Andrés Espinoza Agurrrrto's new book, Salsa Consciente: Politics, Poetics, and Latinidad in the Meta-Barrio, explores the Salsa consciente movement, a Latino movement of music, poetry, and political discourse that exploded in the 1970s. Largely linked to the development of Nuyo latino popular music, Salsa consciente was brought about, in part, by the mass Latino migration to New York City beginning in the 1950s and the subsequent social movements that were tied to the shifting political landscapes. Defined by its lyrical content, its unique sound, and the political and social issues facing U.S. Latinos and Latin Americans, Salsa consciente evokes the overarching cultural-nationalist idea of Latinidad (Latin-ness). Analysis of over 120 different salsa songs spanning sixty years, the book draws on lyrical and musical perspectives to argue that the urban Latino identity expressed in Salsa consciente was constructed largely from diasporic, de territorialized, and at times imagined cultural memory. From this perspective, Latino / Latin American identity is in part based on African and Indigenous experience, especially as it relates to Spanish colonialism. A unique study of the intersection of Salsa and Latino and Latin American identity, Salsa consciente appeals to scholars of ethnic studies and fans of salsa music alike.ANDRÉS ESPINOZA AGURTO serves as assistant professor in the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University. He studied Afro-Cuban percussion at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (Cuba), graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a degree in jazz composition, and holds an MA in music from the University of York (England). He received his PhD in musicology and ethnomusicology from Boston University. He is also a composer, musical director, and percussionist for his own group, Ayé, an also a consecrated drummer in the lineage of Añá Ilu Kan and is currently conducting research on the lineage, performance practice, and aesthetics of Afro-Cuban batá drummers and drumming. He is an active participant in the Percussive Arts Society where he serves as the cochair of the World Percussion Committee. Los Vecinos is a community of “the neighbors”, who come together to play and perform both Salsa and Cumbia music to a variety of audiences throughout the Los Angeles area and abroad. Los Vecinos was playing at a restaurant I was dining at, and I picked up their card and sent them a DM, a couple of weeks later Lorenzo and Vanessa had me at their wonderful home to discuss the purpose and identity behind Los Vecinos, the deeply rooted history in the music they play, how they function as a business, and to teach me how to play some sweet tunes. I had a blast learning about something I knew absolutely nothing about beforehand, and I hope you do too. Please welcome, Los Vecinos.

About Aura Flores: Aurora Floresbandleader, author, and "badass" performer A Latin from Manhattan, Aurora is a BMI composer, producer, educator & entrepreneur, the recipient of numerous awards and included in Who's Who in Hispanic America. A published author and journalist she broke barriers as the first woman music correspondent for Billboard Magazine while still attending Columbia University. Her name appears on hundreds of Latin music liner notes and thousands of articles on music, culture, community, and politics over mainstream newspapers, magazines, and media outlets. As a BMI composer she writes original music for the Nickelodeon' hit series "Dora the Explorer," and for orchestra Zon del Barrio which she leads and directs performing from New York to the Caribbean to France's Cotes d'Azur. A play on the words "son" a musical genre found throughout the Islands and U.S. barrio "zones" where people of colorwork and struggle hard only to party just as hard —Zon del Barrio is NOT your average grandma's "salsa" group. Zon del Barrio is the intergenerational, creative, and co-ed sound of Latin music genres from the mean streets of El Barrio and the Bronx. The big band expresses her own original songs from a political and women's focus as well as the virtuoso music from the streets of Latin NY that she so misses from the scene today.Aurora can be seen over many documentaries on Latin music, has written for the WNET Latino American series, lectures at colleges and universities, and conducts cultural tours of East Harlem for students and corporate organizations. A break-through renaissance woman, Aurora is an entrepreneurial publicist & award-winning media consultant, writer, and producer. She founded Aurora Communications in 1988 producing national music, culture, and health events from community block parties to sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden as well as providing corporate public relations to various Fortune 500 companies and political campaigns. www.aurora-communications.com

At age 9, Marc Quiñones was introduced by a family friend to salsa legend Tito Puente. Along with long-time collaborator Bobby Allende, Marc was seen as somewhat of a child prodigy in New York salsa circles. Quiñones comes from an impressive lineage of musicians, including father Tony, late uncle Rafael, and younger brother Camilo. The musical roots run deep. Quiñones and Allende would go on to play several high-profile dates with Puente, including Carnegie Hall before they were even old enough to drive. You might ask, where does one go from there, when you have had the proverbial "mic drop" opportunity of a lifetime to play with a music icon. While playing with contemporary jazz group Spyro Gyra, Quiñones would have a chance meeting that would change his career trajectory for decades to come. It turns out that Butch Trucks, the legendary drummer of the Allman Brothers Band was a big Spyro Gyra fan. While attending a Spyro Gyra show, Trucks was intrigued by Quiñones' playing and went backstage to meet him. The two immediately hit it off. Later that year, Marc was invited to record on a new Allman Brothers record. He would go on to tour and record with the band until 2014 and would also support Gregg Allman's solo work until his death in 2017. Currently, Marc Quiñones plays with his own salsa group 8 y Mas with his production partner Bobby Allende. Later this year, you can catch him touring with Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame group The Doobie Brothers and see him featured in work with arranger, producer Tony Succar.

