Scope Conditions Podcast
What College Dorms can teach us about Culture, with Joan Ricart-Huguet

Scope Conditions Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2024 78:59

Today on Scope Conditions: college dorms shed light on where group culture comes from and how it molds us.At Harry Potter's alma mater, each new student is assigned to a House that aligns with their true character. The mystical Sorting Hat takes the courageous ones and sorts them into House Gryffindor, while the studious know-it-alls go to Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat may be fiction, but it's actually a lot like life. Much of the social world works this way: whether by assignment or by self-selection, people often end up in social environments that already fit with their pre-existing beliefs and traits. For social scientists, what's often called homophily – this tendency for like to attract like – can make it difficult to study the impact of social context itself. Do people tend to believe and act like those around them because they're influenced by their surroundings, or because they're drawn to places that already fit their pre-existing characteristics? Our guest today, Dr. Joan Ricart-Huguet, found a real-world social setting that helps him untangle these possibilities. At East Africa's oldest institution of higher education, Makerere University in Uganda, incoming students have for decades been allocated to their residence halls by lottery, rather than by personality type. For Joan, Makerere's randomly assigned dorms have been the perfect laboratory for studying how the cultural characteristics of a social organization arise, endure, and shape people's beliefs and habits over time. Joan is an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland, and we talk with him about a pair of recent articles he wrote on cultural emergence, persistence, and transmission. Joan tells us about the months of in-depth interviews and immersive fieldwork he conducted on the Makerere campus as well as the natural experiment afforded by random residential assignment that allowed him to test alternative theories of cultural differentiation, reproduction, and impact. For example, Joan tells us the stories of how distinct hall cultures emerged historically at Makerere – how Livingston Hall came to be known as the residence of respectful gentlemen while Lumumba Hall earned a reputation for rowdy activism. And we learn about the short- and long-term causal effects of these distinct hall cultures on the young adults assigned by chance to live within them.Works cited in this episode:Geertz, C. 1973. Topical treatment options for AD have limitations related to efficacy, tolerability, and safety concerns but the availability of biologic agents for both pediatric and adult patients with AD has revitalized the treatment landscape for this chronic disease. However, challenges remain with the identification and assessment of severity of AD, particularly with regard to age- and race-related differences in AD features, and with utilizing targeted therapy appropriately, especially in pediatric patients. This activity will provide learners with expert guidance regarding the identification and assessment of AD severity in children and practical strategies regarding the integration of targeted biologic therapy for pediatric patients with moderate to severe AD.ChairAmy S. The reach of reactivation: Effects of consciously-triggered versus unconsciously-triggered reactivation of associative memory

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.26.546400v1?rss=1 Authors: Tal, A., Schechtman, E., Caughran, B., Paller, K., Davachi, L. Abstract: Newly formed memories are not passively stored for future retrieval; rather, they are reactivated offline and thereby strengthened and transformed. However, reactivation is not a uniform process: it occurs throughout different states of consciousness, including conscious rehearsal during wakefulness and unconscious processing during both wakefulness and sleep. In this study, we explore the consequences of reactivation during conscious and unconscious awake states. Forty-one participants learned associations consisting of adjective-object- position triads. Objects were clustered into distinct semantic groups (e.g., multiple fruits, vehicles, musical instruments) which allowed us to examine the consequences of reactivation on semantically-related memories. After an extensive learning phase, some triads were reactivated consciously, through cued retrieval, or unconsciously, through subliminal priming. In both conditions, the adjective was used as the cue. Reactivation impacted memory for the most distal association (i.e., the spatial position of associated objects) in a consciousness-dependent and memory-strength-dependent manner. First, conscious reactivation of a triad resulted in a weakening of other semantically related memories, but only those that were initially more accurate (i.e., memories with lower pre-reactivation spatial errors). This is similar to what has been previously demonstrated in studies employing retrieval-induced forgetting designs. Unconscious reactivation, on the other hand, benefited memory selectively for weak cued items. Semantically linked associations were not impaired, but rather integrated with the reactivated memory. Taken together, our results demonstrate that conscious and unconscious reactivation of memories during wakefulness have qualitatively different consequences on memory for distal associations. Effects are memory-strength-dependent, as has been shown for reactivation during sleep. Results support a consciousness-dependent inhibition account, according to which unconscious reactivation involves less inhibitory dynamics than conscious reactivation, thus allowing more liberal spread of activation. Our findings set the stage for additional exploration into the role of consciousness in memory structuring. Copy rights belong to original authors. In this podcast, we explore the evolution of the social contract between employers and employees, discussing how the traditional framework has remained relatively unchanged since the early 1900s, while loyalty as a core belief has largely eroded in modern times. With a predicted 50% of the US labor force participating in freelance and gig work by 2025, the conversation delves into the challenges faced by the employment industry, such as market and technology fragmentation, and the need for interoperability.

