Beyond the Story of Self: Four Meditations to Loosen the Ego's Grip

Meditation Changes Everything

In Beyond the Story of Self, Craig guides a series of meditations that gently loosen the structures that define who we think we are. Most of us move through life with an unspoken assumption—that we are someone, somewhere, located within the edges of our skin. We assume there's a boundary between “me” and everything else. But in meditation, a different possibility begins to reveal itself. The edges soften. The sense of inside and outside starts to dissolve. And for a moment, there's no fixed identity to hold on to—just a vast, open awareness that includes everything and resists nothing. This shift can feel disorienting at first. But if we stay with it, we discover a presence that isn't defined by the usual reference points.Through four guided meditations, Craig invites us into a spacious way of being that isn't shaped by story or held in place by the past. We encourage you to set aside quiet, uninterrupted time to listen, allowing the meditations to unfold in stillness and presence. To access the full transcript of this episode and discover more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. What does it really mean to live by faith? In Beyond the Cherubim, explore the story of Abel—the first man commended for his faith. His offering was accepted, while his brother Cain's was rejected. But why? What made Abel's faith different? This episode unpacks Hebrews 11:4 and Genesis 4, revealing the contrast between genuine faith and man-made religion. Abel obeyed God's command for blood sacrifice, while Cain tried to approach God on his own terms. This ancient battle between true worship and self-made religion continues today. Discover how Abel's faith points directly to Jesus Christ, the final sacrifice who opens the way to God. If you've ever wondered how to truly please God, this message will give you the answer. Beyond the Sea: The Hidden Life in Lakes, Streams, and Wetlands (Johns Hopkins UP, 2024) is an exciting foray into Earth's inland waters, the remarkable species they contain, and the conservation challenges of protecting them. In Beyond the Sea, he introduces readers to the world's most remarkable and varied inland waters, including massive lakes that fill only once a century, groundwaters miles beneath our feet that host unique microbes, volcanic lakes more corrosive than battery acid, and catastrophic floods that carry ten times more water than the Amazon River. Strayer also shares stories of the myriad fascinating species supported by these crucial ecosystems, featuring mussels that seduce fish, tiny tardigrades that cheat death, animals that photosynthesize, and plants that eat meat. Because humans have used—and abused—inland waters so intensively Strayer advocates for specific solutions that can restore and sustain these water ecosystems. The United States stands at a crossroads in international security. The backbone of its international position for the last 70 years has been the massive network of overseas military deployments. However, the US now faces pressures to limit its overseas presence and spending. In Beyond the Wire: US Military Deployments and Host Country Public Opinion (Oxford University Press, 2023), Michael Allen, Michael Flynn, Carla Martinez Machain, and Andrew Stravers argue that the US has entered into a "Domain of Competitive Consent" where the longevity of overseas deployments relies upon the buy-in from host-state populations and what other major powers offer in security guarantees. Drawing from three years of surveys and interviews across fourteen countries, they demonstrate that a key component of building support for the US mission is the service members themselves as they interact with local community members. Highlighting both the positive contact and economic benefits that flow from military deployments and the negative interactions like crime and anti-base protests, this book shows in the most rigorous and concrete way possible how US policy on the ground shapes its ability to advance its foreign policy goals. Our guests today are Michael Allen, who is a Professor of International Relations in the School of Public Service at Boise State University; Michael Flynn, who is Professor in the Department of Political Science and Director of the Security Studies Program at Kansas State University; and Carla Martinez Machain, who is a Professor of Political Science at the University at Buffalo. Today on Scope Conditions: college dorms shed light on where group culture comes from and how it molds us.At Harry Potter's alma mater, each new student is assigned to a House that aligns with their true character. The mystical Sorting Hat takes the courageous ones and sorts them into House Gryffindor, while the studious know-it-alls go to Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat may be fiction, but it's actually a lot like life. Much of the social world works this way: whether by assignment or by self-selection, people often end up in social environments that already fit with their pre-existing beliefs and traits. For social scientists, what's often called homophily – this tendency for like to attract like – can make it difficult to study the impact of social context itself. Do people tend to believe and act like those around them because they're influenced by their surroundings, or because they're drawn to places that already fit their pre-existing characteristics? Our guest today, Dr. Joan Ricart-Huguet, found a real-world social setting that helps him untangle these possibilities. At East Africa's oldest institution of higher education, Makerere University in Uganda, incoming students have for decades been allocated to