School may be out in your neighborhood, but it's back in session in Avonlea with Anne at the front of the classroom. Anne continues on her path to becoming “dazzlingly clever” by embarking on her career as a teacher, and today's discussion ranges from our own career aspirations to Avonlea school stories to the ambitious heroines of Little Women. Inspired by: Ragon is inspired by: the movie Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret Kelly is inspired by celebrity memoirs written by women including: We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union, You Got Anything Stronger? By Gabrielle Union, Just Kids by Patti Smith, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein, Open Book by Jessica Simpson, and Paris: The Memoir by Paris Hilton.
*This episode originally ran in 2017. When actor Gabrielle Union talked with Anna in front of a live audience back in 2017, she was about to turn 45 and had just released her first book of essays, We're Going to Need More Wine. Since then, she's turned 50, and she's written a second book, You Got Anything Stronger?, in addition to starring in the third season of “Truth Be Told” on Apple TV, and in a critically-acclaimed supporting role in the A24 movie, The Inspection. In their conversation, Gabrielle Union talks openly about her relationship with herself and her body, and how she's worked on healing both after the traumas of her sexual assault as a 19-year-old and her fertility struggles within her marriage to Dwayne Wade. “I've never felt more whole and healed and connected and present and beautiful and powerful,” Gabrielle Union says.

Happy Wine Wednesday! We are leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe and heading to Palmetto, Florida for another installment of our special pilot project series. Special guest Candi joins us to discuss the pilot episode of TNT's Claws. Our discussion kicks off with the Candi/Jocelyn origin story, which began thanks to Twitter and the ill-fated Universal Fan Con. We then get into the main discussion and share how we became acquainted with the TNT dark comedy, Claws. We share the sh*t we liked about the pilot and call out a few questionable writing decisions that we did not like in an otherwise solid episode. As always, we get into the Qs that need some As, which includes an examination of some very questionable decisions by Roller. We discuss nail shop rituals, whether Virginia can be trusted, and the fun fashions worn by the ladies.Claws is a cast of heavy hitters, so of course we shared our thoughts on the performances that grabbed our attention in the pilot. And no episode of I'ma Need More Wine would be complete without getting a little thirsty. We had lots of thoughts on who from the cast we would like to dig our claws into during some sexy time.As always, we love you for listening. Happy Wine Wednesday! We are back with special guest Abbey M. White with the conclusion of our discussion on Marvel's Eternals. The episode picks up with the remainder of our thoughts on our favorite small group pairings in the film. Next, we talk about the impressively diverse cast and whether Eternals manages to be equitable and inclusive, rather than just having diversity for the sake of diversity. With a slate of fun and exciting super powers on display in Eternals, we could not resist talking about which power we would like to have and why. Of course we would be remiss if we did not discuss the criticism of Eternals. In particular, we explore the film's use of non-linear storytelling and whether or not it was effective. The MCU is known for its action sequences and there are some really notable fights in Eternals. We talk about how Eternals manages to fit within the Marvel algorithm while still being unique in some aspects when it came to featuring battles and conflicts. You know what was outside the Marvel algorithm? Our heroes having sex! You know we had to discuss that.We dabble a bit into the mid and post credit scenes and share our thoughts on whether or not we are really done with Ikaris. We then share our MVPs and discuss whether or not the use of big Hollywood names was a blessing or a curse with respect to audience and critic expectations. Of course no episode of I'ma Need More Wine would be complete without things getting a little thirsty. The discussion concludes with us discussing which actors from the film make our heart skip a beat so much that we're hoping the Eternals can buy us more time with them by stopping the Emergence. Well, if there is one word that sums up this particular interview on the Old Man & the Three, it's “real”. As in, keeping it real. And the person behind that word is the one and only Gabrielle Union - the superstar actress, best-selling author, and wife and partner of Dwyane Wade. In this raw, brutally honest and often times hilarious conversation, she lays it on the line and doles out some truths on several topics, including what it's like being a black actress in Hollywood, how her acting career got started, why she decided to write her books, how emptying her “fucks” basket changed her life, and much more. Plus, she talks about her new book “Got Anything Stronger?”, which is a follow up to her best-selling initial release “We're Going to Need More Wine”. It's a spectacular discussion that you do not want to miss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

