The music of Caleb Caudle was originally recommended to me some years ago by music loving friends that know whereof they speak. Following their suggestions usually yields solid gold. Caleb was recently in Kansas City in 2022 on tour in support of Hayes Carll and then solo to promote his latest critically acclaimed album, Forsythia. He was also finally able to personally promote his album, Better Hurry Up, that was way laid by the Covid-19 pandemic. Forsythia is a portrait of Caleb at his most solitary and reflective. Thematically, it meets anticipation for the unknown future with nostalgia for the past, and reconciles both with meditation in the present. The album, recorded at Cash Cabin and produced by John Carter Cash, features acclaimed session players Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Dennis Crouch and Fred Eltringham, and the vocal talents of Carlene Carter, Elizabeth Cook and Sarah Peasall McGuffey. On his last release, Better Hurry Up, Caudle found himself feeling like time was moving too fast. By early 2020, with a new home base in Nashville, a few years of sobriety under his belt and the release of his best album yet imminent, Caudle was prepared for the next phase of his career. But a few days before Better Hurry Up came out, a devastating tornado ripped through Nashville; a week later, just before he was set to depart for a lengthy tour, the world went into lockdown. The couple moved back to the mountains of North Carolina for the duration of the pandemic, where he spent most of his time in the woods– hiking, observing, thinking and writing. Hoy el comienzo del tiempo de TOMA UNO nos reencuentra con la herencia de los pioneros de la Cosmic American Music con la brisa californiana que nos regala una banda debutante como The Sunset Canyoneers con su álbum High In The Sky, al que da nombre esta canción de espíritu libre. El salón de la casa del bajista del grupo, William Duke, situado en Oakdale, la llamada capital del mundo de los cowboys, fue el lugar propicio para desplegar un sentimiento de libertad que hemos visto crecer en nosotros en estas semanas. Caleb Caudle es un fiel seguidor de las apagadas fórmulas sonoras de músicos como J.J.Cale, uno de sus referentes junto a Leon Russell o Lowell George de Little Feat. Le pega mucho a un artista que proviene de Carolina del Norte y conoce bien el espíritu de los Apalaches. Para conformar su álbum Better Hurry Up, el octavo de su andadura, se trasladó a la mítica Cash Cabin de Old Hickory Lake en Hendersonville, durante tres días, tras mudarse a Nashville el pasado año. "Hay un millón de maneras de conocerte a ti mismo, yo todos deben encontrar la llave". Así canta en “This Thing Called Life” el cantautor australiano Wesley Dean, anticipando un nuevo álbum y explorando los secretos que guardamos y las angustias que soportamos durante nuestras vidas. Se trata de una buena forma de identificarse con situaciones personales y sucesos a nivel global. Son los desafíos a los que nos enfrentamos cada día. El músico de Sidney suele mezcla de folk, country y rock para dar una visión propia del mundo referida a personas y lugares, como un alivio y una cierta válvula de escape. Orville Peck, vaquero enmascarado, tiene un nuevo EP, Show Pony, que es su primer lanzamiento desde que firmó con Columbia Records y la continuación de su álbum de debut del pasado año. Entre las seis canciones del proyecto, que se publica la próxima semana, se incluye un dúo con la canadiense Shania Twain y una versión a “Fancy”, la emblemática canción de Bobbie Gentry. Sin embargo, es en "No Glory in the West" donde este músico canadiense ha querido poner el foco, con un intento de poner en cuestión los ideales románticos de la vida solitaria de los cowboys. Aunque esta vez ha tomado el tono y las formas de un legendario artista también canadiense como Ian Tyson, seguimos sin saber exactamente si Orville Peck quiere ser Roy Orbison, Chris Isaak… o ambos a la vez. Cuando se unen nueve de ellas en un álbum como Born On The Ground el resultado es un disco sólido tal y como nos ha regalado Emily Duff, con una mirada retrospectiva suavizada por una voz creíble a medio camino entre el country y el soul. Su tema central, “Born On The Ground”, tiene un toque amigable con reminiscencias de Bonnie Raitt, aunque Rosanne