their residence halls by lottery, rather than by personality type. For Joan, Makerere's randomly assigned dorms have been the perfect laboratory for studying how the cultural characteristics of a social organization arise, endure, and shape people's beliefs and habits over time. Joan is an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland, and we talk with him about a pair of recent articles he wrote on cultural emergence, persistence, and transmission. Joan tells us about the months of in-depth interviews and immersive fieldwork he conducted on the Makerere campus as well as the natural experiment afforded by random residential assignment that allowed him to test alternative theories of cultural differentiation, reproduction, and impact. For example, Joan tells us the stories of how distinct hall cultures emerged historically at Makerere – how Livingston Hall came to be known as the residence of respectful gentlemen while Lumumba Hall earned a reputation for rowdy activism. And we learn about the short- and long-term causal effects of these distinct hall cultures on the young adults assigned by chance to live within them.Works cited in this episode:Geertz, C. 1973. Money on the Left is joined by Grant Kester, professor of Art History at University of California, San Diego. We speak with Kester about his multi-decade career, researching and teaching the history of socially engaged art. Kester's scholarship underscores the limits and contradictions of the dominant modern Western tradition of aesthetics. Such aesthetics value “autonomy,” insisting that the artist, the artistic medium, or art as an institution ought to stand alone and outside of society and its corrupting influences. Paradoxically, autonomy in this tradition is supposed to secure art's political dimension by blunting and often deferring any claims to immediate social efficacy. Kester, by contrast, affirms what is variously called dialogical aesthetics or socially engaged art, a collaborative sensuous practice in public space, which aims to transform thought and action by forging complex relationships among artists and publics. Here, we focus on Kester's two recent books published by Duke University Press. In The Sovereign Self: Aesthetic Autonomy from the Enlightenment to the Avant-Garde (August 2023), Kester examines the evolving discourse of aesthetic autonomy from its origins in the Enlightenment through avant-garde projects and movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Beyond the Sovereign Self Aesthetic Autonomy from the Avant-Garde to Socially Engaged Art (December 2023), Kester then shows how socially engaged art provides an alternative aesthetic with greater possibilities for critical practice. Instead of grounding art in its distance from the social, Kester demonstrates how socially engaged art, developed in conjunction with forms of social or political resistance, encourages the creative capacity required for collective political transformation. Throughout our conversation, we tease out affinities between Kester's scholarship and heterodox theories of public money and provisioning. Problematizing unquestioned desires to cordon off aesthetics from political economy, we call on artists and activists to contest, reconstruct, and build anew the forms of mediation that heterogeneously shape a shared sensuous life.  Visit our Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/MoLsuperstructureMusic by Nahneen Kula: www.nahneenkula.com

Beginning in 1880s Africans Americans became the targets of a lynching craze that claimed thousands of lives.  In Beyond the Rope: The Impact of Lyching on Black Culture and Memory, University of Oklahoma historian Karlos K. Hill argues that narratives are key to understanding not just what drove the lynching craze but how African Americans responded.  It was the narrative of the black beast rapist that fueled and justified the lyching mania.  African American activists and cultural actors responded with their own victimization and consoling narrative to galvanize public support and to offer examples of courage and heroism to inspire future generations.  Victimization and consoling narratives were both examples of how African Americans found usable pasts to fight against racial violence and injustice.

In 1990, a country disappeared. When the Iron Curtain fell, East Germany ceased to be. For over forty years, from the ruin of the Second World War to the cusp of a new millennium, the German Democratic Republic presented a radically different Germany than what had come before and what exists today. Socialist solidarity, secret police, central planning, barbed wire: this was a Germany forged on the fault lines of ideology and geopolitics. In Beyond the Wall: A History of East Germany (Basic Books, 2023), acclaimed historian Katja Hoyer sets aside the usual Cold War caricatures of the GDR to offer a kaleidoscopic new vision of this vanished country, revealing the rich political, social, and cultural landscape that existed amid oppression and hardship. In Beyond the Wall, acclaimed historian Katja Hoyer offers a kaleidoscopic new vision of this vanished country. Beginning with the bitter experience of German Marxists exiled by Hitler, she traces the arc of the state they would go on to create, first under the watchful eye of Stalin, and then in an increasingly distinctive German fashion. From the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, to the relative prosperity of the 1970s, and on to the creaking foundations of socialism in the mid-1980s, Hoyer argues that amid oppression and frequent hardship, East Germany was yet home to a rich political, social and cultural landscape, a place far more dynamic than the Cold War caricature often