She is the renowned scientist who studied environmental engineering, and went on to hold the role of mayor of Mexico City during the Coronavirus pandemic.Late last year, Claudia Sheinbaum made further history. "For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico," she said before taking office.Born in 1962, Claudia Sheinbaum's father was a chemical engineer and her mother, a biology professor. Both parents descended from Jewish immigrants from Europe who settled in North America. She's enjoyed remarkably high poll ratings since taking office, but critics suggest she will live under her mentor's shadow, and her biggest test is yet to come. As Donald Trump gets ready to enter the White House for a second time, Claudia Sheinbaum has already had to respond to his suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. So what lies ahead? Stephen Smith has been talking to her friends, colleagues and peers to find out more about Mexico's history-maker.Production Team Producers: Sally Abrahams and Bethan Ashmead Latham Editor: Ben Mundy Sound: Neil Churchill Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele and Jack Young Credits Emilia Perez, Trailer Director, Jacques Audiard; Production companies: Why Not Productions, Page 114, Pathe, France 2 Cinema, Saint Laurent Productions"Claudia: El Documental", Director: Rodrigo Imaz; @ClaudiaSheinbaumP https://youtu.be/NDuUL-RQvMUThe Nobel Peace Prize, 2007, Nobelprize.org

Episode 92 The First Sports Broadcasts: from 'Yachts Slowly Drifting' to MCR21 Our moment-by-moment origin story of British broadcasting reaches 6th June 1923 - and what's sometimes thought to be the BBC's first sports broadcast: author Edgar Wallace giving his 'reflections on the Derby'... ...The trouble is, it wasn't the BBC's first sports broadcast. But then... what is a sports broadcast? A live commentary? Or will a later summary do? Or how about a police radio transmission, where the Epsom Derby winner happens to be mentioned for anyone listening to hear? This episode we bring you the tales of every early landmark sports broadcast we know about, including: Special guest Nick Gilbey, trustee of the Broadcasting Television Technology Trust and one of the doer-uppers of the mighty MCR21 mobile control room van, first built in 1963, and now looking snappier than ever. The BBC's actual first sports broadcaster - forgotten for a century - Willie Clissett, on Cardiff 5WA with a weekly 'Chat on Sport of the day' from 2 April 1923. Was it rugby? Let's say yes. It was Wales. How jockey Steve Donoghue somehow became Britain's first broadcast sports champion... ion 3 occasions across 3 different years. He was on Britain's first sports broadcast, winning 1921's Epsom Derby. Edgar Wallace reported on his win at 1923's Epsom Derby. And his win was shouted on-air by a passerby, upsetting the press, at 1925's Epsom Derby. Three different horses, three landmark broadcasts, one incredible jockey. The boxing and billiards on London 2LO in 1922. Early clips of Wimbledon, the Boat Race and the Derby. And was the first sports broadcast Marconi's 1899 Morse message 'Yachts Slowly Drifting'? In which case, was the first sports broadcaster actually Guglielmo Marconi himself?! Correct us on any of the above! Seriously. Please do. We want this to be an accurate record of events! Not with or at the behest of today's Corporation... ...Although we gladly will. Corporation - call me!

