About the Episode: Julie Lowe shares her passion around kids/teens, especially those that are suffering. As Julie felt led by Scripture and the stories of broken families in the Bible, she felt led to pursue her counseling degree. Julie and her husband have a beautiful story behind their adopted children – the beauty as well as the hardship. She dives into what the Gospel is as it relates to raising children, families, and brokenness. She describes the “fast food” lifestyle of families instead of nourishing relationships through time and deep engagement, which involves being countercultural instead of embracing what is around us as it relates to technology specifically. She offers encouragement to families even if they feel it is too late to develop a relationship with their child or have “failed” in certain ways with their families. She highlights the importance of looking to God rather than the world or even other families as to how to shepherd their family looking for a formula. Julie also gave an equipping conversation at PCPC on her book “Safeguards,” and we have that linked below in the resources. About Our Guest: Julie Lowe is an author, speaker, and counselor. She holds an MA in counseling from Biblical Theological Seminary, is a licensed professional counselor with over twenty-five years of counseling experience, and is a registered play therapist supervisor. Julie has extensive experience teaching, speaking, and consulting with churches, schools, and other organizations around the country. She regularly teaches on topics such as marriage, women's issues, sexual abuse, body image issues, parenting, adoption, and child maltreatment issues. She is trained in leading mandated reporter trainings and provides numerous trainings on child sexual abuse. Julie has a registered therapy dog that she works with both professionally and on a volunteer basis. Her work and resources have been widely promoted by organizations such as Focus on the Family, The Evangelical Counsel for Abuse Prevention. and Paul Tripp's Connecting Podcast. About the Episode: This podcast is encouraging to many of us who are busy with the ways the world seeks to fulfill us but seek rest in the Lord. The culture around us seeks for everyone to do more and more while not counting the costs. There can tend to be an innate sense of wanting to feel limitless, and along with that comes immense pressure to "keep up." How do we move from what the culture says is possible to how we are meant to live as believers trusting in the Lord? These women share their process as they think through which activities their families participate in. They share how fear is a motivation behind too many activities and their desire to have freedom from that fear. If you are struggling with issues related to anything, please don't hesitate to reach out to deeplight@pcpc.org or 214-224-2500. About Our Guests: Lindsey Sheppard and her husband, Clayton, have been married for almost 17 years. They have an eleven-year-old son, a nine-year-old daughter, and a six-year-old daughter. Sara Hale loves being married to her husband, John, and being the mother of their two children. She is a member of PCPC who says "hello" to Aunt Carol, who watches the services from California each week. Kristen Hatton is a Christian author, speaker, and Licensed Professional Counselor Associate supervised by Kari Stainback, LPC-S. She has written three books for teenagers, one specifically addressing adolescent girls' struggle for identity and worth, and her latest book for parents, Parenting Ahead (April 2023 release date). In addition, she started a ministry for parents called Redemptive Parenting that includes The Redemptive Parenting Podcast. But after nearly 25 years of mothering and lay counseling stirred her desire for further training to better walk alongside those dealing with such issues as stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and relational issues that she commonly encountered, Kristen returned to school for a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. As a professional counselor, Kristen works primarily with teen girls, young adult women, parents, and families. While she naturally operates from a biblical worldview integrating faith in counseling, Kristen gladly meets all clients where they are, for she believes the most important aspect of counseling is in the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, because Kristen does not see counseling as a one-fit-for-all, she draws from several counseling modalities, including family systems and cognitive behavioral therapy. Kristen and her husband have three adult children and a son-in-law. Outside of work, Kristen is active in her church and enjoys being outdoors, traveling, entertaining, writing, and watching football. Her writing can be found at kristenhatton.com as well as on the Rooted Ministry website and in LifeWay magazine's ParentingTeens magazine. About the