First released: 25 Aug 2023 | To join New Models, find us via patreon.com/newmodels & newmodels.substack.com Three members of the Collapsology / Crude Futures group — Richard Hames (co-author of The Rise of Ecofascism, Polity, 2022), Washington-state based writer Beau-Caprice Vetch, and UK-based producer/writer/DJ Jake Colvin (NKC) — discuss the idea of collapse, its historical role in consolidating power, its geopolitical vs. biopolitical registers, its relationship to spirituality, and frameworks for approaching adaptation to the worlds revealed in its wake. The occasion for this conversation is the publication of a zine and card game that the Crude Futures group — which started in the New Models Discord server and also includes members Mina Miller, Jack Tarpey, phm, Matīss Groskaufmanis, Jon Benjamin Talleräs, Cat MacGregor, T.M. Wilson, and Marcelino Llano — created over the past two years and released this July. Printing of the zine and card game was made possible through proceeds from the NM Codex Y2K20, and initial proceeds from the Crude Futures sales will go toward production of whatever NM-sphere initiative emerges next. The zine and card game are available at https://shop.newmodels.io as well as select bookshops in London and Berlin. There's no question that the biosphere is in crisis right now thanks to human-driven global warming, our hostile takeover of most of Earth's land area, and our pollution and overfishing of the seas. Slowing down—never mind outright stopping—the collapse of the Earth's ecosystems and the mass extinction currently gaining pace calls for aggressively protecting the environment, or possibly even giving half of the Earth's land surface back to nature in a process known as rewilding. But how will we manage to share the Earth with the rest of the biosphere when history shows that we're pretty terrible at sharing it with each other, with some states even going so far as to have used the preservation of wilderness as a tool of genocide and white supremacy? There are still those who would use environmental protection as an excuse to block immigrants, reject refugees, and expel “undesirable” people from the land. What will it take to value human and non-human life and the land all equally, without using one as an excuse to persecute the other?Getting urgently-needed environmental protection and rewilding right requires facing the evils that have been historically committed in the name of conservation, so that we don't repeat those grave mistakes, even with the best of intentions. As solarpunks, we need to learn from the past in order to shape futures that are intentionally better than our pasts and presents. And that's a wrap for season 2! Season 3 will be coming along in the last week of June for Patreon supporters, and to the public in the first week of July. The investigation has reached the Hungerplan of the NSDAP-Reichsministers of Agriculture, Herbert Backe and Richard Walther Darré. In due manner we will see how the 20th century's largest man made famine came about and how it continues to shape our contemporary time. How did Backe outmanoeuvre his mentor to conquer the throne of evil? What really happened in the central black earth region, the largest magnetic anomaly on Earth known as Kursk? And why are the warmongers there today again? We go looking for the origins of the "Drive to the East" narrative, Blood and Soil and the mythology of the black on white cross of the Teutons. I'll read the addresses to the nation by Fichte and attack it with satirical poetry from Marx's third cousin Heinrich Heine. This and much more awaits you if you will join me in the very emotional and mind altering fourth instalment of The Return Of The Repressed Ecofascism series. Today we will begin a new journey through the past. A journey that will cover and overlap the whole history that has been our subject matter in the Bio Peace and Warfare series. A parallel narration which will take the form of a slightly more theoretical investigation with the new title Ecofascism. My assumption is that only highlighting examples and names we will not shock anybody familiar with the very familiar topic of fascism. We need to understand more thoroughly how it as an ideology understands nature and its ecology. We also need to understand how this was not only a German but is a common joint project by the entire developing world, a global fact that has been thoroughly obscured by the singling out of a particular man of a particular party in a particular country at a particular time. In this extended introduction to what was once called not Ecofascism but “The New Biology” we will learn the names of some of the involved economical foundations, corporations and important actors, as well as the material and theoretical reasons for their ideology. A new hegemonic historical block of primarily England, America and Germany which together as a single unit if not bought, at least began to lease the scientific community of human development itself. I will read from the magic mountain of Thomas Mann to