In 1893, an American backed coup d'état overthrew the royal government of Hawai'i, setting the stage for the archipelago's annexation by the United States five years later. On 7th July 1898, President McKinley signed the Newlands Resolution annexing the islands and creating a new US territory in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  This example of naked imperial aggression set the stage for the economic and political transformation of Hawai'i. The American naval presence was greatly expanded as too was the plantation-based economy. However, Americanization was also felt in the cultural sphere, through the transformation of the education system. How did American rule change the Hawaiian education system? What were the objectives of this transformation? And how did this affect the people of the islands? Dr. Michelle Morgan Michelle Morgan is an associate professor and coordinator of the BSED-history program at Missouri State University.  She completed her PhD in American History with a minor in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her teaching and research focus on the history of American education, the American West, and American empire. Her work explores the roles schools have played in competing definitions of “American” in newly acquired territories, emphasizing the participation of teachers as cultural agents and the ways in which gender and identity shape teachers' roles in classrooms and communities.    Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. The Real Way to Get Mentally Tough: Matt Fitzgerald   The biggest difference between elites and the rest of us is not simply talent; it’s mental resilience. Matt Fitzgerald has been studying elites his entire career and has learned what techniques the best of the best use to get there. In his new book, The Comeback Quotient, Matt talks about a philosophy called ultrarealism and how we can all apply it to add some extra oomph to our training and push to the next level.   Matt is a well-known endurance sports author, coach, and nutritionist. His many books include How Bad Do You Want It?, 80/20 Running, and The Endurance Diet. Matt’s writing has also appeared in numerous magazines, including Outside and Runner’s World, and on popular websites such as podiumrunner.com and nbcnews.com. He is a cofounder and co-head coach of 80/20 Endurance and the creator of the Diet Quality Score smartphone app. A lifelong endurance athlete, he speaks frequently at events throughout the United States and internationally.   Matt’s work has given him access to some great athletes who have shared their secrets about what it takes to truly become the best in the world, and it’s not just about raw talent or genetics; it’s about the mind. It’s about leveraging science and psychology and philosophy into mental toughness. In The Comeback Quotient, Matt combines those elements that he’s compiled from the best in sport to deliver actionable advice and techniques that any athlete can use to improve.    If you haven’t heard of David Goggins, look him up. He overcame an abusive upbringing to transform himself into a Navy Seal, Air Force Ranger, and competitive ultramarathoner, and he is undeniably one of the toughest minds out there. He’s just one example from Matt’s book that he and Coach Claire discuss as they talk about the qualities that athletes like David have that we can all develop in ourselves.   Matt’s new book The Comeback Quotient comes out in December 2020, and if you are as interested in training your mind to be as fit as your body, make sure you get a copy!        Questions Matt is asked:   6:15 You've written several books on endurance fitness that also seem to have a healthy dose of psychology woven in.  What is it about the mental side of the sport that interests you so much?   7:49 I have two little kids, and when they run, they run as fast as they can and then completely poop out. They have no sense of pacing or anything like that, so obviously that’s something that we have to learn.   8:30 Your new book that’s coming out is called The Comeback Quotient.  Can you give us a summary of what it's about and why you wanted to write it?   9:56 One thing that you talked a lot about in your book was a philosophy called ultra-realism.  Can you explain what that is and why it's important not just for athletes, but for life?   12:24 It sounds so simple when you say, “Just make the best out of it.” How simple is that? But why is it so hard?   14:16 If our brain is so good at predicting, then what do we do when we haven’t thought out a way to get around the obstacle?   16:50 How do you override everything your brain is telling you when you’re in pain?   18:51 You did have a few examples in your book of people who like David Goggins and the Slovenian skier who won Olympic bronze after she had punctured a lung and broken a bunch of ribs. I don't want to be that mentally tough!!! That just sounds pretty stupid some of these things though. Where’s that line?   20:39 Besides just reading your book, how can athletes actively practice mental fitness?  It's pretty simple to learn how to physically run your best, but how do you mentally train? Any advice with that?   23:59 You definitely have some stories in the book about people freaking out and things not going so well.   26:37 You basically said to some of the athletes that you’ve coached to stop BSing themselves, and sometimes that’s some realism that’s hard to hear too.   28:13 One thing I definitely have done in a race myself is BSed myself in a positive way and told myself, “It doesn’t hurt. It’s fine. Nothing is wrong here. You can keep going,” when that’s not really the way I feel at all. So I don’t know how that falls into it. I feel like I’m lying to myself in a positive way, if that makes sense.   