Episode: Author Kelly Kapic discusses how God places limits on our lives to bring us closer to Him through true dependence. In a world where limits are seen as negative, Dr. Kapic talks about the beauty of those limits, brought about by some of his own personal journey as well as being a professor. Limits can be seen as physical, emotional, educational, relational, age-related, or many other things. Hear them discuss the unintended consequences of trying to do all the world says we have to do to keep up or get ahead and whether we are even asking God. How can we live counter-culturally with regard to accepting our limits and abiding in Christ? There is so much beauty in God's design. About the Episode: Hear women share the pressure they face this side of heaven about how they should look but ultimately how image is a heart issue. We long to honor the Lord with our bodies as believers. On this side of heaven, beauty is insatiable and will never be enough. Our host describes what he calls the “i” formation. An issue leads to insecurity which leads to idols and then an irritant. Our Savior died so we could be stripped of all of these artificial insecurities and live in the security and identity of being His beloved son or daughter. About the Episode: Hear Pat talk about what grief is and how to feel encouraged yourself or walk alongside someone in any form of grief. This feeling of loss, whether it is loss of dreams, person, job, or identity, leaves people feeling unstable. Those grieving must learn to raise their hands and ask for help. That can be super scary and not something they have experienced in the past. They have typically suppressed or simply not dealt with those feelings and have some very entrenched coping ways as to how they do that. They also must realize they need a “team.” It is not that they have one person on the journey with them, but several serving in different roles. People need others to empathize and come alongside them. The grieving person needs to know you are there and that they are not a burden. Hear how we as believers can come alongside those grieving. If you are struggling with grief or the pain of loss, please don't hesitate to reach out to deeplight@pcpc.org or 214-224-2500. (**This episode was recorded prior to the tragedy in Nashville. About the Episode: The nature of this topic may not be suitable for children so please take note of your environment prior to listening out loud! Join us for a series on sexuality, God's design and vision for sex for both married couples and single people, and the richness of experiencing oneness with God. Sex is one of God's special gifts for how we can really know and understand God's love for us. In this episode, Ruth and Stephen Meek discuss intimacy and oneness through the gift of sex and union. As quoted by Dr. Gary Barns, “The Big O of marriage is not Orgasm, it is Oneness.” About Our Guests: Ruth & Stephen have been married for 37 years, are parents of four, and grandparents of eight. Stephen was the fifth of nine children raised in a nominally Italian Catholic family that moved to a new city every few years due to his father's career. While Stephen had no interest in the things of God, God nonetheless pursued him by using Stephen's love of books. The Author of life God breathed spiritual life into Stephen at age 29 when he was reading the Book of Psalms, specifically Psalm 25. Soon after his conversion, Stephen married his still now love-of-his life Jonnie Ruth McLeod. His wedding ring is engraved with the words “Hearts knit together in Christ” alluding to Colossians 2:2. Stephen and Ruth had four children who are now adults and have started their own families. Stephen has spent his entire professional career in multifamily real estate, beginning with Marcus & Millichap in Palo Alto, CA, and since 2011 with StreetLights Residential as Senior Vice President of Development. In his real estate career, Stephen has experienced the honor of working with some of the greatest leaders in the industry and the excitement of taking part early in several newly formed “start-ups” such as The Staubach Company, Columbus Realty Trust, The Apartment Group, Rivendell Development, and StreetLights Residential. In his personal life, the list includes The Providence Christian School of Texas, The Cambridge School of Dallas, and Park Cities Presbyterian Church which Stephen would affirm all helped him and Ruth raise their children alongside other covenant parents and according to the truth of God's Word. Ruth is the founder of Redeeming Messages, a teaching/speaking ministry for Christian women in which her most requested topic is, Redeeming Shulamite, a message encouraging wives to elevate-not relegate-their marriage beds. To enhance her understanding of human sexuality, Ruth took a series of courses at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) on the subject. While a student there, Ruth became a part of The Institute for