set the mode of the early 20th century. Those vibes will then be given structural depth as we make use of theorists such as Foucault and his biopower, Gramsci and his recruitment of intellectuals as well as contemporary dialectical geneticists, evolutionary biologists, mathematicians and physicists etc to introduce a neglected often unheard critique of the hegemony of the aforementioned historical block. If I did my work correctly and thoroughly enough, you will already by the end of this introduction start to question things like genetic reductionism, the protein paradigm, IQ heritability, the DNA doctrine and perhaps the E-word itself…that is evolution. These dents in the body armour of the sane modern subject will not be put their by a religious lance so that you can join me as reborn subjects in my new Pentecostal end-time cult. They are intended to bring about a grasp of the causes of the overdetermined trajectory of what has poetically been called the Second Silent Spring and more scientifically The Sixth Extinction Event . The time has come to lay to rest statements such as “I cant believe that they are doing this” or “I can't understand why they are doing this”. We will "believe" but most importantly we will come to understand why. In so doing as a bonus we will also look at the famous intellectuals who uphold this elite narrative of social control today on social media under the psyop-auspices of being ambassadors for a “forbidden knowledge” such as Sam Harris, Charles Murray and Jordan Peterson etc. In short we will hopefully come to understand how we were all forced to take for granted that all the mechanisms of life and the control of that life, were to be found at a submicroscopic level. A place not of bacteria but the molecular gene, where of course at a depth of PPM to PPB of a centimeter, very few can afford the eye necessary to look for the truth. An historical documentable move by the ruling classes to successfully bar the gates to the very top of the very cool rooms of the pyramid of empirical observation. Imposed on all but a selected few who also just happens to be not scientists but the world's richest patrons. Issues around the environment, ecology and climate change don't necessarily underpin much of the far right's activities around the globe these days. But is this going to be the case in the future? Bellingcat's Michael Colborne spoke with Sam Moore and Alex Roberts, the authors of ‘The Rise of Ecofascism: Climate Change and the Far Right.' (Polity, 2022), to understand how the far right understands and relates to nature and the environment, and what we can expect from the far right in the future amidst continued environmental degradation and the rising impacts of climate change.

CW: xenophobia, racism and far-right violence In mid-May, the world was shocked when an armed man entered a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and opened fire on ordinary shoppers. It soon became clear that the shooting was a white-supremisist terrorist attack. The shooter cited talking points from a new sector of the far-right to justify his actions: this ideology is called ecofascism. Jack spoke to author and activist Byron Clarke, an expert on the far-right and disinformation, to find out what ecofascism is and why we should be concerned about it.

This week, Grace talks to Sam Moore, co-author with Alex Roberts of The Rise of Ecofascism: Climate Change and the Far Right. Sam and Alex host their own podcast, 12 Rules for WHAT, which focuses on the rise of the far right. They discuss how far-right politicians are weaponizing the climate crisis to build support for an extremist, exclusionary politics based on "batteries, bombs, and borders," how this links to a longer history of right-wing environmentalism, and how the left should respond.A World to Win is a podcast from Grace Blakeley and Tribune bringing you a weekly dose of socialist news, theory, and action with guests from around the world. In this ClimateGenn episode, I am speaking to authors, podcasters, and activists, Sam Moore and Alex Roberts whose recently published book, The Rise Of Ecofascism, explores the characteristics of past, present, and potentially future ‘ecofascism'. The risks posed to society from extreme politics on the right and the left has been rising in recent years. Even in the last week or so, a cache of information was leaked via the Anonymous hacking group linking Putin's regime to the financing of far right-wing groups across Europe. More evidence of the rise in far-right and fascist groups is seen in places like the UK, France, Italy, or Hungary, where political ground can become an objective. Sam and Alex's work aims to be a pragmatic guide to identify these tendencies and emerging ideas in order to be able to stop them from rising into dominant movements, which as they evidence in the book, never deliver on the grand promises they make. They also provide a long history of how the far-right have developed relationships to nature that recur in history and are also echoed today in political