Part 1:We talk with Ben Sprague, VP First National Bank in Bangor Maine, and community supporter and activist. We discuss the likely effects of the housing crisis, especially exacerbated by climate change and its consequent disasters. The 'popular' living places are becoming less attractive due to climate disasters, and the unavailability of home insurance as a result. Disasters affect not only homes, but infrastructure. Rebuilding is problematic, because 40-60% of laborers fear deportation. Interest rates are higher, there are fewer properties available for many reasons. The American dream of home ownership is fading. We discuss reasons, and what could change this outlook.Part 2:We talk with Leo Gugerty, Professor Emeritus, Clemson University. We discuss the results of various polls dealing with immigration, and how the information in those polls is used and misused. We discuss how the polls are designed, and how the design drives the results desired by the pollsters. Specifically, we focus on the surprising outcomes of polls once the questions were re worded. The nurses of the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine have taken on a new monthly assignment: feeding the community with the help of The Salvation Army. Kristie Clark, a case worker for The Salvation Army stated “These ICU nurses had been part of our Angel Tree Christmas program in the past,” “Six months after the Christmas season ended, the nurses all came back and asked, ‘What more can we do?' What these nurses do goes far beyond volunteering. When they come, they're not just serving a meal; they bring the recipes, provide all the necessary ingredients down to the spices, and prepare all the food themselves. After a local TV station aired a story on the nurses and their work for The Salvation Army, the corps was blessed with new eyes on the Army's mission. As a result, more people have asked how they could also volunteer. In seeing so many health professionals pause their busy schedules to serve, Kristie says that it has made people realize that, if nurses can make time to volunteer, so can anyone. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Wyoming Whiskey Based in Kirby, Wyoming, Wyoming Whiskey has a simple goal: to create America's next great bourbon. The company and product is a collaboration between its partners and 97,818 square miles of Wyoming. The Mead family first came to Wyoming as ranchers in 1890 and the state defines them, and their whiskey. They use the finest corn, wheat, barley, and water from the Big Horn Basin and promote Wyoming's natural and human resources. Every drop of this bourbon is 100% Wyoming. When was WW founded? 2006 Who are it's founders? Brad & Kate Mead, 4th generation Wyoming cattle ranchers, and David DeFazio. All of the founders currently reside in Jackson, but the distillery is at the Mead Ranch in Kirby, WY. How many styles does Wyoming have? 6 in the main lineup Small Batch (flagship, highest quantity produced and sold) Outryder (Straight American Whiskey - WW's take on a rye) Single Barrel (top 1% of their liquid) Double Cask Barrel Strength National Parks Limited Edition Other limited release offerings they've done: Wide Open Spaces collection and some Wyoming-only releases in limited batches such as Stargazer, Thunder Basin and Wilderness. What are some unique factors that set Wyoming Whiskey apart in the industry? #1: WW uses non-GMO grains, including corn, wheat, barley, and rye, all sourced from a local WY farmer named Brent Rageth. Part of WW's culture is to draw upon the natural environment in making their product. Genetically modified grains are, to an extent, unnatural. And for that reason, they will only use natural seed when raising their crops in Byron, Wyoming. An experienced farmer easily works around the challenges presented by non-genetically modified crops. #2: Wyoming Whiskey does not source any alcohol. Every drop in our bottle comes from grains grown in Wyoming, which are cooked, fermented, distilled, barreled and bottled in Kirby, Wyoming. All of our grains come from Rageth Farms in Byron, Wyoming. WW's water comes from a mile-deep limestone aquifer 40 miles to the north of our distillery. This makes their product 100% Wyoming. In an age where a vast number of brands are taking the easier, cheaper and faster route of sourcing bulk whiskey, WW prefers to put in the extra time and effort to do things the right way. #3: Our environment: Wyoming is a special place. And as mentioned previously, our maturation environment is the most unique in the industry. On the hottest of days in the summer, the top of our warehouse can reach 132 degrees and in the depth of winter it will hit 0 degrees. Where else is a whiskey exposed to such extreme temperatures without moving an inch? WW Barrels experience the extreme temperature variations of the high basin between the Absaroka and Bighorn Mountains. Temperatures reach 135° at the height of the warehouse during the summer and fall precipitously to 5° degrees in the depths of Winter. In the summertime, warehouse temperatures can swing 20 – 30 degrees and facilitate greater whiskey and wood interaction. How does the unique terroir of Kirby, WY and its temperature fluctuations impact the development of WW? WW does not use temperature controlled warehouses. As a result, they are at the mercy of the environment. Their maturation environment is arguably the most unique in the whiskey industry because of it's violent temperature swings. Diurnal temperature swings can be over 50 degrees in a day, which results in a more dynamic maturation environment in every barrel. Given the thermal mass in each warehouse, barrel temperatures will not change to this profound of a degree, however, even a 1 degree change in a barrel will cause the alcohol to push into the oak and later withdraw to a greater extent than maturation environments that do not share this cycle. The result is a more meaningful and effective maturation period during the summer months. To the contrary, our barrels go into hibernation during Wyoming's harsh winters. At about 40 degrees, alcohol activity in the barrel ceases and maturation stops. Whatever magic happens in the winter months is a mystery to us, but what we do know is that our maturation process produces an outstanding line of whiskies. Years ago, we used to rotate barrels in an attempt to balance the warehouses' effect on each barrel, however Nancy taught us that it was unnecessary given the complexity of her batching protocol and the precision with which each barrel is selected. In short, we batch around this issue. To learn more, visit http://www.wyomingwhiskey.com and sign up to become a Whiskey Baron to receive the latest news and special offers from Wyoming Whiskey. Pastor Ken Graves of Calvary Chapel, Bangor Maine shares his testimony of redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor Ken spent his childhood living in a trailer while watching his father beat his