The Hidden History of Texas Looking for Gold and Glory – Before I get too far into it today, how about subscribing to the podcast. Tell your friends that you've found the coolest place on the net to learn about Texas history. Well maybe not the coolest, but a pretty cool place, thanks I'd appreciate it. As I've discussed in the past, the Spanish presence in the Americas was pretty much an accident. Until Columbus bumped into the islands of Guanahani (Watling Island in the Bahamas) which Columbus named "San Salvador", Cuba, and Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic). They had no idea anything or anyone was between them and Asia, remember they were looking for a shortcut route to India. Even then it wasn't until 1519 when Alonso Álvarez de Pineda mapped the Gulf Coast for the first time that they began to realize they had stumbled upon something far different than what they originally thought. So, what intrigued the Spanish so much about this new continent they encountered? I've talked about how in 1528 Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, explored the Gulf Coast and his exploration fell apart. He got shipwrecked and he and some of his crew wandered across present-day Texas and northern Mexico. During their journeys and capture they heard stories from the people about cities or places that were “wealthy”. Now we don't know exactly what the indigenous people meant by wealth or how they described the various locations, but de Vaca's later telling of those encounters sparked an interest in what the Spanish called or were labeled the "Seven Cities of Gold" or “the Seven Cities of Cibola” But why? Why would these stories matter to the Spanish? In the early 8th century Muslims had conquered what is now Spain and Portugal. The story goes that in 714 seven Catholic bishops and their faithful followers fled across the Atlantic to a land known as Antilia, the name of which, incidentally, was the source of the name Antilles, which was initially applied to the West Indian islands of the Caribbean. The story was that when they fled, they took with them vast amounts of wealth, especially in gold and silver and each of the bishops had established a city. The story, or fable, was that those 7 cities were to be found in this ‘new' country. However, the Antillean islands failed to produce large quantities of gold and silver, but by 1539 the lands that Cabeza de Vaca and his companions reported on were thought to contain an El Dorado (or The Gold) known as Cíbola. In that year, Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza dispatched Fray Marcos de Niza and the African Estevanico to search the area. This exploration cost the life of Estevanico at Háwikuh, the southernmost of the Zuñi pueblos in western New Mexico. On his return to New Spain (today's Mexico), Fray Marcos reported that he had seen golden cities, the smallest of which was larger than Mexico City. Today we know that the good frier exaggerated what he saw, why I have no idea, but he definitely didn't see any golden cities and certainly not one larger than Mexico City would have been at that time. In 1539, Mexico City, then known as Tenochtitlan, was a large and populous city. Estimates for its population ranged from 200,000 to 400,000, so as I said, the good frier was a, as we say, a teller of tall tales. However, in 1540 a follow-up expedition of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado captured Háwikuh and learned the true nature of it as well as other nearby pueblos. In the following year, disappointed over the failure to find the Seven Cities of Cíbola Coronado launched a futile search for Quivira-(another legendary wealthy city) an undertaking that crossed the Panhandle. His toute took him from Arizona to New Mexico into Texas up to Oklahoma, and finally Kansas. It was there that he did find Quivira, it was situated in what is now central Kansas, now nobody is really certain of its exact location, and most think it was near present-day Lyons or Salina. What did he find?
The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold (aka Fabled Cities of Cibola) became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke fame would later take up the search for the mythical kingdom. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the fabled Cities of Cibola in the sixteenth century. He had hoped to reach the continent’s El Dorado located throughout the pueblos of the New Mexico Territory. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado (1510-54) was a Spanish conquistador who led a North American expedition to reach the continent’s El Dorado from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the mythical kingdom. We start off talking about where Microsoft Flight Simulator gets its maps - and why the game may be years behind what you can find in the web version. iFixIt now sells official Xbox parts, marking another win for Right to Repair. EA has made 23 accessibility patents free to use for any studio. The Dragon Quest creator wants you to loan your copy of the HD-2D Remake to kids when you're done with it so they will appreciate the genre like we did when we were kids. Then, thanks to chat, we talk about the legacy of Dani Bunten with 80's era multiplayer innovations with Seven Cities, M.U.L.E., and Modem Wars.