31:02 Another thing that struck me is a lot of sort of… I don’t know if we call this a self-help book, but a lot of books that are trying to get into the psychology of performance, they only talk about the really positive things. This is called The Comeback Quotient. We’re expecting to read a whole bunch of comeback stories and have everybody get the gold medal at the end, but you included several people who didn’t come back “successfully,” and I’d love to hear about why you chose to do that?   34:02 I think there’s a lot of people, especially new runners, seem to struggle with accepting things that don’t go as expected. Would you say that?   36:37 Another part of the book was your personal journey to train for a triathlon using the mental training techniques that you learned from the ultra-realists.  Without giving too much away, what were some of the lessons that you applied for yourself?   39:54 One thing I thought about when reading your race report is it’s very common for people to set goals. So you’ve got your A goal, shoot-the-moon goal, B goal, C goal, but most people aren’t really happy with that C goal. I think that maybe being actually happy with your C goal is like a mental trick that you can do because you didn’t get your A goal in your triathlon, right? And you’re still super, super happy. And how is that possible? How are you not upset that you didn’t get your A goal?   41:44 When does the book come out and what's next for you? Questions I ask everyone:   43:22 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   44:09 What is the greatest gift running has given you?   45:12 Where can listeners and charities connect with you?   Quotes by Matt:   “I’m still running at 49 and I just believe that the most obtrusive barriers in endurance sports are the mental barriers.”   “The people who are able to make the very best of the very worst situations in endurance sports, they do so through a process of just facing reality.”   “Whether or not you’re already the most resilient person in the world, if you simply just copy what the ultra-realists are doing, you will start to develop those qualities.”   “You’re not dependent on reality, kind of the stars aligning. It just doesn’t matter. You can succeed in any situation simply by making the best of it even if the end result is not what you originally wanted.”   “It is about the process. Ultimately, when it comes down to it, like you have one race day for every 100 training days or whatever, so those training days you should be enjoying.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? We are happy to have Sharon Fisher, the CEO and Founder of the company, Play With A Purpose, joining us on the show today! Sharon has been playing with a purpose for the last thirty years, and she has been doing it with the clear objective of helping organizations integrate fun into their learning processes. In today's episode, Sharon discusses the difference between engagement and content. You will learn that you do not have to choose either one or the other because you need both, so Sharon explains how to blend engagement and content. She also talks about engaging virtually in our current day and age.  Sharon Fisher's Bio Enthusiastic. Relevant. Creative. Sharon Fisher is the CEO & Chief IdeaSparker of Play with a Purpose, an experiential strategy firm devoted to sparking more innovative, participatory, connected, and fun learning events. They custom design play-based experiences to help organizations solve challenges innovatively and compellingly.   A passionate advocate for the power of PLAY in business, Sharon and her team create interactions that make a point, generate ideas, facilitate learning, create connections, inspire change, and make people laugh. Whether your event is virtual or live (or one of the many combos in between) you can show courageous leadership by infusing more play.    Sharon's crazy obsession with play started in college. When all her friends were getting “real degrees”, she chose to major in “whistleblowing” as her father called her BSED degree in Recreation. Since then, she's created with clients including Disney Imagineering & Disney Publishing, Chevrolet, Camp Jeep, BBDO, Novartis, American Express, Frito Lay, CarMax, IBM, McDonald's, and the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission. The winner of numerous awards, her most prized includes being named one of Orlando's Best Places to Work and setting two Guinness World Records.   Her highly energetic & interactive workshop-style consistently delights audiences and makes learning fun.   People thought she was crazy When Sharon told her friends she was going to start a business that was all about play, they told her she was crazy, and she would never make it because there was neither enough business out there nor enough people who would be willing to pay her to do that.  Unfazed Sharon was unfazed. She decided to take a chance anyway to see what would happen. An inspiring quote Sharon truly loves what she does! For all her life, a quote from the author, James Michener, has inspired her. “The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor, and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information, and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both.” James A. Michener When you love what you do Sharon explains that when you love doing something, you are willing to devote the time, energy, and effort that it takes to learn more and to keep on building it. You also invest the curiosity that is needed to keep inventing and to stay ahead and stay practical in the game. A melding of work and play in your life Sharon explains that when you are doing something that you truly love, you never turn off because everything always flows, and you are always alert to the opportunities in work to laugh, have fun, and bring joy to what you are doing. And in play, you have the chance to get inspired for new things to do at work.  