What if your blank notebook became the engine of your business growth? Collin shares the two phrases he writes in every notebook—“Nothing doesn't go in here” and “The first page is profound”—to defeat perfectionism and capture ideas without judgment. He explains why our brains are processors, not hard drives, and how offloading thoughts reduces mental fatigue. Drawing on James Dyson's 5,000+ prototypes, he shows how creativity thrives through small, physical iterations. Finally, he gives a simple cadence: capture daily, review weekly, and treat the page as a workspace—not a performance. Main topics: Idea capture vs. perfectionism Brain as processor, not storage Notebook phrases and mindset Iteration modeled by Dyson Weekly review for execution Main takeaway: “You have to view the blank page as a workspace, not a performance.” That mindset shift frees you from making every idea perfect before it exists. Capture without judgment today, then analyze and refine later. When you separate capture from critique, your creativity keeps flowing and momentum builds. Start with one page, one idea, every day—and watch small iterations stack into real change. Links: Check out our Starter Packs See all of our discounts! Capture Ideas, Unleash Potential Over the years, I have produced over 10,000 podcasts, and every one begins with the written word. Even though that makes my mouth and fingers my most exercised body parts, it has also given me many opportunities to learn to keep my words flowing. If you're like most people, you have found yourself sitting in front of a blank screen, praying for inspiration. It could be writer's block, procrastination, or you stayed up late watching Netflix. In any case, there's a simple solution to always having a starting point. Any project I need to wrap my head around begins by capturing the ideas that flow into my mind throughout the day. Even turning the radio off on a 20-minute drive can provide a treasure-trove of useable nuggets. Next, I tucked those ideas away in a safe place without organizing, editing, or re-writing. I grab the thoughts, jot a note or record a memo, put them away, and let them simmer. When I'm ready to get to work, I take 15 minutes the day before to review my list of creative geniuses, toss out what is not relevant, create a simple outline, and walk away knowing I am ready to begin. The next day, I can't wait to sit in front of a blank screen and let the magic flow from my fingertips with complete ease. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“I can't be consistent” is a common misconception in podcasting! I was worried about this too, and I've publishing at least 1 show weekly for over 6 years. During certain times, it's 3 weekly shows! So how can you be more consistent? I recommend that you:Capture Ideas constantly. I always have a way to capture an idea when it hits me, from a pen and paper, to a voice activated note that logs whatever I say. Idea capture is the lynchpin of consistency.Repurpose content from your blog, newsletter, and social media. This works especially well going from a written to audio medium. Read a blog post, or even take questions you can from your readers via email or on social media.Batch episodes. Record/Process/Schedule in large chunks. That way you're in the right mindset, you're not switching contexts, and you're not scrambling at the last minute. Usually, Thursday is podcast day for me.Podcasting consistently is tough…if you don't have the right process in place. But these 3 tips can help immensely. I'd love to know: how do you capture ideas? Is this something you'd like more insight into? ★ Support this podcast ★
Where do your ideas go to grow? Do you have a place where they can mature and develop while you are working on other things? What about your leads on potential clients? Are you cultivating those so your pipeline stays full? In this last episode of the Simplify With Systems series, we are going to look at two simple systems that have made a huge impact on my business ... the idea capture system, and the client lead followup system. There are some basic systems that every ministry or business needs to have .... Document filing, appointment scheduling, email management, and the like. But today, I want to cover a couple of systems that are not talked about as much, but have been a key part of managing and growing my business. Let's start with the Idea Capture System first, then touch on the client lead follow up system. Before we talk about how to develop a capture system, let's talk a bit more about why we need one.2 Corinthians 10:5 says: We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. Many of my ideas come from the lofty opinions of others ... what I could do, or should do, or think I ought to do because the ever-present they are doing it.Capturing the idea parks it in a place to rest while I pray and seek God.At first, you may feel like your capture system is a place where ideas go to die. But, you'll find it is really a place where ideas go to grow. Some things to consider when setting up your capture system.A space to capture - Set up a place where you can capture every idea as it comes to you.Your capture system is more than a list.A home for shiny objects.Create the habit - The more you use the system, the more it will naturally become the first place you go when inspiration strikes.Process, filter and prioritize - About once every three months or so, run through your captured ideas.Keeping my head clear of all this extra information and activity gives me more capacity to focus on the things God has assigned me to do right now. Preserving the ideas in a place they can live and grow (or not) releases the guilty feelings that I'm not doing enough.Let's touch briefly on the client lead follow up system. When I make a connection with a potential new client, I add them to a list on my Clients Trello board ... close to the top if I want to follow up soon, or in the middle when I want to follow up in a few weeks. Each Sunday evening, when I do my planning for the next week, I send a quick email to the top 2 or 3 people on the list, referencing things we mentioned the last time we talked. Then I move them to the bottom of the list, and do 2 or 3 more the next week.I hope this series has helped you develop some simple systems that free you up to do the work you love most. In our next episode, we'll take a little break and do something a little silly, just for fun. I hope you'll join me!ACTION STEPWhich one of these two systems would make the biggest difference for you? Spend a little time this week setting it up so you can capture your big ideas AND your potential customers.RESOURCESMore Than Capable Momprenuer Podcast with Shannon Baker: The Business Systems Every Mompreneur NeedsBook Recommendation: ++++++++++Are you tired from trying to share your God-inspired message while working your full time job? Many people are creating content online, however not very many of them are doing it well, or even consistently. Consistency in content creation helps build trust with your audience and improve your content. The reason you might be having trouble staying consistent with your content creation is that you haven't built the structure in your business to support you being a content creator. This week's episode is part 2 in the 3-part series about content where I'm going to dive in and talk about building rituals in your business in order for you to create content consistently. I'm going to help you think through what can work best for you because everyone's rhythms are different. So, here's how you can build your own content rhythms into your business that you can actually stick to (and it works for both short-form and long-form content):Commit to Your Content Publishing ScheduleCreate a Promotional CalendarCreate a Content Creation RitualBlock the Time on Your CalendarCreate a System to Capture Ideas and InspirationStay Consistent Even When You Aren't BrilliantLinksBetter Than Before, Gretchen RubinGet the free 90-day planning template so you can get focused on the most important things in order to grow your business. Do you ever feel that the algorithms - on your social media platforms of choice - are always 10 steps ahead? It is very important to capture those ideas in any form you can when you have them, even when they might be rough quick thoughts. They do not have to be perfect, but capturing them is a must.
