Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation

Do you want to be happy? It's a question philosopher Sebastian Purcell asks his students every year. Do you want to be happy? For Purcell being happy has a lot in common with living a good life, “The Stoic answer to this question, that the good life consists in flourishing (eudaimonia), has seen a resurgent interest that is indicative of a cultural shift. Interestingly, it looks to be taking the place left open by the retreat of religious belief,” he writes. And stoicism? It's a way to look at life and how the world connects, how they work. It's physical, Purcell says, and metaphysical. Most people think of me as a pretty happy person, and I possibly am. To be fair, before I started to feel a bit overwhelmed by my life, I'd always thought positively about things, expected good outcomes. When I lived in another town and would drive from place to place for my job as a reporter or to pick up my daughter, Em, from school, I'd hear from people later. “You just drive around smiling. What are you even thinking about?” I couldn't ever tell them. They'd scoff. I'd laugh. I'm pretty sure one city councilor called me a weirdo about it. I know a baseball coach did. It didn't matter. I was who I was. When Em was little, she and I would talk about her worries, I'd run through logically how outcomes were probably not what she'd expect. I do that with Xane, our other kiddo, too. “If you fail a test, will you end up in jail? Will anyone die?” I'd ask. Em would roll her eyes at me and say things like, “You're being ridiculous, Mommy.” I'd bounce back with and say brilliantly, “You don't have to expect the worst case scenarios all the time because a bad grade is not a worst case scenario.” “I'm just being realistic,” she'd say. “No. You're being pessimistic,” I'd tell her, “because you aren't going to fail anyway.” The truth is that though I've told both of them these things and even though I motor through my day staying pretty chill and positive, often I would flop in bed at night and stare at the darkness for an hour, a weird shiver of anxiety creeping through me—anxiety stemming from things that I couldn't quite place. That doesn't sound all that happy to me, but the truth was that even as I smiled in my car all by myself, even as I sold positive outcomes to my kids, I didn't know how to even define happiness. I don't think I'd ever really tried. And I'm trying now. Harvard professor, Arthur Brooks, says that “happiness equals enjoyment plus satisfaction plus meaning.” Brooks tells his students to think of happiness as “a portfolio with four big categories of investments.” He says, “We need all of them so our happiness can grow in a balanced way. The first investment is faith or life philosophy, it's how you make sense of the world.” Family and relationships that will most likely stay with you throughout your life though you don't choose them is the second category. The third is the relationships we choose. What he calls our “most intimate relationships.” “The fourth is meaningful work,” he says.  "That doesn't mean work that pays a fortune or features a fancy title. Rather, it's work that allows you to earn your success and serve others.” A HAPPINESS PORTFOLIO Those four categories aren't solo acts. They work together and they all have to be there, he believes and that means? Well, it means that we don't get to be in charge of our happiness all the time. Sometimes horrible things happen. Circumstances exist. And heredity is a factor, too. I think I'm pretty lucky because despite all the choices she made and things she went through, my mom was a pretty happy human. And my biological father was always happy too. That accounts, Brooks believes, for about 50 % of my happiness. I once asked Shaun, “Babe, would you call your parents happy people?” And he said, “Now or when I was a kid?” “Kid?” Then he made a long whistling exhale and said, “Not really. I mean they weren't really unhappy. Probably happier apart.” So maybe take a hot second and think of your parents, too, if you know them. Do you think they were happy? Brooks said, “Approximately 50% of your happiness is inherited and another big chunk is determined by your circumstances at any given moment. But the remaining part, about a quarter, comes from this portfolio, which is under your direct control. “Another metaphor for happiness is a meal which has certain macronutrients but instead of food's macronutrients of protein, carbohydrates, and fat, the macronutrients of happiness are enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning. And just like you need a balanced macronutrient profile in a healthy diet, you need balance to be a happy person.” Brooks suggests taking a second and think of those four pieces of your happiness PORTFOLIO. Your Life Philosophy – Do you have one? Do you have core personal values? Your Family – Are there people you could call in an emergency? Friends – Do you have a community somewhere? Where? Is it a club? A house? A school? Purpose-filled Work – Does your work (volunteer or paid) make you feel valued? Are you