Two years ago for Halloween, I presented the first of my “Haunted Opera House” episodes. At the time, I had such a plethora of creepy musical material that I produced a bonus episode of material that otherwise would have ended up in the dung heap (like the body of Faust at the end of Schnittke's Faust Cantata, which closes the episode). We also hear music from Damn Yankees featuring the red-hot Gwen Verdon; Dvořák's Rusalka (a stunning duet with Teresa Stratas and Gwendolyn Killebrew); Respighi's comic opera Belfagor (in which a devil [Lajos Miller] encounters his superior in a cunning young woman [Sylvia Sass]; Ernest Bloch's Macbeth (in which Inge Borkh gives a luminous performance of Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking Scene); Willem Pijper's strange musical drama based on the medieval legend of Halewijn, a Bluebeard of the Lowlands; La Chute de la Maison Usher, (the climax of Claude Debussy's incomplete opera based on Edgar Allan Poe's Fall of the House of Usher); and Antikrist, Rued Langgaard's unique, indescribable, and nearly unstageable mystery play. But it is Iva Bittová's gleefully deranged performance of Alfred Schnittke's gruesome Faust tango which will, I predict, find its way into your nightmares! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Synopsis In 1952, the West Point Military Band celebrated that famous military academy's Sesquicentennial by asking prominent composers to write celebratory works to mark the occasion. Among those who responded was the American composer Morton Gould, whose “West Point Symphony” received its premiere performance on today's date in 1952, at a gala concert featuring the West Point Academy. There are two movements in Gould's “West Point Symphony.” They are titled “Epitaphs” and “Marches,” and the composer himself provided these descriptive comments: “The first movement is lyrical and dramatic… The general character is elegiac. The second and final movement is lusty… the texture a stylization of marching tunes and parades cast in an array of embellishments and rhythmic variations… At one point,” concludes Gould, “there is a simulation of a Fife and Drum Corp, which, incidentally, was the instrumentation of the original West Point Band.” Of all the pieces written in honor of West Point's Sesquicentennial in 1952, Gould's Symphony is probably the best-known. The score of the West Point Symphony calls for a “marching machine,” but on this classic 1959 recording under the late Frederick Fennell, the required sound was provided by the very real marching feet of 120 Eastman School of Music students. Kieran Hodgson tells Michael Berkeley how he turned his lifelong obsession with Mahler, and his own struggle to write a symphony, into comedy gold. Fortunately for us Kieran put aside an early ambition to become a train driver and has instead forged a career as one of our most entertaining actors, writers and comedians. He’s won awards and accolades at Edinburgh for shows on the unlikely subjects of school French exchanges, British politics in the 1970s – and his obsession with late-Romantic music. You might know him from his Radio 4 show Earworms – comic introductions to the great composers – and for his television roles in Two Doors Down, Upstart Crow and God’s Own County. And you might also be one of the tens of millions of people who have enjoyed his ‘Bad TV’ parodies on YouTube. Music is central to Kieran’s life: he’s been playing the violin in amateur orchestras since childhood and composing since he was in his teens. He chooses an unfairly neglected concerto by Bruch; Schnittke’s breath-taking Choir Concerto; and music by Schoenberg, by Bernstein and – in a first for Private Passions – by the Dutch cabaret artist Wim Sonneveld. Ved. Domantas Razauskas

Today's episode lands square in the midst of strange back-to-school transition. Heat, murder, love, election, health and politics. Of course, Sabbath Sessions has little to do with any of these, at least not directly. But perhaps a time out in the sonic temple can help provide some relief and clarification, should you need, or enhance the colors if you're already feeling switched ON. Touchstones for this episode (in the loosest possible way) are composer Alfred Schnittke and Roland S. Howard, guitarrorista del 'The Birthday Party'. As always, this session was improvised and recorded on the spot, in real time, with love. Thank you.

Today on Midday, a break from the news of the day, and focus on that which is great and good about the human condition. It’s Midday on Music. A little later, we’ll be treated to some tunes by the guitar/harp duo, Robin Bullock and Sue Richards. Their performance is posted separately here on the WYPR Website). We begin today with Hanzhi Wang. This virtuoso concert accordionist was born 29 years ago in China. She lives and teaches now in Copenhagen, Denmark, and she’s playing a concert in Columbia, Maryland Saturday night. She is the first accordionist to win the prestigious Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York. Ms. Wang is not your grandfather’s polka-playing accordionist, nor is she the organ-grinder busker in Little Italy with the dancing monkey. As you will hear, she is a virtuoso on an instrument that is not usually associated with art music. We are streaming our conversations today on the WYPR Facebook Page, so you can see that the instrument she is playing -- the button accordion -- doesn’t even look like most accordions you’ve seen before. During her live performance on Midday, Hanzhi Wang plays three pieces, in this order:“My Story” by Hanzhi Wang; “Etincelles” by Moritz Moszkowski; and “La Muerte del Angel” by Astor Piazzolla. Hanzhi Wang performs Saturday night (October 5) at a concert at the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College in Columbia. It’s part of the Candlelight Concert Society series. She'll play music of Bach, Rameau, Scarlatti, Grieg and Schnittke. The concert starts at 7:30. Wang's latest CD is called On the Path to H.C. Anderson on the Naxos label. It includes music by contemporary Danish composers. Hanzhi Wang is on the faculty of the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. She posts on Instagram.

Donald Macleod explores the strange, brilliant and occasionally nightmarish world of the Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke. The music of Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) is like being lost in a hall of mirrors. Staring back at you is the whole of music history - from Bach to modern pop via tangos, Soviet work songs, Gregorian chant and Viennese waltzes - refracted and distorted, and woven together to create a uniquely personal style. Thrilling, grotesque, occasionally nightmarish - Schnittke creates a world where everything has a hidden meaning. Beethoven's Fifth suddenly springs terrifyingly out of the darkness in the midst of an otherwise chaotic symphony. Or a cheap Russian pop song appears inexplicably amidst a Baroque chorale. Schnittke's world of suppressed meanings perfectly captured life under the cosh of Soviet Communism. All this week, Donald Macleod unpicks the strands of a musician often seen as the heir to Shostakovich - and perhaps the last truly great composer of the 20th century. Donald begins by exploring the connections - musical, psychological and spiritual - between Alfred Schnittke and the great titan of Soviet music, Dmitri Shostakovich. He then unravels the term "polystylism", which Schnittke himself coined to describe his fusing of wildly eclectic styles - from Bach to pop to hypermodernism to Tchaikovsky. We hear about Schnittke’s intense fame in the 1970s, and how his turn to a deeply devout musical style shocked the avant-garde and won him a whole new spectrum of admirers. Donald takes us through Schnittke’s most rollicking and significant year – 1985 – which saw the creation of five acknowledged masterpieces and the first of several crippling strokes. Seemingly, Schnittke’s mortality drove him to create ever more shattering music in his final years - to compose to the very bitter end, in the face of almost unimaginable physical challenges.