Book: The Talented Mr Ripley By Patricia Highsmith Film: The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1955 psychological thriller novel by Patricia Highsmith. This novel introduced the character of Tom Ripley, who returns in four subsequent novels. It has been adapted numerous times for film, including the 1999 film of the same name. The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Anthony Minghella, and based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel of the same name. It stars Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, with Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman in supporting roles. The novel was previously filmed twice. In 1957, a one-hour version was produced for the TV anthology series Studio One, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, though no recording survives. In 1960, a full-length film version was released, titled Purple Noon (French: Plein soleil) and directed by René Clément, starring Alain Delon in his first major role. Claude Chabrol's 1968 film Les biches ('The Does') uses many elements of Highsmith's novel but switches the gender of the main characters. The film was a critical and commercial success. It received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Law. Show Notes:Comparison doesn't sound super threatening. It's easy to tell someone to stop comparing yourself to others. It's even easier (and cheesier - although true) to say, comparison is the thief of joy. Who really wants to be reminded of that when they;re looking at the mess or their best next to someone else. The scary thing about comparison is the connection it has to low self-esteem, depression, and mental health issues. Not everyone copes with comparison the same and it can really affect yur quality of life and the quality of your relationships.Melissa Ambrosini is a best-selling author, “queen of mastering your mean girl,” dancer and former actress. She's learned how to work with your inner critic and allow the energy of your emotions to go through you instead of fighting and suppressing them.Lisa is speaking with Melissa to understand how comparison is a disease that impacts self worth. As important as relationships are to us all, whether you admit it or not, accepting that the relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship you'll have in your lifetime.Regardless of the trauma you've experienced in your childhood, awareness about what you're saying to yourself about yourself is critical, and so is the story you've been carrying with you since then. We're back after a six month break. Less chat, more music this time round. We start with a very laid back Louis Armstrong and his version of Blueberry Hill. Billie Anthony was born Philomena McGeachie Levy in Glasgow in 1932. Here she sings her biggest hit, This Ole House. There were a few covers of this record in the British charts. Rosemary Clooney made no1 but Billie Anthony made no4. She had a great voice and it's surprising that her career had just petered out by 1960. Tony Martin stirs up passions with Kiss of Fire. He had a seven decade career and was married to Alice Faye and Cyd Charisse- but not at the same time! Strict tempo dance music next. Developed to standardise dance styles strict tempo bands never had a vocalist. I suppose it could be accused of being a little souless but in this section of records its comes over as chilled and relaxing. Two from the king of strict tempo Victor Silvester. A dancer himself he, along with Josephine Bradley, was a founder member of The Imperial Society of teachers of dance. Which I have to say does sound a tad pompous! Silvester sold 70 million records in his time. Check him out below. Its a fascinating read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Silvester Both Josephine Bradley and Henry Jasques were originally dancers. Indeed Jasques was British Ballroom champion from 1934 to 36. His 1944 book on ballroom is still a highly sort after work. Latvian born Oscar Rabin joins the strict tempo crew with Love is all. Jo Stafford had highly successful career over five decades. Opera trained her voice is very pure. She married the band leader Paul Weston and they produced alot of fine work together. They had a side project though: Jonathon and Darlene Edwards, a truly bad caberet act. Listen here, if you dare: https://youtu.be/NySAbB2JLII Some more obscure artists next. Victor Olof with Tancuf, a Slovakian dance, Harry Wulson yodelling in 1929. He produced a few such records but I cannot find a biog of him. The Accordion Emsemble were probably a Zonophone house band, here they play Espana Valise recorded in 1920. Gene Austin was extremely well known in his time. One of the first crooners he was also a fine songwriter, When My Sugar Walks Down the Street and, Forgotten Songs favourite, The Lonesome Road are just two of his compositions. Here he sings- I've grown so lonesome thinking of you. PIano duo and co bandleaders Victor Arden and Phil Ohman give us Kiddie Kapers. That leads us perfectly to two records on 45rpm. First a track that was very popular in my 1960s and 70s childhood. Sparky's talking piano. It was actually recorded in 1947 with the child actor Henry Blair voicing Sparky. The rather creepy piano's voice was created by a Sonovox voice processor. Which makes the human voice sound, well, both robotic and musical. It was invented in 1939 and had an early notable demonstration by Lucille Ball in a Pathe newsreel. We dissolve seemlessly from that to Sacha Distel singing Ich bin ein spielman. Back to 78s with with Coleman Hawkins with Half step down please. Tito Burns and his Sextet play Sloppy Joe. Burns had a career as a musician, accordian and piano, and as an impresario and manager. He discovered Dusty Springfield, managed Cliff Richard and organised the European tours of Simon and Garfunkle. We close with Joe Daniels and Drumnastics. Hope you enjoy it. Its good to be back.

Fonogrāfs mūzikai nederēja, jo to bija grūti tiražēt.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the podcast I sat down with one of my good friends and long time Professional Archer, Tony Tazza. When I say long time, Tony starting shooting Professionally back in the late 90's. So yeah- He's been around. The word "professional" get's used often to describe someone who makes their living mostly when involved in a sport. (Someone is a "pro" baseball player, or a "pro" golfer. etc) They get paid to play a "sport' Another way to use the word "professional" is as a descriptor to someone's character. And honestly, the two ways of description should coincide when you're paid to participate in a sport in the publics eye, but oftentimes that isn't the case. EXCEPT when we are talking about Tony Tazza. Tony not only get's paid to shoot a Bow and Arrow, he's also one of the nicest, most modest, approachable guys you could talk to on and off the archery course. I actually heard one of Tony's competitors say one time that "he's the nicest guy in archery" Not only is has Tony been a "pro" archer he also owns his own Archery Pro Shop "The Archery Zone" in Johnstown, PA. Before that, a very well respected sales representative for Hoyt bow company, selling bows to Bowhunters, and Target archers in archery shops throughout PA, WVA, and MD. With over 15 National Titles, Tony's modest character and pedigree has allowed him to pursue one of his life's passion for over 25 years. Other topics discussed The Good Ole" days How the Archery Hunting scene has changed in PAThe fact that Tony couldn't remember how many national Titles he's wonThe future of archery And much, much more.. As always, I hope you enjoy the show!

