Every year, Wine Enthusiast releases a new edition of the vintage chart, a tool that's long been critical to collectors. Vintage charts help pinpoint bottles peaking in quality—and those that may be past their prime. The most recent version debuted in the Winter Issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. But in a time when climate chaos—unprecedented periods of drought, heat waves, floods, fire and more—is rampant, how should one read a vintage chart? And can we still trust them? In this episode of the Wine Enthusiast Podcast, we've tapped Writer-at-Large Christina Pickard for her thoughts. Pickard reviews wines from Australia, New Zealand, England and New York for our publication and has for years been one of the many voices helping craft the vintage chart. For more than a year now, Wine Enthusiast Writer-at-Large Michael Alberty has been tracking a story about the Oregon Health Authority and some questionable PSAs it ran at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. At that time, the spots—running widely in Oregon—seemed at the very least heavy-handed and ponderous. At the worst, they indicated a growing influence of out-of-state lobbying groups bent on shaping Oregon's health policy. At that time, another "Dry January" period, we talked about how that particular social media trend had its roots in temperance organizations in Europe and the United Kingdom with much more radical agendas than new year/new you. One of them, Movendi International, traces its beginnings back to the 1800s in America and played a key role in instituting Prohibition (the first one). Alberty's full story, titled "The Neo-Prohibitionists Are Coming," appears in the upcoming Winter Issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Here, we delve into some of the details of his investigation. It's a fascinating lens into the discussion of alcohol and health (and politics) into sharp focus, especially not long after U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy issued an advisory on a potential link between alcohol and cancer. Is there a guest you want us to interview? A topic you want us to cover? We want to hear from you! As America's cities grapple with post-pandemic challenges like rising crime, economic uncertainty, and strained public services, urban leaders are rethinking how to govern, collaborate, and rebuild. Governing's Winter Issue explores these dynamics, highlighting how mayors, philanthropies, and city planners are reshaping the urban landscape through redevelopment projects, innovative partnerships, and efforts to reclaim public spaces —while confronting persistent policy hurdles like AI regulation and social media's societal impact. Governing* Editor Alan Greenblatt and Senior Writer Jared Brey join the podcast to discuss their reporting on the future of American cities. Show Notes Here are the top-five takeaways from this episode: Urban Governance Under Scrutiny Major U.S. cities, predominantly led by Democratic mayors, face governance challenges heightened by pandemic-driven issues like remote work, crime, and homelessness. Alan Greenblatt highlights how these crises have tested mayors' abilities and strained city resources, fueling public dissatisfaction and political consequences. Reclaiming the Built Environment Jared Brey's reporting on New Haven, Conn., illustrates efforts to reverse the damage caused by mid-20th century urban renewal projects. Mayor Justin Elicker's administration focuses on making highways and surrounding areas safer and more accessible, aiming to reshape urban spaces for residents' well-being and community engagement. Foundations as City Builders Greenblatt's piece on Pittsburgh reveals how philanthropic foundations are transforming from passive donors into active investors. By funding large-scale urban redevelopment projects like tech-driven manufacturing hubs, foundations play roles once reserved for municipal governments, reshaping economic futures. Mayors as Conveners and Collaborators While mayors have limited direct authority in complex urban ecosystems, they serve as critical connectors. By rallying business, university, and philanthropic leaders, mayors can drive urban development, leveraging their positions to coordinate diverse stakeholders for city-wide improvements. Emerging Policy Challenges Looking ahead, Governing's “Issues to Watch” package explores pressing topics, including city budget constraints, crime, and new tech governance challenges like regulating AI and social media use. These evolving issues underscore the complexity of urban policymaking in the coming year. The magazine features mentioned in this episode will post on governing.com on January 3, 2025. As part of our community health partnership with Valley Health, we talked today with Dr. Charbel Fawaz, a board-certified general neurosurgeon with Valley Health Virginia Brain & Spine. He has expertise in minimally invasive and complex multi-level spine surgery. We discussed the benefits of robotic-guided surgeries and the use of technology in spine surgery. Dr. Fawaz emphasized the advantages of minimally invasive surgical methods, the importance of training and expertise in utilizing these technologies effectively, and the evolution of surgery over the years. He also highlighted the common spinal problems encountered in our community and the benefits of minimally invasive or robotic surgery for these conditions. Part of our conversation included the advantages of using the Mazor X Stealth robotic guidance system in spine surgery. Dr. Fawaz explained that the system allows for precise planning of surgeries in advance, which saves time and reduces blood loss. He emphasized that the robot does not physically touch the patient, but guides the surgeon's hands to precise locations within the spine. He highlighted the benefits of minimally invasive surgical methods, which involve splitting muscle fibers instead of cutting them. This method results in less post-surgery pain, faster recovery times, and shorter hospital stays. Learn more about these surgeries and Dr. Fawaz by reading the article in the Winter Issue of HealthLink magazine by clicking here. You can also learn more on their website by clicking here.

