#219 Kristina McInnis – Fashion Blogging

The Next 100 Days Podcast

Kristina McInnis on Fashion Blogging We're going into the world of fashion today. I know, we're not that fashionable really. However, we have a fashion influencer and blogger as our guest today, Kristina McInnis! She's all the way from Portland, Oregon, and is going to tell us all about fashion blogging and about both her experience of and journey into the fashion blogging world. What interested you in fashion blogging? Originally, Kristina wanted to be a vet. However, she ended up getting an internship with Nordstrom during high school where she was introduced to fashion and people win the industry. She became part of their fashion board, learnt about the different positions within fashion, going to fashion shows. She also had a three-day intensive course where she learnt about marketing, design and was part of a show. That led her to thinking about how she could go down this avenue further. Fashion blogging wasn't something she had initially thought of. However, she worked for a company in New York, called College Fashionista. They employ college students nationwide to talk about fashion, lifestyle and college life. Writing for them monthly gave Kristina an experience of blogging. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kevin-the-fashion-blogger.mp4 Do you make fashion or do you follow it? Kristina definitely has her own style, but she bases her blogs on top trends, podcasts and instagram group feedback. As a result, she can be on top of the news in fashion. She talks about fashion, the lifestyle and she also does interviews with people from different industries that fit into fashion. Essentially, she uses a lot of different influences that she can write about. One of the main things she has to remember is that, despite her not being at college anymore, spring break and other college events are up and coming in people's minds. Therefore, she creates collections for college in this way to keep current with her college readers. Lockdown Kristina is indeed in lockdown in Portland, Oregon. However, she can still go for walks (and so takes her dog!) and there are limitations on numbers in shops, etc. Graham says masks don't do it for fashion but Kristina disagrees! People are getting really creative with it. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Masks-and-fashion.mp4 Lots of people are finding a lot of business in this area, especially through making them fashionable items. Kevin, however, is not wearing a mask while he walks his dog. As he noted, being North of Hadrian's Wall means he sees very little people on his walks. He was out for an hour and a half and saw 3 people the other day! And, more of a revelation is this: Graham went out for his first walk outside in 3 weeks! Portland, Oregon It's definitely growing and becoming super busy as people move in. Portland is a hot new place to go to on the West Coast side, an hour from the Oregon coast and 45 minutes from the mountains. So, it's an ideal place for beaches or skiing! What's the next best city from Portland, Oregon? Seattle is 3 hours away - home of Starbucks! What do you blog most about? Her avatar is a mid-twenties graduate, living down town and with a bit of money that she can buy high-priced items with. Kristina tries to write to her whenever she is blogging. She talks a lot of pieces that are dupes of high-end brands. She talks about pieces that are a third of the price of what the branded items may be. She has a particular focus on bags where she compares high-end brands and the dupes that look identical. How did she come up with her avatar? She grabbed a big group of people who had been following her for a while and asked them questions via a paid Zoom meeting. Because these people had been following her for a while, Kristina knew this was definitely her demographic. As a result, she asked them things like what were their spending habits (when do they spend for pleasure),

In the words of Christine Hunsicker who sold her first company to Yahoo for $850 million, "Alex will eat through a wall." Born in shopping paradise, Los Angeles, to a long line of sustainability entrepreneurs, Alex has always been passionate about conscious fashion. While in college at Boston University, Alex created a hobby-website called UNItiques to be a fun way for girls on campus to share closets. She was shocked when it spread to 600 campuses, and the demand from members outside of college continued to grow. Meanwhile, Alex was recognized as the "Face of Sustainability," as well as awarded the "Best New Venture" of 16,000 students, which got the attention of Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, College Fashionista, and even TV show Project Runway Startup on Lifetime. After graduating, Alex made it her mission to spread "relovving" fashion beyond the campus. She began developing Relovv, taking all the best pieces from UNItiques and combining them with new, unique features. Relovv launched in October 2018, and has been quickly backed by the prestigious Techstars Venture Accelerator. After launching Relovv, Alex was personally certified by Former Vice President Al Gore as a Climate Reality Leader, and is hailed as a speaker at world-class universities nationwide, including Harvard. Confidence is not something that Amy Levin is lacking. “No,” Amy says with a laugh, in response to whether or not her age or gender was ever an issue in the success of her business. Starting her company, College Fashionista, while actually still in college, Amy faced a unique set of challenges. Things such as managing work/school/life balance, and meetings with investors and business owners much older than she, would have been enough to intimidate any fresh-faced, young entrepreneur. But it never threw Amy off her game. Owing much of her unshakeable disposition to her parents, Amy never doubted that she has what it takes to take College Fashionista wherever she wanted it to go. While she always had faith in the success of her company, Amy, like any entrepreneur, did face challenges along the way. While she had a strong business and financial background, tech was not her strong suit, and she saw to it early on that she had a diverse board of advisors in place for when, inevitably, questions would arise that required a different perspective. Big Ideas - The value of self confidence, and how cultivating that mitigates feelings of inadequacy when faced with potentially difficult situations. [02:20] - The importance of flexibility. If you have a plan and it isn’t going the way you’d hoped, be open to adapting that plan. [22:21] - Surrounding yourself with a diverse group of background, age, experience, etc., will help you to overcome a greater range of challenges, because you will have a greater range of perspective. Starting when she was barely out of college herself, this media innovator has spent the better part of the last decade growing an audience and network of contributors that now reaches over 1,000 universities and includes 20,000 contributors worldwide. Acquired by Who What Wear parent company Clique Media in 2016, College Fashionista exemplifies modern-day, mission-based entrepreneurship and bootstrapped success. If you're building your own business from the ground up, this is one woman in business who's sure to inspire you and show you that, yes, you can make it happen. Meet this week's guest, Amy Levin Klein, Founder of College Fashionista. What you'll learn When you’re fresh out of college and starting out with dreams of a career in the fashion industry, it can be challenging and daunting to figure out what to do - especially if you're coming from a school or town outside the traditional fashion cities like New York or Los Angeles. Amy felt exactly that - but she didn't let it deter her. Instead, she started College Fashionista and single-handedly built a brand that helps the next generation of fashion leaders. Learn how she did it in this week’s episode. How you'll be inspired While today’s work culture tends to applaud employees and even entrepreneurs who jump around from one company to the next, Amy has a lot to say about the advantages of being professionally monogamous. While startup culture has left many of us feeling like a couple years is a long time to be in one place, Amy counters with a reality so many of us growing businesses know all too well: that building something takes time to see real growth.