Leadership AdvantEdge: Leadership | Influence | Talent | Neuroscience
Have you ever wondered why change is so tough? Why is it, that with our very best intentions, we still find it difficult to make changes that we know would be good for us? Why is it so much more difficult to get other people to change and do the things that matter? Even when you have a crystal clear picture of what success looks like and you have tapped into the emotions, drives and values that motivate and there's still no action!!!!! How do you get started? You need the Power of the First Step. see the SWING exercise in my last episode if you don't have a clear picture of what success looks like. The Purpose You'll learn how to make change happen for yourself or for the people you lead. The Process The Power of the First Step is a purposeful leadership technique to create momentum. And just like any journey, we'll define your future desired end state and your current situation and using the most useful one of three variations of this technique that works for you, you will create momentum on your change journey. The Payoff You'll wake up in the morning and your problem is solved, or it is on its way to being solved. Way back in 1995, John P. Kotter shared: why change efforts fail in organisations. He talked about 8 distinct errors that prevent success from happening. But that was ages ago, surely we have learned and moved forward since the mid 90's? It seems not. 10 Reasons change efforts fail as described by Lee Colan in 2014. In 2017, Brent Gleeson posited that the 1 reason most change efforts fail is battle fatigue. Bill Pasmore at CCL highlights 4 reasons why you fail at change in 2016 If you have ever failed to change, you'll know all the reasons (aka excuses) why you failed. And that's perfectly OK. Unless you actually do want to change. The common factor through so much research is inertia. That is, the desire to stay the same. i.e. the desire to not change. Even if and when we are completely certain that change would result in a better situation for us. A situation we want. The truth is, we want the success without the pain. After 30 plus years of coaching and training leaders to change, I help my clients overcome their own inertia through the Power of the First Step. You can use this to get your own change started, or use it with your team to get them to start on their change journey. Often, during coaching, a client can understand and describe their future goal or outcome. They can describe their current situation. But, they struggle to know exactly what they need to do now. Sometimes, a client cannot "see" what they need to do. Others, state that they do not "know" what to do. What we are doing is scripting and directing the critical moves. to change you need a director - you be the director of your own movie There are three variations of this technique. I recommend that you start using the visual template (using pictures). If this is not working well, use the digital template (using a descriptive process). Or, you can ‘act’ this out. Imagine that you are the writer and director of a movie and you're creating a movie storyboard. Commence with the “Future” situation - the very last scene of the movie (this is a Hollywood movie with a happy ending by the way, not some Filme Noire or Pathe real life drama). This is what success looks like, and for aa detailed review on that, check out the SWING process I shared in an earlier episode here. The "Present" situation is the current situation - as with the "Future", you want specific sensory information about it. In this technique, you are creating a movie storyboard or script of the change you want from the movie’s very first scene (now) to the last scene (the future goal or outcome). You (and/or your team) is in the starring role, you are the central character of this movie. And, procrastination is the villain you are going to vanquish. The first step is the very first ‘action’ that this character takes in this movie. Making your movie the power of the first step is to start - time for ACTION!!! Grab the template (print it out) and describe the current situation. Write down as much detail as you can. What you currently see, hear, feel, smell and taste. In relation to the change you know you want to make, what specifically is the evidence of your eyes and ears that clearly demonstrate the need for change? Draw a picture of yourself (or your team) in the ‘present’ box. Draw yourself as you ‘feel’ in this situation. Stick figures are absolutely fine. Who else is in this current situation? Draw them in the box in relative position to self. Is there anyone else who should be in this situation? Is there anything else that is here? Now describe the picture – add words if these help, add more drawings as needed. What role they are playing in this scene. (A role is an adjective and a noun) Future Situation Now, let's move onto the final scene of the movie. Where are you in this picture? Who else is here? What are you doing? What are they doing? Name the Scenes Return to the ‘present’ situation and name the scene. Do likewise for the ‘future’ scene. It can be a simple as beginning and end - though that wouldn't cut muster in Hollywood, use