POPULARITY
Our guest this week is guitar virtuoso Dean Parks! Dean was one of the first call session guys in the 70s and 80s that helped make great artists even better. He worked for Motown with legends like Stevie and Marvin, took his turn with Steely Dan and played the iconic solo in "Haitian Divorce" and can be heard on classics like "Laughter in the Rain", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Here You Come Again". There are also stories with MJ and the Jacksons, Billy Joel, David Lee Roth, Seal and tons more! Dean is an extremely mild mannered guy, but is still in high demand with a full dance card. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod www.deanparks.com
Discover Lafayette's sound engineer, Jason Sikora, has a voice many of you are familiar with, as he's participated in our interviews over the past seven years, ensuring a finely-tuned, professional podcast. Jason Sikora pictured with Butch Roussel during a recording of Discover Lafayette Podcast. But many of you may not know his interesting back story, or how he came to live and work in Lafayette LA. A native of Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Jason has a rich collection of memories to share and insights into how rock concerts are orchestrated. Jason's dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, but when Jason and his two brothers were young, the family moved to Hartland, Michigan to be able to escape the city life and its accompanying declining socio-economic factors in the 1980s. Describing Hartland as "basically a truck stop," it was much more. Jason graduated from Hartland High School, playing drums in its marching band and eventually serving as the Hartland Eagles' mascot. Sadly, Jason's younger brother, Kris, died when he was 11 years old, from a blood disorder. Kris' life and death had great meaning, however, as researchers were able to study his condition. Jason stated that today, people with Kris' condition would survive. Upon graduation from high school, Jason hightailed it to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute ("MI"), a college that was known as a 'player's school,' meaning that students were taught the skills to make a sustainable career in the music industry. While many young people could qualify to be a guitar tech based upon their self-taught abilities, Jason credited MI for a valuable education and teaching him guitar repair and cable management. " I started playing guitar in 6th grade, so I had six to seven years of experience with signal flow, how to solder microphones back together. I learned a lot in high school with my band, messing with pedals and guitars and amplifiers. I did learn guitar repair, cable management and how to get tone while in college at MI." Andy Brauer hired Jason right after graduation from MI, to work at his shop that specialized in instrument and musical gear rentals. Jason had the good fortune to work with Faith Hill in his very first gig, being hired to work at Skywalker Ranch to assist in recording track sessions. "I got to hang out with the best musicians in the world for a week: Mike Landau, Dean Parks, Paul Bushnell, and Vinnie Calaiuta are monster players!" Jason also got to witness the regular lives of performers such as Faith Hill, her husband, Tim McGraw, and their children, and realized how fortunate he was to be a part of this experience in the ordinary lives of superstars as the album was being cut. Jason then met Michael Lockwood, a guitarist who hired him to be a touring guitar tech for Aimee Mann, performing sound checks and restringing guitars, ensuring that all would go well during concerts. Jason would continue this type of work for several years, working with greats such as Lisa Marie Presley, Britney Spears, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as other acts during what he calls his 'lost years from 2004 to 2006', such as Hanson, Gerard McMahon, Puddle of Mudd, and the recording of "A Mighty Wind," an album accompanying a movie of the same name, featuring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and many other staples of comedy culture of the time. "The work ethic is very different when you're on the road. You're not allowed to be sick. The show must go on. If there is a half million dollar guarantee and there are 10,000 people out there, your rig has to work. There was always a doctor out there with water, vitamins, and oxygen. You have to do the show. There's no back-up. No one else would know my rig," says Jason Sikora. Asked if he missed traveling on the road for months as a time as a guitar tech,