narratives around climate denialism and delays in ridding ourselves of the fossil fuel era that is destroying the world as we know it. Thank you for listening to the ClimateGenn series. In the next episode I am speaking with Dr Paul Behrens on the risks of food system shocks arising from the Ukraine crisis and how this is a signal of how vulnerable our overall food system is in a worsening climate and ecological crisis. The gravity of climate change and the environmental emergency demands not just attention but concerted action. But what form will that action take? Will states exercise more authority to impose solutions without democratic process? Will corporations seize opportunities to rebuild devastated communities, privatizing land and infrastructure in the process? Will political movements tap climate fears to promote exclusionary immigration policies and enact violent attacks on scapegoats? Historically and today, ecological crisis has produced numerous such cases. In this panel discussion, Katia R. Avilés Vázquez (Institute for Research and Action in Agroecology), Rajani Bhatia (SUNY Albany) & John Aloysius Zinda (Cornell University) explore examples from China, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. that open a wider discussion of the threats to, and continued possibilities for, democratic action on climate change. Moderated by Sigrid Schmalzer (UMass Amherst). The Feinberg Family Distinguished Lecture Series is made possible thanks to the generosity of UMass Amherst history department alumnus Kenneth R. Feinberg '67 and associates. The series is co-sponsored by more than 3 dozen university and community organizations. Douglas Rushkoff is a prolific author, documentarian, and podcaster with a delightful sense of humor. He joins the gang in Crazy Town to ponder paradoxical questions such as: Why would homes on Miami Beach be selling for millions of dollars if that property were really going to be underwater in a decade? Why would so much of the world be business-as-usual if climate change were real? Why is the stock market going up during a global plague? Coping in a world that no longer makes sense requires finding community in the real world and getting comfortable with uncertainty and cognitive dissonance. In this new episode of Spoken Earth, Adam Weymouth speaks with Professor Peter Staudenmaier, about the historical overlap between environmentalism and far right thought, and the growing trends of ecofascism today. Staudenmaier is a professor of modern German history at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his work focuses on Nazism and Fascism, the history of racial thought, and the political history of environmentalism. Staudenmaier has been an active participant in the anarchist movement, the green movement, and the cooperative movement in the United States and Germany for over two decades. In 1995, he co-authored the book Ecofascism: Lessons from the German Experience, a work that grew out of what he saw as a lack of awareness of the history of environmentalism amongst his fellow activists. In it, he documented how Nazism frequently intersected with ecological thought in everything from organic farming through to the mantra of ‘Blood and Soil.’ But far from being confined to history, the resurgent far right is again adopting its own creed of environmentalism, and some of it is bleeding over into more mainstream views. We discuss the history, and these new worrying trends.
Where did eco-fascicm originate? Was it in the third reich or only later? And whom can we even call an eco-fascist? Is it a neo-nazi that wants to conserve nature or an ecologist that propagates anti-humanist narratives such as overpopulation or social darwinism? What other narratives and tactics are contemporary eco-fascists using in their attempts to infiltrate mainstream ecology and what can we do about it? We will try to answer these questions together with our guests Balša Lubarda, an environmental sociologist, and Hilary Moore, a political educator focused on the topics of anti-racism and climate change. Hello there, friends. We're back with another we recorded a couple of months ago, right when COVID was starting to get all hot and heavy with the lung of our nation. You might have noticed that the world was in pretty bad shape even before our favorite pandemic took center-stage. The globe is getting hotter. Hurricanes are rocking shores all over the world. California is burning away I type this out. What is there to be done? Perhaps massive regulations on corporations and heavy taxes on the world's wealthiest elite would be a good start.Just kidding.Even if we don't have the any answers (besides massive regulations and heavy taxes), some have taken on the burden of the world on their shoulders, with some pretty nasty methods and results. We're talking Ecofascism and the kooky bunch of characters (mostly extreme bigots and racists) that operate in that space. In this first part, we go over the history of Ecofascism, and what it has paved the way for, today. Join us, won't you?
