Tatra 87 (1936) 4. Citroën DS (1955) 5. Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (1959) 6. Chevrolet Corvair (1959) 7. Saab 96 (1960) 8. Toyota Land Cruiser J40 (1960) 9. Jaguar E-Type (1961) 10. Shelby Cobra (1961) 11. Volvo P1800 (1961) 12. Aston Martin DB5 (1963) 12+1. Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray (1964) 14. Messerschmitt KR175-200 (1964) 15. Alfa Romeo Giulia Súper (1965) 16. Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider Duetto (1966) 17. Jensen Interceptor (1966) 18. NSU Ro80 (1967) 19. Citroën SM (1970) 20. Plymouth Road Runner Superbird (1970) 21. De Tomaso Pantera (1971) 22. Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (1972) 23. AMC Pacer (1975) 24. Renault 5 Turbo (1980) 25. Alfa Romeo Giulietta (1981) 26. Ford Sierra Cosworth (1986) 27. Ford Escort Cosworth (1992) 28. Honda Civic Type R (1997) 29. TVR Sagaris (2004) 30.

The seventh edition of the Sydney Harbour Concours d’ Elegance at the end of this month will see possibly the most diverse and exotic range of collector cars in the history of the event. To be staged again on historic Cockatoo Island over the three days from Friday Feb 28 to Sunday March 2 this classic event just gets better year on year. The range of entries this year span from 1905 to 2021 - many extremely rare including a 1930 Bugatti Type 46, 1936 Delahaye Type 135CS and a 1973 Porsche 917. Now internationally recognised as the Southern Hemisphere’s leading concours event it has also drawn a truly international judging jury of seven from all corners of the globe including ex Formula One driver Thierry Boutsen from Belgium. As the Australian judge I very much look forward to this annual event. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Visiting a grandparent as a youngster often includes affection, treats and wisdom, all offered for free. It leads to buying a Bugatti in parts for $150,000 less frequently. Nathanael Greene's childhood visits to New Hampshire resulted in his 65-year history with the iconic automobile introduced by Italian-French carmaker Ettore Bugatti in 1924. Greene owns three, including the 1925 Bugatti Type 35 he's competed in at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for many years beginning in 1997. The former investment executive was my recent guest on The Weekly Driver Podcast during this year's automotive gathering, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. He participated for five straight days in his rare vehicle. Nathanael Greene, 80, and his 1925 Bugatti Type at Weather Raceway Laguna Seca. All images @ James Raia/2022 While co-host Bruce Aldrich was on vacation, talked with Greene about his lifelong passion for cars and his three Bugattis. "I was visiting my grandmother in New Hampshire; I must have been 12 or 14," Greene explained. "One day, there was this blue car going vroom down the street and vroom coming the other way, several different times. "I thought, 'this is fantastic.' I had no idea at the time. Jump forward at least 20 years and I buy my grandmother's house. I got to know the neighbor. He bought Bugatti Type 43 in 1952. He was a great car enthusiast, a great Bugatti enthusiast." The Bugatti undergoing road tests on suburban New England streets was given to Greene's neighbor to sell. It became hugely successful in Europe. It also impressed Greene to the degree that bought his 1925 Bugatti Type in 1997. It was in parts. Nathanael Greene owns three Bugattis. He participates in vintage races around the country. "It (the Type 35) had been taken apart 20 years earlier," said Greene. "But the guy bought another car, concentrated on that and this one got pushed to the back and nothing was done for a long time. I came along and said I would buy it and he said OK." Greene's passion for Bugatti combines his keen interests in fine mechanics, driving, history and the umbrella of the automobile industry. He no longer works on the Bugatti Type 35, but he knows the minutiae of the brand and originator's varied innovation. Greene also has two daily drivers, a Suburb Outback and a Volkswagen Sportwagen diesel. "Bugattis were never the fastest cars, but they were the easiest to drive," he said. "The races were generally 300 to 500 miles. Cars like Maserati would simply wear the drivers out. Everything about this car is so light." The Type 35, is a three-valve, two-liter engine with a four-speed transmission. It weighs 1,700 pounds and has 90 horsepower. The vehicle was driven to more than 1,000 wins, including the 1926 Grand Prix World Championship. Nathanael Greene lives in New Hampshire. He participate in vintage car events at Laguna Seca since 1997 in his 1925 Bugatti. Greene's father was an engineer who had more interest in steam than cars. The younger Greene has a degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University. "I think somewhere between the ages of 12 and 15 there wasn't anything I owned that I hadn't taken apart and put back together," said Greene who retired from an investment management career in 2004. Greene only competes in his Type 35 and has completed more than 500 laps at Laguna Seca. He has also completed the Mille Miglia, the 1,0000-mile roundtrip event for vintage cars from Brescia to Rome. As a vintage race competitor, Greene defines the events as competitions of respect. "For racing, I think the pre-war is the best because everybody really respects the cars much more than the modern cars," he said. "Everybody is really careful. In some ways, it's more high-speed driving around the track as much as it is racing. I am never going to win. I know that. It's the experience." As an octogenarian, Greene says his driving skills, including reaction instincts,

Photo © Benjamin Asket / Virage Agency Vous aimez cet épisode ? Abonnez-vous ! El Garaje Hermético de Máximo Sant
Restomod, clásicos a estrenar. ¿Sacrilegio o genialidad?