What is up everyone! In this episode of the Clemenz With a "Z" Podcast I was able to interview Jennifer Green. Jennifer Green is a licensed certified professional midwife and owner of Seven Cities Midwifery Care here in Virginia Beach. Jennifer is passionate about informed consent, medical freedom, and supporting mothers and families with their birth choices. On a personal note, she was one of the midwives there at my son's home birth. We had a wonderful discussion on home births, medical freedom, the power of having agency in births and the history of midwifery care. I was able to share more about my love for home births and our birth story as well. It was a wonderful and educational conversation that you all should check out. If you are here in the seven cities and are thinking about having a home birth or want more information about midwifery you can reach out to her at Seven Cities Midwifery Care at (757) 740-0197 or through the all social media channels.
Several weeks ago I mentioned that this new edition of Sophisticated Morning was going to be deep and moody. At that time I noticed that a great deal of that type of deep house was sitting in my hold bin. Well, that didn't happen. Instead what you're going to hear here (ha!) is very much one of my traditional Morning sets. For those of you that were looking forward to a deeper sound from me, please accept my apologies (but I do have good news for you; there's a Deep set on the horizon). And for those of you that love my traditional sound, well, you're in for a treat. This set is filled with the most current and heart-warming chill house that's out right now. I start the set out with the twinkling pianos of Anam (SE) "Anywhere". The pianos, the message and the vibe are all just so perfect. From there I roll on through piece after piece that's touching my heart at the moment. And just for good measure I threw in one of the biggest feel-good classics of all time "Seven Cities" by Solarstone towards the end. The remix of it is new and really incredible. My personal favorites on the set are #1 "Anywhere", #3 Le Youth "Overgrown", #6 Kairos Grove "I Don't Mind (Robby East Remix), #8 Tinlicker "Nothing To Lose", #11 ARTBAT "Coming Home" and the very last song, #11, Flight Facilities "All Your Love". I always hesitate to mention my favorites -- but the truth is -- I do have my favorites, just like you do. I love every song on this set. It just happens that those are my very VERY favorites. I hope you'll listen...and love what I did. From my heart...to your ears.#/Artist/Title/Remix01. Anam (SE)/Anywhere (Road Trippin')/Original Mix02. OCULA/High Tides/Extended Mix03. A Primary Source account of Coronado's expedition in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola in 1540.
In the early 19th century, Northern Nigeria underwent a dramatic social, political, economic, and religious transformation. The cause: a revolution. Led by the charismatic Shehu Usman Dan Fodio, a small army of revolutionaries managed to topple the centuries-old kingdoms of Kasar Hausa and replace them with a new order. The Sokoto Caliphate was born. How did this happen? How should we view the Sokoto Revolution in retrospect? Was the Sokoto Revolution a violent jihad led by dangerous terrorists, the ideological ancestors of Boko Haram? Were they men and women fighting for freedom and dignity against wicked despots? And, perhaps the most pressing question of all: is there even a difference between a terrorist, revolutionary, and freedom fighter?Join us on our first special mini-series chosen by the topic of our patreon supporters: the Fulani Jihad of Usman Dan Fodio. Guest Host: Warren Harmon Greetings, listeners -- can we interest you in a new business venture, that is, finding arrowheads in the desert? How about a new podcast episode? "The Seven Cities of Cibola," holds a special place as Barks' first "real" treasure hunt with Scrooge. Listen as my host and I discuss the story's semi-realistic inspiration, Barks' shiftless Beagle Boys, and some of the overused tropes Barks used in this otherwise delightful story.