Sexual Wholeness (ISW) from which she earned the title, Sexual Educator. This credential qualifies Ruth to teach a series of spiritual, Sex Ed courses. The mission of ISW is To Create a Sexually Healthy Church. This has become Ruth's mission as well. Two quotes drive Ruth's desire to help break the church's code of silence about sex: “Sex is private not secret.” -Douglas Wilson and “God will hold us accountable for every permissible pleasure we ignore.” -The Talmud About Our Host:A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mark Davis came to PCPC as our Youth Pastor in 2003 and became our Senior Pastor in 2009. About the Episode: Join us for a series on sexuality, God's design and vision for sex for both married couples and single people, and the richness of experiencing oneness with God. Sex is one of God's special gifts for how we can really know and understand God's love for us. This episode provides an opportunity to hear from Dr. Gary Barnes, a psychologist, ordained minister, and professor at Dallas Theological Seminary about sacred sexuality, spiritual warfare around God's gift of sex, and the fig leaves we metaphorically cover ourselves with today. When it comes to sex, that's where we are most bare naked, and self-protection becomes a very powerful negative response. Oftentimes, we try to make sex accomplish things that God didn't have in mind for sex and try to meet legitimate needs that are not sexual, sexually. About Our Guest: Dr. Barnes is an ordained minister and a licensed psychologist who specializes in marriage and family research, counseling, and training. After graduating from DTS, he served as an assistant pastor for seven years. While in the New York area, he was a research project coordinator at NYU Medical Center's Family Studies Clinic and later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship through Parkland Hospital (Dallas) and the Child Guidance Clinics of Dallas and Texoma. His great celebrations of life are his wife, four adult kids plus three more by marriage, ten grandkids, and bicycle racing. Steve and Marsha Williamson share their stories as parents of a child who struggled with addiction and mental illness. They share how the two diseases both work together and are progressive. The wake of destruction for a family is large. However, God has a plan and is sovereign, and there is an ultimate hope of being with our loved ones again completely healed in Heaven. About Our Guest: Steve and Marsha Williamson are founding members of Park Cities Presbyterian Church. Steve is a Shepherding Elder, is a member of the Worship Committee, is active in the music ministry of our church, and serves as Managing Director for Transwestern in the commercial real estate business in DFW. Dallas 24 provides transitional living, support services, and essential life skills for homeless alcoholics and addicts, so they can embrace long-term sobriety and become self-supporting and contributing members of the community. Steve and Marsha's oldest son, Scott, suffered from mental health and addiction issues from an early age. He passed away four years ago. They felt tremendous support from their children, Marsha's brother, Pat Hobin, many PCPC friends and the pastoral staff, as well as Al-Anon and Marsha's Sponsor. They would encourage anyone with a loved one suffering from addiction to embrace Al-Anon which teaches you how to deal with your loved one and also make changes in your own life! Steve and Marsha's other two sons (Logan and Kirk) married sisters from New Orleans (Amanda and Allyson), and the four of them now live in Dallas with their children Emma Grace (12), Kyle (8), and Elliott (1 ½). While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' On hearing this, Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.' -Matthew 9:9-13 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” -Hebrews 10:24-25 (music license ASLC-14EAD3E0-84F34F4276)
About the Episode: Join us for a series on Rest in which we discuss what it means to take time to be still in a world that is so addicted to activity. We are going to talk about how rhythms of rest, stillness, and quiet can be a blessing in our lives. In this episode, Mark interviews Elizabeth Robinson on her journey of faith and prayer through a growing family, being led by the Lord to Scripture, and her calling to intercession. What is intercession? Elizabeth and Mark discuss the joy of ‘standing in the gap for another' in prayer and the privilege of coming directly and boldly to the throne of grace because of Jesus Christ. If you experience feelings of inadequacy, you are not alone. Tune in to hear Elizabeth share about how God showed her that loving Him is the greatest calling, and we can find true joy through asking for His presence as we go about our day. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” - Psalms 107:19-21 “Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” -Hebrews 7:25 “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.” -Colossians 1:9-12 About the Host: A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mark Davis came to PCPC as our Youth Pastor in 2003 and became our Senior Pastor in 2009. About the Episode: Join us for a series on Rest in which we discuss what it means to take time to be still in a world that is so addicted to activity. We are going to talk about how rhythms of rest, stillness, and quiet can be a blessing in our lives. In this episode, Mark interviews Lauren and Sam Huffines on how to find rest as a married couple and young family. The trio discusses the importance of a framework around how to decide what to say yes to, the power of community and fellowship in the same stage of life, and finding rest in a culture that challenges us to keep an unsustainable pace. Sometimes, the casualty of such a pace is the marriage and it's so important to put time in to remember why you got married and why you love each other. Through surrender, we find our foundation in doing things WITH God. About the Episode: Join us for a series on Rest in which we discuss what it means to take time to be still in a world that is so addicted to activity. We are going to talk about how rhythms of rest, stillness, and quiet can be a blessing in our lives. In this episode, we talk to Mary Springer, Sarah Wood, and Victoria Webster about their experience having gone on a Silent Retreat. We are made to need rest, just as Jesus, being fully man, needed time away to rest and pray as well. This episode explores the power of Christ's love in His omnipresence, the liveliness of scripture, especially when we are alone with it, and the restoration that comes from prayer and stillness, knowing that He is God. Resources: To learn more about Silent Retreats and register for upcoming events, please visit: https://pcpc.org/silent-retreats/ A silent retreat is an extended time in which an individual seeks to be alone with the Lord to listen and be transformed by His Word and Spirit. At a specific place for a specific amount of time, a person retreats (stops) from their everyday routine and relationships to meditate (listen) on God's Holy Word and then do what His Word says (follow). The purpose of a silent retreat is to STOP! LISTEN! FOLLOW! On a retreat, the goal for each participant is to open the Word of God and listen. A Bible and journal are all that is needed to bring. Good things, even music, books, instruments, computers, and cell phones, can also keep us from hearing the voice of God through His Word and Spirit. Each person on a retreat is going to pray and meditate and listen for God's agenda, not his or her own. As the Lord leads, we are confident that He will make Himself known in a way that will have a profound impact on each participant. In this episode, Mark shares how the act of journaling can slow down our restless minds and help with the inner noise to take the Word of God and let it soak into our hearts. One recommendation is using the acronym of ACTS: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication to reflect and record. It is so powerful to see God's faithfulness through the recording of things you have prayed for. When seasons change, there is an opportunity for new rhythms. This Summer may be a great time to try journaling as a way to connect His Word as an anchor for encouragement to face all sorts of trials and as well as record all sorts of victories. “For people who are struggling to calm their mind down or who just like to have a way of looking back and seeing God's faithfulness, I think [journaling] is a great habit to get into.” -Mark Davis Reach out to us at deeplight@pcpc.orgwith any questions or feedback anytime! About the Episode: Join us for a series on "rest," in which we discuss what it means to take time to be still in a world that is so addicted to activity. We talk about how rest, stillness, and quiet rhythms can be a blessing in our lives. In this episode, Mark discusses the impact of solitude, silence, and resting with the Lord. So many of us are overcommitted and may be experiencing life moving at a pace that is not sustainable. Tune in to hear how to first get all external distractions out of the way and then tone down the internal ones. Mark shares what a Sabbath can look like, the blessing of meditation, and a formula he uses for prayer: Adoration, Confessions, Thanksgiving, Supplication. We can truly rest in God's Word and let it guide our prayers and days by reading one verse or passage and meditating on it repeatedly. What are the idols of our life, and what are we motivated by? We are encouraged to set time aside to ask the Lord how He wants us to spend our days. If we don't spend time listening to the Lord, we consume the idols, and then they consume us. Every time you say yes to something, you are saying no to something else, so we hope this episode inspires you to say yes to the blessing of quiet time