painted in the West. The Dublin Festival of History is brought to you by Dublin City Council, and organised by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with Dublin City Council Culture Company. Adam Rutherford asks what ordinary life was like in the Soviet Union and how far its collapse helps to explain Russia today. Karl Schlögel is one of the world's leading historians of the Soviet Union. In his latest book, The Soviet Century: Archaeology of a Lost World (translated by Rodney Livingstone), he recreates an encyclopaedic and richly detailed history of daily life, both big and small. He examines the planned economy, the railway system and the steel city of Magnitogorsk as well as cookbooks, parades and the ubiquitous perfume Red Moscow. The historian Katja Hoyer presents a more nuanced picture of life in East Germany, far from the caricature often painted in the West. In Beyond the Wall: East Germany, 1949-1990 she acknowledges the oppression and hardship often faced by ordinary people, but argues that this now-vanished society was also home to its own distinctive and rich social and cultural landscape. But what did it feel like to live through the fall of communism and then democracy? These are the questions Adam Curtis looked to reveal in his 7-part television series, Russia 1985-1999 TraumaZone (available on BBC iPlayer). The archive footage from thousands of hours of tapes filmed by BBC crews across the country records the lives of Russians at every level of society as their world collapsed around them. Writer and creator Christian Tropeano from Beyond the Beyond is the perfect guest to launch into 2023 in Episode #569! Christian's sci-fi mini-series from Scout Comics is the perfect kick-off to a new year! It's described this way: “In Beyond the Beyond, we meet Nova Vega, a teenage idealist who resides in a mining colony run by the oppressive Omni Corporation. Instead of entering the mining academy, she'd much rather be out exploring the stars like her parents before her. We also encounter Sirius Vega, Nova's older brother and guardian, who picks her up after she's thrown out of class for insubordination. Nova finally enacts her plan to escape the colony and explore the alien world from where her parents never returned.” We talk about the characters in this book, what it was like to create this title, and what we can expect from Christian in the future! Important disclaimer: I do help out Scout Comics behind the scenes, but I didn't have anything to do with this great comic's creation! Be sure not to miss this great conversation with an up-and-coming comics talent!

In Beyond the Door of No Return: Confronting Hidden Colonial Histories through Contemporary Art (Skira, 2021), art historian and curator Selene Wendt presents lesser-known tales of anticolonial defiance in artworks and marginal histories worldwide. The artists featured in this book create compelling narratives that shed light on the entangled colonial histories that connect Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. Collectively, these artists provide crucial insight into some of the lesser-known aspects of colonial history, such as Norwegian involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. They describe the lives of freedom fighters such as Venus Johannes, Mary Thomas, Olaudah Equiano and Anna Heegaard. By highlighting the stories of those who have been historically silenced, we encounter a more nuanced understanding of colonial history and the factors that have contributed to the continued effects of colonialism today, most evidently witnessed in the prevalence of institutional, systemic and everyday racism, poverty and forced migration. The book includes artists John Akomfrah, La Vaughn Belle, Manthia Diawara, Jeannette Ehlers, Michelle Eistrup, Sasha Huber, Oceana James, Patricia Kaersenhout, Grada Kilomba, Suchitra Mattai and Alberta Whittle. In Beyond the Binary of Deconstruction and Reconstruction Part Five, the multiverse of self, co hosts, Bonnie, Casey, Jeff, and Rajeev dive into the most uncomfortable and awkward of spaces “the self.”  The work and interview with Debbie Glander is referenced to remind us that our formation (childhood, puberty, adolescence) was not a solo project but many, in trusted positions, had major impacts on who we have become.  Each co-host still feels the lingering stings of being told we were sinful-to-the-core and the profound difficulty that creates when trying to trust oneself. This results in a reduction of the idea of self and a rejection of self as complex.  “It takes a lot of work to become truly oneself.” Bonnie The conversation explores the problems when “trusting self” is claimed in the “alternate facts, anti-vax, crowd;” and the difficulties social media imposes on all people.  Facing the “facts” about why we have come to certain conclusions may be the first real step to self discovery. It is essential for many of us to get professional therapy, not the “christian” counselor in the church basement.  A necessary developmental ingredient is the “deliciousness of adolescence” that many of us in the evangelical/fundamentalist world were denied. How were the decisions you made shaped? A possible way forward isn't a hollow reclamation of a rebellious youth but instead a wholly-process-of-grieving and of forgiveness of younger selves. Sometimes, the shadow side should be brought forward in order to disperse the controls in place that force us into gender roles and relational dynamics that serve to uphold the toxicity of “men as the head of everything.” A primary fallacy is that the self is fixed. We are not the sum total of our stories. And while Enneagram is helpful to self discovery, we must not be defined by our number. Self is a process, a moment by moment discovery. The journey should reject “conformity equals unity” and lean into respectful conflict between authentic self-moments in order to get anywhere real.  