It's finally here! One of our favorite times of the year where a group of critics comes together to watch and discuss various horror movies. This first episode focuses on DUMB NERDS, a category centered around scientific horror, and Devin does not disappoint with a Janet Leigh property - Night of the Lepus.

A story-based fantasy game with longform arcs and queer relationship options? It's more likely than you think. The President of the United States with a penchant for flashing his #*$% on the Senate floor, Lyndon B. Johnson is a controversial man. My friend Derek is here to elaborate on his history, context, and just what makes someone a nerd for a #*$%-waving war criminal.
Teddy & Christine are currently hyperfixated on the show/manga Hunter X Hunter. Teddy's a longtime anime fan but Christine is completely new to the medium. What's so special about this show? Why should people watch it? Tune in to find out.
Colin & Teddy need yet another outlet for expelling their thoughts on the Star Wars Prequels, with hot takes, cold takes, highly specific gripes, and conclusions taken to the furthest reaches of the galaxy.
A re-release of the live show I did awhile back over on twitch.tv/dumbnerdthing. My guest is Caleb, a big ol' fan of the online multiplayer game Overwatch, and my co-player for a huge chunk of our D&D Tomb of Annihilation campaign. Listen to him and I gush over the beauties of tabletop RPGs, and why we find them so beloved.
My guest today is Matharr, longtime UFC fan and Naruto apologist. This first episode focuses in on UFC, what it is, why people like it, and some of the best current stars to follow right now.Intro/Outro: "Show Me The Way" by Vendredihttps://vendredi.bandcamp.com/Podcast Art: Anna Martin instagram.com/amma.nartin
My dear dear brother Charles comes on to gush about his recent deep dive into Morrowind lore, and the expanded universe of the Elder Scrolls. This is high fantasy stuff. What does the world of high fantasy nerds look like? How does it relate to real world history? Can Elder Scrolls knowledge get you laid? Tune in to find out!
My guests today run a blog for those afflicted with Adult Onset One Direction Obsession, adultfansofonedirection.tumblr.com. They go over their journey of falling down the rabbit hole, culminating in a never-before-told story involving one of the band members themselves.

We tried to talk about Twin Peaks but end up talking about Star Wars toys
Today, Katie joins us to talk about Latin and Greek language, literature, culture, and arts. Producer Colin tags in to join the discussion with his extensive, extensive knowledge of the subject. Why submit themselves to years upon years of study of such a topic? Is there anything dumber and nerdier than the classics? Tune in to find out!
Time for the episode nobody asked for and in fact many begged me not to do. Producer Colin, famous for the David Bowie/Jim Henson inaugural episode of this show, joins me in the hot seat with guest host Betsy Melin! Betsy asks us just what in the heck is the deal with Star Wars and why do we sink our heads deep into the black hole that is its lore on such a consistent basis. Bear in mind this was recorded a few months ago, before Episode 9, before the Mandalorian, and before Jedi: Fallen Order.
Uhhh...you sure about this one? A whole episode about "Shane Dawson?" What does that even mean? Betsy is a nerd about this?Trust me on this one, it's a fun dive into a large & unique subculture.
My guest today is all about that Macaulay Caulkin life. Now, "Macaulay Macaulay Caulkin Caulkin" is no regular celebrity worship. Betsy is here to explain how he differs from other celebs with a genuineness and reality that you can identify with.
A self-indulgent episode! The Sonic the Hedgehog comic ran for 290 issues over 24 years, not including the multiple spin-offs. It's the comic that got me into comics, and built this insane world of multiversal events and ancient Egyptian echidnas. This time it's Ixwonkr, my guest from the Anime/Speedrunning episode, acting as the host, as I go into my experience with the comic.
Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Napoleon Dynamite. Dance is, perhaps, the oldest art form we have. What draws us to it? How does one analyze and quantify "good" dance? My guest, Kat, has been dancing her whole life and goes in depth on her experiences with dance and how it's benefited her in her life.
My friend Tobar goes into his own personal history to explain the power of one of the most classic superheroes, and how even a fictional character like Superman can be a beacon of hope to us in our darkest times.
I'm joined by my friend Tobar all the way from Colombia for a discussion of Devil May Cry, a very unique video game series about hunting devils and eating pizza. Just what the heck even are these games? Find out here! This is part 1 of the interview, tune in next week for Part 2 for a discussion about the man of steel himself!