with God. About the Episode: Join us to hear from PCPC's Ministry Leader of High School, Will Washington as we discuss Gen Z, their exposure to the brokenness of this world because of technology, and how this can affect outside pressures but also their awareness and hunger for truth and mission. Will talks about how this generation will crave mentoring and that what lights kids up is the thought of living on a mission. Our children are really watching where we are anchoring in moments of crisis, doubt, or fear, and we want them to really sense that we are resting in Him being enough. If you are listening to this and you don't feel you live this way, it's never too late. One of the most powerful things that children can witness is your own transformation. What happens in the family is so transformational, and that's how God designed it to be. The relational pursuit of seeking biblical answers with your children is powerful. As Will says in this episode, “The gospel is not what we do; it's what Jesus has done, and that's what changes us.” About Our Guests: Will Washington is the Ministry Leader of High School at Park Cities Presbyterian Church. Will grew up in Dallas and graduated from Highland Park High School in 2009. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2012 with a B.A. in Philosophy and minors in Psychology and Religion and from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Christian Education. Before joining PCPC, Will worked for the youth ministries of several churches, as a counselor and Program Director at T Bar M Sports Camp, as a Bible teacher at Cornerstone Crossroads Academy, and as the Executive Director of Armour Up Ministries. He is also currently a broadcaster for Highland Park High School's football, basketball, and baseball teams. In ministry, his passion is teaching God's Word in the context of relationships and seeing Scripture fuel a love for Jesus and His mission in someone's heart and life. He is also passionate about his Oklahoma Sooners and Boston Red Sox. Resources: The PCPC High School Ministry desires to help students connect to Christ and one another, abide in Christ, and extend Christ to the world. Our main opportunities to get connected are our weekly Small Groups, weekly High School Sunday Mornings, monthly Gatherings, and special events. See below for more information on how to get connected, and please let someone on our staff know if we can serve you in any way. Small Groups are at the heart of our ministry because we believe that discipleship happens best in smaller contexts. They are an opportunity for students to build deep and lasting relationships with leaders and each other while applying Scripture to their lives. Separated by grade and gender, they meet at various times weekly during the school year at host homes. If your student is not currently in a small group and you would like them to join one, there are opportunities for each grade/gender to get connected. About the Episode: Join us today to hear from Mary Flo and Megan about a new, effective, and wholesome way to talk to your children about sex. There can be a lot of fear, awkwardness, and difficulty in approaching children with “the talk.” But rather than one serious conversation on the verge of pubescence, The Birds & Bees offer a simple way for parents to enter into these conversations that are not complicated, not sensual, but biblical and to the point of the beauty of His design. And then to talk about the boundaries that protect that beauty and that cause that beauty to flourish and then the brokenness outside of the boundaries. This method encourages parents to establish a family mission statement, offer open communication without shame, and anchor their children in knowledge from you which in fact becomes their protection. As Megan says, we want to start when they are young because we create a safe place that our kids can come to when they have questions. This way, over the years, we have established this pattern of trust and communication and this habit of: ‘I have a curious question, I can go to mom and dad, and I can trust that they will give me accurate information.' Visit www.birds-bees.com and follow @birds_bees on Instagram for more guidance on how to have honest and open communication from the early stages that help give your children a strong foundation in your voice and your values as they grow and learn about the beautiful gift from God that sex is. About Our Guests: The Birds & Bees founder, Mary Flo Ridley, has been passionately sharing this message all over the world for 30 years. Mary Flo and her husband Dave have been married for 40 years, they have three married children and eight grandchildren. After growing up in El Paso, Mary Flo graduated from SMU. She loves playing with her grandchildren, baking, and traveling! Megan Michelson joined Mary Flo at Birds & Bees almost 6 years ago to help bring this message to a new generation of