With the "early access" period for Google's Stadia gaming project just a few weeks away (November 19), why is some of Google's messaging not landing as they may have hoped? What is the current state of Google's internal game development? What does head of "Stadia Games & Entertainment" Jade Raymond have to say about it? How does Google's messaging mirror failed initiatives of the (not too distant) past? And why does Google's history of technological experimentation make Stadia a difficult bet for the average consumer? We swear that every day won't be a cloudy day...in Virtual Legality. Mark Mirchandani and Michelle Casbon take over the show this week to discuss AI and the PAIR Guidebook to Human-Centered AI. Mark Mandel pops in on the interview, and Di Dang, Design Advocate at Google, talks about her role in designing and building the guidebook with the intent of helping others create quality AI projects. Di describes human-centered AI as a practice of not only being conscious of the project being built, but also considering how this AI project will impact us as humans at the end of the day. We influence machine learning so much, both intentionally and unintentionally, and it’s our job to look at the project and results as a whole. In the guidebook, topics like data bias in machine learning, what design patterns work, how to establish trust with the user, and more are addressed. Di explains that the guidebook is a work in progress that will develop with input from users and advances in technology. Di Dang Di Dang recently joined Google’s Design Relations team as a Design Advocate supporting emerging technologies such as augmented reality and machine learning. Previously, she worked as a Senior UX Designer and led the Emerging Tech group at Seattle-based digital agency POP, advising clients on how VR/AR, web/mobile, conversational UI, and machine learning could benefit their end users. With a degree in Philosophy and Religion, she considers herself an optimistic realist who is passionate about ethical design. You can find Di onstage doing improv or on Twitter @dqpdang. Google's clever new AI-powered camera is designed to capture stellar 7-second snippets of family shenanigans. Here's how to get started. There's a chip inside the Clips loaded with a version of Google's computer vision code. It can learn to recognize faces, so train it to know yours. When you first get the camera, wave and smile at it, and take a lot of selfies and ussies. It can also recognize pets—give your cat plenty of screen time too.

On this episode of the Droid Life Show, we're recapping all of the big news out of MWC 2018, like the Galaxy S9, Sony's Xperia XZ2 line, ASUS' iPhone X clone, and 5G happenings. We'll also run through our first impressions of Google Clips, review of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, what we think looks interesting about Google I/O 2018's recently released schedule, and talk about improvements to the Essential Phone's camera. As a bonus, we're also going to try and start working some trivia into each show for live listeners. We'll start today and see how it goes, because the goal is to handout prizes to those who participate.
Nevermind that Flo finally has her Google Clips—what's going on in Barcelona? Andy, Flo, and Russell break down the announcements at MWC 2018 and weigh in on whether the show is still about smartphones (or is it about _assistants_?) Russell then educates us on Google's cross-platform app framework called Flutter, and whether it has a future with developers.

All the news you need to know for Wednesday, February 28th, 2018! Today, students in Florida officially go back to class and the teacher strike in West Virginia comes to an end. Plus: a mobile network on the moon, a virtual computer and Google clips... All that and much more in less than 10 minutes! Award-winning broadcast journalist and former TV news reporter Erica Mandy breaks it all down for you. For links to all the stories referenced in today's episode, visit https://www.theNewsWorthy.com and click Episodes.
The newest gadget from Google is a camera. Though I admit, calling the pocket-sized Clips just a camera feels incomplete. Yes, it has a lens and a battery and it captures videos, but everything else about it is unique. You don't tap a shutter button or give it any command to take a picture or shoot a video. You just turn it on (by twisting its lens like a knob), set it down, and point it at whatever humans or pets are nearby.
In this episode, Aidan Simpson interviews UX Designer Josh Lovejoy about the design of the Google Clips camera, building user trust in ‘magical’ products, and ways of using UX to help people feel more in the moment. Learn more about the journeys and creative decisions of designers at Google by subscribing to the Method podcast. A few highlights: On overcoming the myths of magic, neutral AI, 10:22 “We can use technology to connect better with the self that we aspire to be. If we can get over some of these myths… I think we are capable of unlocking a renaissance of personal expression and human connection.” Why the Clips camera still has a photo-capture button, 6:35 “It was a fun internal debate for a long time. We hemmed and hawed and ultimately decided the initial version would not have a button. ...But then as we iterated over time, we found [a button helped build] trust—that bonding relationship between user and a new technology.” On the beauty of imperfection, 8:26 “When we tried to get things perfect, it actually was really problematic. Even when we hit that goldilocks sweet spot… users still believed that we must have missed something. [Showing more images that users could delete] made a huge difference in confidence level because the user got to be there. They got to be the curator and have the final say.” On taking an empowering approach, 5:20 “We wanted to build intentionally toward answering the question ‘What is memorable and how can we use technology to help people feel more in the moment?’” Handy info and links for this episode: Google Brain: A team at Google working to advance artificial intelligence through research and systems engineering, part of the overall Google AI effort. Google Clips: A wireless smart camera that captures images of familiar people and pets. Josh Lovejoy is a Seattle-based User Experience Designer in Google’s Experimental Design Group, where he works at the intersection of product design, ethics, and artificial intelligence. Josh also leads UX for People + AI Research (PAIR), a Google initiative to conduct fundamental research, invent new technology, and create frameworks for design in order to drive a humanistic approach to artificial intelligence.