Fabled Cities of Cibola (aka Seven Cities of Gold) became mixed with legendary stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado (1510-54) was a Spanish conquistador who led a North American expedition to reach the continent's El Dorado from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the mythical kingdom. El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. The injustices of the world hide in those three words.” Welcome to the Nerd Impact Podcast, where we discuss and dissect the books, comics, movies, TV shows, music and games, that have had an impact on us and our lives. It's a new year and new format for Your Friendly Neighborhood Comics Podcast. This month I spoke with the venerable Greg Thompson of Local Heroes Comics (in my opinion, the best comic shop within the Seven Cities) about one of his favorite comics, 100 Bullets, as well as the old Vertigo Comics imprint. 100 Bullets is a gritty, neo-noir thrill ride through the criminal underbelly of the modern world. The winner of multiple Eisner and Harvey awards, this comic is a must read for fans Ed Brubaker, The Wire, The Department of Truth, and crime fiction in general. By Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, the entire run of 100 Bullets is available on hoopla digital in 5 omnibus volumes, which Norfolk Public Library patrons can access online with their library cards. 100 Bullets Book One https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/11683240 Criminal Vol. 1: Coward https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/11904034 Transmetropolitan Book One https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/12313091 John Constantine, Hellblazer, Vol. 1 https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/11356784 Local Heroes Comics https://www.localheroescomics.com/

The music project Solar Stone was founded in Dudley in 1997 by Richard Mowatt, Andy Bury and Sam Tierney. Since 1994 the trio had been known as the Space Kittens. Sam Tierney left the group in 1997 owing to musical differences, and in 2006 Andy Bury also left, leaving Mowatt as the sole member. Solarstone has had three major hit singles in the UK. The most successful was Seven Cities, which reached number 39 in 1999. The song was one of the earliest and most famous examples of the Balearic trance genre, and has been re-released three times. The song has sold over 500,000 copies. In 2003 and 2004 Solarstone collaborated with Scott Bond, releasing the three singles "3rd Earth", "Naked Angel" and "Red Line Highway". The group's debut album, AnthologyOne, was released in 2006. In 2008, the second studio album, Rain Stars Eternal, was released. Solarstone has also produced several remixes and collaborated with renowned trance artists such as Paul Oakenfold. In the first story the king and queen of Atlantis really want a baby. Eventually they grow sour and the king especially is awful to his subjects. Everyone prays for them to have a kid. Eventually a fairy comes and tells them that they will have a child, but that the fairy will take and raise their daughter for 20 years. For those 20 years the king should make amends for his poor treatment of his subjects. Can he wait 20 years or will his temper return and sink Atlantis? In the second story an Angel breaks the rules of heaven and is kicked out. She always loved the flowers of heaven and so when she was kicked out she grabbed an armful of flowers. There were too many and she dropped some. Those became the islands of the Azores. In this episode we conclude the story of the Coronado Entrada into the American Southwest. By the spring of 1540, a few hundred Spaniards, a few free and enslaved Blacks, perhaps a thousand Indios Amigos – literally, friendly and free Indians – hundreds of horses, and herds of cattle, sheep, and pigs, were making their way up the west coast of Mexico aiming for supposed riches of Arizona and New Mexico, all on the basis of a massive intelligence failure. There were no Seven Cities of Gold, but Coronado and his men would be the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon and they would name Texas, which ain't nothing. Selected references for this episode Stan Hoig, Came Men on Horses: The Conquistador Expeditions of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and Don Juan de Oñate George Parker Winship, The Journey of Coronado, 1540-1542 F. We are now in late May 1539, almost exactly 482 years ago as I write this. Friar Marcos is alone with a bunch of Indios Amigos – literally, friendly Indians who had not been enslaved -- somewhere in Arizona, possibly in the Salt River Valley east of modern Phoenix. He has just learned that his guide and advance man Esteban, has died rather gruesomely along with a bunch of his Indian escorts at the hands of the angry chief of Cibola, the “city” purported to be the gateway to the Seven Cities of Gold. By his own somewhat suspect account, Fray Marcos has a decision to make – does he soldier on to lay eyes on Cibola himself, knowing that if he dies his mission will have been a complete failure, insofar as there will be no European to report on the territory? Or does he head back to Culiacan, on the west coast of Mexico, where Coronado is waiting for him, and base his report on the tales told by Indians, either at Esteban's direction or otherwise? Mike tells Sarah about the most common forms of violence in America and how they differ (twist!) from what gets shown on TV. Digressions include Perry Mason, “It’s A Wonderful Life” and fruit-toting strategies. Mike appears not to understand the meaning of the term “order of magnitude.” This episode contains descriptions of