And maybe find things to have gratitude for along the way.  And finally, ever wonder what a “train wreck of a segment” sounds like - take a listen. Each host takes a well known and well loved story and shares a synopsis - the other hosts try to guess the title of the work.  “Dazed and Uncomprehending” is suggested as the title for a handbook on men.  Ya...it's a mess but an endearing mess. In Beyond the Binary of Deconstruction and Reconstruction Part 4 the hosts discuss the voices that helped them reconstruct some semblance of belief… or non-belief.  The legend and public persona of Rob Bell unexpectedly becomes the yardstick that each host measures their rebuilding experiences against.  Each host shares a ton of resources and voices that helped them in their movement away from fundamentalist authority.  Some that became irrelevant and others that still ring true today. The episode finishes with the revival of an old segment formerly known as Jesus or Jay-Z and now rebranded as Friday Night or Sunday Morning.  Each host guesses if a set of lyrics is from a ‘christian' or ‘secular' musician. In Beyond the Binary of Deconstruction and Reconstruction Part Three, the Irencast crew try desperately to come up with suitable metaphors for the ‘Dark Night of the Soul' stage in deconstruction.  Since each host had such different experiences the task becomes difficult, which leads to a beautiful discussion on why these moments cannot be boiled down to a formula. We all experience our faith journey differently, and while there are some commonalities, we cannot prescribe a specific way out for any one person.  Sometimes we need to sit, listen and just experience certain moments in life.  This conversation is emblematic of that truth. The episode ends with the return of an old segment, formerly known as Jesus or Jay-Z.  Rebranded as Friday Night or Sunday Morning.  Each host shares some song lyrics that could be taken as either ‘Christian' or ‘secular'.  The other hosts decide where they stand and per usual the segment degrades into some good old fashion banter. Being gracious with yourself, finding a safe place to express anger and learning to listen are some of the lessons learned by our hosts in their waking up aftermaths.  They also explore how those manifestations of waking up can be connected to our place in this world.  Race, gender and sexual identities can play a big part in what we feel we are “allowed” to feel or express.  Triggers are also talked about as important revelations about our own assumptions. BEYOND THE POWER OF LOVE: A WOMAN'S JOURNEY THROUGH BETRAYAL OF SPOUSAL ABUSE AND HER TRANSFORMATION THROUGH THE POWER OF LOVE by Janice Romney Truly this book is a painful story. For Janice to share such personal and private violence in an attempt to help many to heal is to be admonished. The critical realization that healing cannot be found in an abusive relationship is the wake-up call needed to begin to stop the abuse cycle and to begin to heal… This book gives an inside view, to comprehend and help victims to let go and find inner peace victims can return their hearts to love and create a whole new future. The first step towards this deep inner healing can start today with Beyond the Power of Love. Janice Romney is an acclaimed speaker and inspirational voice for women. Since 2004, she has mentored women in crisis from spousal/ partner abuse and taught high school students the risks of teen dating violence. She currently lives in New Mexico. Some of Janice Romney’s earliest bring back painful images of sexual abuse, and the guilt and turmoil from that abuse at age five carried through her life. In Beyond the Power of Love, Romney narrates her life story from the of a mother and woman who lived through abuse, divorce marriage, transformation, and fallen dreams— only to discover the healing power of love. In this new revision of her earlier book, Beneath the Wings of an Angel, she provides firsthand insight deep into the heart of a disturbing and terrifying world of violence. She shares a journey filled with heartbreaking challenges as she moves from domestic violence. Even with its difficulties, however, her story is one of great healing, faith, and hope. https://www.readersmagnet.com/product/beyond-the-power-of-love/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/janromney.mp3

Crowning the Queen of the Intimate Sex Scene: Gina Prince-Bythewood featuring Sasheer Zamata   Show notes - https://bit.ly/2FIgSdC   This week, Meg guides us through some of her favorite sex scenes from the last 20 years and shouts-out the filmmakers behind them. Even though the characters and stories are diverse in these flicks, we end up realizing they have much more in common than we initially noticed. The common denominator among the filmmakers: taking the time to research and rewrite when putting together a movie that features real intimacy and onscreen character development.   The Movies   Love and Basketball (2000) At the top of the list is writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood, whom we crown “Queen of the Intimate Sex Scene.” We dig into the groundbreaking, boundary-pushing bedroom scenes in her films Love and Basketball and Beyond the Lights. Love and Basketball follows Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps), childhood besties whose undying love for basketball causes their own love to bloom.    Beyond the Lights (2014)   In Beyond the Lights, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Noni, a Rihanna-adjacent pop star who is saved by Kaz (pre-#MeToo Nate Parker), an earnest cop who couldn’t be farther from her world and, of course, they fall in love.   