Charlene Kaye is a singer- song writer, musician, comedian and actor who releases music under the moniker KAYE. She has carved out a unique path in the entertainment industry, beginning with her time performing with TEAM STARKID, the viral internet sensation founded by her University of Michigan classmate, Emmy award-winning actor Darren Criss. Since then, she has released multiple albums and opened for Arctic Monkeys, alt-J, St. Vincent, and Metallica. Rolling Stone Magazine gave Kaye's 2019 single “Closer Than This” 5/5 stars and hailed her as “a fully realized pop goddess.” Charlene's short-form comedy on Instagram Reels and TikTok is a phenomenon in and of itself. This spring, she skyrocketed to viral fame with “Every Taylor Swift Song,” a genius musical breakdown with 16 million views on Instagram, which incited BBC 1 to interview her on UK national radio. She has since followed it up with “Every Dua Lipa Song,” “Every Charli XCX song,” and “Every Chappell Roan Song,” which Chappell herself commented, “EXACTLYYYY YOU GET IT” with copious heart emojis. Charlene's recent expansion into acting and comedy has attracted a larger following. She made a cameo as herself at Kendall Roy's birthday party on HBO's hit series "Succession" and played synthesizers for Coldplay on Saturday Night Live while dressed as an alien. Her upcoming role as punk rocker Jade Power in the movie RON opposite comedy legend Margaret Cho further solidifies her ascent in the acting world. Also exciting news, Charlene will be in Melbourne for the comedy festival with her show ‘Tiger Daughter, Or: How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame', so if you're around check them out (links below)! We chat about transitioning to comedy, performing and love of guitar, her upcoming Melbourne shows, trolls, viral videos, courage, the magical formula to Taylor Swifts songs, her new lease on life, listening to your gut, the reason guitar sales increase, solo vs being in a band + plenty more! It's a podcast-first first as Elis and John enter the unknown: Cheadle Hulme's most handsome producer is absent, leaving the unproduceables unproduced. It's Elis and John unleashed. But digital Dave is on hand to provide some podcasting tips, should the boys completely forget how to broadcast.Fish fingers are another main course, as a listener answers the age old question of how many of the breaded delights can be eaten in one sitting. Dads are of course up to their mad tricks, and a comedian friend drops by to answer a listener's dilemma. Also you can watch ‘So Many Reasons', the Taylor Swift John Robins breakup song by Charlene Kaye, in full right here: www.bbc.co.uk/elisandjohn or on the BBC Sounds YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@BBCSoundsIf you want to get in touch with the show then email elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp on 07974 293 022
A huge moment for both Swifties and Red Breasts alike, for today's the day we hear the hit new single about “What if Taylor Swift broke up with a Bristolian comic who specialises in emotional heft.”The crowds are in and the red carpet is out, as despite Elis and John seemingly confusing a first play with a film premiere, this is an occasion. Elsewhere a listener sends in another wonderful Made Up Games jingle BUT it must pass the discerning ear of Johnny JR.If you want to check out our songwriter, and her shows / work, it's the very funny and talented Charlene Kaye. Just give her a Google. To get in touch with the show then elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp 07974 293 022 are the places to go.

It's the third time it's happened but it has to be said: it is wild that we're at the point where we have return guests to the pod. Honestly, what a privilege to welcome back Charlene Kaye (aka KAYE), a friend I deeply admire and an artist I'm a proper fan of. We first met when she was part of the Brooklyn-based outfit, San Fermin, and since leaving the band she's evolved into one of NYC's most daring artists. Part of achieving that has come from her ability, no, actually, more her desire for metamorphosis. A true testament to Charlene's character is how when many of us are running away from change, she's able to run toward it with open arms. Her latest release, Neon God, is a body of work that feels wholly reflective of its creator. Across the 5 tracks, Charlene projects a stylish ambition and a level of honesty that feels both vulnerable and defiant in equal measure. To get to the bottom of this, we decided to have this episode be a track-by-track, meaning we go into the stories of each song. The end result is a talk that's become the most personal episode of season 5, in a way that leaves me with so much gratitude and privilege. In addition to a stellar music career, Charlene also created/hosts one of my favourite podcasts; The Golden Hour. It's a truly beautiful podcast where Charlene interviews creatives of Asian and Pacific Island backgrounds about the intersection between artistry and identity. Season 2 just started, so be sure to catch the podcast over on Apple, Spotify, and where ever you listen to podcasts (also support the podcast through Anchor). Be sure to join Charlene and company at the second-ever Golden Hour Fest, which will be happening at Farm To People in Brooklyn. Tickets can be found here.

On this episode, we're talking about the push for more representation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in entertainment. First, we hear from musician Charlene Kaye, also known as KAYE, about how the lack of Asian American artists she had to look up to growing up forced her to shy away from her identity. Charlene shares how she is now furthering the conversation through music, and her podcast, Golden Hour. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with Bing Chen, the founder of non-profit Gold House, to learn how he has spent the last four years putting community and capital behind AAPI representation, helping drive the success of films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Parasite and Minari. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. Amidst the ongoing crush of anti-Asian violence in America, Producer James turns to a peresonal source of restoration: ska music (yes, that ska music). When he was a teenager, the do-it-yourself ska scene — and an indie record label called Asian Man — taught him to take racism seriously, embrace the road less traveled, and never wait for anyone else's approval to be himself. But as James starts connecting with all of the Asian American ska fans he's met over the past few years, he also starts to question how much his own memories are wrapped in a black-and-white-checkered blanket of nostalgia. Eventually, these connections all lead to Mike Park, Korean American founder and still-only-employee of Asian Man Records — and Jer Hunter, a younger Black and queer ska musician who's carrying the torch for ska music as a home for anti-racist activism. And the more these conversations peel away the layers of nostalgia surrounding ska, the more James believes that this oft-misunderstood subculture has something real to offer in a world that can feel like it's crumbling beneath our feet. KAYE is the musical moniker of Charlene Kaye, former frontwoman of indie darlings San Fermin. Each release propelled her singular creative vision while magnifying her electric frontwoman energy. We discuss her journey as she navigates growing up in an Asian household with a love of music, to enrolling in University of Michigan and Parsons to further her learning to be the best artist she can be. Her newest single was indeed co-produced by her and we chat about how she created a stop-motion music video for the song which she spent over two weeks to make and consists of 2500 individual still photos taken on a set made in her living room. The music video is a DIY jawdropper and a veritable time capsule of 2020, painting a picture of riot police opening fire at Black Lives Matter protests, a Trump made from an orange spewing out dozens of nails, and KAYE zooming over a death spiral, shredding atop a UFO. During the first month of the pandemic, she said that there was so much death and despair in the news that she felt her inner emotional state was constantly vacillating between laughing and crying. What a fucking time to be alive, indeed.