parents. Megan was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and graduated from Baylor University. Before diving into the world of sex education, Megan was a middle school teacher. She and her husband Blake have been married for 12 years and have three young kids. She's in the trenches of motherhood... so happy and so tired! Resources: The Birds and the Bees created an online course for parents of ages 1-10. Mary Flo and Megan created a curriculum with tired and busy parents in mind! Each session takes just a few minutes to watch and will give you practical, easy-to-use tools and leave you feeling equipped, empowered and even excited. https://birds-bees.com/pages/courses Tune into the Birds & Bees podcast to hear about topics like protecting our children from pornography, body exploration, and normalizing periods. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-birds-bees/id1553412228 Follow them on Instagram! @birds_bees About the Host: A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mark Davis came to PCPC as our Youth Pastor in 2003 and became our Senior Pastor in 2009. For newly marrieds (up to ~3 years), PCPC fosters Small Groups. Newly Married couples are encouraged to join a small group community to study and discuss biblical marriage and the tools you need to be successful in your relationship. These groups are typically 5-6 couples and are facilitated by a seasoned married couple. These groups typically meet weekly for 12-18 months to focus solely on marriage themes. re|engage is a marriage enrichment program. Marriages in any condition can benefit, whether you are struggling to get along, your marriage is broken, or you simply want to grow closer together as a couple. re|engage examines God's design for marriage and applies principles from the Bible to guide couples towards growth in their relationship with each other. You can expect to: - Receive encouragement by hearing stories from other couples that have experienced victory in the midst of hard times. - Be placed in a small group with a facilitator couple and other couples to work through a 16-lesson curriculum. We also offer monthly gatherings outside of Sunday mornings which help to provide more opportunities for connection and fellowship, especially for those who can't be with us on Sundays. https://pcpc.org/communities/family-foundations/ Verse: “Be still and know that I am God.” -Psalm 46:10 (music license ASLC-14EAD3E0-84F34F4276)
About the Episode and Our Guests: Join us to hear from a group of friends who have walked through - and prayed through - life together for a long time. Flora, Stephanie, Michelle, and Eugenia discuss with Mark what fosters a safe place to be able to share and be vulnerable. This group of women started meeting as a gathering of young moms who got together to pray over their children. They didn't begin with a plan, but they know that God did. From “Play and Pray,” their community of deep friendship grew through ages and stages, through ups and downs, with adjustment and flexibility. Tune in to learn about fellowship, our calling to simply love one another, and about how to pray both individually and as a group. Flora Neuhoff is married to Tom, and together, they have six children between the ages 28 to 15. They joined PCPC in 1993. Stephanie Briggs and her husband, TD, have four children ages 30, 29, 26, and 20. She and TD grew up in Dallas and started attending PCPC in 1991. Michelle Scudder and her husband, Mark, have three children ages 30, 28, and 26. They have lived in Dallas and gone to PCPC for 30 years. Eugenia Fersing is married to David, and they have twin girls who are 29, one daughter who is 25 and two grandbabies. They have been at PCPC since it started. About the Host: A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mark Davis came to PCPC as our Youth Pastor in 2003 and became our Senior Pastor in 2009. He and his bride, Kristina, met at a Young Life Camp in 1988 and have five amazing kids, Kara (and husband, Drew), Madalyn (and husband, Jack), Cayden, Esther Kate, & Samuel. Resources: To learn more about opportunities to find a Small Group, please visit https://pcpc.org/small-groups/. Growth in Christ happens several ways, and one way is through relationships with others. We were not meant to go at the Christian life alone. God designed us to need each other. We grow as we pursue Christ together. Small groups exist as a key place for relational discipleship, friendship, and Gospel-empowered service. They are a group of six-to-sixteen people who meet regularly in a home during the week. The hope is that Small Groups make disciples who make disciples, so that our church is strengthened, and lives are transformed (Ephesians 4:13) as the gospel is applied to all aspects of life. They are an integrated part of PCPC spiritual formation and mission. If you are new to PCPC or are looking for a way to grow deeper with others in our church, consider joining a small group that meets in a home! This is a great place to form new friendships, find a place of belonging and to be formed in Christ. There are currently two types of small groups that meet in homes: neighborhood-based and life-stage based. To learn more, email SmallGroups@pcpc.org. "Running Scared: Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest," by Edward T. Welch Verses: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” -Hebrews 10:24-25 “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” -Isaiah 26:3 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” -Matthew 5:16 (music license ASLC-14EAD3E0-84F34F4276)
