featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2820: Castell Coch Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 23 January 2025 is Castell Coch.Castell Coch (Welsh for 'red castle'; Welsh pronunciation: [ˈkas.tɛɬ koːχ]) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais, Cardiff, in Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081 to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earth motte was reused by Gilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle may have been destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales.John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain's wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to rebuild the castle, "as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer", using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. Burges rebuilt the outside of the castle between 1875 and 1879, before turning to the interior; he died in 1881 and the work was finished by Burges's remaining team in 1891. Bute reintroduced commercial viticulture into Britain, planting a vineyard just below the castle, and wine production continued until the First World War. He made little use of his new retreat, and in 1950 his grandson, the 5th Marquess of Bute, placed it into the care of the state. It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw.Castell Coch's external features and the High Victorian interiors led the historian David McLees to describe it as "one of the greatest Victorian triumphs of architectural composition". The exterior, based on 19th-century studies by the antiquarian George Clark, is relatively authentic in style, although its three stone towers were adapted by Burges to present a dramatic silhouette, closer in design to mainland European castles such as Chillon than native British fortifications. The interiors were elaborately decorated, with specially designed furniture and fittings; the designs include extensive use of symbolism drawing on classical and legendary themes. Joseph Mordaunt Crook wrote that the castle represented "the learned dream world of a great patron and his favourite architect, recreating from a heap of rubble a fairy-tale castle which seems almost to have materialised from the margins of a medieval manuscript".The surrounding Castell Coch beech woods contain rare plant species and unusual geological features and are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 23 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Castell Coch on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.

In this episode of the Dover Download podcast, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with Perry Plummer, Dover's new Fire Chief, who is returning to the role after previously serving as Fire Chief from the late 1990s to early 2000s. Plummer discusses his extensive career, including his time as director of New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management and assistant commissioner for the state Department of Safety. He reflects on the changes in firefighting and emergency services over his career, particularly noting the evolution of EMS services from basic transport to advanced life support with 23 paramedics now providing hospital-level care in the field. Plummer addresses the challenges of leading a modern fire department, including longer wait times for equipment, staffing difficulties, and the increasing importance of emergency management. He also discusses his experience with the North End Fire Station project, which he helped shepherd through during his first tenure and has proven successful over nearly two decades of operation. Throughout the conversation, Plummer emphasizes the importance of effective communication, strategic planning, and continuous quality improvement in emergency services. In This Week in Dover History, we learn about a tragic incident from November 1856, when a celebration of James Buchanan's presidential election turned deadly. During the festivities atop Garrison Hill, a War of 1812 cannon accidentally discharged, killing two men, John Foss and George Clark. The cannon was later moved to the Woodman Museum after years of vandalism on Garrison Hill.

In this episode, Natalie interviews Jo Lowery from Cool Coastal Huts, who shares her journey of owning and renting out luxury beach huts. Jo's passion for beach huts began when she purchased her first hut in Frinton 18 years ago. The episode delves into Jo's experience of refurbishing beach huts, her appearance on George Clark's Amazing Spaces, and the process of setting up a beach hut rental business. Jo provides insights on beach hut etiquette, design tips for creating a modern and luxurious beach hut, and the costs involved in building a beach hut from scratch.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Jo Lowery started her beach hut journey 18 years ago and now owns five beach huts, each with a unique design and contemporary feel. She got into beach huts after falling in love with them during a family trip to the beach and decided to buy one, leading to her passion for beach huts. Jo's beach huts are designed with a modern and luxurious touch, focusing on minimal clutter and hidden storage to create a comfortable and stylish space. Setting up a beach hut rental business involves checking with the council for licenses, using social media or booking platforms for marketing, and determining pricing based on location and hut amenities. Jo's beach huts in Frinton and Mersea offer different seaside experiences, with Frinton being a traditional quiet resort and Mersea having a more adventurous, island-like feel. BEST MOMENTS "I've now got five beach huts. So I've got a bit of a beach hut collecting problem." "I like to keep mine affordable. But mine are, I like to think, you know, higher end ones. And so mine are £90 in the summer." "I've had a few people trying to get into the wrong hut and occasionally turning up on the wrong day." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.coolcoastalhuts.co.uk HOST BIO My name is Natalie Young. I bought a beach hut to bring joy into my life after escaping an abusive relationship and a difficult divorce.  Based in Christchurch, Dorset, my beach hut is affectionally called the Salty Seagull and is located on Friars Cliff beach with sea views to the Needles on the Isle of White. It is my slice of heaven.  Owning and hiring a beach hut is more complicated than I realised and I am on a constant mission to discover the best ways to manage and care for your hut. I have researched the pros and cons of renting and the best ways to market and host. The beach, the sights and the sounds of the sea bring me huge joy. Whether you are thinking of buying a beach hut and don't know where to begin or if you have had a beach hut in your family for generations this podcast is for you. As I travel across the UK exploring these coastal retreats and sharing personal stories of how the humble beach hut has shaped lives, I will also be creating the UK's first beach hut map. I will give tips on where and how to buy a beach hut. And share everything you need to know about beach hut maintenance plus advice on hiring a beach hut. We will be chatting with special guests from estate agents to lock specialists, beach hut associations to beach hut builders, and artists to interior designers.  If you don't know what all the fuss is about, join us every week and you too will become a little bit Bonkers Bbout Beach Huts.

