Today, almost half of the population has high-interest credit card debt, according to Federal Reserve data. On top of this, two-thirds of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. For so many, feeling financially lost and unable to dig out of this hole is all too common because managing money and making smart financial decisions was never part of the conversation. If what our culture most urgently needs is for a critical mass of us to grow into adults and then elders, how can we help our young people to step beyond the artificial boundaries of our old, rigid system into a world where they are fully connected to all parts of themselves, each other and the web of life. How, in effect, can we create an educational system that is fit for purpose in the emerging century? In this podcast, I joined with Tim Logan, host of the Future Learning Design podcast, educator, part of the team at Good Impact Labs and co-leader of the International Baccalaureate's 'Festival of Hope'.   Tim is a highly experienced school leader, management consultant, coach, educator and researcher, has held previous pedagogical and well-being senior leadership positions in a variety of international settings and is proud to have consistently helped to build innovative, outstanding schools, supportive relationships and powerful educational visions.  He says, 'The important question for now is, can we intentionally create more spaces in our schools that provide a qualitatively different kind of 'educational' experience?  Transformational shifts are happening in educational and organisational cultures around the world right now. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to play a role in this.'I was on the Future Learning Design podcast just before the dark nights of winter with Ginie Servant-Miklos, Raïsa Mirza and Will Richardson and his podcast has become one of my essential listens of the week and had been planning to invite Tim here to talk about the transformational shifts happening in education and how they can help us lay the foundations for a world we'd be proud to leave behind.  We were planning something for later in the year but we had a cancellation and he had a tech misfire and we both  needed something fast to get the schedules back on track, so here we are with a joint conversation—one of those that ranges wide over the landscape of culture and learning and the 'citadel mind' and our history of optimising for everything and how we could, instead, begin to expand into a more porous mindset and look for resonance and help young people to become part of the emerging transformation of the entire web of life.  Tim on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/teblogan/Tim's podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/future-learning-design-podcast/id1536832802Good Impact Labs https://www.goodimpactlabs.com/aboutNick Mulvey Live from COP26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-GBl6DeA50&t=1273sConcerned Bird Substack https://theconcernedbird.substack.com/p/elon-musks-and-xs-role-in-2024-electionFestival of Hope https://ibo.org/festival-of-hope/ Systems Transformation Pathway at UWC Atlantic College: https://www.uwcatlantic.org/learning/academic/systems-transformation-pathwayGreen School: https://www.greenschool.org/School of Humanity: https://sofhumanity.com/

Today, Steve is speaking about security leadership with executive coach and CEO and Founder of Serenity in Leadership Thom Dennis. Thom brings his expertise in psychology to bear in their discussion of the role of leaders in culture change, how to let go and trust your workforce, and practical tips for embracing the challenges leaders face day to day. Key Takeaways: 1. Fast-paced change and unease about people being away from work for extended periods of time are impacting leadership development. 2. Trust and clarity are key to successful remote work, letting go of control and setting clear objectives. 3. Incorporating breaks into work schedules serves to avoid burnout and increase productivity. 4. Thom Dennis predicts a shift in leadership thinking, where society's demands will be prioritized over corporate standards. Tune in to hear more about: 1. Trust, fear, and delegation in leadership (3:56) 2. Creating space for focus, trust, and organizational leadership evolution (11:29) 3. Leadership evolution, prioritizing people over analysis, and fostering trust and community in organizations (17:22) Standout Quotes: 1. Let people go. Tell them what you want them to achieve, tell them what the objectives are, and then let them get on with it. There's this sort of sense of fear that one isn't going to be in control. So I think people have got to learn to trust, and to be very clear about what it is that they're looking for. And then letting go. And I think often, you will get a far better result from that. Above anything else, I think, in forcing the briefer to be absolutely clear about what they want to achieve, that can save an awful lot of time and money in and of itself. -Thom Dennis 2. Some people who write and have incredibly busy jobs, they're up at five o'clock, or even four o'clock, and they're writing for an hour, and then they go to the gym, and then they … and so on. Whatever your routine is. But if they're doing that, they're probably in bed at eight o'clock in the evening. So look, a part of this is self discipline, isn't it? It's deciding on your routine, and then doing whatever it is that you can do to keep yourself to it. -Thom Dennis 3. I think we need to create quiet spaces for ourselves so that we can actually hear our inner knowing. They say that there's more signals that go from the heart to the brain than the other way around. And they've identified that there are brain type cells in the heart, and also in the gut. So all these things people have been talking about oh, well, I just go by my gut feelings, well, that's not as silly as it sounds. And I think that leaders of the future have got to become just a little bit less — not totally, but a little bit less cerebral, and more in touch with their inner knowing. — Thom Dennis Mentioned in this episode: ISF Analyst Insight Podcast Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.

