A blind oud player from humble beginnings, Sheikh Imam's destiny changed drastically when he met a dissident poet called Ahmed Fouad Negm in 1960s Cairo, and they formed a duo. Together, they would go on start a new era in Egyptian popular music. Their songs would shake regimes, travel the world on cassette tapes, and transcend their own time to become part of the soundtrack to Egypt's revolution decades later. And they managed all of this while dealing with constant harassment by the state - including long periods in prison. The story features two historians, one of Sheikh Imam's collaborators, and a university lecturer who's parents used to host Sheikh Imam's concerts in their living room. The songs in this episode were composed and performed by Sheikh Imam and written by Ahmed Fouad Negm and Zein Alabidin Fouad. Lyric translations by Ahmed Hassan and Elliott Colla. This episode was produced by Kerning Cultures Podcast—Nadeen Shaker, Heba El-Sherif, and Alex Atack, and edited by Dana Ballout. Fact checking was by Deena Sabry and sound design, music, and mixing by Monzer El Hachem. Voice over by Eihab Seoudi, and translation help from Maha El Kady. Cover art by Ahmad Salhab. Many thanks to Kerning Cultures / Stories from the Middle East, North Africa, and the spaced in between.

Egypt's January 25 revolution was 11 years ago. Since then many of its young leaders have been persecuted and the history of what happened distorted or denied. We look at writing that remembers and resists. Alaa Abd El-Fattah's You Have Not Yet Been Defeatedwas translated by a collective, and is out from Fizcarraldo Editions in the UK. A US edition is forthcoming in March 2022 from Seven Stories Press. There is also an Italian translation by Monica Ruocco. Ahmed Douma's second poetry collection, Curly, was set for release in September 2021 by Dar Maraya. But on the eve of its publication, state security officials confiscated copies of the book. Read Elliott Colla and Ahmed Hassan's co-translations of a poem from this collection, and an excerpt from Douma's “Blasphemy,” on ArabLit. Basma Abdelaziz's Here is a Body, which chronicles the Rabaa massacre and its aftermath, was published in Jonathan Wright's translation by Hoopoe Fiction. You can read an excerpt on the Hoopoe website. Also, join our #bulaqbookquiz for a chance to win a release from one of ten participating publishers. Send your answers to bulaq@sowt.com.

E84 - We are proud to have Ahmed Hassan back co-hosting with us, and to be a platform for these important voices. We put together a panel of California cops - a black female police officer, a white female police officer, and a black male police officer - to discuss what they’ve seen and what they know from their experiences in law enforcement. You’ll hear why they chose this career and their thoughts on brutality, protests, and defunding the police. You’ll learn their insights into quotas, racial profiling, sundowning laws, the code of silence, and what is really happening in the station and on the streets in their profession. How do the ‘bad apples’ make it onto the force and is this issue as prevalent as we’re seeing in the media? This is an eye-opening discussion spanning many years and many perspectives. We came out of it with a new viewpoint and wonder if you might too. HGTV’,DIY,“Yard Crashers”,“The Dirt On” “Green Me Up”, “Blog Cabin,” is where you have ssen Ahmad At the age of 10, Ahmed discovered his love of gardening and working outdoors. To many children, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and stacking wood would be considered mundane chores. Not to Ahmed. With each completed task, he was building confidence and moving closer to his purpose in life, teaching others the importance of combining creativity with hard work. Ahmed’s love of landscaping paved the way to a successful career as one of today’s most sought after Celebrity Landscape professionals and Green Industry Experts In 2007 he began hosting gardening shows for DIY Network. Having been featured on several episodes of HGTV’s “Landscape Smart”, Ahmed was sought after to become a network host for sister network DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Network. In 2008 he and his team surprised homeowners and viewers with customized residential landscapes and upgraded homes on DIY Network’s “Yard Crashers”. Following a series of hosting stints for numerous DIY Network shows including, “The Dirt On…,” “Green Me Up” and “Blog Cabin,” the network created the Yard Crashers series around Ahmed’s authentic high energy, motivational spirit and his love of people and beautiful outdoor spaces. Each week, millions of viewers are charmed by his engaging personality and unique style of education blended with entertainment. The “Crashers” brand and format was born with spin off shows House Crashers, Bath Crashers, Room Crashers and Kitchen Crashers. Ahmed also hosted a couple seasons of a landscape competition show, “Turf War” on DIY Network. Landscape gardening has never before been showcased in a way that was so exciting to watch on television. Ahmed has co-hosted and consulted for The Nate Berkus Show where he led the residential landscape design for Monica “Warrior Mom” Jorge’s house. He also co-hosted HGTV’s live coverage of the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade. He regularly serves as guest contributor for both CBS Early Show and NBC’s Today Show. He is a guest columnist