agents

Questions with a Podcast Booking Agent

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2024 1:46

Q: What are the 3 biggest/hardest things required of a podcast booker that the client/guest NEVER knows/sees? A: Research, follow through, and the cost of networking. As a podcast booking agent, my role extends far beyond simply scheduling interviews. Here are three critical aspects of my job that often go unnoticed but are crucial to delivering value to my clients: 1. Strategic Research and Alignment: A significant part of my day is dedicated to researching podcasts to ensure they align with my clients' goals and target demographics. Finding the perfect match is not always straightforward. It involves understanding both the podcast's audience and the host's openness to my client's objectives, whether it's sharing expertise or introducing a product. 2. Meticulous Organization and Follow-through: Securing podcast spots is just the beginning. The real challenge lies in managing the timeline. Interviews might be recorded one week but aired months later. Organizing these schedules while creating trackable links, graphics, and sometimes even video content for each episode requires continuous attention and coordination, often spanning several months. 3. Proactive Networking: Each year, I invest over $15,000 attending industry events—not to seek new clients, but to connect with podcast hosts and producers. I will often travel to in-person interviews at my own expense just to be in the same room as a host for 60 min. This networking is crucial. It enhances the quality and relevance of opportunities I can offer my clients. This behind-the-scenes work might not be visible, but it's what enables me to provide substantial, sustained value to those I serve. It's a testament to the dedication required in the podcasting industry, driven by a commitment to bring unparalleled opportunities to my clients. Q: What should you ask an agency when looking to hire? What differentiators should we be looking for? A: What is their area of expertise, their background, their successes, and their approach When searching for a podcast booking agent, their unique background and expertise are key to ensuring your success in the podcast world. Here are some critical points to consider: Diverse Backgrounds: Agents come from various fields—my path led me from music and talent representation to podcasts through listening to real estate investing education podcasts. Specialization: Understand their specialty areas. While I work with a wide range of founders, entrepreneurs, and high performers, real estate investing is a significant focus due to my extensive experience. Passion and Drive: What motivates them? This can greatly influence how they pitch you and the topics they are comfortable with. I get most excited when I land a client a huge show! A few specific question you might want to ask are: What is your background and how did you get into podcast booking? Can you describe your typical client? Have you worked with anyone in my industry before? What are your strongest areas of expertise when it comes to podcast topics or industries? How do you tailor your pitch for different podcasts or hosts? Can you provide examples of successful placements you have managed? What are your proudest achievements as a Podcast Booking Agent? Not every agent will perfectly match your field, but aligning their passion and expertise with your goals is crucial. Whether they have a strong footing in PR, business, or support specific entrepreneur groups, their background will impact your podcast journey. Choose someone whose expertise and interests complement your vision for success! A lot of the time, fantasy worldbuilding invokes huge maps, spanning civilizations and continents, with characters traversing vast distances on their epic quests. But what about the worldbuilding that happens with a tighter focus on an intimate, even insular location? Guest Cherie Priest joins us to discuss creating small towns just ripe for gothic mysteries, peculiar traditions, and weird, haunting circumstances. What does isolation -- either naturally developing, imposed by larger-scale conditions, or willfully chosen -- do to a group of people? What sorts of lore and habits will spring up in such areas? And how do you, as a worldbuilder, think about their infrastructure -- or the lack thereof -- and how that might affect your characters and your plot? [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Cherie Priest is the author of two dozen books and novellas, most recently the Booking Agents mysteries Grave Reservations and Flight Risk. She also wrote gothic horror project The Toll and haunted house thriller The Family Plot – as well as the hit YA graphic novel mash-ups I Am Princess X and its follow up, The Agony House. But she is perhaps best known for the steampunk pulp adventures of the Clockwork Century, beginning with Boneshaker. She has been nominated for the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, and the Locus award – which she won with Boneshaker. Cherie has also written a number of urban fantasy titles, and composed pieces (large and small) for George R. R. Martin's shared world universe, the Wild Cards. Her short stories and nonfiction articles have appeared in such fine publications as Weird Tales, Publishers Weekly, and numerous anthologies – and her books have been translated into nine languages in eleven countries. Although she was born in Florida on the day Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, for the last twenty years Cherie has largely divided her time between Chattanooga, TN, and Seattle, WA – where she presently lives with her husband and a menagerie of exceedingly photogenic pets.

Q: “What is the biggest benefit that a podcast booker brings to the table?” A: Expertise. Network and Relationships. Quality. Bandwidth. Insight. Efficiency. Most entrepreneurs and business owners agree that specialists are better than generalists, or worse, novices. Podcast booking agents possess a nuanced understanding of host preferences and listener interests, relationships, and insider knowledge because it's all they do. Specialization matters. While assistants and VAs can handle outreach, their success often taps out at low-hanging opportunities.  I spend over $10k a year going to conferences and events in the industries my clients work in.  I don't do this to get more clients; I do it because I know podcast hosts and producers are there and I want to rub shoulders with them. This not only builds my relationships with them, but also let's me learn what they are looking for. I even fly with clients to larger interviews to get 1-on-1 time with the hosts. I'm an investor and have started and run several businesses, and I use that experience to help craft compelling topics that I believe will benefit the listener of a podcast. Most assistants simply can't contribute that kind of perspective. You can get interviews by asking your assistant or VA to find podcasts to pitch you, but you're going to see higher quality results faster if you work with a podcast booking agent. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. Being productive as a creative isn't about being perfect or being perfectly in control; it's about taking action. In this first episode of 2024, Emmeline sits down with Simon Pruitt--a 20-year-old writer, venue manager, and live music event curator--to talk about the value of starting before you're ready. The Founder of OTO Experience, Simon booked his first music festival at age 17 by acting on his crazy idea to create a one-time-only concert of Lake Highland High School students and alumni.  That one endeavor led helped him build the creative life he leads now, from writing for a city-wide magazine to running Dallas's hottest new venue, The B Side. Simon shares how passion and enthusiasm have driven him to put together "insane" multi-sensory events that connect people to musicians through one-of-a-kind experiences.Simon and Emmeline talk about the importance of live music, the essential but terrifying nature of letting go of control, and how we each benefit from knowing our strengths and delegating our weaknesses. They also talk about some of the artists that have graced both the podcast AND the OTO stage--including Sam Cormier, Billy Law, Zeke Forever, and more.To learn more about OTO, visit the official website or follow OTO and Simon, Zoe, and Grayson on Instagram. You can also follow The B Side on Instagram, or send a booking inquiry to thebsidedallas@gmail.com. For behind-the-scenes information and more about Journey of an Artist, visit the Journey of Series official webpage, or follow Emmeline on social media at @EmmelineMusic.