If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)   Then Meg and Beandrea take a closer look at the sex scenes in If Beale Street Could Talk from Academy Award-winner Barry Jenkins, who directed and wrote the pic. Here’s another set of childhood friends whose love matures as they get older. Fonny (Stephan James) and Tish (Kiki Layne) are goals!   Lingua Franca (2020)   Then we take up the auteur film Lingua Franca from indie writer-director-star Isabel Sandoval. Sandoval plays an undocumented trans woman who works as a live-in caretaker for an elderly woman (Lynn Cohen - RIP legend!) and gets involved with her grandson. We love that this movie is about a character who is a trans woman (and is played by a trans woman who also made the movie) and, most importantly, that the story isn’t about gender transition. Trans folks contain multitudes, people!    Atonement (2008)   And last, but definitely not least: the BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning film Atonement, directed by Joe Wright with a screenplay from Christopher Hampton. Meg swoons over the subtleties of the acting performances, the direction, and of course, that stunning green gown. (Also: Beandrea realizes that Saoirse Ronan has been acting since she was a wee little one. Check out CherryPicks’ tribute to Saoirse here!)   The Interview Sasheer Zamata in WOKE. Courtesy of Hulu. For our interview this week, we chat with the delightful Sasheer Zamata who appears in the Hulu series Woke. We dig into what it was like playing a leading lady for the first time in the Stella Meghie indie film The Weekend (2018), what it was like doing bedroom scenes, and just how amazing “WAP” (and Cardi B’s insta) are. She also reminds us that the 1995 film Waiting To Exhale is one to keep coming back to again and again.   Credits   CherryPop is presented by CherryPicks. A riveting insider perspective from Ireland's former state pathologist Marie Cassidy. "For over thirty years, bodies have been my business. The lucky ones have died peacefully in their own bed, surrounded by loved ones. But, life, or should I say death, is not always like that. This is your opportunity to duck under the police tape with me. Walk carefully in my footprints and follow me into the scene but don't touch anything, just look. Remember Locard's principle, every contact leaves a trace . . ." Marie Cassidy was Ireland's State Pathologist from 2004 until 2018. During that time, she was involved in many high-profile cases, including the Stardust exhumation and the deaths of Siobhan Kearney, Rachel O'Reilly, Robert Holohan and Tom O'Gorman. In Beyond the Tape, she invites us into the world of forensic pathology, and shares her remarkable personal journey, from working-class Glasgow to becoming Ireland's head pathologist. [Intro: 5:18 | Transcript: ENG/BP: https://bit.ly/3jqcdMk / https://bit.ly/39iuKp6] In this episode, I speak with feminist writer and teacher Silvia Federici. We discuss the themes of her new book ‘Beyond the Periphery of the Skin: Rethinking, Remaking, and Reclaiming the Body in Contemporary Capitalism’ published through PM Press.  The body—our sense of “self” in relation to others—has been restricted, reduced, and mutilated under Capitalism and the impositions of the State. This is particularly true with women, as Federici has thoroughly examined throughout her decades of research, in particular with her seminal work ‘Caliban and the Witch,’ which lucidly explores the brutal transformation European populations were forced to endure as these societies began to transition to the social order of Capitalism, now global in scope and reach. Occurring over centuries, this transition—with the enclosure of the Commons and the femicidal witch hunts— dramatically restricted of the sovereignty of the peasant class and brutalized the bodies of women. This process was fundamental in the constriction of the individual and its relations “beyond the periphery of the skin,” the consequences of which we can see up to the present moment. “More than ever, “the body” is today at the center of radical and institutional politics. Beyond the North Wind: Russia in Recipes and LoreBy Darra Goldstein INTRO: Welcome to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book with Suzy Chase. She's just a home cook in New York City, sitting at her dining room table talking to cookbook authors.Darra Goldstein: I'm Darra Goldstein, and my latest book is Beyond the North Wind: Russia in Recipes and Lore.Suzy Chase: For more Cookery by the Book, you can follow me on Instagram. If you enjoy this podcast, please be sure to share it with a friend. I'm always looking for new people to enjoy Cookery by the Book. Now on with this show.Suzy Chase: The first time you traveled to Russia was in your imagination at five years old when you discovered a small wooden cup in your parents' closet. What was it about that cup?Darra Goldstein: I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it was so different from anything else I had ever seen. It was wooden and engraved with woodcuts and painted, and the scene was of onion domes. So, Russian Orthodox churches although I obviously at age five couldn't say that it was a Russian Orthodox church. But I sensed that it was something very exotic, and then I was told that it had been my grandmother's, and she came from Russia. And so I created this whole narrative, this whole story about it. A couple years later, my beloved little brother did a chemistry experiment right in that cup and destroyed it.Suzy Chase: No.Darra Goldstein: Yes. I was devastated because the cup somehow represented