Though there has been lots of timeless music made over the years, punk music was the most tied to a certain time as any genre. The enormous explosion that was The Sex Pistols, the band who embodied the punk genre more than any other band, ended just as quickly in early 1978. After a media hyped tour of the US, where Malcolm McLaren had them play small venues in the midwest to encourage outrage, the band had been through enough and were done. Johnny Rotten announced on stage that the band was breaking up and a year later Sid Vicious died. For several generations since, The Pistols are mythic figures with one album, legends of chaos and a few video clips. But in 1978 Amy Linden, veteran rock writer and co-host of the Immaletyoufinish Podcast, was a 19 year old living the dream in San Francisco. She'd wanted to see The Sex Pistols at the Winterland Ballroom January 14, 1978 but tickets sold out instantly. Fortunately the night before an industry player hooked her up with tickets and she not only went to the show but even hit the backstage after party. Amy, who's written about, lived with and survived punk bands for decades, talks about the immediacy of the show and how mesmerizing Johnny Rotten was to behold in all his nasty glory. We dive into the performance and atmosphere but we let Amy guide us through parts of her cool life. Her first Pistols show was their last and it changed her life forever. Have you ever felt unseen? In 2022, singer-songwriter and worship pastor Amy Savin found herself in a season of hiddenness for an entire year. After all her tour dates and income came to a halt in 2020, God led her to a worship pastor position in 2021 and then to take a step back entirely from social media in 2022. In that year of being unseen, God ministered to her grieving heart, and she re-evaluated her relationship with social media. If you've ever felt hidden and unseen, you're in good company. Jesus spent most of his life hidden. David was hidden in the fields before God brought Him to the palace. Whether God calls you to a time of hiddenness or a season of stepping out, follow His leading with all your heart. No season is better than the other. God sees you where you are. When you're faithful to His calling, He celebrates you even when no one else is watching. Tune in to gain heaps of encouragement from Amy and to hear the story behind her newest single, "Like Cargo."

Amy's energy and enthusiasm are contagious! She'll have you laughing out loud at her stories of becoming a bartender, then teaching 8-year-olds, and finally deciding to become an entrepreneur and sell juice. She shares her personal journey with rheumatoid arthritis and IBS and how this led to learning what her body needed to be healthy and thriving. Have the spirit of 8 yr old. They show up, they're an enthusiastic Big Fat Yes, they don't sweat yesterday or today. Ask yourself if you are living the life you want to live or the life you think you're supposed to live? Are you making decisions based on what you truly want or on what you think others expect you to do? Realize it's okay to disappoint others. You can fail but not be a failure. The success comes from getting up over and over. If you're so obsessed with not failing and being perfect, you'll miss the journey Squeeze the day. Focus on how you can make the best out of each day. Be a "Yes" and make everyone feel better when they come in contact with you. Show up in that day and be the best person you can be. Know what fills your bucket. For Amy, it's serving people, being busy, being passionate about food. Instead of asking "what if it doesn't work", ask "what if it does?" Likewise, ask yourself what's going well instead of noticing all the things not going well. People are willing to teach you if you're willing to learn Figure out how to do things yourself by asking questions like Amy did with her electrician, her plumber, etc. Think long term in terms of health, it's what you do every single day, not just a 3 day cleanse here and there. Aim for long-term health. You didn't get to this place overnight, make small choices every day and they'll add up. Each human body is unique and you have to figure out what's best for you. You've gotta be willing to love yourself enough and think that you're worth it to put forth the effort. go to www.hopethepa.com to see a pic of Amy and for more links mentioned in the show

Her first career was in the corporate world that included executive positions with American Express, Citi and E*Trade.Hear Amy and Dax talk about the differences between large enterprises and small startups, and the surprising ways they are actually quite similar from an innovation point of view. Amy talks about how many small business owners are envious of the large enterprise budgets and worry they can’t compete, but that during her time at Citi she actually cut those budgets in favor of 1:1 interviews with customers.Amy also gives advice and tips on understanding your customer, the importance of aligning your team / vendors / partners and even investors to your North Star goal. Hear about how innovation doesn’t start with ‘let’s go build it’ but instead the critical discovery phase where we have to listen and then iteratively build a product with the customer in mind. The danger of not following this process is a company can build a great solution that’s looking for a problem!Engaging with the customer during the discovery phase:Really dislike asking ‘what would you do’ because they don’t know what they would do, and they don’t want to hurt your feelings.Ask them to tell you stories about a time when … BLANK.Try asking them to imagine your product as a person and what they would be like. Amy shared her experience doing this launching new credit cards when she got the answer the card was like the janitor when they were aiming to be the host! When having these conversations we have to be careful to shut down our confirmation bias.We can use demographics when choosing people to sample, but of more value is to think of all the people who are trying to solve a problem. Demographics by themselves will give you a self selecting slice of the world. Also think about probing after your initial question – 2 or 3 follow up questions make the person they’re feeling listened to, and will tell you much more than your scripted 10 questions may have. People like to help when they feel they’re being listened to.Amy talked about going into people’s homes after the financial crisis to talk about retirement plans when she was EVP Chief Innovation Officer for E*TRADE.Try asking how someone would describe your product or service in order to write your copy for you. Amy uses text-to-voice services as a way to evaluate her copy; it gives her a better view of how it really sounds. For advice and guidance Amy maintains a group of trusted individuals, and builds peer groups she can leverage.Amy shared the story of how she launched the first web pages for CÌTÌ group at the start of the internet, and what the attitude was amongst groups of her colleagues at the time.

Composer David Rakowski loves to write piano etudes. He’s created 100 of them. Etudes developed in the 19th century as short practice pieces . They help musicians focus on a technique or build strength or dexterity. Many -- like the etudes of Frederic Chopin -- were also beautiful. David has carried the tradition into the 21st century, writing etudes based on funk riffs and cell phone rings.