for several industry publications and HGTV magazine. In 2013 Ahmed began shooting web and promotional videos for various Green Industry companies. Ahmed Hassan is a self taught landscape designer that began working as a professional maintenance gardener at the age of 15. The 25-year expert is a California licensed Landscape Contractor (C-27), and PLANET Certified Landscape Maintenance Technician. He and his wife Tiffanie own and operate Ahmad Hassan Landscape Services (AHLS) a landscape consulting, design and installation firm. Ahmed has collaborated and worked on several landscape and construction projects throughout the country. Though speaking and doing landscape construction projects on television is what he enjoys most. Ahmed considers himself a hustler that took gardening very serious. He wanted to improve his hustle and earning potential so he began taking horticulture classes in 1995. By 2010 he found himself hosting multiple shows and teaching television viewers all of what he knew, but in a way that was relatable and entertaining. He believes, “When it comes to landscape and construction projects, organized collaboration with other qualified professionals will always net the most creative, most enjoyable and ultimately, successful results.” The California native has spent most of his life in the Sacramento and greater Bay Area. He attributes his success in life to his many years of sobriety and the support and spiritual philosophy of his blended family. His entrepreneurial parents taught him the value of creating a business with the work you enjoy most. Ahmed’s rural roots, mixed with inner city upbringing, has given him a unique ability to relate to people from all walks of life. The connective thread through each stage of his life remains Agriculture, Construction, Improvements and Maintenance. “The status quo is boring and complacent. I envision and enjoy making things better and I prefer to do this outdoors”, says Ahmed. Ahmed began spelling his name with an “e” for phonetic reasons when he became a TV host. His legal name is Ahmad Hasan Hassan, pronounced (Ahh-med). Ahmed, his wife and 3 children reside in Northern California’s foothills. On this episode, I Zoom in Sonya Harris and we chat about how to start a school garden. Born and raised in Paulsboro, New Jersey, Sonya Harris is a Teacher of Special Education at the Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School, in Glassboro, NJ. She received her BSEd in Special Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and is a 20+ year teaching veteran, with residence at Bullock for over 12 years, where she is now known as the “Garden Teacher” for her role in bringing an organic edible garden to the school. In the fall of 2013, Sonya gathered a group of teachers together to plan a garden at the Bullock School, which could be used as a space to teach students across the curriculum through gardening. She contacted celebrity landscaper Ahmed Hassan via social media for advice. Not only did he respond to her message a few hours later, he advised her and her Bullock Garden Team on what was needed to establish a sustainable school garden. Ahmed connected Sonya with local South Jersey landscape designer, Mike Pasquarello of Elite Landscaping in Berlin, NJ. Together, after almost a year of planning, partnerships with landscape and horticultural experts from across the country, sponsored donations and fundraising efforts, the Bullock Elementary Children's Garden became a reality the weekend of May 2-3, 2015. In October 2016, Sonya was awarded the very first “Best in New Jersey” Jersey Fresh Farm-to-School Award by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture for her drive in ensuring that the Bullock Children's Garden serves as a tool for assisting teachers in teaching children across the curriculum through garden education, provides free, fresh, organic produce to the local low-income community, where the school is located (helping to eliminate a food desert) and for partnering with several organizations and green industry leaders to ensure successful learning opportunities for the Bullock Elementary students. She also runs an after-school club for at-risk children, teaching them the value of gardening, growing your own food, caring for the earth, and using interaction with nature to reduce feelings of frustration, anger, and depression. She loves spending time gardening at home and with the children at the school garden. Sonya is also currently leading the expansion of the garden education initiative throughout the Glassboro School District and with the Borough of Glassboro to increase sustainability awareness and Green initiatives. She is currently mentoring several schools across the United States assisting them in creating school gardens, and partners with members and organizations in the Green Industry across the United States, Australia, UK, and South Africa. In 2017 Sonya established the nonprofit The Bullock Garden Project, Inc. The role of this nonprofit is to assist schools serving large populations of students who are at-risk, receiving special education services, and/or low-income and food insecurity with establishing and implementing school gardens. She has won several awards, including the most recent awards: New Jersey Agricultural Society's Learning Through Gardening 2018 Teacher of the Year, and Project Green Schools 2018 Outstanding Green Education Program Director.