mother frequently (even within an inch of her life). After witnessing the heinous acts against his dear mother, Ken's father eventually abandoned them both which sent Ken down a dark and depressing road, until one day... A born-again Christian teacher in grade-school took him under his wing and answered a burning question Ken had as a little boy- "Where do we come from?" To Ken's astonishment, he came to the knowledge of the Bible being the inerrant word of God after hearing the teacher's shocking response, "It's illegal for me to tell you." Stay tuned for a beautifully compelling story of God's love and mercy. And so this Halloween, Passport traces the legacy of a single nightmare - one that still echoes 45 years later - all the way back to the place it all began: The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.Stephen and Tabitha King only spent one night in The Stanley - The only guests in an old hotel the night before it closed for the winter. That night, King awoke from a nightmare, smoked a cigarette, and outlined The Shining - one of the biggest horror novels of all time. But that’s not all that happened. King’s The Shining changed the genre, Kubrick’s film adaptation changed horror cinema. But The Stanley has a remarkable story of its own.In part 1 of Passport's 2-part Halloween special, Neil checks into The Stanley to investigate that story with the people who know it best - historian and writer Rebecca Pittman and filmmaker and paranormal expert Karl Pfeiffer. It’s a ghost story that stretches from 1909 to King’s only night in the infamous Room 217. And for those of you wondering about Room 237, Neil and Andrés also journey into the hedge maze of the definitive adaptation - Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. For more, including links to the things we talked about, and the places we visited, plus a full transcript, visit: https://frequencymachine.com/passport Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/passport. This week, we take a rare look a gigantic battery that's helping to balance our region's energy grid. Plus, we get perspective from Maine’s top energy official, who is stepping down. We also take trips to a tiny island where opioid addicts go to seek treatment, and to the city that inspires the country’s most famous horror writer. And we learn what charitable donations — or lack thereof — say about New Englanders. The road into the entry portal of the hydro-electric power plant in Northfield Mountain. At 33-feet in diameter, the tunnel is nearly a mile long and leads 750 feet deep into the heart of the mountain. (Credit: Jesse Costa/WBUR) Finding the Right Energy Mix Today’s batteries come in all shapes and sizes. The largest in New England — and once the world — was built 45 years ago and is still working. But it’s hidden, on top and deep inside a mountain in north-central Massachusetts. WBUR’s Bruce Gellerman reports from Northfield Mountain. Inside the Northfield Mountain pumped storage hydroelectric station. (Credit: Jesse Costa / WBUR) The upper reservoir is the battery that powers the Northfield Mountain pumped hydro-electric plant. It holds more than five billion gallons of water. (Jesse Costa/WBUR) In Maine, Republican Governor Paul LePage's energy director is stepping down from his job at the capitol. “Augusta is really broken,” Patrick Woodcock, who held his position since 2013, told the Portland Press Herald. “Energy policy is really complicated and there's an over-reliance on special interests,” he said. Patrick Woodcock, director of the Governor’s Energy Office in Maine, is stepping down this week. (Credit: Mal Leary/ Maine Public Radio) Woodcock says he wants to keep working in energy, in Maine, outside of state government. As our region aggressively moves toward more renewable sources of power, he says we need to stay focused on bringing down costs for consumers and businesses. We recorded our conversation with Woodcock on Tuesday. Since, we’ve learned that President-elect Donald Trump has picked Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the EPA. Pruitt has been a close ally of fossil-fuel companies, questions the human impact on climate change, and has been sharply critical of EPA regulations. We asked Woodcock – as someone who served in the administration of Paul LePage, a governor who has been likened both politically, and in temperament to Donald Trump – what he thinks the impact of Trump's national energy policy might be on Maine and New England. You won't hear Woodcock's response to this appointment – because, at the time, we had fewer specifics. But he did have some interesting thoughts on the issue. Treatment Island Brett, a program participant at Penikese, learns how to chop wood. (Credit: Karen Brown/NEPR) About a dozen miles off the coast of cape cod sits a rustic island named Penikese, near the end of the Elizabeth Island Chain. A hundred years ago, Penikese was home to a leper colony. Later it housed a school for troubled boys, and a bird sanctuary. This past fall, Penikese opened to its newest incarnation: a treatment program for young men suffering from addiction. The program’s participants live simply: using kerosene lamps and cooking on a wood-burning stove, and minimal access to the internet. New England Public Radio’s Karen Brown takes us there. New Englanders Give Less to Charity, Stephen King Excepted Bangor, Maine is one of the most famous towns in the world, though some may not realize it. Fans of renowned horror author Stephen King know Bangor well, but by another name: Derry. The fictional town is a thinly disguised version of Bangor, where the author has lived for decades. Derry appears in many of King's stories and provides the major setting for the novel “It.” Maine Public Radio's Jennifer Mitchell took a tour of the real Derry with a tour company exclusively devoted to showcasing Stephen King's Bangor. A family poses in front of Stephen and Tabitha King’s home in Bangor Maine during a King-themed tour. (Credit: Jennifer Mitchell/Maine Public Radio) Alongside his wife Tabitha, Stephen King has given millions to public projects in Bangor, according to the city’s Community and Economic Development Department. The Kings have quietly funded upgrades to libraries, fire departments, baseball diamonds and more around Maine. But New Englanders in general look less than generous compared with people in other parts of the country. We give an average of less than three percent of our household incomes to charity, compared to the national average of 4.7 percent. Of course within New England, some states give more than others. With the holiday season upon us, Connecticut-based columnist Susan Campbell took a hard look at household charitable giving in a recent article for the New England News Collaborative. We sat down with Susan and Jim Klocke, CEO of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. Create column charts About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR.