Cash es su debilidad. Emily Duff proviene de la escena neoyorquina. Sustituyó como vocalista de Gods And Monsters a Jeff Buckley y escuchar a Mavis Staples la ha inclinado a paisajes sonoros con tintes pantanosos, además de llevarla en su momento a Muscle Shoals. Esta vez se ha quedado en la Gran Manzana, pero su capacidad para filtrar un crisol de experiencias ha conformado un registro luminoso. Antes de ayer se cumplieron 45 años desde que Emmylou Harris publicara en single "If I Could Only Win Your Love", un tema de los Louvin Brothers que serviría de anticipo a su primer álbum en Reprise y el comienzo de una nueva etapa en su carrera. Reprise Records había establecido contactos con ella y encargó al canadiense Brian Ahern ‑el que sería su segundo marido‑ la producción de un disco titulado Pieces Of The Sky que vería la luz en aquel 1975. Este es un nuevo momento decisivo para su carrera. En él figuran muchas de sus canciones favoritas como "Coat Of Many Colors" de Dolly Parton, "The Bottle Let Me Down" de Merle Haggard, además de "If I Could Only Wind Your Love", una canción que el desaparecido Gram Parsons adoraba. Aquel Pieces Of The Sky era un trabajo elegante, que sirvió de continuación al trabajo que Emmylou y su mentor habían realizado juntos en G.P. y, sobre todo, en Grievous Angel. Ni podemos, ni queremos, despegarnos del álbum de debut de Tessy Lou Williams que con su nombre por título nos tiene cautivados desde su primera escucha con esa vuelta a las raíces y al espíritu que nunca debió perder la country music. Afincada en Nashville, Tessy Lou parece añorar los paisajes de su natal Montana y los sonidos aprendidos desde el ambiente familiar, habiéndose rodeado de músicos muy experimentados de Music City. “One More Night” expresa la batalla entre la cabeza y el corazón, en la que casi siempre sales perdiendo, pero necesitas casi con angustia una noche más. Esta vez es la soledad en la barra de un bar a última hora contado cómo podría hacerlo las mejores Lee Ann Womack o Alison Krauss. En estos tiempos complicados es bueno que regresen artistas como The Mammals con mensajes de aliento y esperanza. El colectivo que lideran Mike Merenda y Ruth Ungar, tienen su base en el área de Hudson Valley en Nueva York y desde su creación en 2001 estuvieron muy relacionados con la escena del folk de la zona, teniendo como mentores a piezas tan fundamentales del género como el desaparecido Pete Seeger o Arlo Guthrie. In 2008, The Mammals se tomaron un largo descanso para que la pareja realizara otras aventuras como Mike + Ruthy, pero en 2017 volvieron a reunirse como en el primitivo proyecto. Ahora la formación se ha elevado a nueve miembros para dar origen a Nonet, una especie de tapiz sonoro que permite muy diferentes perspectivas. La banda encarna esa amplia variedad de propuesta, todas ellas bajo el paraguas de la Americana, con unas armonías que a veces, como en “What It All Is”, con una oposición directa al militarismo y la ruina ecológica, trae ecos del binomio Buckingham-Nicks de los mejores Fleetwood Mac. Un salto a California nos encuentra con el folk-rock del trío Distant Cousins, cohesionados precisamente por lo heterogéneo de sus aportaciones y por la familiaridad con la que siempre se han relacionado. A comienzos de este 2020 se reunieron en los Boulevard Studios para grabar Here & Now, un álbum en vivo con una colección de selecciones acústicas de sus anteriores grabaciones. Ahí está “Angelina”, una canción que Distant Cousins habían creado hace dos años y que ahora suena a medio camino entre los Lumineers y los Avett Brothers. Es una visión muy personal de los fantasmas que surgen en soledad, cuando estás solo en una habitación de hotel en Nueva York. La etapa de aislamiento está sirviendo también para que algunos de los músicos más cercanos trabajen sobre nuevos proyectos. Ese es el caso de Los Widow Makers que están culminando la edición de un nuevo álbum grabado en directo hace un año en el Fernán Gómez de Madrid. Fue la realización de un proyecto que llevó al escenario de la sala Guirau a 20 músicos muy diversos pero fundidos en un objetivo común que había nacido tiempo antes en la cabeza y el corazón de Juan Carlos Esteban, el alma mater de la banda madrileña. El disco incluye 11 canciones, con algunas que formaron parte de sus cinco