It's all about bad movies that people love and bad games that people...are cursed to play forever. Stu Hicar, of the Statesmen podcast, is my guest to talk about why and how we love bad movies, in particular, the incredible film experience that is 1989's Teen Witch. The second topic is Assassin's Creed, a video game series that's been going about a decade and Stu has been along for the whole ride, whether he's wanted to or not. What does it mean to be a nerd about something that you know is "low quality?" Why are we nerds about these things?Stu's Podcast: https://fanlink.to/statesmenhttps://fanlink.to/statesmenIntro/Outro: "Show Me The Way" by VendrediSoundcloud- https://soundcloud.com/vendrediduo/14-vendredi-show-me-the-waySpotify- https://open.spotify.com/artist/728y8xDi9WMeYqKeuYgDF0Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/vendrediduo/
This week's episode is a big three parter. It's all about the small, oft-overlooked corners in this episode. Moon Knight is in his own corner of the Marvel Universe, bass guitars are the hidden backbone of any band, and the old Spider-man movies are instant classics now lost in the sea of recent cinematic universes. Just because you beat a game, doesn't mean you're done with it. My friend Spencer aka Ixwonkr is a big fan of the Resident Evil video games, and spent a good chunk of time learning how one can beat the first game as fast as humanly possible. This took practice, sweat, and YouTube tutorials but he's top 10 in the world now. This episode I'm chatting with John Garrity about professional wrestling and Kingdom Hearts. Both these topics involve long-form storytelling with overly-complicated plots and impressive technical skill. John is someone who knows how to see the talent and heart behind convoluted writing and flashy cliche effects, and to hear him talk about that appreciation is really interesting.Intro/Outro: "Show Me The Way" by VendrediSoundcloud- https://soundcloud.com/vendrediduo/14-vendredi-show-me-the-waySpotify- https://open.spotify.com/artist/728y8xDi9WMeYqKeuYgDF0Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/vendrediduo/
In a very special episode of Dumb Nerd Thing, I speak with my mom, Anne Gearhart. She talks about one of her favorite artists, Lucinda Williams. Lucinda Williams is a folk/country star that puts a lot of poetry and emotion into her lyrics and it's a type of connection with an artist that a lot of us can relate to. Anne has also worked as a pediatrician for her entire adult life, and has a passion for child care, literacy, and their health.Intro/Outro: "Show Me The Way" by VendrediSoundcloud- https://soundcloud.com/vendrediduo/14-vendredi-show-me-the-waySpotify- https://open.spotify.com/artist/728y8xDi9WMeYqKeuYgDF0Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/vendrediduo/
In the second episode, I interview Jack, a major music nerd and closet Skyrim nerd. We talk about the 2011 fantasy video game and what it shares in common with Norwegian Black Metal. They bonded over performing improv and puppetry together. They now work together on the YouTube channel, Socratica Kids, that makes science videos for kids using puppets and animation. Michael has been drawing since he was a kid and now does animation. He goes into great detail about how he was drawn to cartoons as a kid and continued to be while other kids we're getting into the "Backstreet Boys", to learning software like Toon Boom to become an animator. He also knows a lot about Disney, their animation department and how many animation companies like Pixar have exploded over the years to make great films we adore like “Toy Story” and more. Enjoy! How many of us are lucky to have a bar we frequent where everybody knows our name? How about for 11 seasons? Hilarious comedian and writer Matt Manser joins host Cassi Jerkins to talk about the hit TV show “Cheers”! Matt watched the show as a kid learning many adult issues from it. Matt and Cassi get into the different characters that created such a dynamic ensemble which lead to the popular spin off show, “Fraiser”. Cassi learns that Frasier was originally written for one of her favorite actors of all time, John Lithgow, but Lithgow turned it down giving Kelsey Grammer the most prominent role of his acting career. (Honorable mention to Sideshow Bob). Cassi reflects upon John Lithgow’s career and her love for him a bit too long and Matt has to reel her back in. Matt tells Cassi about some of his favorite Cheers episodes which involve Cliff Clavin trying to write a joke for Johnny Carson and another where he almost wins “Jeopardy”. So pour yourself a beer and enjoy this week’s Dumb Nerds ep all about “Cheers”! This episode is dedicated to the late Jay Thomas, Carla's hockey playing boyfriend who got written off the show because Jay talked ill of Rhea Perlman on a radio show. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Today on Dumb Nerds we have on the super hilarious and talented Dhruv Singh (I'm Too Effin’ High, UCB) to talk about one of his heroes, Muhammad Ali. Dhruv talks about why Muhammad was so great and admirable in and out of the boxing ring, how Muhammad stood up for black rights and as a proud Muslim in the 1950s and 1960s when hardly, if any celebrity would. Muhammad Ali wasn't afraid to be himself and be unpopular in a predominant white American society. Today he is popularly looked up to as a hero. Dhurv and Cassi talk about the switch from hated man to a cherished and beloved American icon. They also get into some of Muhammad’s most famous fights like “Rumble in the Jungle” where 32 year old Muhammad Ali took on 25 year old George Foreman, and ended it in the eighth round in Kinshasa, Zaire. There was also “Thrilla in Manilla”, the 1975 fight for the heavyweight championship of the world against Joe Frazier at the Philippine Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines. They also discuss Muhammad's amazing poetic trash talking that influenced rap music today. Even if you boxing isn’t for you, this is an episode you won’t want to miss! Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
Today’s Dumb Nerds’ guest is Mark David Christenson (“I Will Watch Anything Once” Podcast) and he comes on to talk about his love for the comic book series, “Saga”. “Saga” was created and written by Brian K Vaughan and the awesome artwork is done by Fiona Staples. Instead of going into spoilers and the full story of “Saga”, Dave encourages listeners to go out there and pick up a copy at their local comic book store! Cassi and Dave talk about the beginning of the series, some of the characters, some controversy in the artwork like in Issue #12 and the cover of the very first “Saga”issue. They also talk about the distribution company Image and how it split from Marvel in 1992. Dave goes into a rant on why he doesn’t buy DC and Marvel comics because of their ad placement. For example, you’re getting into your comic about Superman or Robin and then Nick Lachey from 98 Degrees appears to sell you a Twix bar! Not cool. They talk the comic book series “Preacher” and compare the great use of narration in “Saga” to the not so great use of narration in the movie “Road to Perdition”. Dave and Cassi also get into writing, acting and how to give it your all by using advice from such mentors as Stephen King and Bob Odenkirk. They also talk about establishing great partnerships for collaboration and when to do a project solo. Give it a listen and you may find yourself going to your nearest comic book store to pick up “Saga”, and then sitting in front of your computer to begin a writing project of your own. Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
Today’s guest Clark Canez (LA Improviser- Power Lunch, Chaz Dean, Gosh Guys, Hemp-ire Strikes Back) and Cassi get deep into Greek Mythology! Clark proves his Dumb Nerd worthiness by knowing so much about Greek Mythology. Seriously. He schools Cassi with stories of: Chaos; the first leaders of the Universe The Titans; the castrating, baby eating King Cronus; the Cronus killing and wife cheating Zeus; Zeus’ wife and sister Hera; Hercules, the son Zeus had out of wedlock but made up his infidelity by naming Hercules after his wife, Hera; Zeus and Hera’s one eyed son Cyclops; God of Sea Poseidon; Leader of the Underworld Hades; the unwilling Queen of the Underworld Persephone and her mother, Goddess of Agriculture and winter inducing, Demeter; Rockstar Orpheus and the tragic fate of his wife Eurydice; Apollo and the cursed false prophet Cassandra; Flying-too-close-to-the-sun Icarus; Rolling-a-boulder-uphill Sisyphus; and Prometheus, the god who gave fire back to mortals and was punished by being chained to a mountain and eaten by birds for eternity. It’s fun, dark stuff! Clark and Cassi also get into the history of Greek storytelling with Homer, “The Odyssey”, the origin and function of myth and the importance of the Olympics and competition between city-states. (Why can’t sports in America be like that today?) They also get into the movie and graphic novel “300”, the differences and similarities of religions especially between Christianity and Greek Mythology, the Golden Rule, the TV shows “The Crown” and “The Tudors”, Christopher Reeves, Christopher Robin and historian, Allan Lichtman, who predicted that Donald Trump would win the presidency using his system the “13 Keys”. They also find out they both lived in Anaheim for a bit. Shout out to the Anaheim Angels and the Linbrook Bowling Alley! They also reveal Clark’s biggest secret of all: his name is not really Clark. Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
This is the first episode of Dumb Nerds! Host, Cassi Jerkins, invites a comedian onto the show to talk about a smart topic they wish they knew more about! Today, her guest is Gerald Grissette (Arcady Currency, CBS Diversity Showcase) and they talk about how to buy a house. Both Gerald and Cassi are too poor to buy a house and wouldn’t know what to do if they had the money to buy a house. They go through each step one would have to take in order to purchase a home. Appraisals, Open Houses, Escrow- the whole shebang! They also talk about their dream homes and more importantly, their dream of just marrying someone who has already inherited a house so they can avoid the headache of buying a house.