Fish are a vital source of protein and other nutrients for humans, as well as an important part of the ocean's ecology. But overfishing has become a crisis. It is estimated that 90 percent of the world's fisheries are being fished either at or over their capacity, while some species have been driven to extinction. Can an innovative farming method, which grows fish on dry land, solve the problem?Abby Bertics, The Economist's science correspondent, investigates. Tackling overfishing is a problem that needs to be solved in the ocean but also by using aquaculture, according to George Clark of the Marine Stewardship Council. At a small shrimp farm in California, Steve Sutton, the boss of TransparentSea, explains how recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) work. This episode continues the adventures of Thomas L. Kane, who left his home in February 1858 and set out for Salt Lake City.  His self-imposed mission was to stop the Utah War.  His plan was, as his wife Elizabeth later wrote, was somewhat hazy:  “Tom's plan was to go in disguise to Utah by way of California, winter though it was, and make his unexpected appearance at Brigham Young's very gates, relying upon his own mental force and Young's knowledge of the sincerity of his goodwill to the Mormons. He actually intended to turn a whole people's will and make them ask for peace in the hour of their triumph.”  But before he could get to Brigham Young's gates, he first had to pass through the towns of Los Angeles and San Bernadino. At the time, both these towns were hornet nests of anti-Mormon frenzy.  On this episode, we recount:  o  How Thomas Kane assumed the identity of "Doctor Osborne," and came up with a cover story about needing to get to Utah to collect specimens of western flora. We recount how (somewhat ham-fisted) effort at undercover work.       o  Just how dangerous Los Angeles and San Bernadino were for Latter-day Saints in 1857 - 1858.  For background, we recount the (mis)adventures of William Wall, who passed through San Bernadino on his way home to Provo from a mission to Australia.  He was pursued by a lynch mob, but managed to evade them twice. But he had a final confrontation as he prepared to leave the City.  We recount how, as William Wall was surrounded, he bore a "powerful testimony of the Gospel."  Then, he bore a different kind of testimony with what he called a "splendid double-barreled shotgun" and a "good Bowie knife," impressing upon the mob that some of them would die along with him.     o The Vigilance Committee of San Bernadino's efforts to hunt the mysterious "Doctor Osborne."    o How Kane saved from the violence of the Vigilance Committee by Frances Swan Clark and Colonel Alden Jackson.  To learn more about the stories in this episode, please check out these (excellent!) sources:     o  Ardis A. But the new record from San Francisco black metal heavyweights Deafheaven doesn't sound very much like black metal at all. Instead, Infinite Granite is a genuine departure, a straight-up shoegaze record that starts the band on a completely new path.Where singer George Clark previously leveled up the intensity with his harsh vocals from previous records, Infinite Granite has him focused on melodic vocals, while the rest of the band is focused on shimmering expansive instrumentals. Plus, it's all doused in layers of reverb very reminiscent of modern shoegaze bands like DIIV and Nothing. In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is is shouting out Portland shoegaze-dream-pop-college-rock hybrid Alien Boy, whose new album Don't Know What I Am just dropped. Meanwhile, Steve is highlighting Trace Mountains, whose forthcoming album House Of Confusion is due in October. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to our first ever listener question episode! Thanks to Deb for this intriguing idea. 1:00 Tom Shippey, sources 1:20 Hi Deb! 1:37 Orc clans - warlike 1:50 Sauron and Morgoth found ways to unite them. 2:00 Nature of evil 2:30 People asked Tolkien this very question! Specifically Peter Hastings, the manager of the Newman Catholic Bookshop. 2:50 Naturally bad, but not irredeemably bad. 3:20 Who is Tom Shippey? 4:20 Orcs made by Morgoth 4:30 Evil can’t create, can only corrupt. 5:00 Morgoth made orcs in mockery of the elves and Eru. 5:15 It’s an example of subverting God’s will. 5:30 Orcs in other literature are generally derived from Tolkien (discussion of Bright). 7:10 Orcs and loyalty. See Tom Shippey’s Orcs, Wraiths, and Wights. Orcs show knowledge of good and evil. 7:38 “Regular Elvish Trick” 8:00 Elvish = bad, orcs are the opposite of elves. 8:20 Dan thought orcs would have opposite morals but they don’t. 8:40 Elves can be bad too, just look at Fëanor (or Eöl). 8:50 Orcs are the infantry of the old war against the Vala and the elves in the first age. 9:18 Morgoth put his power into his works, the evil dilutes. 9:40 Erica’s amazing hand gestures. 9:50 Morgoth’s diluted evil - this idea has spread to other fantasy. 10:14 The dilution of evil is also dilution of control, so Sauron has a harder time controlling them than Morgoth did. 10:20 Tolkien tossed around the idea of a hive mind, but never really settled on it. They misbehave. 10:40 Ocrs that were elves vs. orcs that were men? 11:00 Orcs vs. goblins - idea for future research for Erica! Or, if you know, please tell us where Erica can look it up! 11:20 Goblins/elves = Moria, Orcs/men = Mordor? (upon further consideration, Erica doesn’t think this part is terribly likely because both of those places are extremely far East considering when orcs came into being) 12:10 We solved everything! Wait… not in any way… 12:27 Melkor corrupted orcs and they serve him out of fear. 12:47 The alternative is unpleasant 13:00 Born, not manufactured like the goo chamber in Orthanc in the movies. 14:00 Initial group created in the first age and the rest descended from them. 14:20 Is the goo chamber in Orthanc corruption? (Erica needs to watch the special features again) 14:54 Could there be a good orc? Yes. Not irredeemable. 15:00 It’s important to Tolkien to have redemption as an option. 15:24 Catholic background - post-fall beings with free will 15:50 Nothing can be created without Eru Tokien’s letters p 195 - “by accepting or tolerating their making… orcs would become part of the World, which is God’s and ultimately good”. 16:28 Orcs know good and evil so they MUST be redeemable. 16:40 Only Eru could create things with independent thought 17:05 Eru wouldn’t sanction Melkor’s works like he did Aulë’s. 17:24 Corruption isn’t inheritable 17:50 Don’t know about socialization of orcs. 18:00 Children of a warlike, violent life.   References: A lot of research went into this episode. Most of the information is from the following resources. Erica’s reference librarian brain is annoyed that these citations are not in a style or alphabetized, but she’s in a bit of a hurry today. The Silmarillion local library / local bookstore The Letters of JRR Tolkien, Selected and edited by Humphrey Carpenter, Houghten Mifflin Boston, 1981. Morgoth’s Ring, by Christopher Tolkien, Allen and Unwin UK, 1993. “Orcs, Wraiths, Wights: Tolkien's Images of Evil,” by Tom Shippey, in: JRR Tolkien and his Literary Resonances, ed by George Clark and Daniel Timmons, Greenwood Press, 2000 JRR Tolkien: Author of the Century by Tom Shippey, Harper Collins, 2000.   All music is by the amazing Doctor Turtle! Feel free to show him some love over on Bandcamp.