We welcome guest co-host, Míša Hejná, to The Write Attention podcast to discuss poetics, performance, and personhood. Míša Hejná writes and performs poetry in Aarhus, Denmark. She is also a member of Aarhus Women Write. Her work is primarily meditative and focuses on existential questions by combining the textual, the visual, and the aural. In Episode 5, Míša captivates us with her readings and shares her questions and insights about performing visual poetry (yes, visual poetry), defining voice and style with rules, and the line between art and therapy. Questions (How) can visual poetry be performed for an audience? When is writing(/painting) for therapy art and not "just" therapy? (How) can visual poetry be performed for an audience? How do you navigate the relationship between voice and the written word during performance? (For example, I can think of when I listen to slam poets sometimes and how the voice can sometimes get in the way of the poem, has this happened to you and, if so, how do you navigate that disconnect?) Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
Carefully formed supply chain contracts can protect human rights and save lives. With the EU laying down rules for companies to respect human rights and the environment in global value chains – how can businesses do this in practice? Social Impact Pioneers Sue Maslow, Patrick Miller and Olivia Windham Stewart are part of the Responsible Contracting Project - collaborating across industries, communities to tackle the challenge of embedding human rights protections into international supply chain contracts. If you are wondering how to act on the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) or looking to protect your business from breaches in your supply chains, this podcast is for you. The concept of popping a few lines on human rights due diligence into a supplier contract seems like a simple idea – but the devil is in the detail. Contract law is complex, time consuming and expensive if done badly. Contracts that exert unreasonable commercial pressure or place unrealistic expectations on suppliers don't help anyone. During this conversation Sue, Patrick and Olivia explain how templates of internationally recognised human rights due diligence principles have been developed to help businesses and those in procurement. Check out the links below to see how they have combined their legal and human rights expertise to explain how the principles of human rights due diligence can be embedded directly into business supplier contracts to enhance effectiveness and improve human rights outcomes. Wherever your organisation is on caring for those in your supply chain take a listen. Social Impact Pioneers: · Sue is Co-Founder and Partner of Antheil Maslow & MacMinn, LLP. She is Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section Working Group to Draft Model Contract Clauses to Protect Human Rights in International Supply Contracts; Chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section's Corporate Social Responsibility Law Committee and Senior Legal Advisor to the Responsible Contracting Project. · Patrick is the Founding Attorney of Impact Advocates, focusing on international commercial dispute resolution through arbitration, mediation and litigation. Patrick is a Legal Advisor to the Responsible Contracting Project and advises companies on a range of ESG issues, including establishing responsible supply chain frameworks. · Olivia is Deputy Director of the Responsible Contracting Project; Deputy Director of the Business and Human Rights Law Program and Senior Fellow at Rutgers Law School, New Jersey, USA. She is an independent business and human rights specialist enhancing corporate accountability and improve human rights due diligence across sectors. Guest artist SUSAN SCHUPPLI joins art critic and author ELIZABETH FULLERTON to discuss her art practice via 'The Second Body' 2017 by Daisy Hildyard, published by Fitzcarraldo Books. Listed by the 'White Review' on their Books of the Year 2018, the essay presents the dissolving boundaries between all life on earth, with an updated dualism between the animal bodies in which we eat, breathe, and sleep and the virtual bodies of our global connections and environmental impacts. Susan and Elizabeth discuss dissolving boundaries, plausible deniability, beached whales, deep time, gathering poems, chattering glaciers, foetus ownership, critical proximity, living on ice, images creating barriers, Princess Diana's wedding dress, bodies eating distance, and changing paradigms. Plus, they question where environmental knowledge resides and which modes of representation might inspire action. In our last planned podcast, the Cuisine team runs through the 2022 Holiday/Winter issue loaded with Festive Takes on Tradition as our cover (and John) aptly notes. It's been a joy to share some behind the scenes insights with you all these past three years here on Must Love Food. We're proud of the issue we created, with you all in mind, and that goes for all of our issues. But with low listenership and other pressing matters in the kitchen, we're hanging up our headphones. We may be back for special podcasts - perhaps a run through of each issue - but for now we bit you farewell on this forum. Keep on cooking ... with us!