In this episode, I talk to Clarence Paller and Alexander Braverman. Clarence is a first-generation Canadian; his parents immigrated from Russia before he was born. Alex left Russia after the U.S.S.R. collapsed and, after moving to many other countries, he established himself in the United States. Together, they run the Russian Heritage Network, an organization that aims to promote hockey and Russian culture. Learn more about Alex and Clarence Alexander Braverman Alexander Braverman As a little boy growing up in Moldavia, which at that point was one of the Republics of the Soviet Union, Alexander Braverman developed a love for hockey. Of course, there were no indoor Arenas, and the only time he could play was during winter when the lakes would freeze over, and he and his neighbours would meet for games of street hockey. After immigrating to the United States as one of 10 families adopted by the JCC and settling in Boca Raton more than 31 years ago, Alex eventually started a family. When his son, Michael, started playing hockey at the age of ten for the Jr. Panthers, Alex's love of hockey came back in a different way. To enrich his son's experience and help him make new friends, Alex started to assist youth hockey teams in coming to Florida for tournaments. At this time, the Soviet Union no longer existed, and most of the teams came from Russia. During the tournaments, Alex would host a few boys in his house to encourage his son to interact with them, hoping that it would help him learn Russian. Over ten years, Alex helped more than 20 international teams come to Florida, and some of the boys who came grew up to become professional players, now playing in the NHL & KHL. After Alex's son went to college and stopped playing hockey, Alex continued with his passion and, in 2018, he organized Russian Heritage Night (RHN) at a Florida Panthers Game. In 2019, Alex grew the event into five separate Russian Heritage Nights, both in Canada and the United States. Last season, he helped organize twelve RHN's, although two games were cancelled due to the pandemic. As part of these events, Alex also organizes masterclasses for kids to skate with retired NHL players like Darius Kasparaitis & Alexi Ponikarovsky in Florida, Val Bure & Vitaly Vishnevsky in LA, and Michael Grabovsky in Toronto. Clarence Paller Clarence Paller Clarence is a first-generation Canadian. He possesses a dynamic skill set with a relentless drive for excellence and a natural ability to network and foster relationships. He graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelors's degree in Communications and obtained a post-graduate certificate in Strategic Human Resources Management from York University. He has worked as a journalist covering some of the National Hockey League (NHL) most highly renowned names including Alexander Barkov (Florida Panthers and NHL All-Star), Darius Kasparaitis (NHL Legend) and Ryan van Asten (2 times Stanley Cup Champion). Adrenaline is a trademark for a synthetic version of epinephrine or norepinephrine which is what I actually mean to say. 31:58 I am speaking about participants in the study and I say there are three, this is misleading. There are three groups of participants, that include those I listed, but they had several participants around the world varying between 1 and 30 per study done in each lab. 32:34 I mention the definition of narcolepsy is different than what I had learned, but here is a direct excerpt from the study by Konkoly et al., "We have recently shown that patients with narcolepsy had many advantages for lucid dreaming research. First, 78% of these patients were lucid dreamers, achieving an average of 8 lucid dreams per month without any specific training. Furthermore, narcolepsy, by definition, is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and abnormal transitions between wakefulness and REM sleep including rapid entry into REM sleep. These unique features allow collection of lucid REM sleep episodes in only a few day- time naps in a sleep lab. Of note, the overall structure of sleep is conserved in narcolepsy. Although some EEG features have been identified during narcoleptics' REM sleep (e.g., increased alpha power), none of these features were sufficient to differentiate REM sleep in narcolepsy from REM sleep in healthy controls" (2021). [Bolding and underline is added by myself]. 45:29 I talk about neuroplasticity and how it is like muscles, which is technically true, but I want to clarify that neuroplasticy has ebbs and flows throughout childhood and teen years and then in adulthood there are specific areas of the brain that still have the ability to grow new neurons. This is still a hotly debated area of research whether adult neuroplasticity truly exists. 48:22 I talk about how I think it was an epidemiologist that said that poop is in your coffee cup, it was a microbiologist. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ariel-castro6/message