Navigating NCUA's Liquidity Landscape: Insights and StrategiesIn this episode of 'With Flying Colors', hosted by Mark Treichel and featuring Todd Miller, the discussion centers around the NCUA's recent liquidity webinar. Mark and Todd share their insights into the NCUA's perspective on liquidity management, referencing three key source documents: the 2010 interagency policy statement on funding and liquidity risk management, NCUA Letter CU10 guidance issued by NCUA in 2013 on compliance with NCUA regulations, and a 2023 addendum on the importance of contingency funding plans. Todd Miller, with extensive experience at NCUA, analyzes the webinar's content, suggesting it primarily served as a refresher on previous guidance and may have offered more to smaller credit unions. They touch on the importance of cash flow statements, the evolution of credit unions' deposit base since the last financial crisis, and strategies credit unions are employing to manage liquidity pressures effectively. The episode also addresses the variance in NCUA examiners' expectations and the ongoing adjustments credit unions are making in response to rising interest rates. They conclude that proactive liquidity management and adapting to changing rate environments are crucial for credit unions to thrive.00:00 Maximize Your Success with NCUA: Insider Tips and Sponsorship00:35 Introduction to the Episode: NCUA's Liquidity Webinar Recap03:08 Deep Dive into NCUA's Liquidity Webinar: Key Takeaways and Analysis05:56 Exploring the Impact of Historical and Current Liquidity Trends08:37 The Role of Non-Member Deposits and Pricing in Liquidity Management16:24 Forward-Looking Liquidity Management: Strategies and Examiner Variability32:02 Concluding Thoughts: Adjusting to Market Conditions and Future Outlook35:09 Final Remarks and Invitation for Future Learning

The development of skills and capabilities to work with innovation is becoming essential — they are no longer the province of specialists but something we all need to acquire and practice.  In an earlier podcast we looked at the changing landscape for learning about innovation and entrepreneurship., drawing on the VISION project,  a major European study looking at this question.  At its heart is a vision of how things might develop over the next ten years and it poses challenges around what we might start doing now to secure a positive future. But whilst we have an idea of what's up ahead the reality is that the future isn't predetermined.  It's a 'design space' within which different versions of the future are argued out and shape - a  bit like stretching and shaping dough before we bake it.So in this podcast we'll listen in on a debate around the different ways in which the future of learning about innovation and entrepreneurship will be shaped - and look at some of the barriers we might need to overcome to get there.

