The Lancaster Asian American and Pacific Islanders (LAAPI) began with a group of Asian Americans searching for a larger community. According to Brian Nguyen, Communications chair of LAAPI, says the organization began post pandemic after the Atlanta, Georgia shootings. “There was a pressing need to amplify AAPI voices and foster connections and wanting to at least celebrate our identities and the contributions that the Asian community has and not just have these stereotypes of us out there about us spreading COVID to being only good at math and just being very docile and quiet behind closed doors.” LAAPI evolved into a large community gathering and brought the first ever Lunar New Year in 2023. “I remember, at least for me personally, I cried when we were in that space because one, it was after the shooting and we were really nervous and we didn't know what the turnout will be, but we received a lot of messages of support and wanting us to push forward with it. And the overwhelming public response to this event led to the formal establishment of us as an organization.” Listen to the podcast to hear more about LAAPI.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, hosts Dr. Kevin Chu and Dr. Justin Dubin engage in a timely discussion about the evolving landscape of male birth control options. With limited access to abortion services in many states, the need for men to take responsibility in family planning has never been more crucial. The hosts welcome Dr. Brian Nguyen, a leading expert in complex family planning and associate professor at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Dr. Nguyen shares valuable insights into the promising developments in male contraceptives currently in clinical trials, emphasizing the importance of providing men with effective, temporary options. While the hosts advocate for vasectomies as a permanent solution for those who no longer wish to have children, they recognize that not everyone is ready for that step. They discuss the potential of various innovative methods, including the role of testosterone as a male contraceptive, and clarify common misconceptions about male fertility while on testosterone therapy. Learn more about the significance of expanding contraceptive options for men and how this can positively impact family planning. More than 60 years after a birth control pill was developed for women, there is still no similar federally approved drug for men. But promising results from a new gel for men might finally change that. Early results show it blocks sperm production after two to three months of daily use. William Brangham discussed more with Dr. Brian Nguyen. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
Male birth control may be on its way – in gel form. It's a hormonal gel that men rub on their shoulders, which has been developed at the University of Southern California (USC). USC Obstetrician-Gynaecologist, Dr Brian Nguyen told Jack Tame “It's very similar to female contraceptive methods – we have so much experience with it.” Nguyen said “The entire factory is left intact, you're just telling factory to stop production.” LISTEN ABOVE. What you'll get out of this episodeListen in as host Tim Fitzpatrick chats with Owen Willis about the role of education across stakeholders and systems in healthcare. Owen discusses the power of education in creating patient ownership and enabling frontline clinicians to focus on delivering great care (and less so on whether the information is complete, accurate and up to date). Owen also dives into the challenges of clinician retention, risks surrounding the patient-clinician relationship, and how education can play a role in reducing risk for patients, providers and systems alike. In this episode you'll discover: The majority of healthcare education content is targeted at clinicians and providers, which means most patients struggle to understand important health information. From the provider's point of view, there is a big difference between learning content in a school setting and applying it in the practice of medicine, nursing or frontline care. How providers are always learning new information and new discoveries as knowledge of the human body evolves, which means providers need to be able to access, understand, and teach the updated information to their patients. The playbook for building effective partnerships between founders and internal champions, and why founders need to have their stories down, find their champions, and build support and “whisper networks” around that long-term vision. Why startup champions inside large healthcare organizations should understand risk dynamics and share candid feedback with founders and their teams. Quotables“As a system, we are not especially good at training people on becoming doctors, we are really good at training them in terms of how to learn medicine. We are not very good about training them around the business of medicine or necessarily the application of medicine. So, as somebody goes into practice, what ends up happening is, they require more content that I would describe as just-in-time learning.” @jowenwillis on Ep 25 @T-Minus10 w/ @trfitzpatrick“One of the elephants in the room that people just don't really seem to be willing to talk about, is the crisis that we are facing around clinician retention. Being a doctor is an exceptionally difficult job, and the big challenge is, as we are looking to bring more patients in and looking to expand access as sort of who can get care in the US, we are also looking at the exodus of skilled professionals and a limited top of funnel supply coming in from our training programs.” @jowenwillis on Ep 25 @T-Minus10 w/ @trfitzpatrickRecommended Resources Getting To Conviction in Health Tech (Long on Humanity) Building A Better Healthcare Hammer (Long on Humanity) Deploying digital health tools within large, complex health systems: key considerations for adoption and implementation (Nature) Join the ConversationAre you a healthcare innovator? The number one way to prevent an unplanned pregnancy (apart from abstinence) is with contraception. But why does so much of that burden fall on women? In an eye-opening conversation about the development of male birth control, Dr. Brian Nguyen and Dr. Stephanie Page reframe pregnancy as an equally shared responsibility between two partners. They trace a line between the Dobbs v. Jackson decision and the need for male contraception, discuss the clinical trials happening right now, and explain why it's a step toward building a culture of gender equity. Brian @brikbneezy is the hottest new star on the @performbetter Summit Series! I met Brian for the 1st time at the Long Beach Summit and knew instantly that this guy had the “IT FACTOR” It has been great to get to know Brian who has a lust for life and a passion for helping others achieve their dreams. Brian has been able to rise above the fame he received from working with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars like Adam Sandler, Will Ferrel, Mila Kunis and sport stars Blake Griffin and the Rob "The Gronk” Gronkowski. To top it off Brian was also an integral part of the real Mark Wahlberg entourage for 9 years! But all that means nothing when you get down to what truly makes Brian special.