police violence; the last 15 minutes are just a huge bummer generally. "Adelantado" in Spanish means, "advance man", or "one who comes first", and was the term given to Spaniards by their King as having the right to rule over newly discovered territories, provided they returned a percentage of riches to the king. During his term as US Ambassador to Spain, gifted writer Washington Irving stayed at the legendary Alhambra, where many of their old tales legends reached him, and he retold them. There are places that turn up in literature or in film—mystical and legendary places whose names may be familiar but about which we know little. We nod knowingly at the reference, but are often left wondering about places such as Atlantis, the lost land overwhelmed by the sea, or El Dorado, the fabulous city that vanished somewhere in the South American jungles. Other names are more evocative—Mount Olympus, the Garden of Eden, the mystic Isle of Avalon, and Davy Jones’ Locker. But did such places actually exist and if so, where were they, and what really happened? What are the traditions and legends associated with them? In the fascinating new book, Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms, historian Dr. Bob Curran sets out to find the answers by journeying to the far-flung corners of the world and to the outer reaches of human imagination. In Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms you'll; • Climb the high mountains in search of the mythical Shangri-La • Navigate the deep swamps and jungles in a quest for the Seven Cities of Cibola • Travel to the depths of the dark oceans to look for sunken lands such as Lemuria and Lyonesse • Experience unspeakable danger in a realm rarely visited by men—the subterranean lair of Judaculla • Discover the secrets of Heliopolis, Yggradsil, Hy Brasail, the Kingdom of Prester John, Llyobia, and the Hollow Hills.Psychologist and historian Dr. Bob Curran has travelled the world in the study of mythology and folklore, which he has also extensively written and lectured about. He is the author of Vampires, Encyclopedia of the Undead, Celtic Lore & Legend, and Walking with the Green Man. He lives in Northern Ireland with his wife and family.
Starting with travels of the Franciscan Monk, Fray Marcos of Nizza, who may have stretched the truth on what he found. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado would be sent to follow up on Marcos’ reports, the discovery of the spectacular “Seven Cities”. Here begins the adventure …

Time travel is fun. Want to learn to do it? Follow me. The year is 1608. England buzzes with William Shakespeare. Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear are performed to rave reviews while 44 year-old William grieves the death of his mother. A team of 47 translators works on an English translation of the Bible. Not one of them suspects their translation will remain in use 400 years into the future. In 1611 their Bible will be released as the authorized version of King James. The novel by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote de La Mancha hasn't been translated into English but it's all the rage in Spain. No one suspects that in exactly 8 years – on April 23, 1616 – Cervantes and Shakespeare will die simultaneously at twilight. No one knows each man will forever be remembered as the most celebrated voice in his language. Baltasar Gracian is a 7-year-old boy in Belmonte, Spain. He'll grow up to become a Jesuit scholar, troublemaker and philosopher. His book, The Art of Worldly Wisdom, will sweep Europe in much the same way Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac will sweep another continent 150 years later. In 1992, Baltasar's book will be rediscovered and spend 18 weeks on the bestseller list of a country that didn't exist while he lived. But no one has an inkling of this. Today young Baltasar is a just a 7-year old boy playing in the dust in Spain. It's been exactly 116 years since Christopher Columbus sailed for Queen Isabella and walked the soil of a whole new world. Today that new world is a place where conquistadors search for gold and tell tales of the Seven Cities of Cibola. No one cares about a shipload of English weirdoes and misfits who sailed over the horizon a few months ago to set up a colony in the wilderness. They're probably dead by now anyway. And even if they're not, nothing will ever come of it. I think someone said they decided to call their colony “Jamestown.” In exactly 361 years Neal Armstrong will do that Columbus thing again and a poet named James Dickey will complain, “There's no moon goddess now. But when men believed there was, then the moon was more important, maybe not scientifically, but more important emotionally. It was something a man had a personal relationship to, instead of its simply being a dead stone, a great ruined stone in the sky.” – Self Interviews, p. 67 Are you beginning to see what I mean by Time Travel? It's a delightful way to play. And frankly, you don't play enough. I hope you don't mind me saying. The key to time travel is: 1. Learn the details of a day that is past. Meet the people. Feel the buzz. Be part of their society. Become one of them. 2. From that distant vantage point, what do you imagine about our current day, knowing you will never see it? 3. Now return happily to 2008 and see how things actually turned out. If you want to take an even trippier trip: 1. Imagine yourself 20 years from now. What are your circumstances? 2. Now look back at 2008 and think about what you wish you'd done differently. You'll be surprised how much this “Time Travel” exercise will change your priorities and alter your actions.