Marcus Martins never planned to serve a mission, to be sealed in the temple, or to serve as a bishop. These things would require him to receive the priesthood, and there was a restriction in place that precluded him from doing so. But Martins’s life changed forever on June 8, 1978, when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy male members ages 12 and older. Since that day, Martins has served not only as a missionary, but as a bishop, a temple officiator, a Book of Mormon translator, and a mission president. On this week's episode, Martins explains how he developed a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ even before 1978 and why he has never looked back in the nearly 50 years since he joined the Church. “I’m very optimistic about the future and the fact that because of the testimony of Jesus Christ, we will come eventually to a point, even before the millennium, in which this will be for most people a thing of the past because, since we are always receiving new converts, we will always have to be revisiting these lessons but it won’t hurt as much." Whether it’s the on-air financial host pumping & dumping stocks to his viewers, the policymaker forecasting unemployment figures and growth rates, or the Silicon Valley executive predicting autonomous fleets of vehicles, telepathy, and jobs on mars, all within a decade, it is our discomfort with uncertainty and simultaneous craving for reassurance that fuels so many of the commercial and political operations of daily life. And yet, history is an incomplete data set. We know this because the future is full of things that have never been here before. So, if we want to successfully confront the unknown challenges to come, we need to begin by acknowledging that we cannot plan for them. Spring Break Prepping (0:00:00) Spring Break is just around the corner! As the weather warms up, we feel that excitement of summer grow closer and closer, especially when we get to start planning our spring breaks. Many of you may have been planning your trips for a while, but perhaps a lot of you are also in need of some spring break tips. Today for Lisa's Adventure Club, we are bringing you a spring break guide for your family. Here to help us with this guide is Molly Fergus, a writer for Trip Savvy and experienced traveler.   Why Teenagers Cheat in School (0:14:47) We've all heard the phrase “everybody cheats” before. In a survey of twenty-four thousand high school students, 64% admitted to cheating on a test, with 31% more admitting to cheating on some other kind of assignment. This bring us to a whopping 95% of teenagers who openly admitted that they'd cheated before. Why on earth does this happen? How can we help our kids stand up to this disturbing trend? We've invited Dr. Carl Pickhardt onto the show today to explain cheating to us. Dr. Pickhardt is an educational psychologist and writer based in Austin, Texas.   Virtual Workplaces (0:32:47) One of the top skills required for functioning work teams, businesses, and employees is the ability to communicate. We are now living in a digital world where communication is increasingly more accessible, and we are connecting people around the world. One way we are doing that is through virtual workplaces. But undoubtedly there are some challenges that come with building a team that has remote employees and virtual spaces. Coworkers can live in different cities or even states, and this can create some barriers. To help understand the challenges as well as the benefits of a virtual workplace is Dr. Julie Wilson, founder of the Institute for Future Learning and instructor at Harvard.   Creativity and Your Health (0:50:36) We all have different ways of handling stress. Some of us vigorously clean our homes. Others go for a run. And some people stress-eat cupcakes. But have you ever considered using a creative outlet to de-stress? It might sound crazy that taking on another project could be the key to helping you relax, but taking time to focus on activities like art, music, or photography could actually help you better manage your stress and improve your mental health. Here to tell us more about the connection between creativity and health is art therapist Cathy Malchiodi.  Mini Book Club: Great March Reads (1:05:06) Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, talks with Lisa and Richie about the best books to read this month.   Marvelous Mid-Life (1:13:19) Author, speaker, and friend of the show Ganel-lyn Condie talks with Lisa and Richie about what we can do to energize our lives once we get to mid-life.   Memorializing Pets (1:28:41) While our precious pets will live on forever in our hearts, there will come a day when they will eventually pass on. As hard as it may be to think about, commemoration provides the kind of closure that we all need in those situations. Finding ways to celebrate our beloved pets even after they've died will help us to keep them with us always. Gay Balliet-Perkins is the author of “The Celebrated Pet: How Americans Memorialize Their Animal Friends” .We're talking with her about the different ways we can remember our pets after they leave us.

