Amber Petty helps creatives get bylines and build audiences. She's written for the New York Times, Parade, Bustle, and others, and her clients have been published in outlets like the New Yorker, Washington Post, New York Times and many more. Amber talks with me about how she moved from teaching singing to teaching freelancing, how easy it is to downplay our accomplishments when we really should give ourselves credit for them, how to take feedback, and more. Episode breakdown: 00:00 Introduction. 01:56 Losing job led to full-time freelancing and shift in focus. 03:45 Pandemic inspired helping performers explore alternative side gigs. 05:06 Initial workshop success revealed a real demand for guidance. 06:42 Freelance writing felt more natural and sustainable than voice lessons. 08:32 Previous failures provided valuable lessons for current business success. 11:03 Business doesn't have to feel hard to be worthwhile. 12:43 Take the easy path—hard enough already for perfectionists. 14:18 Writing doesn't always need to be grueling or tortured. 15:58 Feedback is easier when you're getting paid as a freelancer. 18:26 Editors focus on fitting articles, not judging your talent. 22:33 Read editorial feedback in a friendly, not critical, voice. 24:09 Creatives often undervalue or dismiss their legitimate achievements. 28:39 Small victories matter—acknowledge courage to pitch and publish. 33:48 Freelancing provided more satisfaction and momentum than acting. 36:57 Diverse backgrounds enrich your approach to writing and teaching. 40:33 Theater and improv help with webinars, workshops, and engagement. Are you a perfectionist?Has anyone referred to you that way before? As a coach, I understand that the desire to “get it right” plagues most of us in some way. And these tendencies can be especially pernicious when working on something that matters to us a lot. The tug-of-war between our aspirations and our current level of skill or ability can stop us before we even really get started. So when I came across writing instructor Amber Petty's provocative invitation to half-ass your writing to manage the perfectionism demons, I had to know more.In this episode we delve into Amber's strategies for dealing with perfectionism, how she learned to reset her internal bar and “half-ass it,” and how this shift in mindset has not only transformed her career but also unleashed her creativity. Amber Petty helps creatives say “yes” to their ideas, get bylines, and build audiences. After 13 years as a professional actor, Amber moved into freelance writing, working for the New York Times, Parade, Bustle, and more. She has also helped over 1000 students get bylines, start writing (for actual money), and begin newsletters to build a platform for their writing careers. Listen to the full episode to hear:How Amber has learned to question her inner critic and build real self-trustHow she realized that giving 100% all the time wasn't realistic or even desirableHow she uses deadlines to “outrun” her perfectionist streakHow Amber developed her confidence in her voice and point of view as she started her newsletter and businessLearn more about Amber Petty:WebsiteInstagram: @ambernpettyLearn more about Valerie Black:The Change AgencyBecoming Power NewsletterCoachingResources:The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown
Amber Petty was first catapulted into the spotlight in the most unusual of circumstances, by standing alongside her best friend, Mary Donaldson, at her wedding to the Crown Prince of Denmark in 2004. Becoming known as the “royal bridesmaid”, Amber Petty has experienced many highs and lows during her career in the radio and media in the 20 years since. Today, she is using her public platform to speak up about something very difficult - but also very important. And that is a reminder of how the much needed and long overdue national conversation currently taking place in Australia regarding violence against women can inadvertently cause re-traumatization among victim-survivors. As a victim-survivor of domestic violence within two past relationships, Amber sits down with host Sarrah Le Marquand to not only share her own harrowing story, but to speak up for the many women around the country who may be secretly struggling with trauma of their own. Although her public persona may have first come about because of a royal wedding, Amber tells Something To Talk About that she does not believe in fairytales. If you have experienced or are at risk of family violence, you can call the national counselling service 1800RESPECT. What's in a name? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot. Even when the two people who share the same name - like, Amber Petty - live in different countries and grow up in completely different environments, both somehow end up as podcasters and writers. But maybe it makes perfect sense if you consider numerology (as I'm sure you're immediately doing). The study of numbers and their frequencies is said to influence our lives, purposes, and paths. This also applies to letters in a name and look, all I can say is that I and 'the other Amber' (as she is known to me and I am known to her) appear to be bizarrely similar. I think we'd like to call it, kooky and cool and modest AF. Credits - Listen to Amber Petty's ('the other Amber Petty's ') fabulous podcast, DON'T WAIT TO WRITE! I am joined today by the fabulous Amber Petty, who shares a plethora of wisdom with us. A freelance writer and entrepreneur, Amber speaks to finding creative satisfaction outside of traditional means. After spending 13 years in New York as an actor, Amber got tired of waiting around for auditions and started freelance writing. Six years later, she's written for the New York Times, Thrillist, Greatist, Parade, MTV.com, Bustle, and even Snooki's blog. In her Freelance Writing for Actors & Creatives class, she's helped students go from no previous experience to bylines in Business Insider, Huffington Post, Thrillist, Eater, and more. We talk about the internal shift she went through with transitioning from an actor to a freelance writer, and what helped her to move forward through a difficult time. She mentions more than once the importance of establishing areas of our lives and creativity that are within our control to help propel us forward. Amber also shares some hilarious and inspiring moments from her time in NYC as an actor and in performing with The Upright Citizen's Brigade. She drops pearls of wisdom on what it means to really live your dream, and how to take a look at if the current lifestyle you're living matches up to the dream you've imagined. You know her, you love her and you want to hear from her again. That's right, the one and only Amber Petty is BACK to chat to us once more, but this time in an official capacity on this show and not on a different show to try and create this show. Does that make sense? No? Well...we'll explain it on the episode. All you need to know now is that you're set for an incredible interview from Amber, who goes into detail about how she got on the show, which players she knew and which she didn't, just what relationships were formed on the beach (and off the beach) and also digging deep into the details about just what happened between her and Fiona. Added to this some pretty juicy details about other aspects out there in Vanuatu and you won't believe that you didn't listen to this episode sooner! Like...sooner meaning now right!? YES! Now! So get to it, and get you some Amber!
Amber Petty. That's all we need to say to get you excited for the episode this week. Because, seriously, what else more do you need? Perhaps a bit of risotto? A bit of breast meat? A bit of Justin Melvey being a fly? Sure, they will get you excited too, but Amber Petty is where it's all at. So much so that you could carry her around, make her swim back to Sydney and then still find yourself having a grand old time. Don't believe us? Then perhaps you need to listen to the episode just to see what we're on about! You're welcome.

