“Sometimes it's easier to find and access your truth through ‘pretend' characters. So I had this embarrassment of riches of this true story but in my heart, I was like, ‘I totally get to tell my truth!'… So my advice is find a way to do it, and if you have to do a mind trick by saying, ‘I'm writing this pretend character' that's fine, but put all the stuff that's real to you into that pretend character, because I find there is an immense amount of freedom in being able to write through these characters because they aren't exactly my family, they are pieces of them. Writing your truth is possibly the scariest thing, but your truth only belongs to you, you are the person who experienced it in the exact way you experienced it. Know that you are giving a great gift to the world by doing it,” says Liz Maccie, screenwriter for the new film Nonnas, about how to make someone else's story personal to you. On today's episode we chat with Nonnas screenwriter Liz Maccie and director Stephen Chbosky about turning this true story into a heartfelt movie about a man who risks everything to honor his late mother by opening an Italian restaurant with actual grandmothers as the chefs. Maccie and Chbosky, a real-life married couple, talk about their own families and how they were able to put pieces of themselves on the screen. They discuss the hilarious Nonnas' food fight scene and how to balance grief with humor in the writing. “I feel that the other side of grief is hope,” says Maccie, adding, “Because I have lost so much of my family, sometimes you're drowning in the grief. Then you have that moment when you suddenly feel that spark of hope again… we are all going to lose someone, even losing a pet. When we love something, someone and it goes away it's a devastating feeling and I think that connects us.” Chbosky shared this advice for writers: “The one bit of solace or encouragement that any writer of any age can find is that sometimes, the more specific you write about your experience the more universal the script and the movie is… I really am a humanist at heart. I believe in using this art form to find ways to unify people, inspire them and certainly give them hope, put on their shoes and go at it the next day, I just think that when you write about your own personal experience it can lead to great things. And it doesn't mean that it has to be a dramedy or comedy, it could be horror, it could be sci-fi, it could be any genre that you feel as long as it is specific to you.”. Directed by Stephen Chbosky, DEAR EVAN HANSEN tells the story of a young man who write letters to himself in order to provide a way of dealing with his mental health issues. However, when one of his letters is mistaken for the last words of another teen who takes his own life, Evan finds himself trapped in a lie that deceives the youth's family and his friends. In this 1on1, we speak to Chbosky about the power of mental health issues, why he believed Ben Platt was the only person for the role, and why he believes loneliness is on the rise.

Wade. Bienvenido a La Wikly. This is a public episode. Book Vs Movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower The Margos Discuss Stephen Chbosky’s Book & Film The Margos continue their back-to-school September episodes with a redo of one of the most asked-for books by our listeners--The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Pittsburgh native Chbosky based the story in his hometown in the early 1990s as we follow the story of freshman Charlie who is dealing with a recent psychiatric hospital stay after his best friend’s death by suicide. He is facing highschool with incredible angst and writes in his journal a mythical friend to relay his feelings. Charlie also lost his favorite aunt in a car accident (she was on her way to buy him a present) so he has quite a few demons to face while navigating school cliques. The novel deals with mental illness, rape, sexuality, drugs, and alcohol which made it on to “banned” lists at schools across the country. The journey for Charlie includes making new friends, falling in love, making huge mistakes, and dealing with tremendous pain. It’s a beautiful piece of work and the movie is almost up to the task of meeting our expectations. The film was a big hit and stars Logan Lerman as Charlie and a young Ezra Miller as his charismatic best friend Patrick Stewart. (Really. That’s the name they give him!) There are a few changes between the book & the film and one BIG logic hole that we are still grappling with so check out this episode to hear our thoughts! In this ep the Margos discuss: The bio of writer/director Chbosky Movies that take place in the 90s (How accurate are they?) Margo D’s Ezra Miller story! Happy Halloween! On today's episode of the B&N Podcast we're joined by the novelist and filmmaker Stephen Chbosky, for a conversation about his spine-tingling new novel Imaginary Friend. Many readers and moviegoers alike know Chbosky as the author of the acclaimed coming-of-age story The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a novel whose early devoted audience grew substantially following Chbosky's deft and memorable 2012 film adaptation of his own work starring Emma Watson and Ezra Miller. His long-awaited second work of fiction is now finally here: Imaginary Friend is the story of a seven year old boy named Christopher and his mother Kate, their arrival in a small town with a strange past, and what happens when Christopher disappears into the woods for nearly a week — only to return terribly changed, and obsessed with the knowledge that the fate of the world is in his hands. The chilling tale that follows takes in the secret lives and hidden shames of a community, a cosmic clash between mysterious forces, and the deep love between parent and child. We spoke to Stephen Chbosky in our podcast studio about his excursion into nightmare, and what drove him there.
We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us. Twenty years ago, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower made readers everywhere feel infinite. Now, Chbosky has returned with an epic work of literary horror, years in the making, whose grand scale and rich emotion redefine the genre. In Imaginary Friend, Chbosky takes us to Mill Grove, Pennsylvania — where seven year-old Christopher and his mother on the run. At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six awful days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete. Read it with the lights on.
