Jesus' ministry lasted about 3-and-a-half years, we think. The Two Witnesses of Revelation will preach for just that long. Three-and-a-half years also just happens to be the duration of the drought in Israel during the ministry of Elijah. There are a lot of things coming together in the passage we're about to read. Welcome back to the Constant reader Podcast, and thanks for bearing with us during our long hiatus. We have gathered up quite a few of our favorite repeat guests for 2025 though, so i am sure you will forgive us. We have lined up Kim C from the year of underrated Stephen King podcast with another step towards the Dark Tower. The gentlemen from King Con will be giving a report on how their convention on Stephen King, the first of its type, went back in October, and what you might expect from them in the future. Plus Andy Stanton will be back to help me sort out the End of the World As We Know It, the upcoming short story collection based in the world of King's The Stand. Plus we have some new guests, including some big names I can't reveal just yet. Today's guest is one those old friends, James Michels. James was on the show a couple of years ago to talk about The Shawshank Redemption, his own work in the prison industry, and his career as crime writer. We discussed a series of short stories, Life's Dark Corners, that i urge you to seek out. Today however, he is here to discuss The Melody of Shattered Glass, an ambitious epic novel that depicts the fates of the Oro crime family, one of the last bastions of a mafia that is struggling to identify exactly what it is, and what it stands for in the 21st century. But first, James wanted to talk about Stand by Me, Rob Reiner's adaptation of King's novella The Body. It features an incredible cast, a killer soundtrack, a sharp script and has meant a lot of things to a lot of people.I refer to his new book as The Melody of Shattered Glass, when it is, in fact The Melody of Shattered Gold. A thousand apologies to James for misnaming this book, which has an incredible ending and unforgettable characters.....

Where to begin. Well, Gia is crushed that Lucas let a little blackmail get between him and Brad. And she makes a pretty good case for Brad. Keisha is worried Brad will give in to bad impulses now. It is a soap opera. Who doesn't give in to bad impulses? Lulu? She's about to give in to very bad impulses. Portia? How far will she go to save her ass? Drew? Drew is a walking bad impulse. But maybe that's because he can't find a suit that fits? And it will be interesting to see how Portia evolves now that she's thrown in with the likes of Ava and Ric. Will Curtis even recognize her as the situation with Drew unfolds? Meanwhile, Maxie is still a delight and deserves a story of her own. Possibly involving Felicia, who also deserves more quality screentime. When Christian Pulisic broke onto the youth soccer scene as a teenager, playing for PA Classics and the IMG residency for US Soccer, other countries and clubs took notice. Mary and Mike both teach civics/social students; Mary in a New York high school and Mike in a Virginia middle school. In this chapter they talk about what their kids don't know that they should, about the foolishness of banning books, about violence and guns in schools, about the threat of vouchers to public education, teaching to the test, and other controversial school issues. Our speaker bios this week are purposefully incomplete. Because teachers who speak out publicly are often disciplined by administrators we agreed not to identify the full names or the school districts and schools where the two teachers speaking in this chapter work. Mary has taught for more than 25 years at a small rural district in upstate New York. She has a BA in philosophy from Barnard College and a MA in European intellectual history from the University of Chicago. She has lived in England, Scotland and Switzerland and as a teen she attended five high schools, including a stint at a storefront alternative high school. These experiences have affected her views on education as did raising three sons, one of whom was autistic. Two of her sons work in the tech field. Mike has taught middle school civics and American history for more than eleven years in Virginia. He holds a BA in history and international studies from the University of South Florida and a MA in political science from the University of Missouri. From 2007 to 2009, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand teaching English and conducting HIV/AIDS awareness programs. In addition to teaching he coaches his school's wrestling team and summers leads international student tours to significant historical sites, including Auschwitz-Birkenau, Normandy, and the Acropolis. Mike is the father of two daughters who he says continually inspire and scare him with their perspectives on growing up in the digital age—a world vastly different from the one he knew at their age.