I was partially taken with JaF – though knowing quite what to describe it as is rather tricky – a mix of people, projects, festivals, and myths, where art aims to underpin everyday life itself.I was keen to hear more from George who between his various film and curatorial projects, not to mention being assistant curator of film at Tate Modern for a while, has a particularly in-depth and quite unique knowledge when it comes to artist and more experimental film making. It was great to hear his thoughts about cinema, de-centralising art history, de-centralising himself, balancing his various roles, the simple desire of wanting to show things no-one else would show, and why he is not interested in expressing himself.

For our second episode of Saga Shorts, we've chosen the brilliant "Tale of Thorstein Bull's-leg" (Þorsteins Þáttr uxafóts).  As one of the longer þættir, this one defies categorization. It tells the story of Thorstein Oddnyarson, a child abandoned at birth who grows up to be a hero in the court of King Olaf Tryggvason.  Along the way, he'll find his parents, do battle with the undead, raid the home of a troll family, experience a miracle, almost drown in vomit, and fight a pagan bull.  It's got everything you could want in a saga and more, all wrapped in a nice little Þáttr sized package. For this episode, we used George Clark's translation, "The Tale of Thorstein Bull's-Leg," in The Complete Sagas of Icelanders, Vol. 4, ed. Vidar Hrinsson (Reykjavik: Leifur Eiriksson Publishing, 1997), 340-54. We mention Elizabeth Ashman Rowe's "Þorsteins þáttr uxafóts, Helga þáttr Þórissonar, and the Conversion þættir," Scandinavian Studies 76, no. 4 (2004): 459-74.