descriptive names (again, adjectives and nouns work well) How do you feel in the present, name the feeling and write this in the box. Do the same for the future scene. First Step Ask, what is the very first step that this person (pointing to the picture of self in the present) must take to move from the present to the ‘future’ (pointing at the future ‘self’) This should be tiny step. For example: “lower hands”, “turn to face…”, “stand up”, “sit down”. Then ask what does this mean? Repeat this until you have a viable first step. And I do mean, the tiniest, most immediate very first thing the character (i.e. you) needs to take. Now that you know your first step: “How difficult is this for you?” On a scale of 1 to 3, where 1 is easy, 3 is very difficult. If 2 or 3, “Is there a smaller step that is easier for you? When you know that this first step is easy or very easy, write down the first step and what it means for you. This is the moment at the very beginning of the movie, often before the credits role that sets everything up and just begs the audience to hang around for the rest. Digital or Process Variation in scene 1 you are clinging onto the rock for dear life... So you think drawing is for kids? Oh, you are missing something powerful. And yes you can draw a stick person. Nonetheless... instead write words in the boxes. You are a scriptwriter instead of a storyboard artist. Number the boxes if it helps you. Kinaesthetic Variation If you cannot draw pictures or describe in words, "show" yourself with your own body, tables, chairs, props and anyone else you can use as extras. Grab your smartphone or tablet, set up the video and record. Now you are the producer of the movie instead of the storyboard artist or scriptwriter and you are receiving direction (from yourself). Done is better than perfect Sometimes you just need a little help and a coach to guide you Procrastination is your enemy. We don't want to take that first step because it sets us on a journey and it means we have made a choice. We've given up on the other options for now. And procrastinators hate to give up options. Perfectionism is another excuse for inaction. And yes, everybody is a perfectionist at heart, you're not really that different. You will never, ever achieve perfection. Sorry but it is true. The leaders who stand out are the leaders who get (the right) stuff done. And done is better than perfect. Even when you do get started, there are going to be obstacles (more villains) along the way. At any point along the journey you might feel like giving up. It's too hard. Or worse, the environment has changed and your change is too little or too late and no longer worth doing. Remember, that's perfectly OK. Go back to the beginning and start again. The leaders who succeed in the long term, are the leaders who persevere. They are the ones who get up again, dust themselves off and keep on keeping on. So, kill off procrastination and perfectionism. Grab hold of Perseverance, be bold and take the power of the first step. If you want some help with this, I'd be happy to arrange a complimentary breakthrough discovery session with you as a more powerful first step.

The Common Cold Unit was created after World War Two to find the cause of the illness. Its work depended on thousands of volunteers who came to the unit to catch a cold. Given food, accommodation and some pocket money, many volunteers regarded it as a holiday and came back year after year. Witness spoke to eminent virologist, Professor Nigel Dimmock who worked at the Common Cold Unit in the 1960s. Twee Star Wars films in 5 maanden tijd. So, today we're going to do our best to answer all those questions and tell you what we're up to for 2017. Feel free to share this episode and let us know if any questions remain after you listen! Today we're talking about embracing change in your life, we'll probably continue talking about how your sexuality relates to your spirituality and who knows what other topics might be discussed. Honestly we don't usually have a "set in stone" topic for this show and from what we've heard from listeners that's sort of what people like about it. So listen in as we talk about who knows what! If you've heard about a magazine we're involved in, it's called PATHE and it's almost ready to go so watch for it this fall! As always thanks for listening!
The programme name ‘Radio Newsreel' sounds valve-fuelled. It was; borrowing its name from its visual sister, Pathe's famous cinema newsreel. The very sound of its sig tune, Imperial Echoes, evokes the pride of an Empire. The tune had been innocently written for the piano in 1913, before being adapted as a march and played by the Band of the Royal Air Force. It was this version which, for so many years, opened and closed the programme. From 1940 and 1988, Radio Newsreel brought eye-witness despatches from correspondents around the World to transmitters around the World. Launching on the Overseas Service, a domestic edition edition was to air on the BBC Light Programme and later the Home Service and its successor, Radio 4. 1970 saw the end of this homely edition, with the World Service continuing as its home for a further 18 years until this transmission in 1988.