happy in those places? DOG TIP FOR LIFE It's okay for your happiness portfolio to be: Poop Sleep Eat Cuddles. God, knows it's Shaun's. He talks about the importance of bringing your whole self into the community, and makes the distinction between scholarly work and devotional practice. Part of his own public expression of his faith is through the various podcasts and publications he produces and manages, including the Ministry of Ideas podcast and Faith Matters magazine.Highlights:·       Zach's first HarvardX work with professors at Harvard Divinity School led to years of ‘swimming in religion' and thinking more deeply about the role of faith. ·       The Ministry of Ideas podcast and Faith Matters magazine are both vehicles for discussing religion in the public sphere.·       The separation of church and state really means not establishing a state religion.·       Scholarship on religion and religious devotional practice are two different things, and not at odds. ·       The US is a unique country, given the diversity of religions. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation

One of the key components of happiness and living a good life is having a good close relationship with someone else and for a lot of us, our closest relationship is with our spouse. Cough. Shaun and Carrie are spouses. Is this the key to our happiness? It's a good question. Eli Finkel, a professor of psychology of Northwestern University, wrote a book “The All-Or-Nothing Marriage” and he also wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times where he spoke about how much we expect of our spouses. Those expectations can make things better or um . . . worse. “At the heart of the American ideal of marriage lurks a potential conflict. We expect our spouse to make us feel loved and valued, while also expecting him or her to help us discover and actualize our best self — to spur us to become, as Tom Cruise's titular character in “Jerry Maguire” puts it, “the me I'd always wanted to be.” “The problem is that what helps us achieve one of these goals is often incompatible with what helps us achieve the other. To make us feel loved and valued, our spouse must convey appreciation for the person we currently are. To help us grow, he or she must emphasize the discrepancy between that person and the person we can ideally become, typically by casting a sober, critical eye on our faults.” Cough. This seems like a pretty good out in any argument. “It wasn't that I was criticizing you for not installing the bidet I bought you for our anniversary for six months honey when I said you were a procrastinator, it was that I was trying to help you be the person you can ideally become.” Cough. But relationships and marriages and happiness take effort. ROBERT WALDINGER is a psychiatrist and scholar who has done a lot of research into happiness and marriage. In a HarvardX class, Arthur Brooks interviewed him, touching on this theory that closest relationships are vital to our happiness and that you have to take care of them and mix things up, and Robert said, “First of all, do everything you can not to take the relationship for granted. Even good relationships become kind of ho hum. We go through the same routines with each other. And if we're raising kids, if we're holding down jobs, if we're doing all the things we have to do in life, your partner becomes your tag teammate. And we can forget to pay attention to each other. And by livening up the relationship, by doing new stuff, going out on a date night, just taking a walk when you don't usually take walks together, any of the things to loosen things up, loosen the routines up, liven them up, allow yourself to be curious and interested in your partner again can go a long way.” So a good way to help your relationship survive is to mix things up a bit, right? And another thing that he said is something that makes me feel better about us because Shaun and I are really different, right? And we tend to argue a bit. Cough. About bidets and other things. Cough. Waldinger said, “What we found was that arguments are inevitable. So conflict is going to happen in every relationship. And actually, that turns out not to be the predictor of which relationships are going to last. The predictor in our study seems to be whether there's a bedrock of affection between two people, even if they argue. And that if there's that bedrock of affection and respect, that that predicts stability in the relationship. So the advice I might give would be to pay attention to cultivating that affection and respect. And that may mean like reminding yourselves of what it was like when you two first got together, going through old photos, doing romantic things again, logging in those kind of good times and engineering those good times. Because they're not things that will happen all by themselves. They do need to be engineered.” Problems happen. You should expect them to happen. And part of a good marriage or a good friendship, Waldinger says is to be there for each other, to support each other in all kinds of ways—emotionally, materially, etc. And to not be