We start things off with MTV's 2nd Generation hosted by Tony Moran (one half of the Latin Rascals) and Andy Panda. Andy talks about the creation of the show, being picked up for a second season, the representation of Latinos and Latin Hip Hop music and the reasons for the show ultimately being canceled. [zoomsounds_player config="TFC-Player" songname="Second Generation with Andy "Panda" Tripoli" type="detect" source="https://media.blubrry.com/thefreestyleclub/s/https://s3.amazonaws.com/thefreestyleclub/TFC-026.mp3" thumb="https://daunknownadmin.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/TheFreestyleClub-026xBlog.png" alt="Second Generation with Andy "Panda" Tripoli " replace_artistname="Andy Panda, CPR Jose Ortiz, and Nick Colon"] Andy goes on to talk about the genesis of The Cover Girls. He explains how his love of Motown Music and groups like The Supremes and others inspired him to create his own girl group. We set out with the concept and shared his vision with Sal Abbatiello of Fever Records. Eventually, after a few initial replacement, they finalize the members of The Cover Girls and Andy pens Show Me. We examine how Freestyle was "OUR" generation's Salsa Music. We reminisce how our parent would play Salsa Music and how we grew up listening to Salsa Music. Now as we grew up our children, in turn, grew up listening to our version of Salsa Music with Freestyle Music. We also take note of how Old Salseros are not generally known to be accepting of new artists and how that mentality is now present in Freestyle Music. Proving that Andy Panda listens to The Freestyle Club, he sets the record straight on Together Forever and the role that Frankie Cutlass played in the creation of this Freestyle Classic. Andy talks about Tony Moran and his many contributions to the Freestyle Music genre. We wrap up the interview with Andy sharing his upcoming Freestyle Music projects.

Welcome to Episode 8 of the Salsa Kings LIVE podcast! In our latest episode, Andres welcomes in Nicolas Martinez to the show. He is the band leader of Endiya, the hottest band in South Florida. Born in Cuba until he was nine, then brought to United States, he’s been writing since he was eleven. He founded his band in 2006, which has just released their second album. Martinez discusses his experiences in working on his band, as well as his short hiatus due to personal problems, and his work on another grammy-nominated band. He discusses his influences, both personal, and the artists he listened to as a child. He wrote his first song in fifth grade, a rap song. He even performs a bit of it on the show!   He also discusses the evolution of his music and his roots in Cuba. He talks about his starts in dance, the techniques, and the styles that he worked on, and the changes that came as he grew up and how they formed his dance and his music. In addition to the creators that changed his life, he discusses how the cultural history of music and dance influenced his growth. It’s a fascinating trip into the history of Salsa and dance.   The discussion also goes into the ideas of how Salsa is now, and how it’s changed. He talks about the increase in aggression and energy in music. A lot of people need something with new energy and Martinez talks about how Salsa needs to evolve so that its music can reach younger people, rather than languishing and becoming ‘old people music’. The only people looking up Salsa are people who are already interested in the Salsa. Martinez hopes his music will reach out to a younger generation, by making the music and the lyrics appeal more to the current generation. People need to connect to music and enjoy it, and learn how to enjoy that.   Martinez also discusses the future of Salsa. With the challenges ahead with the current standards of salsa and continuing to dance, we need to also look to the future. Martinez has some refreshing frankness in saying that he feels the Salsa boom has passed and that it’s more dancers that are keeping Salsa alive rather than musicians. He notes how younger people are moving to urban music, which Martinez says is more humble and more about connecting than Salsa is.   Martinez provides a fresh perspective on the history of salsa, the interactions with potential new dancers, and just the very fascinating life of a brilliant dancer and musician.  For those who wants a fresh perspective on Salsa, this episode will give you a lot of food for thought.   “It’s about connecting with the people, not only musically, but outside of music. They need to know and feel that not are only are you just like them, but also that you’re just something normal. People try and keep it professional, but often people don’t want that. Sometimes people want to have fun.”

Gian Castro, also known as Goodjob or Goodjob Gian, is a California DJ/producer who keeps his heart in the underground culture of house and techno, and doesn't hesitate to take his audience on an abstract journey through variations of those genres and many more styles of music. Being of South American descent, he was immersed into a colorful world of percussive rhythms, Andean Melodies, Afro-Peruvian Folk, as well as Salsa Music almost since birth. That, along with growing up during Hip-Hop’s Hey Day and witnessing the evolution of house and techno, has made him a well-versed artist. That influence and craftsmanship really shows during his performances. Having played alongside artists such as DJ Dan, DJ Three, Doc Martin, Marques Wyatt, and Christian Martin of Dirtybird Records, has really helped his career flourish, gaining him recognition and bookings all over California and even overseas.