discos anteriores, nuevos temas y algunas versiones, filtradas por el rhythm and blues, el góspel y el swing sin perder su razón de ser original. Ahí está “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, que Los Widow Makers han hecho suya desde hace años y que John Denver compuso junto al matrimonio formado por Taffy Nivert y Bill Danoff en una velada nocturna y que incluyó hace 49 años en su álbum Poems, Prayers And Promises para hablar de West Virginia. Con su más reciente álbum, Early Morning Rain, Steve Forbert ha querido que la gente renueve su aprecio por la artesanía musical que suponen las 11 canciones seleccionadas por el artista de Mississippi, encuadradas en el folk y el rock y con una exquisita diversidad. Desde un trovador como Gordon Lightfoot, de quien ha tomado el nombre genérico del álbum, hasta Elton John, pasando por Danny O’Keefe, los Kinks o la sorpresa de escuchar “Box oF Rain” que compusieron Phil Lesh y Robert Hunter para el colosal American Beauty de Grateful Dead hace medio siglo, Steve Forbert se recrea en canciones que han sido emblema de varias generaciones. En el caso de “Box Of Rain”, los músicos elegidos por Forbert han propuesto un ritmo más acelerado que el original, recordando en ocasiones las viejas grabaciones de bandas como Poco, con el exquisito protagonismo de la guitarra y el Steel guitar. Por suerte, esta situación excepcional no ha impedido que podamos compartir nuevas propuestas sonoras de algunos de nuestros artistas favoritos de la escena de la Americana. De esta forma, Will Hoge nos regala un nuevo álbum, Tiny Little Movies, para finales del próximo mes de junio. Este trabajo tiene sonidos que recuerdan los himnos de Tom Petty, la crudeza de los Stones y la brillantez del timbre vocal de Buck Owens. Además, las letras de este nativo de Nashville siguen teniendo un poderío narrativo incalculable. "The Curse" es su adelanto. Grabado en los East Iris Studios de Music City junto a su banda de acompañamiento habitual, resalta la química que existe entre todos ellos. Lamentations ha pasado a ser la más reciente propuesta de American Aquarium. La banda se reunió en Los Angeles, a la sombra de Laurel Canyon, y surgió un trabajo mucho más esperanzador y brillante de lo que se presuponía. Así ocurre, por ejemplo, en “Stars With You” con versos como "Las canciones tristes son lo único que me hace feliz". Un tema poderoso con ecos evidentes de Tom Petty. En las últimas semanas hemos ido conociendo el nuevo disco de Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Reunion, donde un tema de la categoría de "Dreamsicle" destaca sobre una altísima media. Con la guitarra acústica y el piano como rasgos fundamentales de su envoltorio sonoro, esta vez, Jason Isbell canta desde la perspectiva de un chaval de 14 años que atraviesa tiempos difíciles. Drive-By Truckers no han dejado de trabajar a pesar del aislamiento imprescindible debido a la pandemia, y de manera muy especial Patterson Hood, que compuso una canción como “Quarantine Together” en los primeros días de confinamiento y compartió la maqueta con el resto de la banda. Ellos grabaron su parte y David Barbe se encargó de hacer la mezcla. Es un tema de amor que propone ponerse en cuarentena juntos y, por el contrario, ser miserables solos. Todo con toques acústicos y un ambiente placentero y relajado. Hablan de su último álbum, el octavo de su carrera, como de una obra maestra del gótico sureño. Se trata de Caleb Caudle y su Better Hurry Up, un trabajo que se generó en la mítica Cash Cabin tres días después de mudarse a Nashville el pasado año desde su natal Carolina del Norte. Un artista que como él creció en las estribaciones de los Apalaches y que siempre ha tenido a Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Little Feat o The Band como referentes, tenía que acogerse a músicos que coincidieran con sus raíces. De esta forma, en este octavo álbum de Caudle han coincidido el productor John Jackson y Elizabeth Cook, John Paul White, Courtney Marie Andrews o Gary Louris. Aquellas sesiones han resultado perfectas para que las canciones se oscurezcan, se empapen a veces de whisky y resistan un viaje por carreteras secundarias a través del corazón de su país en estos tiempos. “Front Porch” es contundente a pesar de lo sutil de su bella melodía. La capacidad