fake, but be who you really are. Finkel writes, “As the psychologists Nickola Overall and James McNulty have shown, spouses who use oppositional, even aggressive methods to inspire each other's pursuit of goals can increase their partners' effort and success in the long run, but such methods cause distress in the short run.” DOG TIP FOR LIFE Take walks different ways. Turn right instead of left. Sniff a tree instead of a bush. And tell your owner you love them. LINKS SHOUT OUT! Every once in awhile, a dog climbs on the roof of a house and chills out, but if you're Huck the dog, you do this all the time. How often? So often that your owner has to put a sign on the door. Join us as we talk about Huck and also about defining happiness, doggy style. Have you ever come home and been like, “Dang, why is my dog so happy?” In general dogs are really pretty cool happy animals. And they are amazing because unlike some of us (cough) they don't hide how they feel. It's all just out there. According to Global Dog Breeds, the reasons dogs are so happy are these: They forgiveThey live in the presentThey are happy with what they have right there, right now. They embrace life. They know how to get cozy and comfy. They trust their owners.  Carrie's taking a pretty cool course for free on EdX (sadly, this is not an ad) all about happiness and it's taught by Arthur Brooks, a professor at Harvard. And all these things about why dogs are happy made her think about that class and some of the teachings from it. Brooks says, “It turns out that the way we think about happiness is informed by where we live. For example, in some cultures, happiness is defined by social harmony. In others, it's defined by personal achievement. So the way we answer the question are you happy depends, to an extent, on where we're from.” Brooks interviewed the Dalai Lama and his Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso shared the following (the quote is taken directly), “I think very purpose of our daily life. For happy life, firstly, we need some sense of oneness of 7 billion human being on this planet. We have to live together. An individual's future depends on them, one individual, one of the 7 billion human beings in the group know that.” Brooks summarizes his points as follows, “The first is he taught us tonight that happiness comes from being useful and having a life's purpose, and that purpose, the purpose that we have, our highest purpose is caring for each other, lifting each other up, remembering that each of us is one of 7 billion human beings. The second way that he made this point is when he talked about unhappiness, which is our own creation.Unhappiness comes in our own mind because of self-centeredness.We become unhappy because we're unnatural, and we are unnatural whom we are thinking only of ourselves. We can only be truly happy when we get out of this creation that is unhappiness by focusing on other people. The third point that he made was about our intellectual lives, about research and investigation, about our brains, and the importance of sanctifying our intellectual work by putting it in service of our hearts, putting it in service of our love for other people, that in fact, our hearts can be most effective when our brains are fully engaged in the purpose, sanctifying that purpose and loving each other. And finally, the fourth way that His Holiness made this point that happiness comes from love for others is that we need education, that we need an education system that teaches each of us unity and oneness and sisterhood and brotherhood. And that is our leadership challenge.” In an opinion piece for the Washington Post, Brooks and the Dalai Lama wrote, “The objective is not to vanquish a person I considered my enemy; it is to destroy the illusion that he or she was my enemy in the first place. And the way to do this is by overcoming my own negative emotions. Perhaps taking that approach seems unrealistic to you, like a kind of discipline only a monk could achieve through years of concentrated meditation. But that isn't true. You can do it, too, regardless of your belief system. The secret is to express warmheartedness, kindness and generosity, even in disagreement — and especially when others show you contempt or hatred.” How do you do that when it feels like other people are taking away yours or others essential human rights? Or putting lives at stake? Or creating or revoking or refusing to revoke polices (be it about guns, abortions, clean water, property rights) that you feel are essential? That's really the question. It actually works. Back in 1862 Duchenne De Boulogne noticed that certain muscles in our face engaged whenever we were joyous. It was an involuntary reaction of our cheek muscles, the zygomatic major, and the orbicularis oculi. That's a muscle right in front of our temples and below our eye. And when those cheek muscles and that special little muscle engage? That's when we smile. The weird thing is this is a human universal. It happens all over the world despite gender, sex, culture, race, etc. The weird thing is that if we make ourselves