everything that my grandmother would never tell me about her life in the old country. And when I was putting together the burnt pieces of this cup, I saw on the bottom that there was a stamp that said Made in USSR, and I realized that I had just created a fiction. That it wasn't from the old country. She hadn't brought it from her childhood to the United States. It was a souvenir that somehow had ended up in my parents' closet.Suzy Chase: So let's fast forward to 1972. Can you describe what it was like to immerse yourself in Soviet Russia?Darra Goldstein: Yeah, it was kind of frightening but at the same time exhilarating. I had tried to go there to study. It was in the depths of the Cold War, and as a young American it was quite difficult to get there. And I was accepted in the one program that would have allowed for a semester of study there.Darra Goldstein: So I went to University of Helsinki instead to study Russia and went on a weekend jaunt with a group of Fins to Leningrad. They liked to go there because the alcohol was cheaper in the Soviet Union. My first impression after crossing the border, and the bus was very thoroughly checked by Soviet guards going into a building in what had been part of Finland but was now Soviet Union called Vyborg. And just smelling cabbage and onions.Darra Goldstein: So my first experience was one that was perhaps not so pleasant. Cabbage and onions smell fantastic but only when they're well cooked, and this smelled old. The world seemed gray on the other side of the border, and people seemed closed up. But there was also something intriguing. I met a group of young disaffected Russians, and they took me under their wing. And I saw a completely different side. One of joyousness and hilarity and also delicious food.Darra Goldstein: There were wonderful hot donuts. This was in November, so it was already cold and snowy. And there were fresh donuts coming right out of these big vats in little kiosks by the railroad station. There were Crimean meat pies called chebureki that also were fried, and quite luscious, and just exploded with flavor in my mouth. There were little shops that sold the Siberian dumplings known pelmeni. Where you could go in and get a steaming bowl. I really had flavors I had never encountered before.Suzy Chase: And wasn't this around the time that it was dangerous for Russians to interact with Americans?Darra Goldstein: Yes. They wouldn't have been arrested, but they were often called in and harassed and made to feel very uncomfortable. So the people who did open their homes to me were taking certain risk. But there's this hospitality that people are warm, the tables are filled with all kinds of food that you wouldn't necessarily have seen in the stores during the Soviet years because they wanted to do whatever they could to honor guests.Darra Goldstein: That generosity of spirit is something that I think is deeply Russian and that I have wanted to convey to Americans. Especially now when things are once again so fraught with Russia.Suzy Chase: So this cookbook is filled with your stories of Russian culture and spectacular recipes from obscure to well known. Would you say Russian cuisine is defined by geography?Darra Goldstein: I think originally it was. Again, today the world is very different and you can go there and find food and produce from many parts of the world. And so it's not as limited as it once was. What I wanted to do with this book was try to go back to discover the elemental flavors, the foods that people have been cooking for a good ... Well, in terms of Russian history, Russia accepted Christianity in 988. So that is sort of the beginning of Russian history. So 1,000 years.Darra Goldstein: And these are foods and ingredients that now we consider very healthful. There's a lot of fermentation, a lot of whole grains, a lot of cultured dairy products, root vegetables. All of these things were what they had to work with because of the cold climate. And beautiful, beautiful fish.Suzy Chase: According to you, what's the true heart of Russian food?Darra Goldstein: I would say that it has to do with a taste for the sour. A tanginess that you get from fermentation, from culturing, from curing. There is a lot of salted fish. There's smoked fish. There are pickles that are done through lacto-fermentation where you just layer them with salt and you get these wonderful probiotics. Russian style pickles don't use vinegar. Mushrooms are salted. A lot of the vegetables are very slow cooked. One of the distinctive things about traditional Russian cooking is that they had big masonry stoves. There was a lot of wood. That was one thing that was in abundance in the Russian north, and so people didn't have to spare fuel as they did in other parts of the world.Darra Goldstein: These stoves were heated to very high temperatures at which point Russia's wonderful pies could be baked to get beautifully browned crusts. You could bake bread. And then as the temperature fell, you would put in slow cooked stews or vegetable dishes. One of the revelations for me was just taking turnips, which I think in the States turnips aren't a go-to vegetable the way say broccoli might be. And you just layer these turnips in a casserole and cook them very slowly with a little bit of water and a bit of sunflower oil. They turn out melting in your mouth and are really delicious.Suzy Chase: As I've said many times on this podcast, my favorite types of cookbooks are ones that are part travel log and part recipes. In Beyond the North Wind, the photographs make us feel like we're meandering around the countryside. Tell us a little bit about the photos.Darra Goldstein: The photos are extraordinary. I wanted the photographer to be the same