More Wine Pod listeners, assemble! Grab your wine and join us this week as we revisit Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's no question that the film is a pivotal part of the MCU, particularly in light of Infinity War, Endgame, and WandaVision, so we thought it was time to rewatch the film with the benefit of hindsight, which as some say, is 20/20 "vision." Sorry - we couldn't resist. We kick off the discussion by sharing when we first saw Age of Ultron and our initial impressions of the film. We loved seeing the Avengers working together like a well oiled machine and getting a boost from Nick Fury when they needed it. We praised Tony Stark's mastery of sarcasm and James Spader's casting as the snarky voice of Ultron. We also managed to work in some interesting revelations about crying in the movies and the consequences of telling Kristine that she's just like her mom. As for the sh*t we didn't like, we are very relieved that Nat and Bruce never ended up together. Next, we talk about how Infinity War and Endgame influenced our hindsight views of Age of Ultron. The film is an important bridge in the MCU, particularly with respect to Civil War and Infinity War/Endgame. Likewise, Age of Ultron is important to understanding Wanda Maximoff's character journey, so we discuss our hindsight impressions of Age of Ultron in the context of the events that took place in WandaVision. We also begrudgingly acknowledge how important Clint Barton is to multiple character arcs that ultimately play out in Endgame and WandaVision and work in a little bit of Barton bashing just to balance things out. We close out the discussion by sharing our favorite Easter eggs from Age of Ultron and explore what we would change now that we have the benefit of hindsight. It wouldn't be an episode of I'ma Need More Wine without a discussion about the Avengers who quenched our thirst. Find out who we want to join us in the pool AKA Thor's Water of Sights. Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book We're Gonna Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo'd Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don't, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You'll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what's new with the book or the author currently. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *Gabrielle Union's rise to fame, facing sexism, racism and her views on "the mountain of assimilation" *The nature of Hollywood show business and the toll it takes on actors like Union *The connection between Gabrielle Union and major societal movements like #MeToo, Black Lives Matter and becoming a Time Magazine most influential person of 2020 What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? In light of the unjust loss of Black lives in America and of the Black Lives Matter movement, we wanted to share an episode from 2018 where, for our book club, we discussed one of our most favorite YA literature books for the classroom, Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give. In the episode, we discuss the novel and share pairings including Gabrielle Union's We're Going to Need More Wine, Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil's The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After, and Nic Stone's Dear Martin. Note: We read a few passages from the text of the novel that include strong language. Spoilers are inevitable throughout our discussion, so consider whether or not to listen if you haven't yet read the book! As the youngest of five older siblings, Jasmine Sweet has had quite a bit of experience coming into her own over the years. As a highly esteemed marketing executive, influencer, wife, model, and MBA holder (amongst a myriad of other acclaimed titles), this Nashville local has showed up as a pillar of inspiration, leadership, and community time and time again. Today, she's come to my place to spill the "sweet tea" on everything from her most embarrassing moment (which wasn't so embarrassing after all) to how she prefers to network herself to her experience being a woman of color in the Southern influencer space. We are delighted to welcome our very first podcast guest - Maddie Kay Ray! Maddie is a cosplayer, podcaster, and nerd loremaster. She flexes her loremaster skills this week as we talk all things Mandalorian. INTRO - 10:41We kick off with shit we like - Jocelyn loves the Epix series Godfather of Harlem and thinks you will too! We did not like the news of Marvel adding a trans character to the MCU being walked back/clarified to learn that there will be no progress on that front forthcoming. Cast Angelica Ross as Storm you cowards!10:42-18:42We then get into our overall thoughts about The Mandalorian AKA The Baby Yoda show. It is a perfect gateway for those new to the Star Wars universe. We marvel at how Jon Favreau took a deep cut and made it a hit. 18:43-51:04Next, Maddie puts on a master class in lore as she explains where The Mandalorian falls in the timeline in the Star Wars universe and does a deep dive into the Mandalore. We also totally geek out over the Darksaber. 