Dr. Generals has been running the Community College of Philadelphia for five years now. It is the largest institution of higher learning in the city. We gathered in his office in the historic Mint Building (which was the home of the Third Philadelphia Mint) to brainstorm about: why college continues to be so expensive and outpace inflation (2:45), if the wide availability of college loans has anything to do with the inflationary price (4:40), how this generation of student is starting to seek more value in education (6:00), a real example of comparing the cost of one year at Drexel University to an associate's degree at CCoP (6:45), if the "bumper sticker" mentality drives parents to choose their child's school (8:37), why CCoP and other community colleges should be free (10:09), how education is the latest industry to be disrupted by technology (12:45), the importance of writing as a skill (16:50), why the next stage of disruption in education will be virtual reality and maybe even Tupac Shakur (17:50), if we are forcing ourselves to entertain the current student generation too much (19:40), the dangers of wasting your first two years in college (21:00), snowplow parenting (22:25), are teachers giving out too many A's (27:05), how society should change the way it pays for public schools (28:05), the greatest skill needed to succeed (31:10), if we are starting to weigh analytics too much in any industry (33:20), if Ivy League schools should eliminate the legacy admission (35:20), the story of Temple University's first Rhodes Scholar, Hazim Hardeman (37:45), How to motivate people to do something they may not necessarily want to do (39:30), if it truly is lonely at the top and how to deal with that as a leader (41:50) and the story of Dr. Generals' favorite teacher(s) (44:00). Recorded on September 12, 2019 in the President's Office, Mint Building at the Community College of Philadelphia.

LA 005: How taking a break improves future learning and leadership

All will be well in the morning My mum would often tell me "all will be well in the morning." For her, it was just experience and age-old wisdom. All will be well in the morning And things always were better in the morning. Somehow, all the clutter and stress and worry, while, not gone altogether, was, at least more manageable. As I slept, my brain was free to sort through the problem, process it entirely and put it in a suitable place close to a similar experience in memory. I had learned how to resolve whatever the issue was. More often than not, it didn't even need addressing anyway. How taking a break improves future learning It's akin to my mum's advice to "sleep on the problem" so that your memories can be reprocessed, consolidate and shaped for better (faster) retrieval. Taking a learning break gives your brain time and space to reprocess. A paper published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest has evaluated ten techniques for improving learning, ranging from mnemonics to highlighting and shows that taking a break in learning (or 'Distributed Practice' to give a scientific title) is more effective thanany of the other nine techniques usually believed to be better. And now there's compelling new evidence from the University of Texas at Austin, recently published in the National Academy of Sciences: that supports the idea that study breaks improve later learning. When we take a break from learning, our brain can process all the information.  But how much is the right amount for studying and how long for a break? I've been researching this for some time now and unsurprisingly; the results are inconclusive. However, there does appear to be a general reduction in the active learning time for younger people. Typically, I have found that Baby Boomers study well and learn well over a 25 minute period of almost continuous study. That is; they needed a learning consolidation break at 25 minutes. Needing a 15-minute break. Gen X'ers around 20 minutes. Needing an average 13-minute break) Gen Y drops to about 12 minutes with a 6-minute break and then: Gen iY (the iPad generation) around 4 minutes (yeap, just four minutes) with a 2-minute break. All of this in non-academic learning situations, by the way. Tested for learning retention 24 hours after the learning event and 21 days later. All of this in non-academic learning situations, by the way. Tested for learning retention 24 hours after the learning event and 21 days later. But within every group there was a range, and it would change for an individual dependent on the mode of learning. That is, was the learning in a form that they preferred (reading, video, audio, kinesthetic, etc.). Sadly (from an academic point of view) even so-called learning preferences wasn't a statistically significant factor. Our brain needs a break When we take a break from learning, our brain can process all the information. When we are learning anything, our pre-frontal cortex (PFC) is burning a lot of energy as we evaluate the information, process it and check it against working memory. Then the new information is processed, consolidated, and linked to appropriate other memories and emotions... but for this to be held in longer term memory, it appears that the PFC needs to be less active. Perhaps because the PFC is such an energy hog, and we simply need to switch our energy resources to consolidate memories (learn). So can't we just take a pill and learn better and faster? To a certain extent, we can. Glucose and oxygen - the fuel we need to burn to learn. (Caffeine can assist as well if recent research is correct.)So taking a moment, munching on candy, taking deep breaths and sipping that cup of coffee all help us learn... oh, I've just described a break So taking a moment, munching on candy, taking deep breaths and sipping that cup of coffee all help us learn... oh, I've just described a break. Better still, as my dear mum would say, "sleep on it, all will be better in the morning."
