As much as we talk on this podcast about transforming and modernizing governments and bureaucracies, we can't ignore the role of the private sector which is often working in very embedded ways with government when it comes to all things digital. Whether it's the role of private tech firms and consultants and their complex and sometimes contested relationship with governments, or the impact of the economic, technological, and even the growing diplomatic power of big tech firms like Google, Facebook, Microsoft or Amazon, there is an increasing level of skepticism about the role that tech companies are playing, their power and influence in society, and lingering questions about if we've struck the right balance. On this episode, we talk to Dr. Alexis Wichowski, who has written a book about these issues called "The Information Trade: How Big Tech Conquers Countries, Challenges Our Rights, and Transforms Our World." In the book, she talks about the metamorphosis of big tech from simply companies with market power to entities that can mimic or act like states in their own right.Dr. Wichowski is a Professor of Practice at Columbia University, where she teaches the next generation of leaders about the intersections of technology and public service. Before that, she served as the Deputy CTO for the City of New York, Associate Commissioner for NYC's Department of Veterans' Services, and various roles within the US Department of State and the US Mission to the United Nations. In our wide-ranging conversation, held at the FWD50 conference in Ottawa last November, we spoke about the capacity of bureaucracies to drive digital transformation, the competencies needed in government to thrive in the digital era, and how governments can adapt to the growing power of big tech in society.Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/5dPbg4GogCQ?si=fKLIlVOAcTG8bEYBRelated LinksThe Information Trade: How Big Tech Conquers Countries, Challenges Our Rights, and Transforms Our WorldAlexis Wichowski's WebsiteDr. Alexis Wichowski's Research Page at Columbia UniversityChapters00:00 Introduction03:04 Alexis Wichowski10:25 Teaching the Next Generation of Leaders15:35 The Power of Big Tech on our Lives22:03 Big Tech and Diplomatic Power28:18 Technology Consultants

In Visions of a Digital Nation: Market and Monopoly in British Telecommunications (MIT Press, 2024), Jacob Ward explains why the privatization of British Telecom signaled a pivotal moment in the rise of neoliberalism, and how it was shaped by the longer development and digitalization of Britain's telecommunications infrastructure. When Margaret Thatcher sold British Telecom for £3.6 billion in 1984, it became not only, at the time, the largest stock flotation in history, but also a watershed moment in the rise of neoliberalism and deregulation. In Visions of a Digital Nation, Ward offers an incisive interdisciplinary perspective on how technology prefigured this pivot. Giving due consideration to the politicians, engineers, and managers who paved the way for this historic moment, Ward illustrates how the decision validated the privatization of public utilities and tied digital technology to free market rationales. In this examination of the national and, at times, global history of technology, Ward's approach is sweeping. Utilizing infrastructure studies, environmental history, and urban and local history, Ward explores Britain's nationalist and welfarist plans for a digital information utility and shows how these projects contested and adapted to the “market turn” under Margaret Thatcher. Ultimately, Visions of a Digital Nation compellingly argues that politicians did not impose neoliberalism top-down, but that technology, engineers, and managers shaped these politics from the bottom up. Jacob Ward is Assistant Professor in the History Department and Science, Technology and Society Studies Research Program at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University. He is coeditor of Histories of Technology, the Environment and Modern Britain. Filippo De Chirico is a PhD student in History and Politics of Energy at Roma Tre University (Italy). In today's episode, I chat with Siim Sikkut, the former CIO of the Ministry of Economic Affairs & Communications for the government of Estonia, one of the architects of that country's truly innovative e-Residency Program, and most recently, a Managing Director at Digital Nation. In 2007, a series of cyberattacks targeted websites of Estonian organizations, including Estonian parliament, banks, ministries, newspapers and broadcasters. While ultimately these attempts were unsuccessful, it was a call-to-action for nation states to take more seriously their digital infrastructure and security. It undoubtedly influenced his later work. In 2014, along with two collaborators, he presented the first real concrete proposal for e-Residency at the Estonian Development Foundation. And a program specific to foreign investors was born. Over time it was expanded to create a bureaucracy-free safe haven for entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and freelancers. And it's become a model for other nation states considering a similar value proposition. His latest venture, Digital Nation, leans heavily on those experiences; launching ‘future-ready digital societies' that overcome traditional barriers; informing digital strategy, policy and application for clients around the globe. This was a particularly fascinating discussion; an intersection