Steve Lukather Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Hold the Line! Steve Lukather may be a bonafide rock star, but he's also down-to-earth, self-effacing, self-aware, open-minded, hearted, reflective, enthusiastic, passionate, thoughtful, generous, and perhaps sweetest of all, a fanboy like us of his heroes. From the 6-year-old boy blown away by The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, George's guitar specifically, to the grown man who came to play and friend not only George, but Paul, and closer than close with Ringo, his “boss” for the past decade. Fab stories of all three, not to mention much about Steve and then Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, with whom he began being a serious musician whilst still in high school. Stories about Steely Dan and their various incarnations, one which almost included him, Boz Scaggs, his first major gig, the formation of Toto, sessions, sessions, and more sessions, Dean Parks, Ray Parker, Jim Keltner, Larry Carlton, touring, alcohol, drugs, wild times, Michael Jackson, Thriller, Eddie Van Halen, Elton John, solo albums, his latest - Bridges https://bit.ly/40I9PH2 which is in heavy rotation in my kitchen, and his memoir, The Gospel According to Luke https://bit.ly/3QFLPPZ an unputdownable, crazy fun read. Just like Luke himself. The time flew. I feel like I've known him forever. And, like all great things, left me wanting more. Dean Parks Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Dean Parks has played with everyone on every album ever recorded. Close. His discography is so long I had to take rest breaks as I was scrolling. How many did we get to? Well, we polished some of the gemstones. A 5-year-old with a steel guitar, he was playing with the big boys at 6. Clarinet followed, and saxophone, which he still plays brilliantly, before focusing on guitar, where he is lord and master of the sessions. Starting with Sonny and Cher, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (in my top 10 of all time), Songs in the Key of Life, spectacular memories there, meeting Snuffy Walden and the years of work he did with him, Jimmy Webb, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, The Jackson Five, great fun there, Crosby, Stills and Nash, then Crosby and Nash, then Croz, having just rehearsed for an upcoming tour before his passing. Lovely feelings recounted. Touring with James Taylor, as his hands when he broke his, and the challenges of that. Lyle Lovett, and the wonderfulness there, Teresa James, Herbie Hancock, The Fabelmans… the man hasn't stopped since he started, nor has he ever had to choose even a temporary alternative to his talent and his passion. With no end in sight, if you're in LA you can catch him live at The Baked Potato. If not, just turn on your radio––songs past, present and no doubt well into the future will be featuring the skilled, soulful, spectacular virtuosity that is Dean Parks. Inside MusiCast rings in the new year with our first guest for 2023, guitarist Dean Parks! Dean is no stranger to liner notes geeks around the world and was home grown in the state of Texas. In fact, he was a member of the “One O'clock Lab Band'' at North Texas State while in college. Whatever it is that's in the water at North Texas, he drank it – along with other top musicians who have come out of that amazing music program - like David Hungate, several Snarky Puppy band members, Norah Jones, Jeff Coffin, Don Henley, Lyle Mays, and others. Fast forward to today and we find Dean still engaged with contributing his talents to new projects from Lyle Lovett, LeAnn Rimes, Herbie Hancock, Diane Warren, and so many others. This only confirms that after decades of playing LA sessions, Parks still remains an A-list guitarist. His iconic work for Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, America, Streisand and so many other great projects speaks for itself. Today we'll help fill in some of the gaps of his amazing career. Inside MusiCast is glad to welcome Dean Parks.
You may have heard the beautiful guitar intro for the 2000 hit song performed by Toni Braxton, “Spanish Guitar.” This solo was performed by renowned studio guitarist, Dean Parks. Although Parks played this solo with a pick, I am going to show you how to play it with your fingers while using common flamenco guitar techniques, such as arpegio, picado, ligado, and rasgueados. You won't want to miss with tutorials for the flamenco guitar. If you've ever been asked to play something “Spanish” on the guitar, then this solo is just what you've been looking for, because not only will I teach you one…but TWO flamenco rasgueados or “rasgueos,” or AKA: "rajeos." Enjoy! _______________________________________________

**NOTE** This episode was recorded in November 2019 and published on my other podcast, The Songwriters Podcast. In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with singer, songwriter, guitarists, storyteller, sailor and road warrior, Scott Kirby. We talk about his long career as a musician, and where he goes for writing inspiration, and how a little bit of luck took him a long way. More on Scott Website: https://www.scottkirby.