Extrasode 2 – The Math of Swellness Who doesn't like a review of an album that came out three months ago by two white men that is twice the length of the actual album? This is a longform review of “Path of Wellness”. Somewhere in there we explore the post framework of post album branding, a tangent on Tarantino, and Oliver Sacks theory of Fabi Reyna. A little background: We recorded this podcast in July. This was during that magic period in which both the computer and the microphone were dying (spoilers). The audio is a bit rough sounding, even after I cleaned it up. Most notably, I had to cut most of a section where we talk about Sleater-Kinney's Post “The Woods” career. I bring this up because it comes off as a lot more dismissive of those efforts. I don't want to snooze on this, because both Carrie and Corin produced some amazing music in those years (The Spells, Wild Flag, and the Corin Tucker Band). Two more interesting notes: 1. I seem to be a bit down on this album. I'm not. I love this album and still have it in heavy rotation. My favorite song (which I neglect to mention) is “Favorite Neighbor” 2. First Draft Episode #227: Courtenay Hameister Courtenay Hameister, debut author of memoir Okay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went From Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things, and former host, co-producer and head writer of Live Wire Radio. I have always dreamt of being able to link to an article about Jeff Bezos’s dick pics (just kidding but here we go): this incident was wild - The National Enquirer allegedly tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos, threatening to release intimate pictures of him unless he paid up. Instead, Bezos released the pics himself and told them to screw off. It was wild. It was great. That incident calls to mind So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This,” the Modern Love essay by Mandy Len Catron, references Dr. Arthur Aron’s study, which included 36 questions to generate intimacy. Sleater-Kinney singer-guitarist and Portlandia co-star Carrie Brownstein has published a critically acclaimed memoir, the candid, moving and eloquent Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. And to kick off her book tour, she sat down and had a great conversation with another acclaimed musician-author, the Roots' Questlove, on October 27th, 2015 at St. Vitus, the beloved metal bar in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. The event was produced by the very cool WORD bookstore mini-chain, with stores in Greenpoint and Jersey City. WORD gave the Talkhouse permission to record and air the conversation — thanks, WORD!