We have a habit of wanting to do lots of things, then not doing those things, then worrying about not doing things, then worrying about spending time worrying. Instead of continuing down this anxiety void, we (Amber Petty and Ashley Ward) will try to tick off the to do list of our minds, one little goal at a time. Each week, we'll pick a goal for each other, give that goal a try for seven days, and report back. Join us every Monday as we chip away at anxiety and maybe accomplish a couple things. Amber Petty attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, taught musical improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and starred in an off-Broadway show based on the 50 Shades books. She also discovered that the life she’d imagined and the one she was living weren’t the same, and shifted into writing. She also helps ordinary people build confidence about singing at SingADifferentTune.com. We talk about the realities of life as an actor; dealing with rejection (and whether that’s harder as an actor or a writer), how “overnight success” really works, why singing is such a vulnerable act, and more. Check out the show notes at fycuriosity.com.

Sarah Blasko has had many love affairs; with instruments that is. In today's episode, we explore one of her most significant relationships so far; the one between Sarah and her beloved piano. She also shares with Amber, who the woman she credits for inspiring her to sing and learn the piano - a musical "a-ah" moment born from rather humorous misfortune. And what does bedtime for a three year old ook (or sound) like, when your mum happens to be Sarah Blasko? Join Amber Petty in this episode, to find out. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
From high school bands, to the musical dots connecting Pat to Grinspoon; a band that went on to sell over 250,000 albums and play alongside bands like Queen and Anthrax in New York. Pat's music career has been the kind of wild ride millions of young (and old) guitarists only dream of. As Pat gets ready to re-join Grinspoon for a string a national festival dates, he's secretly getting ready to hit the stage for his kid's school fundraiser in his hometown of Byron Bay; a show that will include local Rockstar dads like Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger), Pete Murray, Jon Farris (INXS) and Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother). Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
Amber catches up with Cash at the Grace Darling, 24 hours after news is announced that her legendary uncle, Conway Savage (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) has passed away. With a sense of nostalgia circling her, Cash shares her memories of the first pangs of love for her guitar. An aggressive, perhaps, child-like love developing in the early days, resulting in her smashing her first guitar against a woodpile "just for fun". She's since learned to savour her guitars since then, admitting to not being able to get rid of any of them. A memory of time spent with her dad as he taught his young daughter chords to her favourite songs, set up her for the trajectory she's on now; with a fan base spreading across Europe and a growing Australian audience acknowledging her as an Australian rock legend in the making. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
Peter is a great storyteller (as well as a world-class drummer), who's been part of a string of iconic Aussie bands spanning several decades. In his early days he worked at a pickle factory and a bank, with the latter resulting in him being sacked for a 'bad attitude'. Peter threw himself into music lessons at the insistence of his father. Fast forward three years and he realised that everything he'd ever learned, he needed to un-learn if he was ever to be accepted into the world of rock. Peter admits to some shallowness in his motivation play in rock bands, saying "I wanted someone to set up my drums for me. And I wanted girls at our gigs." Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.

Amber joins Harry at The Jazz Lab in Melbourne, before he takes to the stage to perform his A Struggle with Glory album. Harry admits it was an accident that he began with the trumpet, but one that has been a union that has taken him all over the globe with The Cat Empire. Despite the magic of this affair, he says it's one of love/hate at times. Like many great love stories, Harry admits he's suffered guilt along the way, over the way he's treated this great musical partner. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
Rob joins Amber for tea and biscuits at Babworth House in Sydney for a reflective look at his career; as a founding member of one of the most successful and famous Aussie bands of all time, Midnight Oil. Rob reveals why growing up in the 60s was a "great time for drummers" Rob's intense fascination with Ringo Starr enabled him to block out the sounds of screaming girls when he went to see The Beatles movie, A Hard Day's Night. Rob's love affair with the drums began early when his parents gave him his first drumsticks; a decision they instantly regretted. They weren't to know, however, just how far these two sticks of wood would take him. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
Simon remembers hearing his mother playing classical piano at aged three or four, a memory he says was "comforting and beautiful". It was perhaps this magical spell that lead him to begin exploring the piano soon after. By five years old, people around him recognised he had a talent way beyond his years. After years of classical music lessons, his connection to music deepened as he began playing with other people in his university years. It was the "tingle down my spine" moment that became the "drug" - he knew he wanted more. He could never know how far that "more" would take him, joining a band that would go on to be nominated for two Grammys, and be sampled by Jay Z and Beyonce, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
Amber catches up with Sarah at the Grace Darling hotel in Collingwood on a typically rainy Melbourne afternoon. Over a glass (or two) of red Sarah recounts her gravitation towards music and guitar, which lead her into a joint record deal in the US and Australia. Her passion for creativity comes from deep within her, which is why she has a sacrificial ritual when releasing (birthing) new music into the world. Sarah admits she's been "cheating" on her guitar recently. She has no idea where this new 'relationship' is going, but like all budding romances, she's excited about where it might lead. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