El Garaje Hermético de Máximo Sant

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2021 19:13

-Mirad este R5 Turbo 3… ¿Te parece un sacrilegio? Se trata de un Restomod… ¡Ah! -Renault 5 Turbo 3 by Legende Automobiles -Porsche Carrera by Singer Vehicle Design -Jaguar Mk2 by Classic Callum Car Restoration -Lancia Stratos by LB Specialist Cars STR -Volkswagen Bulli E by Volkswagen Conclusión "by Garaje Hermético" No guste o no, esta moda sí ha llegado para quedarse.

Having a transaxle is one of the most reliable signs that a car is cool. At least that’s the theory — and we’re not talking about front-wheel-drive cars here. In this episode, Derek and Jason discuss front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars that have their transmission mounted in back. There are only a handful of transaxle sedans ever made, and they’re all cool. There are only slightly more sports cars engineered with this layout. Why? There are benefits (weight distribution) but drawbacks (packaging). Allegedly overcaffeinated, Jason pulls out Wikipedia’s list of every transaxle car ever made, and then goes on a rant about hating the Porsche 928. Which just allows Derek to go on a rant about how great Lancia was. Only a Carmudgeon could go on a rant about something positive. But the boys cover them all: the Porsche 924, 944, 968, and 928; Lancia Flaminia, Aston Martin Rapide, Lancia Aurelia, Nissan GT-R, De Deion Bouton, Stutz Bearcat, Bugatti Type 46, Skoda Popular, Pegaso Z102, DAF 600, Pontiac Tempest, Ferrari 275, Ferrari 400, Ferrari 365 GTC/4, Ferrari 330 2+2, Volvo 300-series, Alfa Romeo Alfetta, GTV6, Milano, 75, SZ, and RZ, Panoz Esperante, Plymouth Prowler, Shelby Series 1, Maserati Coupe and Spyder, Alfa Romeo 8C, and of course the Lexus LF-A. Plus, Jason tries to educate Derek on the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. John Bothwell is the Director at Pur Sang in Parana, Argentina where he and his talented team manufacture historic sports cars. Pur Sang builds over 20 cars a year in over 25 different models including Alfa Romeo and Mercedes with most popular being the Bugatti Type 35 B racecar. Those cars won over 1,000 races back in their day. Pur Sang was founded decades ago by Leonidas Jorge Anadón. He is a master restorer with a fascination for Bugatti. He copied a real Type 35 while restoring one and began making authentic reproductions. Pur Sang replicates all of the original manufacturing methods from the 20s and 30s to exacting, hand craftsmanship and their automobiles are truly works of art. You’ve most likely seen John on Jay Leno’s Garage and Jay owns several Pur Sang built cars.

Curator insights - Australian galleries

James Angus’s sculptures usually find their subject in things that already exist in the world. His works can be divided into two main spheres, natural creatures and man-made, often architectural structures or manufactured forms. Living things are realised in versions that emphasise their sculptural nature, and inanimate objects are shifted through a series of propositions about physics, gravity and geometry. In ‘Manta Ray’ 2002, the horizontal mass and undulating curves of the creature are eerily still and perfectly hydrodynamic. In ‘Seagram Building’ 2000, a slightly arching version of the modernist icon lies displaced on the floor. Its curving profile is a subtle distortion that is mathematically correct, but physically improbable and visually disorienting. For ‘Bugatti Type 35’ Angus has taken one of the most iconic racing cars of the 20th century, replicated it, but also distorted it through a gravitational shift 30 degrees to the right. While Angus’s art is not minimal, it shares minimalism’s interest in primary structures and physical presence, and suggests that their source may be found in much earlier developments in modernist architecture and design such as the use of serial repeated forms, manufactured units, structuring grids and highly finished surfaces. The physical and perceptual disorientation of the sculptures, achieved through a mathematically correct displacement of rational geometry, bends our experience of these familiar iconic objects. This immaculate car from the 1920s designed for speed, an ultimate symbol of the modern age and mechanical progress, can no longer support itself upright and tips over, strangely drawn out, its circular wheels becoming ellipses. It seems the real manifestation of the famous early 20th century image by French photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue of a car speeding past, the limitations of photography’s technology seemingly making its wheels stretch. Bugatti’s car was exceptional because of the visionary solutions he devised for engineering problems. In part the originality of Bugatti’s vision can be attributed to his art school training and artistic talent before he entered into car design. Angus retrieves this immaculately engineered machine and returns it to being art, through both replication and intervention. Angus proposes alternate perceptual models that are inherent in geometry’s rigorous spatial logic and mathematical precision, suggesting other ways, at least in sculptural form, in which we may view the world.
