Mark Fitzpatrick came to the Islanders as a highly-touted goalie prospect and quicky established himself as a fiery NHL-caliber netminder. But right before the 1990-91 season, the 21-year-old found himself in a Los Angeles hospital with swollen hands and arms, and feet the size of footballs. Even when doctors were able to name his ailment as a rare blood disease called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome or EMS, Fitzpatrick's frightening and frustrating ordeal to reclaim his playing career was just beginning. After treatments and stops and starts on the ice, Fitzpatrick was able to play 30 games for an Islanders team with slim playoff hopes in 1992. He became the Islanders' second ever recipient of the Masterton Trophy for dedication to hockey, but more importantly, became a beacon of hope to others suffering from EMS all across the world. While Fitzpatrick was battling for his life and career, the Islanders of this time were an absolute trainwreck. Their scorers couldn't score, their defense wasn't consistent, their owner was an absentee cheapskate and their best player and only star wanted to be traded. Other than that, everything was great! It was all a far cry from where the team had been a decade earlier and a small taste of where things would go. And, yes, the use of Georges Bizet's “Habanera” aria as background music at times is an homage to Michael Richie's 1976 classic The Bad News Bears and a way to lighten the mood a little. Hearing it still makes me chuckle and picture a field of foul-mouthed kids who can't play baseball. That seems like an apt comparison to the early 1990's Islanders. On Tuesday's show: Election Day has arrived across the nation as voters head to the polls to cast their ballots in local, statewide, and Congressional races, and to make some decisions on local referenda. We visit some different polling places in the Houston area. Also this hour: Every election, pollsters try to predict how people will vote. But can anyone really do that? And what factors have made polls less reliable recently? Then, we learn about efforts to reduce homelessness among young people. And now that the baseball season is done (Congrats Astros!), some Houston sports fans might shift their attention to the Rockets, who are still rebuilding. We revisit our 2018 conversation with Rockets beat writer Jonathan Feigen about his book 100 Things Rockets Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die.

As one of the first voices of the University of Kentucky men's basketball program, Claude Sullivan (1924–1967) became a nationally known sportscasting pioneer. His career followed Kentucky's rise to prominence as he announced the first four NCAA championship titles under Coach Adolph Rupp and covered scrimmages during the canceled 1952–1953 season following the NCAA sanctions scandal. Sullivan also revolutionized the coverage of the UK football program with the introduction of a coach's show with Bear Bryant―a national first that gained significant attention and later became a staple at other institutions. Sullivan's reputation in Kentucky eventually propelled him to Cincinnati, where he became the voice of the Reds, and even to the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome. His success was tragically cut short when he passed away from throat cancer at forty-two. In Voice of the Wildcats: Claude Sullivan and the Rise of Modern Sportscasting, Claude's son Alan, along with Joe Cox, offers an engaging and heartfelt look at the sportscaster's life and the context in which he built his career. Featuring dozens of interviews and correspondence with sports legends, including Wallace "Wah Wah" Jones, Babe Parilli, Cliff Hagan, Ralph Hacker, Jim Host, Billy Reed, Adolph Rupp, and Cawood Ledford, this engaging biography showcases the life and work of a beloved broadcast talent and documents the rise of sports radio during the twentieth century. About the Author Alan Sullivan is the son of Claude Sullivan and began working in the family broadcasting business, Sullivan Enterprises, at age eleven, assisting with the production of Kentucky basketball and football games. He managed the restoration of the Claude Sullivan Collection at the UK Archives and is a UK Fellow and former member of the UK Library National Advisory Board. Joe Cox is an attorney and is the author or coauthor of ten books, including 100 Things Wildcats Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Later, they welcome Staple to ask about how the Islanders have fared in their first 10 games and about his book, which covers the full gamut of the franchise's ups and downs in easily digestible bites. They ask what facts surprised him, who he able to speak to and how the project came about at just the right time. There was a lot for Jason and I to talk about, having similar upbringings in the New York City area, but also because we got very emotional during this closing night at the Garden for very different reasons. As we discuss in today’s episode, Jason’s book, which he co-authored with Andy Smith, is an extensive FAQ about Phish, giving bite-size nuggets of information about the band and the Phish culture, acting as an extensive primer for new fans, or a reference book for seasoned fans and jaded vets.Jason and I were put in touch through a mutual fan, and when I literally read the book, I knew I would be speaking with a person who had not only an extensive knowledge of the Phish universe, but also a deep appreciation for the music and the scene. So let’s join Jason Gershuny to talk about August sixth, 2017 at Madison Square Garden.

It is episode twelve of the Dry Heat Check Podcast with Jared Cohen and Greg Esposito, also known as the Josh McCown Episode after the former Cardinals quarterback who is responsible for the Cardinals for having the number three pick rather than number one in 2004 after his Hail Mary touchdown pass to Nate Poole against the Vikings. The result of that draft brought Larry Fitzgerald to the Valley. The guys go over the week one Arizona Cardinals loss to the New England Patriots and remind you that if you have listened to this show to this point, the guys saw this coming. Plus, what is being overblown about the loss and what is a legitimate concern. Kent Somers is a quest on the show this week! The Cardinals beat writer for the Arizona Republic has a new book out called “100 Things Cardinals Fans should Know and Do Before They Die.” Somers talks about the book, Cardinals history and what to make out of the start of the season. Finally, the Airing of Grievances is back and Espo has an issue with jersey colors and reporters risking being accurate in order to be the first to report things on social media.