Why you should stop separating engagement and content People go to meetings to learn, to meet other people, and to engage and network with them. At meetings, the content and learning are usually separate from the engagement, and Sharon has never understood why engagement and content get seen as two distinctly different things. She believes that they should get blended, and people should figure out ways to put more engagement into the learning pieces for a better outcome and better results. Skill sets and passion The passion and skill set of an awesome logistics person differs from that of a designer or a strategist. The perfect design It makes no sense to Sharon to focus only on logistics in a meeting without considering the content, the purpose, the strategy, and the results. The perfect design has not yet been found for organizing teams to maximize the skill sets that come from the different halves of the brain. The team The results of an event usually depend on the team leader, and how the team members are integrated and made to feel like part of the bigger picture, rather than the details. The team needs to understand the purpose, the strategy, and the vision of the meeting before thinking about how to engage people. Learn Feel Do Sharon learned to use a simple tool called Learn Feel Do, which she has adapted to suit her needs, to get everyone on the same page for setting the ground and knowing where they are going with a meeting. Re-engaging the brain People's brains need to be re-engaged every ten minutes in a physical meeting, and every four minutes in an online meeting. If that does not happen, people will tune out and they will not be able to retain much of what they have learned. A framework At Play With A Purpose, they are all about understanding what you want people to know. They use a framework to determine what kind of game, activity, or interaction will work best to help accomplish the learning that is needed. Working online Working online does not mean that you cannot be interacting together. To make things work online, however, the interaction needs to be restructured or reformatted a little. The Better News Network event The Better News Network event used to be a live event. It has now successfully transitioned to being a hybrid and virtual event. Sharon's tip for online sessions Online sessions do not have to be short. They need to be engaging to be good. We talked about her experience with trying to find a job after Culinary School; applying anywhere and everywhere including places as far as ALASKA! We talked about sarcasm and BSed for a little while and THEN we got into the juicy stuff. We shared our stories about weight obsession, moralizing food, and throwing away our bathroom scales. On this episode, I Zoom in Sonya Harris and we chat about how to start a school garden. Born and raised in Paulsboro, New Jersey, Sonya Harris is a Teacher of Special Education at the Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School, in Glassboro, NJ. She received her BSEd in Special Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and is a 20+ year teaching veteran, with residence at Bullock for over 12 years, where she is now known as the “Garden Teacher” for her role in bringing an organic edible garden to the school. In the fall of 2013, Sonya gathered a group of teachers together to plan a garden at the Bullock School, which could be used as a space to teach students across the curriculum through gardening. She contacted celebrity landscaper Ahmed Hassan via social media for advice. Not only did he respond to her message a few hours later, he advised her and her Bullock Garden Team on what was needed to establish a sustainable school garden. Ahmed connected Sonya with local South Jersey landscape designer, Mike Pasquarello of Elite Landscaping in Berlin, NJ. Together, after almost a year of planning, partnerships with landscape and horticultural experts from across the country, sponsored donations and fundraising efforts, the Bullock Elementary Children's Garden became a reality the weekend of May 2-3, 2015. In October 2016, Sonya was awarded the very first “Best in New Jersey” Jersey Fresh Farm-to-School Award by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture for her drive in ensuring that the Bullock Children's Garden serves as a tool for assisting teachers in teaching children across the curriculum through garden education, provides free, fresh, organic produce to the local low-income community, where the school is located (helping to eliminate a food desert) and for partnering with several organizations and green industry leaders to ensure successful learning opportunities for the Bullock Elementary students. She also runs an after-school club for at-risk children, teaching them the value of gardening, growing your own food, caring for the earth, and using interaction with nature to reduce feelings of frustration, anger, and depression. She loves spending time gardening at home and with the children at the school garden. Sonya is also currently leading the expansion of the garden education initiative throughout the Glassboro School District and with the Borough of Glassboro to increase sustainability awareness and Green initiatives. She is currently mentoring several schools across the United States assisting them in creating school gardens, and partners with members and organizations in the Green Industry across the United States, Australia, UK, and South Africa. In 2017 Sonya established the nonprofit The Bullock Garden Project, Inc. The role of this nonprofit is to assist schools serving large populations of students who are at-risk, receiving special education services, and/or low-income and food insecurity with establishing and implementing school gardens. She has won several awards, including the most recent awards: New Jersey Agricultural Society's Learning Through Gardening 2018 Teacher of the Year, and Project Green Schools 2018 Outstanding Green Education Program Director.