of Siim's experiences in government organizations, and mine from the private enterprise. We talked at length about his professional journey, accomplishments, and how they ultimately informed his latest venture. It was such a pleasure connecting with Siim. And I hope you enjoy it. Siim SikkutSiim Sikkut led the digital government and digital policy area in the Government of Estonia for 10 years, most recently as the Government CIO from 2017 to 2022. Siim has been recognized as one of the world's TOP20 most influential people in digital government.Siim currently advises governments and leaders on digital strategy, the leadership and governance for its delivery, digital service reforms, and public sector innovation. Winner of the Media Ecology Association's first Neil Postman award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity, Dr. Douglas Rushkoff is an author, teacher, and documentarian who focuses on the ways people, cultures, and institutions create, share, and influence each other's values. He is Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY/Queens, technology and media commentator for CNN, digital literacy advocate for Codecademy.com and a lecturer on media, technology, culture and economics around the world. His new book, Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity, argues that we have failed to build the distributed economy that digital networks are capable of fostering, and instead doubled down on the industrial age mandate of growth above all. His previous best-selling books on media and popular culture have been translated to over thirty languages. They include Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now, Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age, a followup to his Frontline documentary, Digital Nation, and Life Inc, an analysis of the corporate spectacle, which was also made into a short, award-winning film. His other books include Cyberia, Media Virus, Playing the Future, Nothing Sacred: The Truth about Judaism, Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out and Coercion, winner of the Marshall Mcluhan Award for best media book. Rushkoff also wrote the acclaimed novels Ecstasy Club and Exit Strategy and graphic novel, Club Zero-G. He wrote the graphic novels Testament and A.D.D., for Vertigo. He has written and hosted three award-winning PBS Frontline documentaries – The Merchants of Cool looked at the influence of corporations on youth culture, The Persuaders, about the cluttered landscape of marketing, and new efforts to overcome consumer resistance, and Digital Nation, about life on the virtual frontier. Most recently, he made Generation Like, an exploration of teens, marketers, and social media. He has been awarded a Fullbright Scholarship, and Senior Fellowships by the Markle Foundation, the Center for Global Communications, and the International University of Japan. He served as an Advisor to the United Nations Commission on World Culture and regularly appears on TV shows from NBC Nightly News and Larry King to the Colbert Report and Bill Maher. He developed the Electronic Oracle software series for HarperCollins Interactive. In this episode, we talk about how he sees the purpose of Judaism is to help one transcend Judaism, the psycho-social peril of living in the digital now, and how the new media empires has failed to build the distributed economy that digital networks are capable of fostering, and instead doubled down on the industrial age mandate of growth above all. I got to talk to one of my heroes, and this show made it possible. Thanks, OTBR listeners. You make it all possible. Enjoy!

Welcome to episode #400 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. For the 400th episode of this podcast series, I wanted to have a serious and in-depth conversation with someone who I consider to be one of the brightest minds when it comes to digital, media and technology. That's Douglas Rushkoff. The timing could not have been more perfect, because he is back with a new documentary that recently aired on Frontline titled, Generation Like. You will be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't take the time to watch it (it's streaming for free online). Rushkoff's latest book is called, Present Shock, and he has ten-plus other best-selling books on new media and pop culture (including: Program Or Be Programmed, Life Inc., Cyberia, Media Virus, Playing the Future, Nothing Sacred: The Truth about Judaism, Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out and Coercion, winner of the Marshall Mcluhan Award for best media book). He does tons of teaching and public speaking, but also makes time to produce and write documentaries like Generation Like (along with The Merchants of Cool, The Persuaders, Digital_Nation). If that weren't enough, Douglas Rushkoff has written two series of graphic novels for Vertigo called, Testament and A.D.D.. I'm always honored that he takes the time to have these types of conversations with me, and we decided to deep dive into some of the bigger themes of this documentary, and what it means to society, as a whole. Lastly, thank you very much for listening to my podcast. I put out these shows, because having these conversations make me better (and hopefully smarter)> The fact that thousands of people - every week - enjoy them right along with me is a true privilege. I'm not one to celebrate milestones and the like, but thank you for being a part of my journey to discover. Enjoy the conversation...
