Few developers have had as long and prolific a career as our guest, Graeme Bayless. From working on mainframes, to selling Kaypros, to playtesting Accolade's launch titles, to producing games for SSI, Sega Technical Institute, Hyperbole Studios, Dynamix, EA, Eidos, and NetherRealm Studios. In Part 3, we talk about job hunting in the games industry at the end of the 90s and his time at EA's Tiburon subsidiary working on Madden 2001 and 2002 as well as developing the NFL Street franchise. What is life like for a dev living in the crunch of annualized sports games?  How are new franchises born?  What is it like to move from studio to studio? Graeme gives us amazing insights into the life of a game dev like few others can or would. Ensemble Studios blew the world away with Age of Empires way back in 1997.  It took a different approach to the RTS formulae than Westwood or Blizzard, and was rewarded heavily for it.  Being able to advance your entire civilization's technology level was a heady drug, and balancing the varied needs of your economy with a well rounded army was strategically engaging.  After releasing a sequel and pumping out a couple of expansions they decided to try to add something genuinely new to the formulae. So just a few years later, in 2002, we got the spinoff Age of Mythology.  It was extremely well received on release - while the teching to later ages was still there, Age of Mythology expanded the role of heroes, added more factional diversity, had a wide range of mythical units to complement your army, and even added god powers that could make or break the tide of battle.  It seemed to just be Age of Empires++, a more fun and flavoured take on what made everything in the original great. But does adding mythical units with no active abilities compare to the caster units in Starcraft?  Does the extreme focus on macroing an economy up with its slower pace combat make the game tedious?  Does Age of Mythology truly stand side by side with the other RTS giants, or is it fated to become a forgotten spinoff, just one game to litter the RTS graveyard? On this episode, we discuss:Age of Mythology doubles down on the economic focus of Ensemble Studio games, adding faith as an additional resource alongside food, wood and gold.  Is it fun trying to optimise your economy, or does this come at the cost of more high octane battles? Many RTS campaigns suffer the issue of every mission boiling down to building a max population army, then attack moving into the enemy, destroying everything in your wake.  Does Age of Mythology succumb to this problem, or does it have a solution? How enjoyable is the combat of Age of Myhology?  Do the autocasting abilities of myth units and heroes allow for your to micro them effectively?  Does the relatively low lethality of units make fights exciting? We answer these questions and many more on the 114th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!-Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherAge of Mythology OST: Stephen Rippy, Kevin Mcmullan-Pat guested on the Nostalgia Goggles Podcast to review and discuss Starcraft!-Is Age of Mythology better than Age of Empires 2, or just different?  Are there modern RTS games that you have played that have eclipsed Starcraft 2 or Warcraft 3?  Which RTS game should we play next?  Come let us know what you think on our community discord server!Next episode we're doing our annual mailbag, so if you have any questions we'd love if you'd drop by!-If you enjoy the show and want to support us monetarily, please check out our Buy me a Coffee Page!

In this episode of Tamilpreneur podcast series, we cover the business lessons learnt from Julius Caesar, who was one of the leaders of Ancient Rome. We have explained how Julius Caesar applied Veblen effect wisely in his life. The Veblen Effect is the positive impact of the price of a commodity on the quantity demanded of that commodity. It is named after American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen, who studied the phenomenon of conspicuous consumption in the late 19th century. We have also touched upon the law of demand for the benefit of users. The law of demand states that other factors being constant, price and quantity demand of any good and service are inversely related to each other. When the price of a product increases, the demand for the same product will fall. Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/tamilpreneur/ . Reg Livermore is one of our greatest showmen. A trailblazer whose career has encompassed roles as Playwright, Performer, Presenter and one of the country’s finest actors. His artistry is iconic and his pioneer performances in a succession of one-man masterpieces birthed brilliant characters such as Betty Blokk Buster, Vaseline Amilnitrate, Irene, Beryl and Leonard. Such personas perfectly entwined risqué and social sensibilities; and cheekily unsettled, and aroused, an awakening Australian audience.Reg Livermore is a theatrical beast, a mischief, a maverick and a larrikin clown - he is a chameleon who has rightly earned the accolade of Legend. He is a composite super-talent informed by burlesque, vaudeville, music hall, weimar cabaret, the ballet, the opera, the classics and Gilbert & Sullivan - all forms have contributed to a most unique and vital talent.Reviewing the seductive and thrilling content of his 1979 production of Sacred Cow, playwright Dorothy Hewett described Livermore as “everyone’s nightmare and everyone’s dream”. Reviews don’t come more thrilling than that.He grew up in conservative 1950s Sydney when boys who danced or acted were ‘not like other boys’. His individuality would stand him apart on many stages and celebrate him as one of our best.Livermore revolutionised the Australian theatre industry in a pair of high-heels in the original Rocky Horror Show production; he developed a small cameo in Jesus Christ Superstar, into a 9-minute showstopping star-turn and found profound empathy in the seminal musical Hair. In recent turns on the Musical stage he has given us his P. T. Barnum, The Wizard of Oz, Max Biallystock, Dr Pangloss, Henry Higgins and Alfred P. Doolittle.Livermore has lived a full and fascinating life, bigger than any stage. He’s had a restaurant. He’s graced our television screens and he’s studied at the Ensemble Studios with Hayes Gordon and at the Independent Theatre with Doris Fitton. It’s a career of peaks and troughs, thrills and spills. The performer has not only seized opportunities but created them. Our rich theatre heritage is just that, because of his countless contributions on stage and off. He has offered us a chance to laugh at ourselves, embrace the mischievous and be changed by reverberant and authentic performances.Available in iTunes, Spotify and Whooshkaa.