Simon and Mackelly weigh the possibilities. Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth is tied to a horse in agony from her wounds and their inevitable infection. She drifts in and out of fever-dreams. When she finally rouses with the fever broken, Thoros of Myr explains a few things: Lem should have been protecting the inn, she's got terrible facial wounds from Biter, and she's here to answer to Lady Stoneheart, the Brotherhood's new leader, for her crimes. The lion-pommeled sword and the letter signed by Tommen do her no favors.She's taken to Lady Stoneheart, who is mostly silent allowing Lem and others to hector Brienne with accusations. She contends that both girls were gone, that Jaime gave her the sword and the letter to allow her to rescue Sansa - but it falls on deaf ears. Finally Lady Stoneheart speaks, she's unintelligible to the uninitiated. But she demands that Brienne bring her Jaime - or she along with Pod and Ser Hyle will be hanged. Brienne cannot agree so the three are dragged to trees and strung up. Additionally, Carol Baudouin, Security Sector Reform Chief at MINUSCA, discusses making women's participation a prerequisite in peace negotiations. Halal Al Karib, Regional Director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), provides insights into the consequences of excluding gender from peace processes, drawing on the situation in Sudan. She highlights that neglecting women's roles and experiences leads to alienation and perpetuates cycles of conflict.

It's guidance of a sort, I've got nothing better to do and I actually haven't been to— [click, static] I guess I shouldn't say where it is I've been or haven't been, given that that might give us away, the state we're in now. Then again, if Fox can find us wherever we are and tell Junior… [click, static] But, okay, fine. We'll go north.  You know, Harry's got a lot of opinions about you, Birdie. If I didn't know any better, I might say that she's jeal— [click, static] She's not very pleased with you. She's…frustrated. Which I get. I'm pretty much always frustrated with you. But I still like you, for some reason. I still like talking to you. I'll never forget the first time we spoke, really spoke, in dits and dashes. I don't think I'd ever experienced that kind of joy before. Not until I found Donnie.  Harry…Harry did finally get an apology out for that. For her part in that. For the part I feel she played. She cornered me in the kitchen this morning—we've been staying in this little house for the last week, I think we've probably got to move soon but for now we've been getting by. Though it is weird to be in a new space with her. She's always somewhere I don't expect. But I guess I don't really expect her anywhere anymore. I'm so used to not seeing her.  I keep trying to not see her, if I'm honest. I've spent a lot of time in my car, scanning all the open channels and looking at my atlas, trying to figure out where we should go next. Even when we're in the same room, I try not to look at her for too long. Because I know that if I do, I'll—I'll let her talk to me. I'll let her apologize.  Apparently she wasn't keen on waiting for me to cave. She withheld the hot water and stood in the doorway and wouldn't let me leave or get tea until she said her piece.  It was clear that she'd practiced it. Or, at the very least, come up with a plan of what she wanted to say.  She said she was sorry for Don. That she had never wanted anyone to get hurt, that she's lived every day in terror since Junior showed up at the house. Terror that he would catch up to her or, worse, catch up to me. That's what she said. That it would be worse.  And she said, straight out, that she does feel responsible, for all of it. She always has. Even when we thought it was nuclear war or some rampant disease, she thought it was just…the universe punishing her. She seemed…annoyed, that I'm the one the universe chose to punish for my decision. Almost like she's offended that she's not the main character of the world.  Maybe that's unfair. Probably that's unfair. Maybe she was annoyed because she doesn't want me to be punished. She did say—she said I didn't deserve it. That I didn't deserve any of it, that she would take on the burden by herself if she could.  She also did assure me that she had no idea about any of this—the timelines, Birdie and Fox, the direct consequences of my actions. She really was just scared that something terrible would find us if we left the safety of our house and I guess she was sort of right about that, even if she didn't know it for certain.  She said she'd do anything to make it right. That all I had to do was tell her what I wanted and she'd do it.  I have no idea what I want. She can't fix the things that are broken and I also…I wouldn't know how to make demands of Harry. I'm too used to being the person who steps into line, I wouldn't know where to begin making a new path.  Anyway, going north. We'll do it. At least I'll have someone in the passenger seat with me this time. [click, static]