About the Episode: Join us today to hear Bill and Brenda Bogart open up with humility about how marriage is like a full-length mirror into yourself, your sin, and your selfishness. While this can cause deep brokenness, it is also a sanctifying tool for the Lord to show us where we need to grow. When we marry, we marry a sinner yet our primary identity and permanent identity is in the Lord who shows us grace and mercy. As Bill says, when we understand the Lord's love for us, that's when we can be most successful in loving our spouse. Brenda reveals that God has done His best work in the rich soil of brokenness. This is scary, yet even through pain, we can listen to the Lord through our relationships and community. Bill and Brenda also share their thoughts on comforting a friend in pain through listening with emotion; not to comment, not to fix it, not to agree with it even, but to truly listen and try to understand. Experiencing this type of love and Godly counsel in community is the essence of Christianity. Lastly, Bill and Brenda provide wise guidance to ask for help before the storm and to go find your counselor now so that they know you and know your story. Bill recommends that every couple needs an accountability couple, a pastor, mentors, and/or a counselor and that successful marriage is about humility. We desire for you to walk away from this episode with hope, love, and humility. About our guests, Bill and Brenda Bogart: Bill's life mission is to work with couples on preparing for and improving marriage. He also mentors men around money and career. He married Brenda in 2005 and has 6 children and 2 grandchildren. They enjoy working in marriage ministry, taking long walks with their beagles, and an occasional bike ride around the lake. Brenda Bogart is a Dallas artist renowned for her compelling and conversation-starting collage work and paintings of famous, historical figures from Lincoln to Einstein. A visit to her airy studio readily reveals her inspiration. It is filled with a fascinating collection of centuries-old handwritten letters, colorful handmade papers from around the world, plus various eclectic objects she has collected during her travels. Her latest passion has been hosting collaborative collage workshops to benefit Jubilee Park and Community Center, a group that has revitalized a neighborhood in Southeast Dallas. **UPDATE: We apologize for the confusion, but the audio for next week's podcast was posted today. If you heard a panel on Singleness, you are a week ahead. The correct audio on Friendship will replace it.** About the Episode: We invite you to join us today to hear from two longtime friends, George and David, as they share about the importance of intimate friendship. A lot of times, we'll present a facade of whatever we think is acceptable and whatever will gain our approval. If you're accepted for your facade, you're not really known for who you are. So, you're lonely because you're really not known and you're really not accepted. But if you have a friend in your life who really knows what's going on and still accepts you, then you're really not alone or lonely. As David shares, the devil does his best work in isolation. We learn from George and David about how to hold an intimate friendship, and how to go deeper. David guides us in sharing that it's all about the questions you ask: How's your marriage? What are you most afraid of? What are you thinking about? What is your happy place? Are you abiding in Christ? George and David discuss how the most important thing is just to listen. When we start talking and there is someone to listen, the light shines on our lives, and we can almost counsel ourselves. We just need someone to listen sometimes. Despair may happen. One of the things you want when that happens is a deep friend who you can turn to in those times. During one of these times for George, David shared the following and we hope it blesses you as much as it has blessed this wonderful friendship: ”Do all you can do today. Go home and be with your family. God gives us enough grace for today. Don't borrow worry from the future.” About our Guests: George Hanson grew up in Florida and moved to Dallas in 1990 after graduating from Florida State University. He attended Southern Methodist University, earned his MBA in