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scottkirbykeywest/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scottkirby.keywest Singer, songwriter, guitarist, storyteller, sailor and road warrior are all words that aptly describe Scott Kirby. Writing songs for a new CD, performing 150 live shows a year throughout the US and Canada, and holding down the stage at his own club—Key West’s Smokin’ Tuna Saloon—keep the barnacles off this modern-day troubadour. A creative lyricist and accomplished finger-style acoustic guitarist with an expressive voice, Kirby describes himself as a direct descendant of the ’70s singer/songwriter movement. His very first 45 was a Beatles record, and he came of musical age listening to James Taylor and other great songwriters of that era. He has never received any formal musical training but often credits Taylor with teaching him how to play the acoustic guitar. “If it weren’t for the hundreds of solitary hours in my room in Concord, New Hampshire, with a guitar and a James Taylor book, I never would have learned to play,” says Kirby. Speaking of New Hampshire and musical influences, let’s not forget fellow New Hampshire native Tom Rush who was taking the folk scene by storm in Kirby’s formative years. Coincidentally, Kirby connected with both of these artists in Key West 30 years later, which is a whole other story. After a few years in high school bands and a stint in his early 20s as a bass guitarist with a group, Kirby drifted away from music and became immersed in a career in politics: managing campaigns, writing and producing radio and TV ads, and overseeing the office of a leader in the New Hampshire legislature. He was also guitarless for eight years! In 1988, however, after tiring of the political rat race and the length and severity of New England winters, he bought a new guitar, relentlessly practiced his chops, and planned his escape. Six months later Kirby was living in Key West and performing five nights a week on a balmy beach facing the Gulf of Mexico. Kirby started writing songs after some inspirational late-night words from legendary songwriter Shel Silverstein and further encouragement from Peter Mayer, who had just joined the Coral Reefer Band. A year later he found himself recording his first CD, Too Damn Yankee, in Jimmy Buffett’s Shrimpboat Sound Studio with Peter and Jim Mayer and Roger Guth. “This was a very lucky break for me, but I was in a bit over my head,” says Kirby. “Peter, Jim and Roger were incredibly patient with me and it was a fantastic learning experience.” Between 1993 and 2006, Kirby continued to write new material and recorded four more CDs with Key West producer/engineer Dan Simpson. In 2008 luck struck again when famed drummer/producer Russ Kunkel offered to produce Kirby’s Row Me Home CD at his studio in Los Angeles. “Next thing I know I’m cutting my songs in the Hollywood Hills with Russ, bassist Leland Sklar and guitarist Dean Parks and feeling like the luckiest guy in the world.” Speaking of luck, Kirby’s wistful ballad “Lucky Enough” struck a chord with listeners on Sirius/XM Radio Margaritaville, which exposed his music to more markets around the country and led to his current touring schedule through 35 states each year. He continues to receive regular airplay on the station. Kirby joined a group of friends in 2011 to open the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, a 200-seat bar and music venue in Key West where Kirby performs often in winter months. The Tuna is also host to the Key West Songwriter’s Festival. The festival is in its 20th year and has exploded into the largest event of its kind in the country, featuring more than 150 songwriters every year. In 2013 Kirby released his seventh CD, Sol Searching, a collaboration with producer/engineer/musician Lew London. “Lew was great to work with as he’s so multi-talented,” says Kirby. “He performed for years with Steve Goodman and is such a fine songwriter in his own right that he really understands how to build a sound around acoustically based songs.” Scott Kirby’s latest CD, Chasing Hemingway’s Ghost, was recorded with and produced by Matt and Andy Thompson in their studio in Nashville and released in 2017. When it comes to songwriting, Kirby respects authenticity and counts on everyday life and his coastal roots for much of his inspiration. “I don’t wake up every day thinking about writing the next commercial hit,” says Kirby. “Songwriting for me is about telling stories, expressing emotions, and commentary on things I may find funny or absurd.” Over the years Kirby has shared the stage with some of his favorite artists: Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Livingston Taylor, Tom Rush, Mac McAnally, Peter Mayer and others. When not on the road or performing in Key West, Kirby splits his time between Livingston, Montana, and the coast of New Hampshire where he can often be found sailing, a lifelong passion of this descendant of Newfoundland fishermen. Yes, Scott Kirby is—as he readily admits—lucky enough.

Every so often a new singer emerges who’s able to assimilate multiple musical touchstones and still come off sounding remarkably fresh and unburdened by the past. Kandace Springs is one of those artists. The 27-year-old, Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes, but as evidenced by her sparkling full-length blue note records debut, Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them. The eleven songs contained on Soul Eyes all feature Springs playing piano alongside an illustrious cast of musicians that includes trumpeter Terence Blanchard, guitarists Dean Parks and Jesse Harris, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, organist Pete Kuzma, bassist Dan Lutz and percussionist Pete Korpela. Soul Eyes is available on Amazon. Follow Kandace Springs on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