de Daniel Romano para crear está por encima de toda duda y la de conformar todo ello en nuevas grabaciones supera lo esperado. Su más reciente entrega supone el cuarto álbum del artista canadiense en lo que llevamos de año 2020, todos ellos con una calidad suprema. Se trata de Content to Point the Way, grabado con The Outfit, su banda de acompañamiento, con un regreso de tintes sentimentales y decididos al country, destacando sobre una selección magnífica “Diamonds And Dogs”, con Gram Parsons y Emmylou Harris en el horizonte gracias a la intervención vocal de Julianna Riolino con una atmósfera llena de melancolía. Dentro de poco menos de un mes estará publicado Mountain Standard Time, el nuevo proyecto de Chris Roberts, uno de los más refutados miembros de la comunidad musical de Nashville, desde sus facetas de compositor, vocalista y productor. Ha sido responsable de musicales, autor de canciones de éxito, colaborador con a artistas de prestigio e incluso se ha aventurado en la creación de bandas sonoras cinematográficas. Pero el bluegrass es una de sus debilidades y para este nuevo álbum vez ha querido llevar a ese terreno canciones tan deliciosas como “Right On Time”, cuya composición ha compartido con Mike Reid. Una guitarra acústica, réplica de la legendaria Martin de Clarence White que heredó el enorme Tony Rice, mandolina y mandocello, dobro, banjo, guitarra barítono de 8 cuerdas y contrabajo... todo ello puesto en manos de Ramón Arroyo, que ha incorporado su voz, pocas veces escuchada, para rendir homenaje a John Prine con esta versión de “Paradise”, que el artista recientemente desaparecido compuso para su padre y formó parte de su álbum de debut en 1971. Ramón Arroyo, al que casi todo el mundo conoce como miembro de Los Secretos, pero que tiene una larga andadura en proyectos muy diversos, desde aquellos legendarios Flying Gallardos, pasando por multitud de colaboraciones y apariciones en directo, hasta llegar a Roadrunners junto a su gran amigo Jeff Espinoza. Ojalá que Ramón se anime definitivamente a explorar esos caminos como solista aunque, seguro, estará rodeado de todos esos amigos a los que ha acompañado tantas veces. Esta vez nuestro viaje sonoro nos lleva hasta Winchester, en Virginia, para encontrarnos con Gina Furtado, que conformó su propia aventura tras dejar a Chris Jones & The Night Drivers. Gina, que era conocida como Gina Clowes, decidió recuperar su apellido de soltera y fundó The Gina Furtado Project. Sus formas combinan el bluegrass y el swing, con su experiencia como banjista y la incorporación de su hermana, Malia Furtado al violín, Drew Matulich en la guitarra y Max Johnson al contrabajo. “The Things I Saw” tiene que ver con su infancia en las orillas del río Shenandoah. Desde la publicación hace tres años de su álbum Trophy, no sabíamos nada nuevo de Sunny Sweeney, excepto su dúo con Randy Rogers en "Between You and Me" para el álbum Dreamer: A Tribute to Kent Finlay, editado a primeros de 2016. En su nuevo álbum Neon Cross, sin duda el mejor de su carrera, Jaime Wyatt ha logrado compartir abiertamente su verdad, con la importancia que tiene todo ello en una mujer con traumáticas experiencias personales desde muy joven. Y eso que tiene tan solo 34 años. La producción de Shooter Jennings ha dotado a este disco de la exuberancia que parecería resistirse a unos textos tan personales y llenos de altibajos como la historia de la propia Jaime Wyatt. Neon Cross es el mejor ejemplo del Outlaw country por parte de una mujer que compuso “By Your Side” tras perder a dos personas muy importantes en su vida, como su padre y su querido amigo Anthony Agosti. Episode 124: Caleb Caudle grew up in rural North Carolina outside of Winston Salem, captivated by music far beyond what his school peers cared about - English punk, folk music and Bob Dylan among them. Since entering the fray as a singer songwriter in the mid 2000s, he's released seven studio albums, with a brand new one on the way later this week. Better Hurry Up was cut in 2019 just days after the artist and his wife moved to Nashville. A crack band set up at the Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, surrounded by the spirit of Johnny and June. Great things resulted. Also in the hour, bass playing sideman turned impressive singer/songwriter Adam Chaffins.