Deterring a Chinese invasion of Taiwan without recklessly threatening a great-power war is both possible and necessary through a tailored deterrence package that goes beyond either fighting over Taiwan or abandoning it. Dr. Cliff is a research professor of Indo-Pacific Affairs in the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College. His research focuses on China's military strategy and capabilities and their implications for US strategy and policy. He's previously worked for the Center for Naval Analyses, the Atlantic Council, the Project 2049 Institute, the RAND Corporation, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. (Host) The Parameters 2021-22 Winter Issue included an article titled, “Broken Nest: Deterring China from Invading Taiwan.” Authors Dr. Jared M. McKinney and Dr. Peter Harris laid out an unconventional approach to the China-Taiwan conundrum. Shortly after the article was published, Parameters heard from Eric Chan, who disagreed with them on many fronts. We've invited you here today, Roger, to provide some additional insight on the topic. Let's jump right in and talk about “Broken Nest: Deterring China from Invading Taiwan. What is the essence of Jared McKinney and Peter Harris's article “Broken Nest: Deterring China from Invading Taiwan?” (Cliff) So this article is an attempt to find an innovative solution to the Taiwan problem that has bedeviled the United States since 1950. In this particular case, the author's goal is not to find a long-term, permanent solution of the problem, but simply to find a way to deter China from using force against Taiwan in the near term. Specifically, a way that doesn't entail risking a military conflict between two nuclear-armed superpowers. Their proposed solution is a strategy of deterrence by punishment, whereby even a successful conquest of Taiwan would result in unacceptable economic, political, and strategic costs for Beijing. The premise of the article is that China's military is now capable enough that it could conquer Taiwan, even if the United States intervened in Taiwan's defense. The result, they argue, is that the long-standing US deterrence-by-denial strategy for deterring a Chinese use of force against Taiwan—in other words, by threating Beijing with the risk that a use of force against Taiwan would fail—is no longer credible. Unlike most strategies of deterrence by punishment, the strategy that McKinney and Harris proposed does not primarily rely on military attacks on China. Instead, the punishment comes in the form of imposing other costs on China for a successful use of force against Taiwan. This has several elements. One is the United States selling to Taiwan weapon systems that will be most cost-effective and defending against a Chinese invasion. This would make a successful invasion of Taiwan more difficult and, therefore, more costly for China. Related to this, they also recommend that Taiwan's leaders prepare the island to fight a protracted insurgency,

Another amazing conversation with Ken Clinton of Intrepid Powerboats, where if you can dream it, they can build it.Ken delivers another fantastic Elevated podcast as Intrepid continues to deliver sliver linings during an "interesting" year to both current member and new additions to the Intrepid Nation alike. $10,000,000 in sales at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. A new model in the works that a current customer came up with at the Boat Show. The 438 Evolution, which is currently feature in the Winter Issue of Elevated Yachts Magazine (read the feature here), and much more. Intrepid Powerboats don't make boats the way they could be made, they make them the way they should be made. One at a time and to the discerning specifications of our customers. Featured in the upcoming Winter Issue of Elevated Automotive Magazine, the legendary RD Whittington @WiresOnly ..."BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — “It started with a clip of a car pulling out,” RD Whittington said from the head of a table in a private dining room at Mastro's Steakhouse. Mr. Whittington, a car dealer, was wearing a black T-shirt, chain necklace and sparkly Audemars Piguet watch. He was sitting across from Jamie Foxx, whom he calls his best friend and business partner..." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/24/style/instagram-cars.html

I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors
In this episode, I had a wonderful time connecting with the Houston based artist Jasmine Zelaya. A lot of you guys may be familiar with Jasmine's work from the cover of New American Paintings. In this interview, we touch on the topic of why Jasmine decided to start applying to opportunities such as New American Paintings and how by setting that goal for herself, she has been in multiple publications, exhibitions, mural projects and now has had her work featured in the show First Wives Club on BET+. From talking about goals to her studio practice and our mutual love of jackets, Jasmine was a pleasure to have on the show. She is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and received her BFA in Painting in 2006. She was awarded a residency through the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2008. Based in Houston, her work has been exhibited throughout the US. Her work has been included in various publications, including the Winter Issue 11 of ArtMaze Magazine and she was the cover artist for New American Paintings, West Issue #132. In 2018, her painting “Twins” was displayed on the Main Street Marquee, a billboard-sized installation displayed on the exterior of the Main Street Market building in Downtown Houston. Most recently, her work was featured on First Wives Club, now streaming on BET+.