51:05-ENDWe close the discussion by sharing our thoughts on our favorite episodes, characters, scenes, and character arcs. We also share our wish list for season 2. No episode of I’ma Need More Wine would be complete without throwing a little shade and getting a little thirsty. We question people who don’t love Baby Yoda. Seriously, who hurt you? We thirst over one of the baddest bitches in the galaxy, Cara Dune, and celebrate the legendary acting of Giancarlo Esposito. We loved The Mandalorian and had a blast talking about it with Maddie. Give her a follow on Twitter and IG!PS - Jocelyn sincerely apologizes to Hellboy fans for referring to him as Hellraiser when discussing Kuill. She does not, however, apologize for referring to Greef Karga as Apollo Creed.Links to ish we mentioned:Check out the article written by the brilliant Da7e Gonzales (mentioned by Maddie) here.Theory on who picks up Fennec Shand at the end of Chapter 5 by Dan Casey at Nerdist.Post Kristine referenced on not sharing Pedro’s face in the Mandalorian Subreddit.Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @MoreWinePod!Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/morewinepod)
For as long as I can remember, I have loved words. As a kid, in all my report cards the consistent note from my teachers was ‘Gloria’s a good student, but she loves to talk ... she talks too much!’ My sisters always say I have the gift of gab! In high school my favourite subject was English and one teacher in particular, Mr. Tryba, made me love words even more because watching him speak was a delight. He articulated every word. When he spoke, it was like music. So fluid and full of passion. It’s no surprise that I also love reading. So far this year I have read twenty-one books and counting. Most of my Amazon.com purchases are books. My kindle is filled with history, mystery and fantasy, with a bit of self-help thrown in for mental health! Last year I started reading autobiographies and that’s a whole other level of awesome. With autobiographies, I like to pair the audio book with the e-book because it’s usually the author reading the audio book. That was the case with Becoming, by Michelle Obama and We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. I also read biographies by Taraji P. Henson, Tina Turner and one of my favourites that had me both laughing out loud and crying was by Tiffany Haddish. These are all people I admire and hearing their stories in their own voices felt like having a conversation with these people right in my living room. By the end of their stories, I felt like I knew them in a completely different way. My favourite type of story is the psychological thriller. I love a good whodunit, and Dean Koontz is the master of this genre, in my opinion! I’m in the middle of one now called Holy Island by L. J. Ross set on Lindisfarne in the UK, but yesterday I was in need of some inspiration and turned to Oprah! I finished the audio book version of her book The Path Made Clear, Discovering Your Life’s Direction and Purpose, and in it, Oprah along with experts from the worlds of music, movies, literature plus several spiritual leaders talked about knowing what their life’s purpose was even when they were young kids. They were naturally drawn to it. Most of the experts in the book simply followed the path of doing what they loved and the successes (and failures) were just a natural part of the journey. Reading this book made me want to know what’s behind my life’s pursuits. Why am I a singer and songwriter? Why am I releasing my own music? Why am I blogging and podcasting? Why do I present a weekly radio show? I went to bed last night with these questions on my mind, and this morning I had the answer. I want to be heard. So when I was running my mouth in class as a kid, I just wanted to be heard. It seems that my purpose is to communicate be it spoken or sung, and this purpose is fueled by my desire to be heard. I am living my purpose. I believe that life naturally moves in a forward direction, and a clear sense of purpose will guide us on our individual journeys. So keep moving forward, follow your heart and know your purpose. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gloria-miller-music/message

A review of "We're Going to Need More Wine" by Gabrielle Union a good read that balances serious topics with funny moments. Show notes are available at http://noirehistoir.com/blog/were-going-to-need-more-wine.