smile like this, with those muscles engaged, we actually usually start to feel happier. The process reverses. There's a guy who teaches the Introduction the Art of Happiness at a Harvard X class, Arthur Brooks, who has an experiment where you take a pencil and hold it between your teeth and you keep it there for 45 seconds. Do it. Seriously. When you do this you flex those muscles in your cheeks and your heart rate starts to decrease and your stress in your body? It starts to release. What does that mean? It means that happiness is a shared condition of humans around the world. It means we can see happiness expressed in people's bodies. And finally, most importantly, we can actually make ourselves feel happier just by doing that easy dorky experiment where we hold chopsticks or a pen between our teeth. How cool is that? Brooks believes that “happiness is something that grows in us when we give it away,” and also that “happiness doesn't just happen to you, you can manage it.” DOG TIP FOR LIFE Manage your happiness! Dr. Miller's research has been published in top-tier psychiatric journals, and she is the Editor of the Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality and the Founder of the American Psychological Association's journal, Spirituality in Clinical Practice. After finishing her undergraduate work at Yale, she received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. In her conversation with Zach, Lisa shared the research she's done on spirituality from a scientific perspective, including some of the findings she wrote about in her 2021 book The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life. In her words, Lisa “takes the lens of science and focuses it on the impact of spirituality in human life,” with some jaw-dropping results. She talks about the truly remarkable real-world  benefits of a personal spirituality that leads to a lived relationship with the divine, and calls for a spiritual renaissance to help solve some of our society's most troubling issues

Zachary is also the organizer of the Sound Education conference and the host of the podcast Ministry of Ideas. He's also the host of a new podcast called Writ Large that is debuting now with the launch of Lyceum.. Zachary tells the story of how he became focused on educational audio after working at HarvardX, one of the early MOOCs associated with EdX. Despite doing great work there, he was frustrated by the low completion rate of the early MOOCs and eventually gravitated to podcasting as a way to make amazing educational content more broadly accessible to a global audience. This has led to the recent launch of Lyceum which is a curated educational audio platform with community features that allow for deeper engagement with folks who listen to educational podcasts. We explore why audio is such an emotionally powerful and affordable format and how in many ways it is a rising trend that is more flexibly available than video and more intimate and emotionally resonant than the written word We also explore some of the ideas discussed in Writ Large which dives into the impact that key books have had on the world around them after the ink has dried. Finally, we conclude with Zachary's thoughts about how the broader trends towards audio may signal the dawn of a new audio age in which longer form lectures and conversations may begin to supplant print formats in the future. It's a fascinating conversation and we hope you enjoy listening.

LaShana Lewis grew up in the St. Louis area of Missouri where her love of the starry sky led her to the STL Science Center as longtime volunteer, and now a docent presenting talks on astronomy and aeronautics.  LaShana studied computational mathematics at Michigan Technological University, received a HarvardX honor certificate in computer science, and attended NASA space camp.  She discovered Astral AR through the Bootstrapped VC podcast and one thing led to another, joining the company in August 2018 and bringing over 20 years’ experience in tech and consulting.   Guizella Rocabado is a PhD student in chemistry at the University of South Florida. Her research focuses on chemistry education. She is mainly interested in uncovering the narratives of success of students from all backgrounds. Bringing diversity to STEM fields is a great focus of her work. Her current project is the development and testing of instruments for use with diverse populations to investigate the role of the affective domain in undergraduate STEM learning and persistence. In her spare time she loves to travel, try new foods and meet new people. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

January 25, 2018 — Researchers are now harnessing vast amounts of information to assess what works in medicine and public health. In this week's podcast, we explore why this approach holds promise—but why it also comes with potential risks. You'll hear from Miguel Hernan, Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, who is a leading expert in the field of causal inference, which includes comparative effectiveness research to guide policy and clinical decisions.