photographer who had shot the pictures for my previous cookbook, Fire and Ice: Classic Nordic Cooking. His name is Stefan Wettainen, and he's a Swede of Finnish background. He just captured the landscape photography so beautifully in Fire and Ice as well as the food shots that I knew he was the one I wanted.Darra Goldstein: But when I first asked him if he would participate in this book, he hesitated. He had grown up with his mother's stories of really severe hardship and loss during the so-called Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union 1939, 1940. And he had heard this phrase in his childhood, "Never trust a Russian even if he's been fried in butter."Suzy Chase: Oh, wow.Darra Goldstein: And so even though Stefan knew that was just a phrase, it had resonance for people who had experienced very difficult time, he still had some hesitation. He'd never been to Russia. But he agreed to do it, and he was really the one I wanted for another reason, too. He had been in the equivalent of what was the Swedish Navy SEALs. So he's this very hardy, strong, intrepid person, and I feel like he's the only photographer I know who would have gone 200 miles above the Arctic Circle in February to stand on the edge of the Barents Sea for over two hours at midnight in I don't remember what it was, probably -20, -30 plus wind chill factor to catch the Northern Lights, and that photograph appears in the book. So he was a wonderful travel companion.Suzy Chase: I'm interested to hear about the allure of the Arctic for you.Darra Goldstein: I was just there last week. There was a wonderful festival in Kirkenes, Norway, just across the border from Russian that is called the Barents Spektakel. It's a yearly arts festival that celebrates the return of the sun to these far northern places, and I presented my book there. And once again, I was struck by the quality of the light.Darra Goldstein: So there's the sea, and there is snow. In the summer there is the midnight sun. So even though we think of Russia and the far north as a dark place, a perhaps grim place where not a lot of vegetables or other things might grow, it is incredibly beautiful in a very austere kind of crystalline way. The flavors that you get because of the nature of the soil, and then in the summer the short growing season but constant sun, means that the flavors are quite intense. Everything just feels magnified to me there. You feel as though you are on the edge of the world, and that to me is quite thrilling.Suzy Chase: The photos to me look like it's quiet. It looks very silent.Darra Goldstein: Yes. That was another thing I was just reminded of. We went out after midnight to chase the Northern Lights, and I live in a pretty quiet part of the country here in The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, but there's always a little bit of residual noise from a highway that's actually across the border in Vermont, but you get sound. And there, unless you're right by the sea and of course you hear the sound of waves, but if you're away from it, it is absolute stillness. And you feel that there's still wilderness in the world. You can go to places where you don't see human trace.Suzy Chase: My all-time favorite episode of Parts Unknown was when Anthony Bourdain and Zamir Gotta drank lots and lots of vodka. In the book you wrote about Russians' love of vodka, can you talk a little bit about that?Darra Goldstein: It is in the summer very refreshing. You drink it ice cold right out of the freezer, and so it chills and cools. In the winter when you're cold, that initial taste is chilling, but then as it slides down your throat and gets into your body, it warms you up. So it's a very functional drink in that regard. It also is really wonderful with salty things like caviar or different kinds of smoked fish, salted pickles. It is a perfect accompaniment to the appetizers that Russians call Zakuski which are these small bites that you have to whet the appetite before the meal proper.Darra Goldstein: What I like to do is take plain vodka and infuse it with different flavorings. My favorite is probably horseradish. That's another stereotype about Russian food, that it's very bland. They really love horseradish and strong mustard. So it is not a palette cuisine. You add some horseradish to vodka, let it infuse for 24-48 hours, and it has this beautiful kick, or you can make pepper vodka. Another one I like that is quite subtle is you smash some cherry hits and let those infuse. It is a pale, pink vodka that is quite delicate and lovely.Darra Goldstein: You always have to toast when you drink vodka. You're never supposed to just drink it, and you toast to your friends, you toast to peace, you toast to people's accomplishments. You toast to people who are no longer with us. It is a real art to be poetic with the toasts that you give.Suzy Chase: So on the other hand, I don't think of honey when I think of Russia, but early travelers wrote of great pools and lakes of honey in Russia's forest. It became one of Russia's most valuable exports. Over the weekend, I made your recipe for sour cream honey cake on page 260. Now sour cream and honey, those are two flavors I wouldn't ever think about putting together.Darra Goldstein: That, to me, is a wonderfully Russian combination. Because the honey, the Russians do have a sweet tooth, and they always used honey until sugar became more widely available and less expensive in the late 19th century. So that isn't really that long ago. Sour cream mitigates the plain sweetness of honey and gives it that tiny bit of tang that the Russians really like. So you put the two together, and I think it's a pretty brilliant combination. That cake is so ... Did you enjoy it?Suzy Chase: Yeah, it's so light and lovely and so different.Darra Goldstein: The chef who gave me the recipe came from Murmansk to demonstrate this cake for the audience, and it was every bit as good as I remembered it in her hands.Suzy Chase: Now, did she make it square?Darra Goldstein: No, she made it round.Suzy Chase: Okay. Because in the cookbook it says to make it in a square, but I couldn't do a square so I did round.Darra Goldstein: Yeah. You can do it square, round. The reason I did it square was so that I could do these freeform shapes on a baking sheet, but you could make the rounds using a tart ring or a cake pan. The main thing is to have the honey cake layers with the sour cream in between that you allow to soften the honey cake layers, and then the whole thing becomes one delectable whole.Suzy Chase: Yesterday, I made your recipe for classic cabbage soup. Can you describe this recipe?Darra Goldstein: This recipe is really awesome. You know how I said at the beginning of our conversation that my first smell of the Soviet Union was of cabbage and onions, and it wasn't good?Suzy Chase: Yep.Darra Goldstein: I discovered old recipes for what is known as 24 hour soup. So it's not a quickly made cabbage soup where you just sautée some onions and garlic and then perhaps you would have a beef broth, and then you would add the cabbage, and you cook it, and there's your cabbage soup. The classic Russian soup is made with sauerkraut, and again it is that taste for the sour that differentiates the Russian cabbage soup from others, and the brilliant thing about the 24 hour one is that you take the sauerkraut and you bake it in the oven. That caramelizes the sugars that are in the cabbage, and so you get this really ... I'm actually starting to salivate as I think about it. You get this really wonderfully richly flavored sauerkraut that you then freeze.Darra Goldstein: Of course, in old Russian in the winter you just stuck the pot outdoors and it froze. Now I take it and put it in the freezer. And from that previously frozen sauerkraut which also mellows the flavor of it so that it's not so sharp, you make this cabbage soup. It is really beautiful, and it completely upended my ideas about what cabbage soup is. And now I love it.Suzy Chase: It was so multilayered, and you're right. I think the roasting of the sauerkraut mellowed out the sour part.Darra Goldstein: Yeah.Suzy Chase: It's so good.Darra Goldstein: So it has a bit of a sweet edge, but it's not cloying.Suzy Chase: Now for my segment called My Favorite Cookbook, aside from this cookbook what is your all-time favorite cookbook and why?Darra Goldstein: If there's one cookbook that I keep going back to and still discovering new recipes from, it's Richard Sax's classic home desserts, and it's a compendium of a baking and other kinds of desserts with some historical recipes with copious headnotes, but the main thing is that all of his recipes work beautifully, and one of my favorites that I make all the time is chocolate cloud cake. It's a flourless chocolate cake that sort of sinks like a crater in the middle, and then you fill that crater with whipped cream, and it just melts in your mouth.Suzy Chase: Where can we find you on the web and social media?Darra Goldstein: So my website is DarraGoldstein, that's one word, DarraGoldstein.com. Instagram which I love is Darra.Goldstein. Twitter is Darra_Goldstein.Suzy Chase: Wonderful. Well thanks, Darra, for coming on Cookery by the Book podcast.Darra Goldstein: Thanks so much for your interest, Suzy, and enjoy your cabbage soup tonight.OUTRO: Subscribe over on CookerybytheBook.com, and thanks for listening to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book.

During the interwar period (1918-1937), the city began to take its modern shape in Japan. At the same time, development in the Japanese provinces became a capitalist frontier in a new phase of industrial revolution. In Beyond the Metropolis: Second Cities and Modern Life in Interwar Japan (University of California Press, 2013), Louise Young traces these phenomena in an innovative and fluid narrative that is also a pleasure to read.  Young shifts our focus beyond Tokyo, the city that usually looms large in studies of Japanese modernity, and instead explores the worlds and the archives of the provincial city. Focusing on Sapporo, Kanazawa, Okayama, and Niigata, Young’s book is a fascinating study of the city as material network and social imaginary. The narrative celebrates and respects local differences in these very different urban localities, while at the same time tracing the emergence of shared spatial and temporal ways of living in the world. It is a careful, sensitive, and important study, and it changed the way I think about locality and Japan in history. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

An evening with Randy Shaw, author of the new book Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century . In "Beyond the Fields," Shaw reveals the untold story of how the spirit of "Sí Se Puede" that began with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in the 1960s still sets the course for today’s social justice movements. Shaw finds that the influence of Chavez and the UFW has ranged far and wide: in labor campaigns like Justice for Janitors, in the building of Latino political power, in the fight for environmental justice, in the growing national movement for immigrant rights, and even in Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. SEIU Executive Vice-President Eliseo Medina praises Shaw’s book as a "stirring account of how the UFW transformed people’s lives," and LeRoy Chatfield of the Farmworkers Documentation Project says it is a "must read" for former UFW volunteers.