Henry David Thoreau made an insightful point when he wrote, “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.” Whether you’re in a season of challenges, conflict, joy, or change, each season holds its unique ups and downs. But if we dismiss the hard seasons, there’s a lot of growth and beauty that we could miss. On this episode, the lovely Anne Stevenson is back to talk about navigating those seasons of life, including her experience moving to the United States from Kenya, and what it was like to transition into motherhood. You’re going to hear Anne’s insights on relationships, productivity, finding a balance with social media, and fine-tuning your focus so that you can put your energy into the things that really matter. Anne is also answering your questions on finding a workout that you love, how to maintain your family’s healthy lifestyle around the holidays, as well as how we balance working in our business while we work on our relationship. Anne’s story highlights how to step into your power and focus on what truly matters, I hope it will inspire you to embrace the season of life that you’re in. In this episode you’ll discover: Anne’s experience immigrating to the United States. How experiences from childhood can influence you into adulthood. The cultural differences between Kenya and the US. Why it’s important to get to the root of your emotions. What it means to make a study of your relationship. Why Anne decided to take a social media detox, and what she learned from it. The truth about willpower and changing habits. How Anne created a built-in accountability system during her social media detox. Tips for undergoing a successful and insightful social media detox. How to add value on social media. What it’s really like to be married to a creative. How to navigate eating healthy during the holidays. What it means to understand the seasons of your life. How assessing your goals quarterly can make you more productive. Why you should consider hiring a housekeeping service. The importance of being patient and kind to yourself. Amanda and Jenn discuss novels about the Balkans, contemporary YA, really weird books, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Legendary by Stephanie Garber, and Megabat by Anna Humphrey, illustrated by Kass Reich. Questions 1. Hello Ladies! My friend and I are going on a trip to the Balkans (Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Belgravia, Macedonia and Albania). We love historical fiction or narrative non-fiction and would love to read more about these countries before visiting. Thanks! -Britany 2. Looking for an interesting essay collection for the Read Harder Challenge! -Rachael 3. Hello from Canada! I love your show :) I'm looking for book recommendations for my sister. She's in her late 20s, and has described herself as "enjoys reading, not books shopping, but only likes weird stuff". She seems to like John Wyndham books...Books that are weird, creepy, not very sci fi, and not very magical- something more in between. I suggested the Library at Mount Char (one of the weirdest I own), but she was turned off due to the title and perhaps my poor pitch. She will pick up Dark Matter, and the Southern Reach Trilogy due to my persistence. but I'm not sure they are right for her. Please help! -Dominique 4. Hi ladies! I just finished Retta’s So Close To Being The Sh*t Y’all Don’t Even Know and loved it. I was hoping you could recommend something similar. I loved the behind the scenes stories and comedic tone. I’ve also read and enjoyed books by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling and Anna Kendrick. -Whitney 5. Hello ladies!! Love your podcast and look forward to listening to it every week at work!! I love your passion for books and helping people find new books!! Anyways, I am in the process of pursuing my dream and writing my first novel, however I would love your thoughts on books for creativity and writing. I've read Big Magic, and Stephen King's novel on writing, so anything that could help with encouragement and motivation would be lovely! Open to nonfiction and fiction! Thank you so much!! -Kaitlin 6. Hello, I love to listening to YA novels and could use some new recommendations. I have recently listened to and enjoyed When Dimple Met Rishi, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, And What I Saw and How I Lied. I also really enjoy Rainbow Rowell. Eleanor & Park is the only one I have left to read and it is currently on my to be listened to list, as well as Dumplin'. Thanks! -Megan 7. Thanks to Read Harder, I've read 2 books this year - Pachinko and Do Not Say We Have Nothing - which really made me realize that I know very little about 20th century East Asian history. I'm looking for nonfiction to give me some more grounding in the topic. It doesn't have to specifically be about the Japanese colonization of Korea or the Cultural Revolution, I'd be happy with anything compelling and readable about 19th or 20th century China, Japan, Korea, or even southeast Asia. Thanks! -Laura Books Discussed Girl At War by Sara Novic The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht The Fire This Time edited by Jesmyn Ward How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee (tw: child abuse) The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley The Book of M by Peng Shepherd This is Just My Face by Gabourey Sidibe We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union (tw: rape) Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel by Jane Smiley (rec’d by Attica Locke on Recommended) Valley Girls by Sarah Nicole Lemon Anger is a Gift, narrated and written by Mark Oshiro Wild Swans by Jung Chang The Court Dancer by Kyung-Sook Shin

Here is a little disclosure about me, I don’t generally like autobiographies. I find that they can be terribly dull and full of pomp. I know I read The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish, but if you’ll remember, I also said that the writing left much to be desired. But Gabrielle Union's book We're Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and Are True was a delight to read! It was finished before I was. Within this book, there were so many nuggets can could be the area of focus. We could talk about how we pretend to be something/someone we are not so that we can fit into various groups. We could also talk about what can happen to a relationship when our significant others' family doesn't like us. We can talk about the impacts of sexual assault, being with the wrong person, or finding the right person. But what I want to talk about is the process by which Gabrielle Union, not only created a wholly new unit with her husband, Dwayne Wade, but also what her experience in Blackness confirms and re-teaches us.