Marketing, and held several Marketing/Sales roles with companies such as Pioneer Electronics, Nokia, and Intuit. During the Great Recession, he transitioned to insurance and opened a Farmers Insurance Agency in 2010. He started attending Park Cities Presbyterian Church in 1991 and is currently an elder there. He met his wife Jennifer in the singles ministry, and they have three wonderful children: Haley, Laine, and Chase. David Newman grew up in Dallas and graduated from the University of Texas. He is the Chief Operating Officer of Family Legacy Ministry, an organization that seeks to glorify God by serving the vulnerable and orphaned children of Zambia so they can live up to their God-given potential. Prior to joining Family Legacy, he was the President of Newman Graphics, a division of ColorMark Printing located in Carrollton, Texas. He has been at Park Cities Presbyterian Church since it started and currently serves as an elder and co-teacher of Believers Fellowship Class. David is married to Leslie, and together they have three children: Bryan, Margaret, and John David. About the Guest: Audrey Hardin is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Dallas and McKinney, Texas with Hardin Life Resources and serves with their non-profit ministry, Business and Professional Outreach Intl (BPO). She is committed to counseling the whole person through an integrated approach as modeled after Luke 2:52. She holds certifications in attachment and trauma-informed techniques that utilize current neurobiological and physiological research and uses this training in her work with individuals, couples, and groups. Audrey is also a Splankna practitioner and Certified Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider (CMHIMP) and works with her clients to experience greater healing through exploring the connection between emotional and physical symptoms such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, and autoimmune diseases. Like the other Hardins, Audrey approaches the therapeutic process as a blueprint for growth that integrates the whole person. To become "healthy and happy" you must become aware of and nurture development in all four parts of yourself: Physical, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual. “My goal is to foster holistic growth and help empower you to find and live a full, meaningful life by using collaborative, evidence-based therapy. I believe that through a commitment to growth people can change and therefore, their world can change. There's a lot of dark, painful brokenness in the world and knowing that restoration is possible through growth gives me hope. Together, we will discover and move through the roadblocks in your past or present that are holding you back personally, relationally or professionally.” In addition to her private practice, Audrey is a sought-after speaker and workshop leader in Faith-based settings throughout the South. Her expertise in holistic psychology has set her apart and empowered her clients to get “unstuck” from their troublesome thoughts, emotions, behaviors and relational patterns. About the Episode: We are excited to launch this series on Relationships. Join us to hear from Audrey Hardin, LPC, to discuss how we can foster relationships that allow us to live out our freedom in Christ. Often, it is through relationships that brokenness is magnified. Yet, God does not call us to live in relational hurt; He calls us to trust in Him. The way that we go about life, if we don't resolve our hurts and losses, ends up being self-protective, and God does not call us to live in self-protection. He calls us to live and walk by faith in His love. Tune in to hear Audrey's wisdom and experience on how to evaluate where we are physically, relationally, spiritually, and emotionally, so that we can foster healthy relationships. Mark is a closet Architect and fountain pen apologist…don't get him started! About the Episode: Join us for this episode to hear about how Page walks alongside children, parents, and families to a place of healing. “Counseling is a means of common grace,” she says and through counseling, she helps kids recognize body symptoms of anxiety and gradually work down from discomforts and helps individuals work through sitting in the discomfort and the thought trap that ‘I am not enough.' She describes anxiety as a fear of the unknown or uncertainty that can be healthy until it is prolonged or affects sleep and normal life. We learn from Page how CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) helps connect feelings, thoughts, and behaviors to teach kids how to understand what they are thinking about. We learn about how counseling helps connect to themselves and to God. Page and Mark talk about the biggest complaint that children have is their parents are not listening. Whether you are the parent or not, we would love for you to hear this message of how being vulnerable and honest is the first step.
