We're kicking off a new series on Dirty Linen today and we're asking a big question.  Is hospitality broken? We hope the answer is no. But there's no doubt that it's hard. Harder than ever, and as it happens for today's guest, too hard to keep going. Alex Elliot-Howery and her husband James Grant opened Cornersmith in 2011. It's been through various iterations over a dozen or so years and in many ways has been a touchstone in the way it's put ethics and sustainability at the centre of the business. VACATION FRIENDS is out on HULU on August 27th. Directed by Silicon Valley coshowrunner Clay Tarver, the film stars John Cena, Lil Rel Howery, Tyonne Orji, Meredith Hanger, Lynne Whitfield, Robert Wisdom and Anna Maria Horsford. The Outlaw John Rocha is here to review the film and give you his thoughts and what he liked and didn't like about the movie. In this raw and raunchy comedy, straight-laced Marcus and Emily (Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji) are befriended by wild, thrill-seeking partiers Ron and Kyla (John Cena, Meredith Hagner) at a resort in Mexico. Living in the moment, the usually level-headed couple lets loose to enjoy a week of uninhibited fun and debauchery with their new "vacation friends." Months after their walk on the wild side, Marcus and Emily are horrified when Ron and Kyla show up uninvited at their wedding, creating chaos and proving that what happens on vacation, doesn't necessarily stay on vacation. Something like food waste isn’t a very sexy front page story on the topic of global warming, but if you made food waste a country, according to Project Drawdown research, it would be the 3rd largest emitters behind China and the USA. True story. So food waste is huge, but then the modern person busy with a calendar full of to do’s, sometimes finding it hard to get something on the table for dinner let alone a ‘considered’ meal on the table asks: What can my little house do about the fact that of all food produced, the world wastes between 30-40% of it? Well, a lot. Enter Alex Elliott-Howery, founder of Cornersmith and author of her new and 3rd book “Use it all”. Alex has devised a unique and powerful way for everyone to get really comfortable with using it all up and I was so thrilled to discuss a deep passion topic of mine personally, with a leader in the Aussie field of making food waste reduction an appealing and clever thing for us all to do. Remember the saying “It’s just 1 straw, said 8 billion people?” Well, same is true of food waste. Start where you are, do something, and as a collective we can dramatically change the story around food, grow our respect for it, our connection to it, and become clever, resourceful cooks (which means less stress in the kitchen!) SOUND LIKE A PLAN? Enjoy and head over to the show notes for this month’s sponsor offer at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I was so glad when Satauna Howery joined me in the Blind Abilities studio this time to talk about her journey, her work as a Voice Artist and to converse about blindness and bits and pieces of life. Satauna has been doing professional voice work since 2013 and her voice can be heard around the world on TV, movies, commercials, promotions, audio books and anywhere a client needs a voice. As her slogan says, My Voice, Your Message, Bullseye, and from what I’ve heard, Satauna hits the bullseye every time. Satauna gives us a look at her childhood, growing up and how she came into doing the voice work that lets her run her mouth and get paid for it. Believe me, those are pretty much her words. She loves to talk and has such a great personality that it is clear that the work she is doing is something that Satauna really enjoys and takes seriously. Satauna talks about her “space” where she works and how she accesses materials while acknowledging that her voice work all started back in pre-school with a piano. Well, all in all, that was the beginning of her making sounds and recording leading up to an award winning professional career. This journey is made all the easier by AMC Theater's A-List subscription program, which is not a sponsor but which does come in clutch when you want to see a lot of movies and spend as little money as possible. Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective

Robert and I start to implement a few optimizations to the format of the show as we discuss Jordan Peele's "Get Out" which is an excellent movie that uses perceptions related to race to mask the narrative of the story. We both really enjoyed this one and appreciate you bearing with us as we implement updates to the show. Show notes are more at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/58 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/AnarchoCapitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking.   Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. This has to be one of my favourite podcast episodes. Alex Elliott-Howery, who co-owns the Cornersmith Cafe and Picklery in Marrickville, was awesome to talk to.  Her award-winning cafe has a hyper-focus on preservation, fermentation, urban beekeeping, avoiding waste and produce-bartering. As a flipside to the acclaim, she's also endured pickling disasters that've left her crying into her gin and tonic; and she once tried to preserve a summer bounty of tomatoes, only to find herself still up at 3am, waiting for the water to boil (this definitely lead to more tears). She really lives the sustainability life, carrying around a ladder to salvage mulberries from becoming footpath splatter, and her progressive approach can sometimes have a downside (eg having to combat hardcore pickle nerds). Despite being besieged by vandalism early on, Cornersmith has been built up a strong fanbase that happens to include Jamie Oliver (the back-story to this is great, by the way). And expect Europeans to join the pro-Cornersmith club, given the Cornersmith cookbook will be published in Germany and The Netherlands. In this interview, Alex also talks about her courtship and wedding to her Cornersmith co-owner, James Grant (one highlight is what their son decides to wear to the ceremony); the hilarious incident she had with the police and how long you can really keep pickled items for (you'll be surprised). Plus, what suppliers refuse to bring her; more about her Cornersmith family, reader responses to the book and where she likes to eat and drink in Sydney.