Abstract: Humans are highly attuned to patterns in the environment. This ability to detect environmental patterns, referred to as statistical learning, plays a key role in many diverse aspects of cognition. However, the spatiotemporal neural mechanisms underlying implicit statistical learning, and how these mechanisms may relate or give rise to explicit learning, remain poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated these different aspects of statistical learning by using an auditory nonlinguistic statistical learning paradigm combined with magnetoencephalography. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were exposed to structured and random tone sequences, and statistical learning was quantified by neural entrainment. Already early during exposure, participants showed strong entrainment to the embedded tone patterns. A significant increase in entrainment over exposure was detected at central sensors, reflecting the trajectory of learning. While source reconstruction revealed a wide range of brain areas involved in this process, entrainment in right temporo-parietal and frontal areas as well as left pre-central and frontal areas significantly predicted behavioral performance, especially in the last third of stimulus exposure. These results give insights into the dynamic relation between neural entrainment and explicit learning of triplet structures, suggesting that these two components are systematically related yet dissociable. Neural entrainment reflects robust, implicit learning of underlying patterns, whereas the emergence of explicit knowledge, likely built on the implicit encoding of structure, varies across individuals and may depend on both sufficient exposure time and attention. In your life and what you're doing right now on a daily basis, are you running towards something? Now you may be wondering if I misspoke. Didn't I mean running AWAY from something? Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact    No! You heard correctly. Are you running towards something? This may be a little confusing, but I want to go deeper with you in your mindset and habits. What you think you might be running from might actually be what you're running towards. Your subconscious is 30,000 times more powerful than your conscious. The decisions you make are influenced by your conscious, but how much do you think is subjective to your subconscious? More than you realize. A study done by Voss and Paller (2009) showed that even though the subconscious and conscious co-exist, the subconscious mind seems to do more of the work and is tuned in to the information quicker than your conscious. Are you running towards something? Maybe something you are trying to avoid is actually counter-intuitive. Maybe you're truly running towards something...good or bad. What you want or not want. How does this affect you and your life?  Questions to ponder: Send answers to Kristianne at createyournow.com How has your memories/experiences (the information stored in your lifetime) held you back from having the life you want now? Think about your daily and weekly routines (performed on a regular basis). What information are you succinctly embedding in your subconscious mind? If your subconscious mind is processing more information that you're consciously aware of, how do you ensure the information is conducive to achieving a happy, healthy lifestyle? The K.I.S.S. ~ Instruct your mind how to respond!   Affirmations - paint the picture in the present directly your mind where you want to go. Surround yourself with people of like-mindedness - Mixed signals cause confusion, therefore leading to no changes. Be supported by people who desire the same thing. Women of IMPACT Remap by taking A.I.M. (action ignites motivation) - The mind wants to prove it's right.    MINDSET: If you are ready to create impact, let's start with your STORIES, your WHY, your CHANGE.
